Why Resin 3D Prints Fail - Improve Your Prints - Tips on Understanding Overhangs and Supports

  • An animated explanation to “Why did this happen?” When you move up to larger resin 3d prints, you also start seeing failures. There’s no blanket answer for all print failures. But in this video I explore a few reasons why resin 3d prints sometimes fail. And hopefully show you how you can get better results.
This video includes over 10 minutes of animated segments and those took forever to finish.
    Hope you enjoy it!

My problem is this: I have adhesion in my supports because I pause my prints to check the progress. When the plate raises up, the supports are stuck to the bed but my model is stuck to the fep. I don't know what's up. I haven't had a successful print yet. Everything in my print profiles are lined up accurately. I'm using the Elegoo Mars Pro. I only had my printer 5 days and I only printed four items. ALL FOUR ITEMS WERE STUCK TO THE FEP. What is wrong? My resin is new just like my printer. Everything is stuck to the vat and I'm losing patience. Please help!

I've been printing with FDM for some time now so I'm very familiar with supports and overhangs. However, having just bought my first SLA printer my first prints were less than stellar. Whilst it's obvious the print orientation is reversed, I hadn't quite wrapped my head around proper support placement and print orientation (I guess FDM muscle memory just didn't want to let go). Thank you for explaining very clearly what my brain should have been telling me but didn't. This has helped me massively and you have gained a sub. Many thanks - that's the best explanation I've seen so far. As a long-time FDM printer geek - it's taking some mental adjustment - and this definitely helped. What isn't mentally obvious is that unlike an FDM print - where the plastic is pretty stiff within seconds of being laid down - that isn't the case with resin unless you keep the light turned on for longer. What's most infuriating - is that with FDM, you can see that something's going wrong immediately - but until your resin print is more than an inch or two tall, you have no idea.

Great video for beginners, and I am one of them but, have to say, I've understood problems with my prints and came up to similar conclusions. Having accurate small cnc machine found out that resin printing is not so great for 3d models that have complex flat geometrical shapes. You either have to add lots of supports, make model with smart integral supports (as cube model), or break the model into smaller pieces and maybe design with few artificial flat layers that you later remove by sanding. Very hard to get a perfect model with resin. Printing minis and toys may not be as bad as we don’t see much of flat surfaces that usually don’t print well.

    • @Nerdtronic
      @Nerdtronic  Před 3 lety +1

I have a project (that will eventually be another video) where I made a self supporting structure - basically like a lego tree. Those pieces snap off and are pretty clean. Flat surfaces on the sides etc. No overhang problems. I'll try to get that video out within a few months.

Honestly, this might be one of the best videos i've ever seen on youtube.
Sure, it's not flashy and the topic is niche, but goddamn this video delivers EXACTLY what it promises and nothing less and that is rare these days. Fantastic animations that are advanced enough to be pleasing to the eye but still simple enough to be able to easily follow the theory behind it, without being distracted by clutter etc.
Well researched, well delivered information that leaves me perfectly armed with all the knowledge i need to adjust the things myself instead of blindly following instructions of some youtube tutorial without understanding why.
I know it might seem odd to be so overly excited by a video like this, but this is the content that is making youtube such a valuable place rather than all the flashy/clickbait-y stuff on the front page. Take my like, take my upvote, even though you deserve more for your efforts than that.

I got a SLA printer a few days ago. I made a few good prints and a few bad prints. I couldn't understand why some prints went wrong. This video perfectly explained my mistakes. Many thanks for posting it!

    Just bought a Mars Elegoo.
Watching a bunch of resin print videos.
Your presentation is the best I've seen to demonstrate failure points.
    Thanks.
    Good cartooning as well!
    And I subscribed...

One of the best learning videos if seen on youtube. The animations are on point. A great inspiration for my work. Good job and thank you.

I just got a resin printer and have yet to make my first print. Gotta say after all the FB pages and videos I've watched I have been worried about it all. Bit this video helps so much that I'm sure I can figure this out. I'm not planning on making anything too crazy. Thanks for the very detailed videos!

This is a fantastic video, and those animations are fantastic. I'm definitely saving this one to send to people. Thanks for pointing out why the blanket 45 degrees advice is problematic.

Also different angles can create different artifacts based on the XY resolution vs the layer height. If these matched then 45 would be the best angle. But they rarely do.

Just bought a DLP printer after coming from FDM, this video is an excellent no nonsense great explanation of the differences and some unexpected issues that can occur, I've not got a successful print yet as my initial testing ruined my first FEP and I might have tried to print too complicated a set of pieces (Sauron from Lord of the rings, several pieces all at once) This video has got me to rethink when I'm looking at the model during slicing and adding supports.

This video was a HUGE help, thanks so much. I've been having a love/hate relationship with my Anycubic Photon printer and my supports were pretty good - But you explained all the OTHER reasons my prints were failing.
