Aussie Here: The Bathurst circuit is in a class of its own. There really is nothing else like it in the world.
The reason the guy in the video makes the race sound so good is he "Mark Larkham" was a driver/owner and has driven Bathurst many times.
The "A" in Bathurst is pronounced like "cat" not "car". Aussies gets narky when names of places get butchered when it happens over and over. There are exceptions like "Thebarton". Me being a South Aussie I LMAO when I hear someone try to pronounce it.
If you really want to have your mind blown, look up "Australian inventions that changed the world".

Love this video - I must've seen it a hundred times and it never gets old. If you want to see some races, Supercars uploaded a whole heap of old races ('00s, early '10s) to CZcams during the covid lockdowns, which was awesome of them. Bathurst is THE race of the year, of course, but the Phillip Island track is gorgeous (I've been around it a few times on ride days, and it's even better in person), Adelaide will have you biting your nails every time the cars slide right to the fence around Turn 8, and there's nothing like watching a ton and a half of V8 take to the air over the Gold Coast chicanes.
The Supercars channel is here: www.youtube.com/@SupercarsChampionship. If you want to watch one of the most epic Bathursts ever I'd recommend the 2014 race ( czcams.com/video/ebayHuvb2ho/video.html ) but if you're not up for 8 hours of viewing, Josh Revell has a good summary of it here: czcams.com/video/XMkzDMAP-80/video.html .(I find his commentary a bit annoying, personally, but plenty of others seem to like it; YMMV.)
Hope you enjoy the trip down this particular rabbit hole!

Bathurst is the best racing bar none. As an Aussie I’m surprised that others who like racing are just learning about it. As a kid in the 70s we’d sit and watch the 500 mile, then later the 1000km race in October every year. Camping in front of the TV for the whole day. In the 80s we went to Bathurst to watch. Phenomenal. I will say though that the most compelling times were when the cars were based on real cars that you could buy instead of predominantly the same car with a kit to look like a road car.

These days this race is won by 10ths of seconds after 1000kms of racing but back in the day 1979, Peter Brock - The King Of The Mountain - won it by 6 Laps. That was roughly 15mins, and he raced it alone, all 1000kms. So when you watch this year's race in early October and you hear the name Peter Brock, and You Will Hear the Name Peter Brock, you will have some understanding of who he was..

I was fortunate to be at Bathurst in 2019 but not for the V8 Supercars, it was the 12 hours which is for GT cars. The race starts in darkness and I was at the top of the mountain. Seeing and feeling a whole grid of GT cars come over the top with the headlights on full was something I'll never forget. I'm hoping I can go back next year, 2024.

I’m in the Bathurst area as I watch this, drove around the track yesterday as it’s a public road when not being raced on .
One of the great tracks of the world.
Bathurst 1000 (km) is the race all us Aussies grew up watching.
BTW, 2nd video watched by you brother…
    Get your ass down here.
Thank you for showing us Aussies what we might sometimes take for granted 👍🏽

This is not just the one race but over years of racing accidents it is the greatest race in the world 5th Oct to the 8th Oct this year 2023. Can't wait. AND that road is just a normal road for travelling on.

Mark is a gun when it comes to explaining how those cars work, how the tracks play out. He's been there and done it. Bathurst is one of a kind. It can be sunny when the light turns green and pouring 3 hours later and cars plowing into the walls on slick tyres. That one lap, then do it 161 odd times more. They also run, not with the supercars, a 12 and 24hr race. There's really no circuit like it and the video does no juat ice to the changes in gradients. Nice video mate.

Greg Murphy's lap of the gods is a good one and Daryl Waltrips lap of Bathurst is another.. as a side note one of the Kiwi Supercars drivers (Shane Van Gisbergen) went over and raced in a NASCAR race in Chicago and won, that's worth a watch to compare the skills between the two as it was a street circuit which Supercars drivers are used to where as NASCAR drivers are not.

Aussie motorsport fans are spoilt with a track like this in our “backyard”!!
Yes there are a lot of accidents/crashes during a race but there are sections of the race where they just go round & round for hours with nothing happening!! The engineering of the cars these days means they can run @ 100% all day without engines & gearboxes failing!!!
In the old days pistons exiting the block were quite common going flat out down conrod straight!!

Just a fun fact that few outside Aussieland know, these days it is mandatory for there to be two or more drivers for the car, to do the 161laps or 1000kms. But up till the late 1980s some drivers did the race solo, the full 1000kms alone, Collin Bond, Allan Moffat and Peter Brock, to name a few but Moffat and Brock are the only two men to win the Bathurst race solo (Moffat did it twice).

  • @Rassskle
    @Rassskle Před 11 měsíci

The iconic Bathurst race doesn’t really have any more accidents than other races, but Bathurst is unforgiving.
Up hill with fast corners that are cambered to send you into the concrete fence......assuming you made it passed the bumps etc in the breaking area .
Being a public scenic road up and down a large hill ( very very small mountain ), the track is narrow with only 2 run off areas......first and last corners.
Every where else is lined by solid concrete walls that shouldn’t move....... make a mistake and you kiss the concrete..... unless lucky and you hit a tyre wall in front of the concrete....... or unlucky , miss the wall and fly into a sand trap or maybe even over the wall and out into space ..... then maybe roll down the mountain.
The concrete walls are there to stop cars damaging the trees ( half way up or higher ) or taking to flight and missing the trees....... but some drivers do at times leave the track and try to clear the fences.
Since 1970 they have kept “ improving “ the track by making it easier to drive and not as demanding.
By about the year 2050 it should be completely safe, sterile and boring and already extinct.

This is the greatest race in the Supercar Championship Series; there is no other series in the world that compares, and there is no car race in the world that comes anywhere close to adrenaline rush that this race produces. It can be either pure symmetry or pure chaos. This race is one of the longest in the Series, you repeat the circuit 161 times; covering 1,000 km in 6 hrs plus. Buckle up for the thrill of your life.

NASCAR drivers only go round in circles. in Australia we actually go around corners in both directions. the latest generation NASCAR chassis is based upon the Aussie Supercar chassis. i may also be biased but i personally think this would be one of the best promotional videos for a sporting event ever made. well done Larko.

It has history too, they've raced that road for nearly a century, all types of vehicles too.
Look up the Armstrong 500 or the Hardie-Ferodo 500/1000 if you want to see what are now vintage cars, but were then race tuned, ohh, and there were no safety barriers either, an off meant literally that, off the side of a mountain.

He talks tough. It may sound really melodramatic to someone who doesn't know much about this race. Believe the hype. He is an ex racing driver himself. This is a very tough and amazing race. It runs for 6 hours over 1000 odd kilometres. 161 laps. 6.213 km circuit. It is Australia's pride and joy. These big V8 sedans at maximum. Some truly world class drivers in these big heavy yet fairly fast racing cars.
