My Scottish husband said " That Scottish Lassie is fun to watch". This is my favorite reaction to a John Denver song.
I hope this is just a start to a deep dive into John Denver's catalogue of music. He was something seriously special.
I love the song Paradise. It's so good!
I knoww
@@kalmlykeabomb One of John Prine's best songs.
Would love to see you react to more JohnDenver!
Here are some of my favorites
Annieâs Song
Flower That Shattered the Stone
Perhaps Love
Take Me Home Country Roads
Sunshine on My Shoulders
Many people do not know that John Denver wrote and performed leaving on a jet plane under the name babe I hate to go which is a line in the song I think he included it on his demo debut in 66 or 67 most people remember Peter Paul and Mary doing that song but several other bands also did it
"He's having so much fun. Then I am too." Beth, we were ALL having so much fun watching you react to this.
Amen !!! From this guy to That Guy ... anytime men see a beautiful woman having fun, we just can't help but fall in line and have a great time too !!! Can I get a "Hell Yeah" ???
You're exactly right-"country" (as opposed to "western") music descends from Scottish reels that settlers brought over to the US in the 18th Century.
I cried for a week straight when he died...needlessly. The songs he would've written in all these years could've been mind blowing. RIP john.
John Denver. Incredible Singer-Songwriter and Legend.
RIP.
And actor!!
pilot, not so much :(
@@bennichols1113 that was uncalled for! as a matter of fact he was an excellent pilot who decided to ditch he broken plane in the ocean instead of trying to land on the ground where there were lots of people and families, so don't be such a smart ass!
Mountain music (bluegrass/country etc) are heavily influenced by the Scots-Irish immigrants. There is a PBS special about this and the way it made it's way through the Appalachians down the "Great Wagon Road" following the (mainly ) Ulster Irish Scots. The reason this sounds so familiar to you is because of those influences.
One of the best bluegrass fiddle players is Alison Krauss, now a famous country artist, but in 1983, when she was 12 years old, she won the Illinois State Fiddle Championship and the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass in America named her the âMost Promising Fiddler in the Midwest.
Just what I wanted to mention! It's so neat to learn the history of the music
Fun fact!
Do the Rabbit Hole.. The Scots-Irish musical legacy in the USA - czcams.com/video/oN3H2JPqKRY/video.htmlfeature=shared This is all deep in the core of US Country Music (Bluegrass & Folk).
Goes back very far... bluegrass music can be traced to the people who came to America in the 1600s from Ireland, Scotland, and England and brought with them basic styles of music.
They generally stay in pentatonic scales, quite often ornamental triples over simple harmonic structures, anyone listening to an Irish reel can find much the same in flat-picking guitar runs in bluegrass. Folk music is like that you bring along what you know, Celtic music though makes a lot of use of drone tones though.
Might say Germanic influence played a very important part in America and carried back ... steel stringed guitars, mandolins and dulcimers became staples, due the likes Bethlehem steel which was used by C.F. Martin and Gibson.
John Denver is wildly underappreciated. So glad for this reaction video
his version of CALYPSO really showcases his range. it was stunning.
Yes! Please do this one.
"his version"? John wrote this song. đâïž
@@catherinemcgrath630 true. there are lots of better versions of HALLELUJA than Leonard Cohens (my opinion-Bon Jovi is one of the best!)đ
The Eagle and the Hawk shows his tremendous range.
I love that you can see someone fall in love with John Denver in real time. Amazing.
I love this song! John was such a talented man, sad we lost him so early.
Listening to Johnâs songs makes me melancholy. Beautiful talent lost way too soon.
Now you need to listen to his songs, Take Me Home Country Road, I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane ,Annie's Song and Rocky Mountain High.
Annie's song , sunshine on my shoulder , sweet surrender , rocky mountain high
Perhaps Love and For You too! =)
I liked poems prayers and promises as well
@@jel9772 agree đŻ really there is no John Denver song that is bad lol heck even grandma's feather bed
This people that love John Denver, LOVE John Denver.
John Denver is a legend. He was a family favorite growing up and we use to listen to him all the time on cross-country summer car trips. Other people have already recommended songs but you really, really need to listen to some of his other stuff. You will love it all.
John Denver was so great. A great song writer and lyricist, it seemed like anything he did was gold. His "Rocky Mountain High" was my very first favorite song. His love for nature was a driving force in much of what he did. He even dove with Jaques Cousteau in which he had a great song, "Calypso", the name of Cousteau's science vessel.
The joy John had in performing is always so obvious.. He was so good...
Please share more of John's songs. He was an amazing singer, poet, songwriter, humanitarian and environmentalist.
Glad you enjoyed what we've known for many years. đâïžâ€ïžđđđŒ
This is one of the best songs ever! Iâm not a country fan, but I grew up during this time and I lovethis man!
For me, John's "Annie's Song" is the second greatest love song behind George Harrison's "Something."
Mum used to play John Denver records when we were kids and he quickly became a favourite in our family. One of my favourite songs of his is "Calypso" it has a very unique mix of vocal techniques I reckon you'd love it

"The song was written by John Martin Sommers, a friend of Denver's from Aspen who led a bluegrass group called Liberty. 'I had heard the song and invited them on tour with me as an opening act,' Denver says. 'But when I heard the song, I knew it was made for me. It had so much energy and it was a great song for concerts.' "

John Denver. His personality, soul, and voice so pure that his greatest hits album is called "A Song's Best Friend."
Check out The Steeldrivers, a bluegrass band that Chris Stapleton used to play with. It's awesome!
His breath control is ridiculous love your work Beth Love and Respect
John Denver was such a talent. Annie's song by him is a must listen â€
I remember my mom used to play his music when I was little. This is one of many good songs he wrote and performed. Country roads is my favorite song.
He didn't write it.
As the person who suggested the bluegrass theme, I'm so glad that you enjoyed that as much as you did and even though it wasn't one of the songs that I suggested, I think it turned out to be a really good introduction to the genre for you. :)
Thanks, John!
This is called " Old-time music"..not Bluegrass and not at all an introduction to that genre therefor.
This is bluegrass..by the guy who developed the style

My mom and I loved him and were able to see him a few times, twice in front row. I had a shirt that said thank God I'm a country girl, he pointed to me and smiled. He was a treasure. You should do more of him, Annie's Song will bring a heartwarming tear to your eye. Just loved that you enjoyed him so.
What a great story!
Yes John Denver had an excellent voice. Check out The Eagle and the Hawk for his true vocal range.
I said the same thing before I saw your comment.
John Denver has to be the best American Singer Songwriter ever. Hes like family. R.I.P.
You're absolutely right, that's exactly where Bluegrass came from. I'm of Irish descent (My Grandmother came over from Ireland with a maiden name of Harrigan and I have a lot of McGarrity and O'Shaughnessy cousins!) and I completely feel you when you say "This feels like home". That's the kind of music I grew up with.
He had such a beautiful, clear voice... miss it.
John DenverâŠFolk, Country, PopâŠa GOAT
Sadly John's music has become forgotten. Great voice, also plays the fiddle. I'm very aware of all his songs heard on the radio. Very successful in the 70s. Sadly he left us way too soon.
Well, the good news is that his music is finding a way to go viral again. His slow, longing voice in Take Me Home Country Roads connects with everyone in a way that is just universal. Cause everyone has a place they want to belong!
J.D. was SUCH a big deal thru the 70s and 80s and is now all but forgotten by mainstream radio, oldies, you name it. I predict he will be "rediscovered" sooner vs. later and appreciated for the incredible singer/songwriter he was. Gone too soon.
John Denver = Joy.
RIP John Denver, gone all too soon. Best singing friend the Muppets ever had.
YES!Great comment.I had the 8 track soundtrack for The Muffet Movie,The Rainbow Connection when I was a child.đ€Ł.Loved it!!I listened to that on CZcams recently and was a tad shocked how great thoes songs had been arranged.
You're correct in hearing Scottish and Irish influences. Bluegrass music came out of the coal mining states of West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. These states received a big migration of Scots who were displaced to Ireland and emigrated to these states for work in the mines. Much of the music is very mournful as life in the coal mines was hard.
Thanks for checking out John Denver! Heâs always been one of my favorites. In fact he was my very first concert. Even though I was only 6 I still remember dancing around to all his tunes. Thanks Beth!
"Take Me Home, Country Roads" is my favorite from John Denver
Definitely look at "Take Me Home, Country Roads" for more John Denver!
I was born in Northern Ireland in the 70s and grew up in Western Canada. Your reaction to this song is exactly the same as mine. As a singer and guitarist, I absolutely love this song.
How can anyone NOT feel joyful with this wonderful song!?!?!?!!!! EEE-HAW!!
He is an icon in american music. His library of work and contributions to american singer/songwriter folk music is 2nd to none
I loved John Denver's music and cried when I heard of his passing. He left us with a lot of good music and I regret that he died so young.
When I was A kid you couldn't help but Love John . We heard a lot of John back then
His song âTake Me Home, Country Roadâ - is pretty much the State Anthem of West Virginia.
Same with Colorado and Rocky Mountain High
When I was a kid -- from about 12 - 22 -- I was a John Denver fanatic, but I was always a little embarrassed by that. Even though I adored him and his music moved me, I felt like he wasn't cool or respected. You would think the fact that he was one of the best selling artists of his era AND hosted The Muppet Show multiple times would have been proof enough that wasn't true. Now, watching all the rockers and rappers and vocal coaches just bliss out over him, I see I had nothing to be embarrassed about. Thanks for a great reaction video.
That's my favorite John Denver song. And seeing that it made someone else happy and smile and want to do a jig, like it does me, made me happy.
Beth my dear, my first ever record as a five year old was John Denver at Sydney Opera house. His composition "Annie's Song" is gorgeous vocally and emotionally charged. And yes bluegrass certainly has major folk vibes. Check out Union Station band "Forget about it" for pristine vocals and band. Love your style and generous tips we mortals can understand.
My favorite John Denver album!
It's great to see how a Scots-Irish type song from the US can easily jump over the pond and give joy to a true Scot :)
I was lucky enough to have seen John Denver perform in concert. Believe it or not I saw him in Scotland in the 80's. An awesome concert and night to remember for a Yank in the U.K.
I had the privilege of seeing him live and he never gets enough credit for how high quality his voice really was. If you are interested, you should listen to a short song he did called The Eagle and the Hawk; it's an amazing how his voice takes on a soaring quality in a song about soaring beings.
"Good morning starshine. " I needed a ginger fix and there you were. I've been a JD fan since before I heard him. Peter, Paul and Mary "Leaving on a jet plane"."Country roads" heard weekly at West Virginia football games, Calypso " for Jacques Cousteau. "Annie's song" to win his wife back. And my favorite Christmas album with the Muppets. We lost him when the horizon met the experimental airplane in which he was practicing. I have no doubt we have missed out on several songs. We'll just have to make do with the wonderful library he left behind. Thanks Beth, great memories.
My first ever concert when I was 10 was John Denver in 1983
I'm not a country music fan, but my dad was, so we had a lot of John Denver playing when I was growing up. Also Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash.
I love John Denver's music. I got to see him not long before his passing.
As a HUGE JD fan since the early '70s, I have heard and seen him perform this song countless times. It definitely has a Celtic sound and feel. As many commenters have said, American folk and bluegrass sprang from Scots-Irish folk music; my own soul music. Watching your reaction, Beth was a joy.
I never saw him play the fiddle, though, and am again in awe of his talent. There was another fiddle player in the band, but he was obviously second-string and John was doing the lead melody, which was pretty intricate. He did play guitar (6- and 12-string) mostly, and excellently, but also piano on a couple songs. Now I am wondering what other instruments he played that I missed. He was great with a backup band and singers, but listen to and watch his solo performances to really appreciate his playing skill and the depth of music he himself created, while also singing and making it all look effortless.
I was fortunate to see him live twice, years apart and in very different venues. Both were amazing, and both times the band left the stage for a break mid-concert while John carried on by himself. That part was magical. The last time was just over two years before his death and I am forever grateful that I experienced that night. It also made my husband into a fan. I still miss him 25 years (and nine days) later and am happy to see a renewed appreciation for his talent and music lately.
Nice analysis. Your explanation of how to train and keep your vocal abilities is always fascinating.
Interesting choice for bluegrass because John Denver is more identified as a country western singer-songwriter playing guitar. His first big hit "Leaving On a Jet Plane" wasn't even sung by him. Peter, Paul and Mary recorded it as more of a folk ballad.
It does get confusing for people outside of the USA it is just so large that different areas developed different musical traditions.
This song has been used in so many tv shows and movies.
John Denver was a native of my state - he was born in Roswell, NM. And made Colorado his home for the majority of his life. His life was cut short, when he died piloting an experimental plane that he had just purchased.. out over the Pacific Ocean in California. 1997 was a tough year, as we lost many wonderful people such as Princess Diana, Gianni Versace, John Denver and Mother Theresa of Calcutta in like 8 week timespan.
John was a simply brilliant singer.
Please do more John Denver! He was such a gifted vocalist, instrumentalist, and songwriter!
I grew up listening to music like this. I'm a vocal tenor, but do fancy falsetto when the genre calls for it. Notwithstanding being a Metal-Head, I listen to country/folk once in awhile. Not just the music, but I'm impressed how John and other artists have no problem voicing their opinion on their chosen lifestyle. RIP John Denver, but by far, one of the greats.
Beth you are sooo adorable I canât even describe you. Thanks for making me smile!!!
John is amazing. Nothing but talent.
Been a John Denver fan since the 1970's , one of the best folk writers and singers ever , check out alot of his other stuff too please .
Thank you for reacting to iconic singers, and groups, from the past. I know these performers better than most of today's artists. It's a real treat to see them again.
Me too I hope you dig into more John Denver seeing the reaction on your face and commenting that it felt like home is a warm and wonderful feeling to a Colorado boy who grew up listening to him. Even though he's not from Colorado he made this place his home and to see somebody from across the world smile and have that feeling is wonderful. Please dive more into John Denver
John Denver was absolutely phenomenal
I love this song. Its so fun to dance to. I never expected anyone to ever react to this
He really was an extraordinary singer. Listen to Annie's Song. Amazing vocal.
Saw him twice in concert...wonderful show both times...
He so loved and enjoyed the bonding, the fellowship that came with his music. What a treasure he is.
I think you would have anenjoyable time exploring the music of John Denver, as well as finding out more about who he was
I loved your reaction Beth, very spontaneous. Actually it's a very happy song, capable of raising the spirits of any person. Great reaction!!!
How fun it would be to be able to produce sound like this and then be able to play with it. Green with envy, i love this song the way John sang it.
Feel so blessed to hear him twice in Concert in Germanyâ€
Country Roads is very good although I think my favorite song was Colorado High. If you want to explore some Dark Grass check out The Dead South, In Hell I'll Be in Good Company. This band has roots in the darker songs of Scotland, Ireland and England. One very classic was Oxford Girl changing to Knoxville Girl.
In hell I'll be in company is a good song but not there best song lol. Heaven in wheelbarrow or gunslinger glory or honey you, or my favorite deep when the rivers high. There cover of house of the rising sun was pretty good too
Love John Denver and really enjoyed your reaction. Would love to see you do more of him.
I was lucky to have grown up listening to his music...wayyy back. He had everything : vocals, songwriting, instrumentalist, performer. I'm so glad to see a new generation loving his music too.
Please react to Charlie Daniels The Devil Went Down To Georgia. He was a master with the fiddle.
Ahh I love John Denver, grew up listening to my mothers records of him and still have those and play them. He was wonderful, may he R.I.P. I hope you react to more of his songs. :)
My mom was a huge Denver fan when I was growing up. I'm not a mega fan but I do have this and Grandma's Featherbed on the memory card in my car. They're fun, upbeat songs.
If you're not familiar with John Denver, he's an American original -- not really country, not really folk, not really pop, but a stunningly popular and successful crossover artist due to his amazing tenor voice, his amazing songwriting, and his infectious genuine personality. You need to hear "Rocky Mountain High", "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Annie's Song", "Grandma's Feather Bed", "Calypso", "I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado", "Poems, Prayers, and Promises", "Leaving on a Jet Plane", and if you really want high notes "The Eagle and the Hawk".
This made me so happy! Your joy in discovering John Denver is contagious, and I grew up hearing him so much that I tended to take him from granted. I suspect you would love a lot of the more traditional bluegrass music as well. :-)
I've listened to John Denver for years. Loved your reaction. Your smile and glow made me smile.
Wow, this is probably the most joyful ive ever seen you ! Your attitude is contagious
My favorite John Denver songs are the ones where his voice just soars. Others here have pointed to Calypso, but my personal favorite is The Eagle and the Hawk.
Love John Denver's music. Such a huge loss to music, and fans, when he died. RIP John, still enjoying your music and new converts every day.
grande John God bless you for ever
John Denverâs Wild Montana Skyâs is another great song of his.
With what you said about his voice, You would absolutely go nuts for his vocals on the song Calypso.
John Denver was great, and well worth looking into. This was almost a novelty song for him, though it was a big hit and I liked it as a kid. He is really more of a country/folk singer. He has a lot of really beautiful songs, and some that really show is voice much better. Just to pick a few off the top; check out "Country Roads," "Annie's Song," "Rocky Mountain High," and "Calypso."
My favorite artist since music class in the 2nd/3rd grade. I've been to several of his concerts, and the only artist I know of who can just walk out on stage solo and still sound terrific. Sadly, the last concert I went to was just a few months prior to his death.
Suggestions: Annie's Song, Sunshine on my Shoulders, Fly Away ( with Olivia Newton John), and Leaving on a Jet Plane.
You hit it on the head Beth. The language and cultural links between West and northwestern England are Fascinating. Thomas Sowell EXPLAINING Current Black Culture goes in to where the music and culture of the "Crackers and Rednecks" of the antebellum South came from and how they evolve. @
John Denver is how I learned to sing when I was 3. Then I moved on to mostly rock singers, mostly Steve Perry. Liked the analysis. Cheers!
Take me home, country roads, a classic!
Hello Beth. I'm just a truck driver from the US. Something of a country boy myself. But I happen to know for a fact that American folk music, like John Denver plays, is ABSOLUTELY Celtic in origin!
The original 1700s era settlers in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and much of the American South were, in fact, Scottish and Irish. And they brought their fiddles! đ»đ
I would love to see someone do some Scots Irish folk dance to John Denver. That would just fit so well. Particularly a Ceilidh.
John always sounded to me like he played his music and sang with dedication to the arts.
