I still remember, when I's a minor child, asking my father where's Ceylon, he said it's the "current" Sri Lanka, and explained it to me as it's like India/Bharat, when Europeans kept it occupied & called it as Ceylon... Ceylon is weird in this list. That country only changed it's name. There are more examples like that. And come to think of it, a lot of current states were once part of a country that no longer exists. Mexican Empire, greater Colombia, the Kingdom of Holland or it's predecessor the Batavian Republic. UK was once England, Wales, Scotland. The Roman Empire, Yugoslavia, East and West Germany, but before that the German Empire, or before that the Holy Roman Empire. Tanganyika, Zanzibar, etc etc etc

In the 19th century there were 2 "khanates" in Central Asia which were descended from the Great Mongol Empire. These were the khanates of Bukhara and Kokand. The khanate of Bukhara ruled the fabled city of Samarkand. When the Russians began expanding into Central Asia in the mid-19th century the British tried unsuccessfully to establish alliances with these 2 khanates. They became Russian protectorates and were abolished after Czar Nicholas II was overthrown and the Communists came to power. Today much of the former Khanate of Kokand is part of Uzbekistan.

Also Vermont wouldn't have desired to join "Canada" in the 1780's, since that simply referred to a single colony that includes an area that is now the southern portions of Ontario and Quebec up to 1791 when they split into Upper Canada and Lower Canada; perhaps you meant "British North America" which was all of the British possessions north of the U.S.A. and New Spain.
