    What are some differences between essentialism and minimalism?

    • @sweetchilli1077
      @sweetchilli1077 Před rokem +41

      Essentialism is your core, not goals but what you yearn for. Minimalism is a tool to get there period.

    • @KayBread98

      Minimalism is about having less materialistic things and essentialism is about doing less and focusing on fewer, but more beneficial activities. Quality over quantity in both cases.

      @RinAkurei Před rokem +11

      Minimalism is a short-term decision making process - the here-and-now.
      What habits to break or replace. What shirt to keep or donate. Which entertainment show to unsubscribe from. Etc.
      Essentialism is a long-term decision-making process - the long-term perspective.
      How to prioritize my time, categorize my life, and make decisions based on changing myself internally for the better.

      As someone with a degree in Philosophy and who also has a minor in Gender Studies, I really feel as though now appropriating the word "Essentialism" and turning it into a lifestyle / design neologism is really going to make talking about ideas super cluttered and confusing -- which is not a very Minimalist thing to do.

    Essential/Essentialism as a word itself is a term I can better relate to than "minimalism" (I'm in neither movement nor camp).
    It is more realistic, pragmatic, practical, intentional and purposeful, and that also doesn't evoke a bare to the bones room, with just 3 items in it.

    My microwave broke after only 3 years. I decided after not having it for a month that I really didn't miss it. Made space on my counter too. 😍

    • @bria2596
      @bria2596 Před rokem +14

      Hi. If your microwave has gone "black" - no lights show, etc. This is a $1 fix! Open the back, and you will find a small fuse that has blown. That stops all electricity from flowing. The fuse is usually held in two metal brackets and pops out easily. Take the old fuse to a hardware store and get a new fuse. (I always have bought a "stronger" fuse). Pop the new fuse back in the brackets, and you will be back in business. * If, on the other hands, you have lights but NO heating capability - that is a dead microwave, and it is cheaper to buy a new one than to try to fix those parts, usually it will be the magnatron, or another part I fail to remember the name of. The new parts will cost more than a new microwave. Strange how that is, isn't it!

      I would like to get rid of my microwave went it dies out. It seems like a pain though to re-heat soup on the stove (another pot to clean), make oatmeal or other food that would be quick in the micro. If you have ideas to share I’d love to hear them.

      @@bria2596 BE VERY CAREFUL about opening up electronics! If you don't know really well what you are doing, don't do it. Capacitators in electronic devices do have the potential to kill or seriously harm you.
      This includes those in "harmless", everyday devices like for example microwaves or camera flashes.

    I read an article years back about a team of nurses in a hospice who asked those in their care what they regretted....the number one answer was not spending enough time with their loved ones. "Become unavailable" ❤ cripes! I was 50 before I realised how much I run around & take on responsibility for other people's dreams - or whims🙄 I enabled their entitled narcicisstic behaviour. Holy doodle! The outrage & pushback when I withdraw & deign to care about my own dreams & whims! 🫣 I guess somewhere deep inside I always knew that was the threat keeping me pleasing them. But now I only have half my life left, so I don't have time for that bullshit☺️ Thank you Gabe, for persisting in your CZcams dream🌸

    I loved this video👍... but at the same time I kept thinking "I hope you go back and revisit it when your daughter is older and in school and has extracurricular activities.. because then you will see that unfortunately you are "FORCED" to do things you PERSONALLY do NOT want to do ie. "waste your time on", but you "do it for your daughter/child" to help and support them and their interests and goals, so that they (hopefully) grow up into "nice, happy and useful members of the human race, and can survive on their own two feet someday."
    Of course we could argue that we chose to have kids and we chose to be good parents...which we did.. but it still means compromising your own wishes, needs and our most valuable commodity "time" to accommodate our childrens needs.

    I appreciate Gabe's positive outlook on living an authentic and rewarding life. But I must add my 2 cents. As a 70 year old, single gay man, I have experienced a great many 'ups' and 'downs' during 5 decades of adulthood. Many 'downs' were due to poor choices on my part and some I had no control over (such as my partner dying). Most of the 'ups' were because of hard work and some were just luck. I've had lousy jobs and have been taken advantage of. I tried to invest and lost all my money. I've been in abusive relationships. I don't maintain close family ties (by choice). And my few attempts at self-employment all flatlined. Yet, each time, I found a way to bounce back and re-invent myself. I guess what I've learned from all of that is: Work on your strengths, take care of your personal self and don't trust anyone too readily. Life is mainly about "self-preservation".

    • @boopdoop2251
      @boopdoop2251 Před 10 měsíci +3

      While you have some good points, I have to disagree with your last sentence. Self preservation ultimately fails in the end for everyone. Living life for anything but God means you’re living for something temporary. Your relationship with God is eternal.
      Anyway, I am sorry for the pain you’ve been through and hope you have a great week.

    I love this book. I got it based on a previous recommendation by you. Two things that stood out for me: 1-Just because something might be a good opportunity or item, doesn't mean it's the best for me right now. And 2-the difference between important and essential. I've always had trouble setting priorities sss! because everything seemed important. But when the word is essential, that draws a much bigger line in the sand and helps me filter for the thing that is a priority for me, now, in that realm of my life. (I have realms in life such as financial/family/artistic, etc.) Great video about a great book, thanks!

I know rental property, storage units, vending machines etc are great passive income streams, but I would really like your take on how to get started and how much money would be a realistic amount to start any of the ideas I mentioned or any you may have.

    Many times, when I participate in certain activities, I question whether or not it's worth my time. The friends I see, how influential are they? And lately, I just ask myself, is this the best use of my time? This is not living my best life. I just recently lost my job. I earned a great salary. I am now faced with possible $15 to $20k drop with a new job when I felt I needed $10 or $20k more before. I had just started taking strong action to improve my finances and planned to leave corporate life after 2 more years. Well, I am scrambling a bit but do have emergency funds and large food and essential supplies...prepared for emergency. Well, here I am. All of your tips still apply, and I'm working all angles. Ah yes, I want “expidentially” bigger results 😂 I think you meant exponentially. Love the video. Keep it up!

      Not necessarily. I will have to find it in context, since you didn’t mention the time mark, but he may pronounced: Expedientially is an adverb that means done in a way that is best under the circumstances. It can also mean based on self-interest or what is advantageous, as opposed to what is right. Expedientially is rarely used….okay it’s at 10:21…probably exponentially, but it’s cool to think how either would change the meaning a bit…

    For zero-based budgeting, I was using YNAB, but they keep cranking their price after they switched to a subscription model. I found a free google sheets template on steroids called Aspire Budgeting. It’s zero-based.

    I've watched a bunch of your videos, and successfully implemented some of the lessons from them into my daily life. Up until now I wasn't a subscriber however, this video was the deciding factor I don't know what sets this video apart from the others but this was the video for me. Thank you for providing value based content!

    Didn't know till watching this video that there was a name for how I live my life: Essentialism.
    EVERYTHING you said struck a cord!
    Every moment affects my future self.
    I often do a tiny bit here, a tiny bit there, to make things easier for future-me. And when I decide to not do something, it's because I know future-me can handle it, but present-me needs a break.
    Every single thing in my life is prioritized, categorized, and pre-planned. And a major part of my time is spent on RELAXING. Guilt-free; because I've learned how important it is to be happy, healthy, and developing positively.
