  • It's time to leave Malta for now and head east.
    We're embarking on a multi-day passage that will take us to Sicily and along the heel of the boot of Italy before we cross over to Greece.
    We're enjoying some lovely sailing conditions in Sicily. The weather is perfect, and the sea is just beautiful.
    We drop into Syracuse to stock up on provisions and pick up some parcels.
    Syracuse is a stunning place with so much history and charm. We're looking forward to exploring it in Autumn but for now, we get everything we need for the next leg of our journey.
    With our supplies restocked and parcels collected, we're ready to continue our journey east to Greece.

    When you return to Ortigia make sure you visit Fratelli Burgio at the northern end of the market. It was one of the early slow food movement delis. Not inexpensive but a place you can find the very best of sician produce. I especially recommend you stock up on caponata, preserved tomato paste and preserved tuna. They also have the best bottarga.

    Its such a shame you didn't get to spend time in Ortigia. It was one of the most beautiful town sin the Med. When you return if you can spend a couple of nights. It has a wonderful fresh market in the mornings (not Sundays) and the whole town has incredible architecture. The main square is just a delight to sit in - better than the seaside restaurant strip/tourist traps near the Fountain of Arethusa, but the Fountain itself is interesting.

    when you head to Greece, Kefalonia's main harbour is very safe and well provisioned, but Fiskardo in the far north and Ithaca are more beautiful in my opinion. Also if you get one of those rare days with no wind from the north/west Shipwreck Bay on Zakinthos is magical to overnight. The tourists only come for a few hours in teh middle of the day but it is untenable most afternoons because of the sea breeze.

    Would really like to know how you get parcels delivered to next port when you are cruising. Love your channel.

      Thanks Simon. It is not easy to get deliveries. We have used Amazon and UPS drop locations quite often and normally work well. In Syracuse one of my parcels was at a UPS drop location whereas the one that got turned around was Amazon. We have also asked local businesses if we can use their address. We got a big delivery of Coppercoat to a cafe in Malta. We stayed in the bay a couple of weeks and visted the cafe a few times. Marinas will also recieve parcels for you. This is a good option as long as they turn up on time as staying in a marina is expensive. I'm looking forward to when we can use a drone delivery service linked to our AIS them my address will be SV Helios, Earth:) Regards Richard and Jude

    How do you get packages delivered and collect them to places you don't 'live' at, but are just visiting on passage. What are the mechanics of it, the top tips?

    • @sailinghelios2023
      @sailinghelios2023  Před 18 dny

      It’s tricky! We keep a list of things to buy and manage them at the same time. We check out delivery options for each as that tells us how long for delivery (so we know when to order) and delivery options. Some want an address. Some will accept delivery points like UPS/DHL/delivery points - they are shops or business that take deliveries. They are the best. We never use parcel lockers as they only hold for 2-3 days. If we aren’t using one of those delivery points (not available for what we are ordering or none in the town) we have some other options. Ask at the post office. In France they take deliveries and hold for two weeks. In Greece they told us they’d do that, but actually turned the parcel away. We enquired and they said they only take ‘postal’ packages - what’s in their system, not couriers but of course we don’t know how something is going to be transported 🤷‍♀️. So watch that. In that case, we had to get a taxi to the couriers distribution centre.
      Best option is to have a place that will accept it for you. We’ve used a cafe that we’d been frequenting, the agent who checked us in to Greece, and marinas. We have some stuff to get now and have decided to send to a marina where we have to go for some boat work anyway. We call in advance and they’ve agreed to hold them for us. It’s tricky! When I go home i take small carry-on only and bring a big suitcase back!
