    ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

If you are on the fence about an item of clothing, wear it. Just wear it while you do errands or even just around the house (obviously doesn't apply to cocktail dresses and fancy clothes). Pretty soon you will know if you hate it, it doesn't fit, etc. This has helped me a lot.

I am Autistic and ADHD and have pretty bad executive dysfunction. Something that helps me is thinking about very small steps. Sometimes it's as basic as: put feet on the ground, stand up, walk to kitchen, drink water... and then thinking about and doing those really basic things can help with even the worst of inertia to do something like put away dishes, clean dishes... and sometimes that will lead into decluttering or a rearrangement of my living room.
Also another thing that has helped me is to try and think in percentages. I can't always give everything to every day. But it's an accomplishment even if its 1%, 5%, 20% and I end up having to stop.
I like the small chunk methods because it's a lot more doable. The big decluttering cleaning projects just don't happen for me often and I can't force or coax myself into that kind of state because it's a high energy state I don't normally operate at.

@@indiabilly I did that for years with washing dishes! I'd set up the laptop or my phone by the sink and it was such a help.
Now I've come to the point where I mind washing dishes so little that I think, "oh, I'll just do it quickly, it's not that much" and don't even need the distraction. I never expected that development, but I'm grateful! (Also I think that the regular dishwashing made possible by the Netflix playing during, turned into smaller dish piles and now it's very uncommon to go two days without washing. Often I'll do it more than once a day, just because I've become attached to having a clear counter and it doesn't seem like a daunting task.)

This is so helpful and relevant to other areas of my life too. I wanted to drop a tip that has helped me, a procrastinahoarder. Sometimes I do a “Quick 5” where I just sort out or throw away or put away 5 items. It seems really small but if you do it a couple times a week, it does make a dent. I’ve been able to do it during a commercial break.

Then I pour a glass of wine, savor the effort and moment....then, of course, clean that glass IMMEDIATELY (two minute rule) and know I CAN DO IT!

  • @carlh-thehermitwithwi-fi679

Good video! As a pro organizer (on top of other things) and a David Allen Devotee, somewhere between "getting things done" and your "laws of decluttering"...is the solution.
I do a "zone defense" - Do the simple stuff FIRST - becasue it is a routine or a habit, THEN hit the big stuff.
Time zone is good. Timers work, for many. I use a simple THREE ITEM TO DO LIST. And it WORKS for me.
When someone asks me for my time (which is money in my pocket) my first meeting with them is in a chair, and i look around their space. I then ask them about how they were rasied, what they are doing, how did it get this way, what is their end goal, that sort of thing. I call this an INTAKE FORM.
My NEXT meeting (which is money in my pocket) is another sit in a chair with an adult beverage and examine the HOW then the WHY. The gentle explanation of how it has to be a new set of habits for them might put them off; its a habit, and we know it. Spending is a habit. Cleaning is a habit.
    WE then talk about ROUTINES.
I must admit, i love MArie Kondo method, she gives you no time to think or breathe, so you are immersed "inthe moment".
I also let these people know about MY failures in decluttering, adn share my failures so they know that i'm not a guru, just a person like them.
My current goal is to be the "Fung Suei/Organziation guy" for RV's, small spaces, trailers, etc.
    Now jsut to market it!

If you’re getting other things done that need doing, you’re still making progress, not wasting time. Don’t feel you HAVE TO do the big/difficult job first. Doing so is one possible strategy, not the only one that works.
In regard to those items I really dread doing but would love to be done with, I don’t care to think about eating any frogs. Not first, not “later”, not ever (Yes, I am familiar with the quote and its use by declutterers). I AM, however, willing to slay a dragon. It’s a simple change in outlook, but it really works for me. If you can’t stomach eating a frog, maybe slay a dragon. Or substitute any other metaphor that empowers you to “git ‘er done.”

So many "snow days" here in Canada where I had the kids at home when I thought they'd be at school and I could tackle a big project. 😂 My daughter has become helpful with the decluttering so that helps. My ADHD means I've been terrible with procrastination in the past but timers definitely help. Love this smart video Marissa ☺️

Very interesting about all the laws! But personally I can't imagine trying to declutter when my kitchen is a mess, or my bed isn't me or a basic things aren't done like laundry. Because if I let those things go and I declutter for a day then I have a mountain of work left after dinner and that will spill over into the next day. Still I appreciate all of your Insight and tips to help me get my house in order!

I agree with everything said in this video. Although I never had clutter in my life, I did donate some of my clothes and also gave some to my nephew. What is important though is that once we get rid something, do not replace it; otherwise, decluttering will become meaningless. I am happy to say that without my furniture, I can fit everything I own into a medium size car in one haul. I had to get rid my only pair of running shoes after 24 year, yep, no kidding, 24 years, because the sole on one shoe split in half while I was in Central Park. I guess Nike owes me nothing.🙂

Tend to multitask because I find more happens to get done and I get to everything (or almost everything). It's known not to be helpful, but it is for me. It's overwhelming and stressful too but it works. The choice paradox gets to me though.

Had to ask ChatGPT and this blows mine mind: Vegetables that are botanically considered fruits:
Green beans Peas Corn Artichokes Capers Olives Chickpeas Lentils Tomatoes Cucumbers Zucchini Pumpkin Eggplant Peppers Okra Corn on the cob Beets Celery Asparagus Broccoli Cauliflower Kohlrabi Fennel Salsify

Have you ever been diagnosed with adhd? I’ve watched several of your videos and you definitely say things about how you live your life that correlate to the way adhd people live…. Or struggle to live. You seem to be on a never ending quest for “bettering yourself” which I connect to how adhd people are always having to adapt and “learn” how neurotypical people manage life.

My most spectacular decluttering fail: I put my toddler son in the Jolly jumper at the door to his room while I tackled his outgrown clothes. As I got started, he had an enormous liquid poop, which shot out the back of the Jolly jumper, and down his legs, where it pooled on the cream colored carpet. I spent the rest of the day cleaning!
