If you want to master a habit, the key is to start with repetition, not perfection. You don’t need to map out every feature of a new habit. You just need to practice it. This is the first takeaway of the 3rd Law: from Atomic Habits

Love that book! One of my habits is--trying to actually finish what I start. Started Atomic Habits about a year ago, and although I LOVE it, I haven't gotten through it yet. Still trying though! I keep it on my nightstand by my bed. 🤣 Borrowed it from a friend --I started reading when I was housesitting for them and they don't have wi-fi. Or cell reception. Gonna house sit for a week this Saturday so I just might finally finish it! And leave it there. One year later. My smartphone distracts me too much at home.

    • @davestagner
      @davestagner Před 2 lety +3

Atomic Habits would tell you to read a chapter (they’re short!) every day, until the book is done. You don’t need to read the book; you just need to read a chapter. Every day. (And when you’re done with it, start another book!) To deal with your smartphone’s distraction, try something like removing the apps that distract you. I cut way back on social media by removing FB/Twitter from my phone. Or better yet, put your phone somewhere not within immediate reach! If you have to stand up to get it every time you want your phone, you’ll use it less (“Make it difficult”).

Always start putting the Focus on your Health FIRST... it's the #1 thing we have TOTAL control over... AND it totally helps all other areas fall into place🤩 when we feel better and think better... we are STRONGER to make necessary changes and better able to handle the stress of things we can not.

But the difficulty is not the motivation
    The strength is the discipline
You don't need a exact moment to start.
    You just need to start.

Amazing video! Probably the most life changing book I have read so far. Also, an important part of building habits according to me is to do 1 at a time. In the beginning I tried to make the perfect day from day 1 but you can't change your life in 1 day. Start with habits 1 at a time!

    • @tallyp.7643

this sounds like a book I need (of course, I tell myself that with EVERY book I buy, but yeah, that's something else to work on). I am an over-planner and careful to-do list writer who can't seem to get to actually doing what's on the list. And combine that with an "all or nothing' way of thinking and cue shooting yourself in the foot repeatedly. I'm taking the weekend to clean as much as I can and make a clean slate (or at least FAR cleaner one) to actually be able to create better habits. It's "the doing" that stops me. And every time I get geared up and ready, I get sick, or someone has a problem, and all my plans go by the wayside. Self-sabotage sucks, and expecting perfection too soon is a recipe for disappointment.
Yeah, definitely gonna get this one now. It'll be one of the first I read for the new year.

I take meds for PTSD. If there is junk I'll get up and binge on it in the night and not even remember it! If there isn't junk around I sleep! It's such a weird thing that my subconscious clearly knows there is junk around! When I cut out juice and soda years ago I decided that I was going to drink at least half my water each day before I could have this sweet treat, I naturally quit wanting juice and soda and easily drink 8 chips of water daily without even thinking about it now. I have a cup of water before my feet even hit the floor in the morning. It's great to naturally just not want the extra calories in juice and soda. I lost 70lbs by not buying the food that I'll binge on in the night and by making water a priority!

Food/exercise/health care up several times. I would love to go plant based. Right now I am my 87 y/o father's caretaker. He eats like a five year old. It puts me in situations that I know I should not do. It also shames me to shop for him. If it was not for him, I would never visit a food vendor that involves a window and a speaker. I have not been able to figure out a system to get both of us fed doing completely different food plans. The gym taunts me every time I drive past it on my way to my dad's house.

I recently read Atomic Habits and I think it’s great! I’m glad you made this vid to help motivate me to implement new systems. My greatest issue is with tracking though. How do you track them? Notebooks, apps? Could you please elaborate what you use and how you use them, thankuuuu! 😊

i've read the book too and i'm almost done reading it (reading it for like 2 months because i read chapter by chapter then stop and summarise then i try to implement it in my own life)
i basically just put a habit tracker paper on my wall so i can see it everytime and get motivated by ticking it by completing the habit. if i see a day unmarked (because life gets in the way), i must complete the habit the next day because if not the habit your building will get derailed

James Clear has a habit tracker book, or you can print out and keep it in sight.

I use an app called Loop Habit Tracker which is very simple and no-frills. It also seems to have no commercial side to it - no ads. It does the job perfectly for me.
