I attended a HBCU. Because of Coach Prime, I attended my first HBCU football game a few weeks ago. Because of the passion Coach Prime expressed for Jackson State and other HBCU’s, I donated to a HBCU.
How many of us would give any portion of our salary to help a HBCU? Coach Prime did. Let’s celebrate what he did and respect his decision. All the material things Jackson State received while Coach Prime was there are still there. I believe his heart and soul is still with HBCU’s and he will continue to donate and be a beacon for the institutions.

I don’t think anybody can realistically blame him taking the opportunity. The disparity between what he will get at Colorado and JSU is just too immense to have reasonably expected differently. And he absolutely did good things during his time with JSU. But we also need to be real and understand that JSU long term is probably not going to be in a materially better place. As they’ve pointed out here most every major improvement is because of Prime and the relationships he leveraged. When Prime goes so do the relationships and fruits of them that were coming to JSU. The recruits he brought are all likely leaving with him. And there won’t be subsequent recruits going to JSU because there won’t be Deion to attract them. The issue is Deion wasn’t there for a period of time to build lasting improvements to the program that would live past him being there. And k don’t think it is reasonable to expect him to pass up $5.5M more a year on average to stay. But sadly the improvements came with him and will leave with him. The plight these schools have endured for decades.

Knowing that the kids only came to play at jsu because he was there. NowJSU's football program is better thanks to him but how much better now that staff and key players are all leaving is the real question. I'm so tired of people saying Deion gave JSU a blueprint. Deion was able to do what he did largely because he's an extremely charismatic NFL HOFr. Yes he emphasized the HBCU experience with recruits but his pedigree is what got him into those living rooms. As such, unless JSU is about to go sign Charles Woodson, what blueprint are you talking about. Also, what good is a blueprint when if he takes the materials with him when he leaves & given that he's implied that several people (players & coaches) are coming with him, that's exactly what he's done. I have no issue with Prime leaving. Frankly I always expected him to, but let's not act like he's leaving Jackson State in a position to keep on rolling.

Something that my father has said to me as a kid, that he still reminds me of to this very day, is how "you, have to take care of you, because no one else will." Deion Sanders made the best decision for his personal goals and aspirations. But he led Jackson State to a undefeated season before leaving. Deion showed and proved in an era when a lot of people talk big talk but couldn't prove a thing. The negative reaction by some in the Black community is the epitome of entitlement. The fact that it took for him to have great success at an HBCU shows how this society treats black football head coaches as far as hiring and job opportunities. They got mad at him for recruiting a top high school prospect to play for him at Jackson State that changed the trajectory of how HBCUs can produce great football talent as well as the PWIs.
