I have atypical Trigeminal Neruralgia or TN2. I have pain 24/7. It's burning, boaring, stabbing pain constantly. I don't have anything compressing on it. I was in an accident when I was younger and literally ripped my face open and shattered everything. I had to have several surgeries growing up and also as an adult. I have a ton of scar tissue. The protective sheath of the nerve has been destroyed. I have damage in two of the branches. I am on several meds. I just have learned to live with it.

Dietary Recommendations in Trigeminal neuralgia
A healthy diet should comprise foods that:
Boost Immunity
Fight Inflammation
Rejuvenate Nerves
Inhibit Free Radical Formation
So, Eat More of the Following:
Brown rice, cooked or dried fruits such as cherries, cranberries, pears and prunes, and cooked vegetables such as artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, chard, collards, lettuce, spinach, beans, squash and sweet potatoes since they are rich sources of antioxidants that fight inflammation, ease nerve pain and strengthen immunity
Low saturated fat diets, intake of excessive saturated fats blocks the body from repairing the damage caused to nerves in the face
Seafood, beans, vegetables, fruits and very small amount of lean poultry such as chicken and turkey because these items are rich in vitamins that nourish the nerves and boost immunity
Eat predominantly raw or perhaps, 75% raw foods and 25% cooked but vegan foods
Drink alkaline water preferably and if you are unable to find alkaline water, drink spring water

Foods that cause sensations of heat (salsa, chili, and hot sauce), cold (mint), sweetness and sourness since they can potentially excite the trigeminal nerve and trigger pain.
Some have reported trouble with spices such as cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and black pepper. People who are sensitive to smell may get pain when eating foods with strong odors or from steamy foods.
Stimulants found in caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate and many soft drinks) and other sugar alternatives like aspartame have also been reported to trigger painful attacks in susceptible individuals.
Foods that should be eaten as minimally as possible are red meat, whole milk, cheese, butter, cream, pies, cakes, cookies, chocolate, candy, snacks, nuts and ice cream.
High acid foods (Citrus juices, tomatoes, gooseberries, etc.) lead to excess mucus production, and this excess mucus may exert pressure against sensitive nerves, triggering pain.
Eliminate foods that contain a high proportion of saturated fats like Butter, Ghee, Coconut oil, Cottonseed oil and Palm Kernel oil.
Home remedies for Trigeminal neuralgia
Heat packs and ice packs are known to relax muscles. For some people, placing ice packs over the cheeks and jaws is said to bring instant relief, whereas others find solace in using hot packs
Sipping on herbal teas is also said to have a calming effect on frayed nerves. Chamomile, comfrey, St. John’s wort, and lemon balm teas can bring relief from painful episodes.

I started traveling to UPMC for the migraine specialists because of how severe my migraines are, and now my pain has gotten so bad that I was recently told I need to go back to a neuro to have a panel of tests. I had the vascular decompression surgery after years of taking tegretol. The tegretol woked great for years and years...then it stopped working over night. Long story short, the pain became constant and I had the surgery. I woke up with a helluva headache, but never had the jaw pain again. (The headache DID go away within a week or so.)

Hello Meg, I am so glad you got your TGN fixed! It is very common to have a headache and nausea after this procedure, but the pain is usually gone.

I am sorry to hear that. When you get an evaluation, suggest that they start you on Tegretol first. That usually will take care of it in most people. If you do not tolerate Tegretol, or if it wears off, that is when surgery is considered. Hope you find some help!
Do you have to be on tegretol life long? Or does this medication work to stop the pain even once you stop taking it?

In 2012 I started having shocks on the left and around my left eye. Then a few days later it went into severe and unbearable pain . I went to ER and saw several doctors and then finally saw a Neurologist who ran an MRI and everything was clear. She put me on 1200 mg of Gabepentin a day and the pain went away. It comes back a bit from time to time with very mild shocks on my brow bone. My left eye where the pain is becomes very red and starts burning during these episodes. The Neurologist was 100% sure of what it could be.
Hello, sorry to hear of your pain but glad that the gabapentin has been helpful. If that fails I would have your neurologist try Tegretol, it may also be effective. Your condition may very well be trigeminal neuralgia, but with the pain around the eye and eye injection (redness) and burning, one must also consider SUNCT syndrome (short unilateral neuralgiform headache with conjunctival tearing), cluster headache, or even possibly Raeder syndrome (though the latter has a droopy eyelid and a small pupil associated with the pain). Trigeminal neuralgia is also a possible source for your pain. I am glad medications are effective for you.
eBrainMD Thank you - , I am making another appointment with a new Neurologist since the last one didn't seem to know 100% and the pain is still there without the Gabapentin. I will mention the other conditions to him/her.
eBrainMD She also thought it might be post herpatic neuralgia and the "cluster headaches" you mentioned above but like I said she wasn't exactly sure.
(continued): If your pain is just in the jaw ans on one side, you could still have a rhizotomy (glycerol injection into the nerve) or gamma knife radiosurgery (VERY focused radiation to the nerve) that could dampen or ameliorate the pain. The problem is that with MVD, if there ends up being no compression from a vessel at surgery, it does not work.
Yeah all my pain is on my left side and right now as I type my jaw is hurting real bad..the Dr that did my surgery said my nerve was bunched real bad w/ my veins..one of the worst he has seen..right now they r suggesting a nerve stimulator which Im kinda scared about #1 I really hate to be cut open again and #2 Im afraid it wont work and once again I will feel worse.I have stomach problems also so there's alot of meds I can't tolerate and there's meds Im not allowed to take..
Jake, sound like your pain has been a problem for a while. I am curious, where is your "ganglion" cyst? I am not sure of what you are referring to as these are typically not in the neck. Is this on the cervical spine? I am not surprised that being off the methadone and oxycontin and you are doing better. Narcotics are not typically very helpful for TGN and patients are usually actually better in a general way off of them. Have you had a neurologist or neurosurgeon evaluate you?
ive been dealing with this for 6 years or so. my cyst is behind my ear and slightly below it, exactly where i would get a lump if my sinuses were infected. this makes me wonder bc i have a cyst in my sinus cavity on the same side that takes up all of the cavity nearly.i have had neurologists tell me that the cyst couldnt be the cause but after reading into it it explains alot minus the severity of the pain but everyone is different.its confusing at this point after all of these diagnoses

My mother had the same procedure he talks about and takes tegratol daily and it has helped Her beyond belief. She described the pain like biting down on an electrical cord. When she used to have the attacks before the surgery we would take her to the er and even morphine wouldn't touch the pain. Bad condition.
I was one of the unlucky one ms who tegretol didn’t agree with me so we have to go back to the drawing board

I too had this i was ready to commit suicide. i. was doctor after docter didn't know what hell was wrog with me lost myspeech my doctor send me to a neurologist that send me to a specialist and found out what it was 2weeks later i had surgery i thank god every day i that it dose'nt ever come back

That's how i feel too. If it wasn't for my religion and son life isn't living None of the doctors knew what this was. My pain management doctor told me i couldn't take pain !!! he thought it was just a migraine. I was ready to punch him. I never ever had a pain even come close to this and i had my sons naturally. I would take that pain a hundred times instead of having this pain.

I had microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery after suffering with TN for 3.5 years. This December will be 3 years pain free. I also pray too that it never comes back. I can't go back to that pain again !!!
I am sorry to hear of your severe pain and that the MVD procedure did not work. Unfortunately, Neurontin (gabapentin) is not as effective as Tegretol (carbamazepine) in my experience. I am sorry you do not tolerate Tegretol. MVD generally is quite effective for typical TGN, but not knowing your entire history/condition, I cannot say if yours was "typical" or not. Migraines are not typical, but sounds like those came on after the surgery.
I am a female 32 yrs old (on my sons profile lol) and I had the MVD surgery in Sept of 2010 w/ very little relief in my jaw pain and ended up w/ even more severe migraines..I have been on neurotin for 5 yrs now ..I was sick for yrs before i was told by an oral surgeon that I had TN..I can NOT take tegretol as it made me VERY ill..I feel like Im losing my mind..I see numerous neurologists and neurosrgeons at OSU in Columbus,Oh.. i was diagnosed as having cluster headaches years ago. im starting to believe i have trigeminal neuralgia. it hurts in my jaw,face and behind my eye. one feature that is unique and cant be explained is a ganglion type cyst on the affected side of my neck. tegretol never worked nor the other anti seizure meds. i just took myself off methadone and oxycontin (was on it for 5 years) in order to see if i was having rebounds. i am doing better off the drugs but still not good.cant figure this out
My dr mentioned it a year ago. It subsided for a bit now it is back again and worse. I do not want to go through dental stuff and lose teeth first.

I had started tegretol and it was helping but then I broke out in a rash all over my legs from an allergic reaction to the tegretol so apparently I'm allergic to anti convulsants. So now Im taking large doses of extra strength Tylenol (I don't have constant pain, only flare ups randomly) because it numbs the pain enough to function and I'm about to start some muscle relaxers my doctor prescribed to see if it will help any until I go to my neurologist appointment in august. Hoping they can find something out

I also have an attorney fighting for my disability..I have been denied so much and Social Security told me that TN is NOT considered a disability..something know as the Suicide Disease and the Most Painful condition known to the human race is NOT a disability?? I find this VERY unfair as there are ppl who get disability for the simplest things..what can I do to help win this fight? if a vein or artery is pressing on the trigeminal nerve on both sides of the brain stem, do both sides have to operated on?...if both sides were compressed, would both sides of the face have jabbing pain?...
Hello Pei: Technically, you are correct, that bilateral (both sides) face pain "could" be coming from vascular compression. In reality, the odds of someone somehow developing compression on both sides at once is so extremely rare, that if someone has pain on both sides of the face, it is much much more likely coming from something else like MS (multiple sclerosis) or a small stroke in the brain stem. Bilateral face pain is generally not classic trigeminal neuralgia and a contra-indication for decompression surgery as the source for the pain is in question.

I am wondering if severe cervical stenosis can cause this. Although, I am getting ready to be tested for MS (MRI presented tangible evidence and I have numerous symptoms including this)... so most likely is MS.
No, the lesions were related to Migraines and the symptoms are related to migraines, silent migraines and severe foraminal stenosis in my neck region. I am due to have spine surgery in a few months. That is the first step and I will go from there.

@Ron Krikorian During the last 6 years still trying to control the pain. TENS treatment, symptoms of Fibromyalgia (but still being checked to confirm it.) , Chronic Migraines-with Botox treatment-still active, Meniere's disease and meds.

Sorry to hear of your friends and suicide. This condition has been known to drive people to desperate measures. I hope you can find relief. I do not know of any scientific articles on cannibus or THC, but if it works for you great. Having treated many patients surgically, I am still biased toward surgery for patients with typical trigeminal neuralgia.

I also becam Fentanyl,but it won´t work at me. Well one substance,called Dronabinol= synthetic THC is know for good results,but in Germany its very very difficult to get this from the doctor. 2 frieds of me killed himself,beacaus the pain was to hard to life with it.

I don't know if I have trigeminal neuralgia. Where my jaw hinges, by my ears, is where the pain first originated around 2006 is my earliest memory of this pain. The pain feels like burning needles being stabbed into my face and electric pain searing between the needles. Similar to the stabbing feeling you get when your foot falls asleep only FAR FAR more intense. The pain has now spread throughout my face and along my jaw and is set off by chewing mostly. I scratch my face to distract from the pain but the BEST SOLUTION I have personally found is pot. Marijuana. One puff, and holding it in for awhile is sometimes all it takes, but it always makes the pain go away. And very quickly. I have my medical card for this reason and I'm grateful.
I've had tn for 25yrs. but wasn't diagnosed for 10yrs. I've lost all my teeth so It makes it hard for me to eat I am ashamed to live my house cause of my affliction. does anyone know of somewhere that would help me getting Dentures

+lori hill You go to the shows for your daughter.She needs her Mom.You just wear a light scarf-or cough a bit.Sometimes people in Toronto will wear the medical face masks.No kidding.Many people have to wait about 6 months before they have implant surgery,so even people that can afford the things have to walk around without their teeth for a while.You could just make believe you are one of them.
If all your teeth are gone dentures should be cheaper than partial dentures.Not sure where you live.Still expensive ,though.
I have thought about going to check out costume places around Hallowe'en and then just adjust the teeth to how I want them to look-seeing that they would be impossible to eat with-just something cosmetic.

Im having an attack right now Ive had 3 so far the pressure behind the ear the buzzing sound.
Tegratol did work but the pressure behind my ear comes back it lasted 1 month went away came back then went away again.

Since over 14 years a Trigeminus-Neuralgia(Trigeminusneuralgie in german)ist suffering me. The Janetta surgery isn´t possbible in my case. Thatswhay i becom Timox(Oxcarbamazepin) and an anitdpressiva called Stangyl(Trimipramin) an a strong pain-killer called Levomethadon,only in german available as " L-Polamidon" methadon is knkow by people around the world. But this l_polamidon is 2 x stronger than Methadon an have no "high-making"components. Only with this medicament i can life.

I don't have it but I know beyond doubt that this is the most fucking awful pain condition there is. I have been having strange sensations in my face on and off for the last 7 years and reading about this has upped my anxiety to near intolerable levels. If I ever become seriously convinced I have it I will kill myself without a moment's hesitation. Get this dreadful condition solved. God help all those who are dealing or have dealt with it.
I only get neuralgia whenever I do a full detox.
Si mon have you found out why it happens only when you detox? doctors seem to think I have this but I only have the numbness without the pain. it seemed to come soon as I did a detox for the first time.

The trigeminal nerve and its origin are within the skull and travel to the face through foramen (holes) in the lower front of the skull. The vessels compressing the trigeminal nerve in trigeminal neuralgia are similarly within the skull. I do not know of any chiropractic methods that can treat conditions within the skull. However, if this system of care helps patients manage the pain, it may be beneficial, but it would not remove the cause of the problem.
eBrainMD I could refer you to a Doctor of Chiropractic medicine that may have the knowledge to manage the pain and possibly alleviate the problem.

Dave, I am glad to hear she got it treated. The surgery is really quite effective and good to get the word out. Curious, who did her surgery?
eBrainMD insert I was mistaken about what procedure she had that worked. It wasn't the sponge insertion surgery that worked. She did have that one but it didn't help. The procedure that dis work was similar to the gamma knife procedure. The neurologists that performed it is Dr. Hawk. He is based out of Wilson Memorial hospital in upstate NY.
