Finding Auwo: reacting to the first photo of this species!

- The moment Doka and I (Jordan Boersma) realized we had the first ever photos of the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon, known locally as Auwo, on our very last day of searching on Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea.
This species had not been documented since the 1800s and had never been photographed. We spent a month searching for this critically endangered and, at the time, potentially extinct species, and never saw the bird ourselves. Seeing photos of this elusive, almost mythical, bird walking past our camera was the most surreal and fulfilling experience we could have ever imagined.
Jason Gregg, Doka Nason, Eli Malesa, John Mittermeier, Serena Ketaloya, and Bulisa Iova were core members of the expedition team. We had the support of countless Fergusson Is. locals whose immense knowledge of birds led to this triumphant moment.
The expedition was supported by American Bird Conservancy and the Search for Lost Birds, a collaboration between BirdLife International, American Bird Conservancy and Re:wild. The Search for Lost Birds identified the pheasant-pigeon for an expedition after a global review revealed it was one of a few bird species that have been lost to science for more than a century.

Props on the camera man for revealing it in the best way possible to one of the few people that would appreciate it just as much as himself. Gave me a goooooood feeling, big congrats.
He wanted someone to verify what he was seeing instead of telling them what he saw.

Not a cameraman, he's the PI
Funny, because they sold this land to a logging company shortly afterwards. Bye bye birds !
I have no real personal interest in birds, but seeing the instant reaction of this man really made my day, I've watched it half a dozen times by now.
Congratulations to you and your team!

It's absolutely the most wholesome feeling, seeing somebody so happy about all their hard work paying off.
As a fellow conservationist i am so damn happy for you. Thank you for sharing this pure joy with us.
How can I become a conservationist?
@@pedroroque829 it's super easy friend. It can be as simple as wrighting down observations of nature around you or pulling weeds from protected/threatened areas. Getting out there will also surely get people joining you.
What part of the world are you in? Ill also try for a bit more specific advice.

@@ssadfadsfad well that's terrible news. For my own selfish reasons I don't want to believe you but it just rings so true.
It must've been so hard to be casual like "hey man, take a look at this" when you KNEW the guy was about to have a meltdown of pure joy and disbelief.
The reaction is... man, just heartwarming. Congratulations to you all!
Everything was instinctive in that moment. It's all a blur, but thankfully Doka delivered the most memorable reaction I could ever have hoped for!
I am overwhelmed by the response to Doka's reaction to our surreal finding!
Many are requesting the trail cam photo we are responding to- the first ever photo of the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon- which you can see here: mobile.twitter.com/Jordan_Boersma/status/1593268835980902400

Thanks so much for watching and stay tuned for more Doka and the dramatic search for the Auwo!
Such unbridled, genuine joy is not something you see too often, and such a beautiful bird on top of it all too. I'll keep coming back to this when I need a cheer-me-up for a long time!

Not gonna lie that almost made me cry, awesome to see that much joy in a dude
Congratulations! I hope you guys succeed in conserving this beautiful species! It’s my favorite out of the four Pheasant Pigeons.
Yep totally been seen once in 140 years im sure they will get right on saving it .. cause you know logic im sure they know exactly where everyone is now
@@madaneoulix1312 you cant just at least respect the effort they are putting into their conservation project?

@@madaneoulix1312 It's been seen far more than once. After this moment, they confirmed one on a second camera-trap a few km away, and they have several locals who have seen them numerous times and were able to tell them the exact places where. So they actually have a pretty strong idea of the areas they would need to conserve in order to preserve the species.
Man the happiness is so contagious everyone I've shown this to has smiled. You guys are awesome
I love when you see people excited for thing they’re passionate about

You should seriously create a CZcams short of Doka's reaction. Have seen it several times and it never fails to make me smile. That is pure joy. A good cure for the holiday blues.
This is such a beautiful video, the emotion and passion is priceless. This video has made my day :)
A while ago when this video originally came out, I told my wife this was my dream for her, she is into conservation and loves trail and trap cameras, I told her that I wanted to see one day a video like this, where she sees something in a trap cam that gets her this excited
She thought it was the best thing she had ever heard, and she was full of love for me because no one had ever wished her something like that, it sounded like I really nailed it and it was what she had wanted all her life.
Sadly she passed away a week ago and was never able to find something like this.
She set camera traps in Peru, Colombia, Thailand, Belize, Borneo, Namibia and South Africa, she did more than most people will ever get to, but she died too young and will never be able to fulfill her dream of finding a species considered extinct or saving a species from extinction.
I will always remember the moment we watched this video together.
It was the one of her happiest moments, and for sure the most proud of herself moment ever.
Thank you
Rarely do you get to see pure joy like this. That was awesome!
I keep watching this and I am almost In tears at the reaction of the guide and local man on the ground ,who made this happen.A man after my own heart in the knowledge and respect of his lands.Keep on the the good work brother.

why not put the photo in the vid?
because birds are fake
That would make too much sense.
"I can't believe my eyes! When people see this... unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it! It's beyond description."
if you were really interested in seeing the bird you would just google and look at it
Well he made a comment about someone looking through the photos as well so maybe they wanted to make this announcement but didnt want the photo up yet. That or, more likely, they were just really excited and threw this up real quick to make it known.
Pure joy seeing so much happiness

Congratulations to you as well!!
I am sitting here doing my night shift and this guy got me hyped up too for no apparent reason.
What an incredible moment.
Incredible! This is really super awesome! Hope for more discoveries of bird species, and other fauna. Also any reports from the local people seeing dwarf or small land dwelling or terrestrial crocodiles in New Guinea? I remember hearing reports in the past of tree climbing crocodiles. There a possibility that a surviving mekosuchus or relative could still survive today in New Guinea and unexplored Islands in the South Pacific, Solomon Islands, and being ecologically very similar to monitor lizards.
WOW!!! CONGRATS!!
