This weekend we used some of the deer leather we tanned this Fall to make a couple pairs of sandals for the Summer. We're really happy with how they turned out!
This is amazing! You two are getting so self sufficient and its nice to be able to achieve things that defy the narrative of constant consumerism. Good job and looking forward to more videos on what you accomplish next !
Oh by a meat slicing glove off of Amazon. That way if you ever have a misstep, it’s not gonna cut you. You can use it for a bazillion things. Well, and then, of course, slicing meat.
These turned out great! I have a friend who makes his own MukLuk style boots and he glues 2 pieces of leather together for the soles to make them last a bit longer.
If you wanted something that lasts even longer, you could use some tire rubber - I bet you could get an old tire for free from your local car mechanic.
Ewww, but human pee is also used as a deer repellent. My parents used it on our saplings when I was a teenager. Teenage me refused to squat and pee over an outside bucket, lol. It worked though!!
I have been wanting all leather sandals in part to have less plastic around and also to allow earthing in areas where there might be stingy bitey things about. I definitely want to try my hand at doing something like this for myself.
Thank you for this video I am SHOCKED by what it has opened my eyes to. At first I was thinking about how to reuse ♻️ the scraps left from the shoes and then I realized ….why don’t I have scraps from making my own shoes/clothing etc…because then my select items would actually FIT me and my body type nicely instead of made for the masses. Keep spreading your adventure I already grow a bunch of my own food for my family and I have a sewing machine somewhere. Thanks for lighting the fire under me ❤
They could use the scraps as a tie, like Sylvia had for her worker's apron or on the end of a loofah, or as decorative tassels on clothing, shoes, or pillows.
These look amazing and you gave me a great idea. My husband is going to a frontiersman camp in the summer and I had no idea how to make him sandals out of leather. Again thanks for the idea
This is so COOL dear Sylvan, yes nothing like making shoes or in this case sandals from something natural like deer leather, you're of the same mind as Brett @Vitality Massage, he's invented a back roller, but made totally of natural products, no synthetic junk plastic and he also developed a custom-made to your size sandal, also using leather, natural rubber(the one that is extracted from rubber trees), etc. Well thing for sure being Made in the USA, either by Brett or you Sylvan is 100% top-notch quality both in materials and manual labor.😁👍
this is awesome!! i would what you would do if you needed more arch support.. maybe layer two pieces of leather and whittle a piece of wood the shape you needed to put between the pieces??
Wondering why you made his sandals with the “soft” side of the leather facing down. It seems to me like it’s going to get ripped apart much more easily than if you had done the tougher, ‘skin’ side? Is there a particular reason?
Hi, I really curious why did you choose corn as your staple (I assume it’s what you grow the most) and not potatoes? Ive seen a lot of people who live off what the grow use potatoes as their main carb so I wonder is it just a preference thing or you decided on corn for a specific purpose?
Just wondering if you've ever grown any peanuts? i dont think theyre native to your area, but they seem like theyd be so good for calories and oil (and for fixing peanut butter cravings if you get them). Sorry if youve already answered this somewhere
We used to grow them when we lived in North Carolina, but they have a really long season so we haven’t tried them up in PA yet. We get a lot of nuts from the woods for our nut butter 🙂 (mostly hickory and black walnuts)
Please don't take this the wrong way, but there's something about your beautiful face. That makes me think that you are pregnant not that you're gaining weight or anything like that. There's the specific glow to your face anyway I just adore you.
As a Mom of four that's a big compliment ❤. There's always this beauty that expectant mothers get after a certain point of pregnancy that makes them radiate❤.
@@Katy_living_simply exactly! Not to be crass, but it's similar to a post-orgasmic glow. It very well could be their healthy lifestyle- why she's just radiating from within!

You two are incredible!
It must feel incredibly gratifying to make your own sandals!
Awesome sandals! ...and cool that they're made from a naturally treated leather, rather than leather treated with harsh, toxic chemicals.
Did you know they used to piss and shit to treat leather in the olden days. Great natural things, right??
@@singhmastr I'm dead. Thanks for sharing. 😂

Amazing!❤ You did a wonderful job. Simplistic style which is always the best. Classic. Congrats on your new adventure with leather. I loved them! ❤
I love this! I may make some from the deer I harvested!

Even if they don't last the outside world, these sandals would still make excellent indoor slippers
shout out to Ethan and his extra 30 seconds of piano

Looks cool!! Have you thought about adding a piece of pine or birch to the heel for extra structural support?
So cool.
This was sooooo cool omg
this is awesome!! i would what you would do if you needed more arch support.. maybe layer two pieces of leather and whittle a piece of wood the shape you needed to put between the pieces??
Yea that would probably work. Or just use a third strip of leather so it’s soft
Yes. Thank you! 🦌 👣
Cool

So since you guys soak acorns multiple times to get the tannins out couldn’t you use one of the soaking liquid wastes for the tanning process?
Yup! That’s actually what we poured back in on top of the acorns to make the tannin liquid
My husband & I are 54 & 57 & on disability. Are you willing & what would you charge to sell & ship to Bedford Pa?
We’re actually not selling these, but maybe one day?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I want to know what kind of liquid that the deer leather dip?
pls tell me
What if you made some for moo 😂😂😂
Loll I think she would eat them, she’s already way too interested in ours!

Can you make toothpaste without chemicals
Just the ingredients you have
Well technically you can’t make anything without chemicals because everything is a chemical 😉 but you can make homemade toothpaste from baking soda
@@HomegrownHandgathered ooo can you show us a tutorial
@@IndianTechno569gsprinkle baking soda on your toothbrush.
