That's how I learned to sing it, at school from Hymns Ancient and Modern. Only later did I discover that Haydn wrote the tune, and that it also had words for the National Anthems of Germany and Austria.
This hymn also uses the original music of the historical national anthem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and now the current national anthem of Germany with music by Johann Haydn and lyrics by August Heinrich Hoffman von Fallersleben since 1922. Only the third stanza is used as the official lyrics of the national anthem of West Germany from 1949 to 1990, then a reunified Germany since 1990.

For sheer compositional skill I don't think there's anything to beat Haydn's tune used as the German national anthem - but when it comes to performance, the Germans generally do it in a slow, heavy, unmusical fashion. It is left to the English with their hymn version (Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken) to give it the tight, well-phrased, shapely performance it deserves . . .

If you go to a Church that still uses hymns you will probably hear it sung as it has been sung for over ~170 years. As for myself I have never heard it sung anywhere except short chorus in movies.

@@losabias4723 I mean no idea if I’m related to Haydn but I’m related to John Newton, the one who wrote the lyrics and the same person who wrote ‘Amazing Grace’. I’m also related to the royalty of the Habsburgs, Romanovs, Swedish, English, Scottish, Sardinian, French, Spanish and Russian houses. This is probably because most of the royal houses across Europe were related to the Merovingian dynasty, as am I. Although, I’m quite positive that there’s lots of descendants of these said dynasties so that’s not saying too much.

I do wonder whether the words of this hymn (or whichever verses of this hymn were sung on that occasion) made any impression on him. But either way, alas, he was not converted (to real Christianity that is, as opposed to e.g. the fake "Positive Christianity" spoken of in point 24 of the National Socialist Program).

If you go to a Church that still uses hymns you will probably hear it sung as it has been sung for over ~170 years. As for myself I have never heard it sung anywhere except short chorus in movies.

@@losabias4723 I mean no idea if I’m related to Haydn but I’m related to John Newton, the one who wrote the lyrics and the same person who wrote ‘Amazing Grace’. I’m also related to the royalty of the Habsburgs, Romanovs, Swedish, English, Scottish, Sardinian, French, Spanish and Russian houses. This is probably because most of the royal houses across Europe were related to the Merovingian dynasty, as am I. Although, I’m quite positive that there’s lots of descendants of these said dynasties so that’s not saying too much.
