The Last Kauai Ō'Ō bird was singing a mate call, The song sometimes pauses because the lines sung there were for the Female bird. But little did he know he'd be singing the song Half-Assed.

I'm from Kauai so I know this story since I was little, the scientist sadly also passed when hew was hiking alone in a mountain in the big island and fell, happened in 2007 same year I was born.
Since he was a famous person here he's used as a cautionary tale not to hike alone specially in the mountains RIP

A big reason for their extinction is not deforestation, but the introduction of invasive species to the island. This is a perfect example of how if you don’t control an invasive species population any chance you get, the balance of nature can be thrown off and native species will go extinct. The invasive species that made them go extinct caused them to starve. These invasive animals were rats, boars, and mosquitoes.

Cloning is still possible with samples from a museum. With CRISPR technology you can construct missing parts so you don't necessarily need closely related species. Texas based company Colossal Biosciences for example is working at the deextinction of several species. If the local population of Hawaii and the US administration can work together with Colossal, there might be an opportunity to bring back not only the Kauai O'O but many other local species extincted in the last two centuries and reconstruct the ecosystem...
