Adventures from bird field studies in New Guinea and beyond (formerly 'Wild Birds of New Guiena') . Stay tuned for full video series showing our journey to finding Auwo (the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon), a species undocumented by scientists since the 1800s!
UNCUT: shock at seeing first photo of Auwo!
This is the uncut version of our reaction to the photo that confirmed the existence of the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon- known locally as Auwo- a species with no scientific documentation since the 1800s. There were no previous photos of this species, but the image on the tiny trail camera LCD screen unmistakably matched illustrations of this elusive species.
Doka and I were in disbelief that our mission finally succeeded on the last day of our expedition. This was only possible thanks to our local partners, who have immense natural history knowledge of the birds in their forest, and guided us to the area where we set the camera.

We were lost for several hours having followed the wrong river and were running out of food at the end of our trip. Eli foundsan edible palm to fuel our trek back to camp. The same day- the last full day of our expedition - one of our trail cameras captured the first photo of the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon (Auwo), a species lost to science since the 1800s.

Doka found a Curl-crested Manucode nest, a Bird-of-Paradise native to just a few islands off the eastern coast of Papua New Guinea. Watch him climb a neighboring tree to set a trail camera and see the resulting footage! Subscribe to this channel to see more videos from the expedition that captured the first ever footage of the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon (Auwo).

The Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon, known locally as Auwo, had been lost to science since the 1800s. We worked with local partners on Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea to provide the first ever photo (see channel thumbnail, credit: Doka Nason) and video (shown here, credit: Jason Gregg) of this critically endangered species. The moment Doka and I (Jordan Boersma) realized we had the first ever photos of the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon, known locally as Auwo, on our very last day of searching on Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea. This species had not been documented since the 1800s and had never been photographed. We spent a month searching for this critically endangered and, at the time, potentially extinct specie...

hihihi
He didn’t say owl. He said Auwo, if anyone was wondering.
The bird is actually called an auwo by the locals of the region, it’s actual name is the black naped pheasant pigeon, and it has been though to be extinct because it was last seen in the 1800s. The original video can be found on the channel auwo and will give a much better explanation in the description than I can.
Thats amazing
For those who don't know: They took the first photograph/video of The black-naped pheasant-pigeon (Locally known as the Auwo in Papua New-Guinea). This bird was thought to be extinct as it hadn’t been seen since 1882.

♥️
hey any new updates on the longer video?
he didn’t discover a new bird species, it was a team of conservationists who were searching for a never before photographed critically endangered bird species that we didn’t even know wether or not was actually extinct, they spent over a month in the forest waiting and searching for this bird named Auwo, and they finally found it, and were the first people to get it on footage.
“holy shit we did it” and goes for a high five, so beautiful
That island is native to birds.. So the fact he didn’t even know himself what bird that is just confirmed himself he knew it was the real deal !
They found a Auwo. It’s a black-naped Pheasant pigeon. It hasn’t been seen for over 140 years. Was found in Papua New Guinea in 2022. “Not a Owl”
