When you used the drill press, what did you regret the most?
The drill press table was so uncomfortable for me.
Not only the lifting and lowering handles, but also the table fixing handles all look the same. They're thin metal rods, and they're left on both sides so that they don't fall out. My hands hurt and it was very uncomfortable.
So I tried several times to create a different type of table.
In order to secure the components well, I have laid the track and used a track fixing clamp, and attached a dust collection system.
But there are still many people who use it as it is, and this time, I made a system where the table moves in two directions: the X-axis and the Y-axis. I've always envied CNC and milling machines, but I wanted to show you that you can make it work with a drill press to some extent.
I think you'll be able to feel the charm if you see me using it.
I hope you enjoy watching the video.
Thank you.

That's a clever idea. Perfect for the occasional use I would need such a milling type setup. Thanks for sharing your work and innovation
Although it is different from a real milling machine in terms of strength, it is satisfactory enough for the small woodworking work I do. thank you!
Thank you so much!!!
Great video in all respects. Please could you advise where you obtained the small blue lifters? They would be useful for many applications.
Thank you for those kind words! You can find it by searching for lift table on online stores such as Amazon or Ali.
Good job
Well, don't forget that drill chuck's made to bear vertical force, NOT a horizontal one !
This is a meaningful point. Of course, I also considered it. I made a milling machine prototype with a working depth of about 1mm on softwood. Do not use it to the extent that it puts a strain on the bearing or spindle. Of course, its main use is drilling. I have no intention of making a larger drill press with a cast iron body. That's because there is already a wonderful machine called a milling machine. I don't think you really understand the concept of my channel yet. I am primarily a person who does a priori experiments and tests. Please understand this as a new attempt. I hope that my attempt will be a small hint for those who want to create works with a similar concept. I think your expert comments will be of great help. thank you!
@Kynosys_ Hi pal ! First of all, I appreciated your reply, indeed.
Secondly, you didn't answer in a supponent way, again appreciated.
Mine was, being a mechanic, a mere technical consideration as you quickly understood.
I stumbled, by chance, on this vid.
After that, I, of course, went to your channel. Wow ! You're doing well 👍
I congratulated you on the sanding "go-and-back" machine, as well.
I'm going to subscribe to your channel.

My (basic) understanding is that a drill press is not designed to handle sideways forces and something in the chuck/drill may prematurly break/wear if you do this with it very much. If something were to go wrong at the wrong time, espcially if a router bit is in it at that moment, it could be very dangerous. Was that a concern at all? Do you know if this drill press's electric motor changes the susptability to this problem at all?
What you are saying is very relevant and accurate.
The drill press is designed to cope with normal force. Side machining is an operation implemented in fairly large machines with cast bodies. It is a work made to perform very small and simple work on a small drill press. Not used for large pieces. Think of it as an a priori experiment. thank you
just take off micros passes instead and its fine its nearly a 1 horsepower motor and the bearings should cope with lateral forces in wood easily with 1mm
passes.
You are right. Milling machines have different bearing systems, which are suited to handle lateral forces. Normal drilling systems are not designed for lateral forces, and any lateral force will risk degradation of functionality and safety at unknown amounts.
👍
Thanks!!!

A great video but this is a drill and not a milling machine. The drill is ment to go down and not sideways. will not the bearings in the drill be bad after some time ?

I'm impressed but why not go one step further and turn it into a cnc mill, it would be fairly easy to sort out a control for Z with a stepper and stick 2 more on X and Y , pop a cheap 25 euro grbl controller on it and use free software and you end up with a full automated cnc....Well done
Thank you for your kind words. I still don't have the skills to run CNC software. However, because I enjoy learning, I would like to make the 3-axis drive piece you mentioned someday. I will try harder.

Thanks for sharing video. Interesting project
It's not a sturdy structure, but I wanted to show you the basic structure of a milling machine. Thank you for watching.

Where are the limit switches? You don't want to accidentally destroy all that hard work.
You watch the video carefully, and you make the right point.
It's a kind of prototype. The travel distance of the X and Y axes of the stage is very short. The processing area is marked on the upper plate. And I work within that limit anyway. Even though the motor is for 12v, and it seems too complicated, I didn't use a limit switch. thank you

That's an interesting project. I'm surprised the PD40 can take the lateral forces when the bearing would not have been design to take such forces.
In fact, typical drill presses are designed to withstand vertical drag. A product called PBD40, moreover, doesn't have that strong frame. I only use lateral movement when machining very soft wood and at very shallow depths. I would appreciate it if you could understand that this is a prototype work that changed a drill press into a milling machine. Thank you for your thoughtful words.

I have this drill press, how do you control the depth of the cut ?
You have a Bosch PBD40? In the upper left corner, there is a vertical pillar that moves freely. There is a clamp on the side that holds it in place. With the clamp released, lower the drill press with the handle to the desired position and secure the clamp. thank you!
Ah yeah realise that just wondered if you had found away to use the depth display 😊

Fake. The base plate is deforming under weight of drill press, the chuck wobbles on stock bearings like crazy, the whole machine has play on the tube itself.
You must have watched the movie Inception very impressively. My top will fall down.
