Is this the best watermaker for us? - Sailing Helios S02E07 #watermaker
Our future plans are to sail around the world but first, we need to get ourselves and our boat ready for this adventure.
We want to install a water maker but there are a couple of things that have bothered us with the typical water makers. The first is noise: typically, the high-pressure pumps are noisy and running them for 1-2 hours to make water can become quite annoying. The second is power: most water makers draw between 60-80 amps, which takes a big chunk out of your battery storage. These issues had me thinking that a high-capacity unit would be best - so we don't have to use it often, and we can get the water we need in the shortest time. However, running it infrequently has its own problems as water makers like to be used frequently to stay fresh. If you don’t, then you have to at least backwash them with fresh water or pickle them.
In this episode, we talk with an expert in this field, and I get introduced to some components that change my thoughts and design. This new design runs silent and consumes about 11 amps. The downside is that it only produces about 15 litres an hour. However, with such a low power consumption it could run off excess power when my batteries are already full. All this means that we run it often and thus this would keep the system and us happy. Jude is looking forward to not washing the dishes in salt water when the tanks are running low.

      Yes the engine died. It ran out of fuel. This is how we found out we had a very inaccurate fuel guage. From that point forward I had three options, continue into Monastir or sail to Malta or Sicily. Malta or Sicily would have meant sailing for two days in 30-40 knot winds with the potential of running low on power so needing to hand steer. Depending on possible anchorages I might have still needed to be towed into a marina. So I thought my best option was to continue to Monastir and get a tow into the marina there. In the end they did not understand what I wanted so I had to sail into the marina. Now most marinas you are not allowed to sail into but because I had done my homework I knew we could do this here and leave if we needed. My only concern was fishing pots at the entrance of the marina and this was mitigated by the Coastguard vessel leading the way into the marina. Thanks for the question. Regards Richard

    Fascinating to see someone put a logical approach into practice. I've often wondered why boats don't use smaller output watermakers constantly topping up the system in place of large ones which work infrequently and therefore require the pickling process. I thought it might be because the small high pressure pumps weren't available, but clearly that's not the case. Is there any chance of a system schematic? Also details on the membrane?

      Exactly. I have always thought that the high pressure pumps have to be noisy so if this was the case I might as well make the most water in the shortest possible time. However, there is no need to do this when the pump is quiet. It takes water making from an event to a background process. The membrane he has recommended is a VONTRON SW11-2540 Sea Water membrane but I believe and membrane designed for SW is ok. He recommends 2540 size as the are the most commonly available. I don't have a schematic but you can find very good schematics on the DIY Water Makers Facebook page. There is really nothing different with this setup other that the type of pumps used.

      Insurance is fine as long they are installed to standard. For us there is a Australian/New Zealand standard for this.

    You could shave off another amp or two plus a bit quieter if you go with a Mabru aircon style raw water pump. Multiple boats in our owners group have used them for their solar/lifep04 aircon setups. They are overpriced through Mabru but you can find them wholesale for 1/4 the price or less. We would struggle personally with that super low water output since we have a big dog we rinse twice a day after shore leave.

      Thank you I will have a look at that pump. Yes, this works for us as our consumption is not really high. If you wanted, you could double the system from the filters onwards with a low water pump that would provide enough volume.

      You are correct. We wanted to get a tow from outside the marina. It is risky to sail into a marina and forbidden in most of them but in the end that is what we did.

    I am confused. The pump shown has a flow rate of less than 1/2 a gallon a minute . It is my understanding that for the membrane to work properly it needs a flow rate of at least 3 gallons a minute . In trying to fashion a system I always run into the dilemma of finding a pump with the proper flow rate versus cost. Yes, a CAT pump will do it but at a cost of $1,500 or more. Mister pumps like this one, while inexpensive, do not produce the flow rate required. Or have I been mis-informed?

      The membrane specifications that I have seen don’t have minimum flow rates of sea water only maximum. They have minimum flow rates of product water but this is just talking to their efficiency. I trust what Keith has done. CAT pumps are expensive and loud. This pump might be used for misting but it was designed for the oil industry to work reliably 24/7

      You have good reason to be confused. This system is a total dud. In a correctly designed system, only a fraction of the Sea water pumped is purified. The rest is there to flush away the salt buildup. For a 12v system, you need a Energy Recovery Pump like a Spectra. $$$$. And you need good pre filters. 20 and 5 microns.

    Our watermaker was initially hooked up to the same throughhull as the toilet. That's not a good idea because of the chance of contamination. Make a new throughhull. Congratulations on the washing machine and inverter!

      @@dboboc, maybe because they didn't have the ability to do it? Most of them didn't even refrigeration until long after they'd started sailing. Do you live with out electricity and running water just because people did it before you? More importantly, have you ever lived on a boat for more than a few weeks. We've lived on our boat for 4 years before crossing into the Med and sailing half the year instead of full-time. With solar, there's no reason to forego modern conveniences.

      I know! They are 3kg gas bottles and we use gas for 100% of cooking and tea/coffee etc. sometimes we boil water to heat it for dishes too. It’s frustrating.

      13 kg bottles x 2 Supplement with an induction hob You’ll easily go six months possibly more. Cheaper to fill a bottle that’s large and yours than swap. Over reliance on so called renewables is costly. But knowing how they bump up your electric demands is good. Technology is moving forward fast but even the big guns still run generators Finding a balance is tough but can be costly

    What membrane does he use on the system? For the cost, and if you are making sufficient power, you could probably just build two systems, then you'd be doubling your water making capacity very easily.

      He uses a SW-2540 membrane. I am not sure of the manufacturer but I think there are only a few. If you wanted to make more water then you could double the system from the high pressure pump onwards and have a higher volume low pressure pump. Currently we use 15 litres of water per day, but of course we do minimise usage and we would probably use more once we have a water maker. So for us I think this size unit will be fine. We also have 530 litres of storage so we can go a while before we are out so that allows us to target days with good sun. Regards Richard

    Hi Richard, Jude, thanks so much for sharing your journey and experience so far. We are a kiwi couple cruising on a cat in Croatia, we also checked in with Sofia in Preveza and got her to stamp us out, she was great and everything very straight forward. We were not able to stamp out in Croatia unfortunately, and from here we want to spend another 4 months cruising Italy, France and then heading to Barcelona for the Americas Cup. We are thinking of heading back to Greece to get stamped out again before we go to Italy. I am interested to know how things go in Italy and France once you are stamped out.       In Monastir you can haul out at the marina or the fishing port that is close by. Good stainless fabricators.

    The Schengen rules are clear, this is simply exploiting a failure in immigration processing in certain locations and it doesn’t make it legal. Rather like not reporting your income and then claiming that means you don’t have to pay any taxes.

      Yes they are clear. And they state that it only counts when you stay in the territory of a member state. We never do this. This is why we get asked if we are staying on our boat by officials. We stay on our boat in their territorial waters. This is the difference.

The regulations you are relying on apply to *commercial crew* not owner operated yachts. At the very least I would avoid advertising what you are doing in a public forum like this.

      A skipper’s license is independent of this process I believe. But it is a requirement in some countries even if you were getting stamped in. I had to provide my RYA Coastal Skipper for Greece.

    Hi, had this feedback on a fb page UK sailing. Could you comment spcifically on the question of miss use of the definition paid crew? Its a bit long but dont want to script it and seem as if im attacking in anyway as its not intended. So the way this proposed 'work around' works is that you pretend to be an employed 'crew member' on board a 'ship' thereby giving you the rights of a genuine seafarer to enter a port with the ship and stay within the confines of the port or city without visas or further paperwork. When at sea, you simply claim you are not checked in or out of anywhere because you are on 'innocent passage' or 'In Transit' Where it fails is that if challenged, you have to be able to prove that you are indeed a genuine 'Seafarer' and the convention is that you hold a physical contract of employment from the ships owner, you adhere to STCW training rules and that you hold a 'Seafarer's Identity Document' which you can produce on demand. It's not a co-incidence that many of these people have CZcams channels. They claim that they are 'Journalists' working full time on the boat and therefore are eligible to claim that they are 'employed' a crew on the vessel. Personally, I don't think that holds up to much scrutiny if challenged by officials. I asked Chat GPT to explain this and I couldn't have put it better myself: Attempting to be signed on to a crew list of a private boat to avoid Schengen visa rules is generally not a viable strategy and can have serious legal consequences. Here are the key points to consider: ### Regulations and Requirements 1. **Genuine Crew Members**: - **Definition**: A crew member is typically defined as someone who is employed or contracted to work on the vessel, performing duties essential to its operation and maintenance. - **Proof of Employment**: Immigration authorities may require proof of legitimate employment, such as a seafarer's employment agreement, crew manifest, and other relevant documentation. 2. **Visa Regulations for Crew Members**: - **Seafarer's Identity Document (SID)**: Genuine crew members often hold a Seafarer's Identity Document issued in accordance with ILO Conventions (such as ILO 185 or ILO 108). This is not intended for prolonged or personal travel within the Schengen Area. 2. **Compliance with Local Laws**: - It is crucial to comply with the immigration and maritime laws of each country within the Schengen Area. Attempting to circumvent these laws can have serious repercussions. ### Summary While genuine crew members on a vessel may have certain privileges regarding visa-free travel for specific purposes, attempting to exploit this status without legitimate employment and duties is not advisable. Certainly, most are too fully occupied at the moment with the illegal immigration issues to be very concerned with individual sailing couples. If there is a genuine, documented, legal way to do this that is backed by written legislation that will stand up to scrutiny by a customs / police official anywhere in Europe, I'm all ears as most of us would like this to be true.

      Hi, we don’t consider this a workaround and we are never pretending to anything than what we are, crew on our our boat. When I read the Schengen document there is an appendix (vi) that covers arriving by sea and uses the terms crew, passengers and stowaways. Of those options I am crew. It covers private pleasure vessels in this section. So I think the officials that we deal with know this but there are a lot that don’t and wield the law as they understand it. One side of that is wrong and I’m not a lawyer so I’m not going to make judgment.

I cant find VI but am reading section 3 Sea Boarders. this is covered by 3 sections I can see, 3.1 General 3.2.4 Pleasure boating 3 Seamen. Section 3, Seamen is clear as to needing ILO docs. General 3.1 Does not link to section 3 Seamen in any way so I have to assume we go to 3.2.4 Pleasure boating. It is clear on its requirements for Crew and passenger list requirements and responsibilities. No mention of passport requirements other than noted number. Pleasure boating 3.2.4. I can see where this is being used as a means probably because the link is not clear as to the requirement for a passport stamp and documentation record to track days of entry. I like the idea and will try and talk to immigration at Roscoff or Brest shortly.

      @@sailinghelios2023 you have arrived in rhe EU then and that covers the same area and rules. When you enter you have to submit a pre arrival form 24 houra beforehand for pleasure craft. Are you saying you arrive un prompted and show the entry crew list only? If you see my other post this is being challanged because you are not contracted seamen. Im not trying to dispute what you are doing, trying understand how it can work when we are told we cannot do this legally.

      If you read the actual Schengen rules then it includes an appendix (VI) that covers arrivals by sea. This includes pleasure boats. Pleasure boats have less restrictions than other vessels under the rules. The requirement is for you to be crew( I can’t see this defined anywhere) but I am certainly not a passenger. These are the only two distinctions other than stowaways and that I’m certainly not either.

    Thanks for sharing this series of videos explaining the “Crew” route to avoid Schengen rules. It’s been a thorough series and appreciate the time and effort to create. We have just purchased our new boat in Sicily and will commence our sailing season as soon as we return back from Australia. I hear so often that there are a lot of inconsistencies and sometimes it could be who you get on one day will affect how you travel. My question is has this process been tested and verified with the centralised body responsible for the Schengen law and its implementation? Could it be worth seeking this advise from the “horses mouth” so to speak in order to appease the masses and provide some clear guidelines on the crewing process? While it is good for some it may be interpreted as not so good for others and subsequently identifies floors in a legalised process that becomes open to a menagerie of interpretation. I too want to sail within the laws of schenghen. Just wish the powers that be gave a clear guideline on scheghen and crew options as one definitely outweighs the other. Thanks for sharing my search will continue 😂😂😂

      Welcome to the EU. I'm not sure I would confident in the quality of the response to ask that question. Having read a lot of documents on this that relate to Schengen I could argue that it is quite clearly spelled out already why this is the practise across so many member states. There are other documents I would like to read but there are a lot that I would need to buy and right now it works for me and many others the way it is.     Now this is an interesting debate. I have come across the "seamans card" (MSF 4509) in the UK . This is issued by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. It costs (at time of writing June 2024) £105. Theoretically, it is for commercial vessles and large yachts, but any yachts crew seems eligable.

      Hi, thanks for the comment. This is Jude. I forgot to mention this in the video - another question I asked the agent was about the Seafarers Identity Document (aka Seaman’s Book). Many people say you need your have one. The agent said it’s not necessary. We’ve looked into it and I think it would be helpful. We know of people who have one and just hand it over and get through fine. Some say you need that plus a current contract of employment. My friends weren’t asked for the contract. I think it’s well worth getting if you can.

    That was an excellent update, thank you. I was wondering how things went for you this time around after figuring out the process last season. As you mentioned, it's important to have a game plan for entering countries or places that know the system, while also having a strategy to identify countries likely to stamp your passport and planning those visits for parts of your journey where it would have the least impact on your overall sailing itinerary. Sounds like the sailing community benefits greatly from sharing what works, what doesn’t, and discussing questions with agents. It's great to hear that this collaboration is helpful to all sailors. Which direction are you headed? I see you're traveling around the Ambracian Gulf. I am sure you will have heard about a couple of islands just north of your current location, Paxos and Anti-Paxos, which are definitely worth visiting. Paralia Voutoumi Beach on Anti-Paxos is a must-visit, and don't miss the walk up to Bella Vista restaurant for lunch, where you can enjoy fantastic views north over the bay (and your yacht). After that, head to Mongonissi on the Southern end of Paxos where you can easily dock your dinghy and step straight into Carnayo Gold Lounge Cafe. From there, continue north to Gaios and Lakka-these were my top picks from 14 years ago…for what it is worth. Anyway, I’m busy making notes from your great updates.

    Great video. The trouble IS that other countries or even parts of countries DO NOT allow the 'crew list' approach, which is designed for those operating commercially, and those who have an official seafarers book. So, try what you have in many Spanish ports, and you will be unsuccessful and you 'll end up getting passports stamped.....unless it's summer in the Balerics, in which case you may get away with it! So, you are right...good research, splash some cash, and be lucky. Always better lucky than good. Power to you. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi it’s Jude, thanks for the comment. Yeah, we have heard that but our experience to date is that it’s been accepted - France, Italy, Malta and now Greece. One reason we use an agent is to protect us should we find ourselves in a situation where we are accused of not having acted appropriately. We can direct them to the agent and we are protected. The agents are bonded which means they are legally responsible for their decisions. So far so good! We are happy to be the guinea pigs testing this and sharing our experience as so many yachties are burdened by the 90 day limit and would love to be free of it. All the best, Jude

    Hello Richard and Jude... Many thanks for the time and effort to put this most informative (and potentially consequential to many of us) video. A Question/Clarification when you have few minutes: So, from your recommendation---to avoid getting passport stamped---I gather this means that if one winterizes one's boat in the MED but flies back and forth for the summer months, and thus gets the passport stamped at the airport... it won't / CANNOT work. (E.g., once moving on the boat, arrange to stamp the passport for exiting EU… and continuing the time while cruising in status similar to yours.) Am I correct… that won’t work.)

      Hi, thanks for your comment. If you enter the EU at an airport your passport would normally be stamped. Ours were and we engaged an agent to arrange a stamp out at immigration some time later. I also understand that if you arrange your arrival by plane with an agent they can meet you at the airport and walk you through immigration so that your passport won’t be stamped. We haven’t done this but I’ve heard agents in Greece at least provide this service. You’re right, you can’t just get stamped out on the pretext of leaving the EU but not actually leave. That would not be legal. Does this answer your question?

    Hi My name is Pat I enjoy watching your videos I'm from Gozo and i live in Melbourne i see you were in Gozo you have to go and visit the inland sea in Dwejra you can anchor helios in the port behind fungus Rock it's a large natural port and take the little boat towards the cave it takes you about 10 minutes to the cave from the port then you can enter towards the inland sea you have to make sure that you are clear because only one boat can enter at one time enjoy Thanks for your videos

      I would have thought so too. However you don’t get the sharpie pain like gallstones and the pain is in the centre of your chest so it feels like heart burn instead. Also because it is practically dead it stops being able to give you pain.

Be sure to stop by Monganissi Bay, where you can anchor and row to the Carnayo Cafe, stepping right from your dinghy into your seat. Then, sail across to Anti-Paxos and anchor in Paralia Voutoumi Bay. From there, enjoy a walk up from the beach to the Bella Vista Restaurant for lunch, with stunning views of your yacht in the crystal-clear waters below. I'm sure you'll love these locations. We spent two weeks there about 12 years ago, staying in an apartment on Longos Bay, right on the pier. We had a boat and a couple of scooters to explore the islands-fantastic and some of our best memories!

    If you are in Malta next Anzac Day there is a dawn service at St Edwards College (not far from the Birgu on the south side of the Grand Harbour). Some of the Gallipoli wounded were evacuated there as it was used as a hospital and some are buried there.
