      hey bud, i got a question i have the same year engine but it's a 15hp 4stroke..it starts, idle's good for 10secs then get rough idle and shuts off, i pump primer bulb a few times. and it will restart right up...and do the samething. sometimes it will let me rev it up and sometimes it won't, vary boggie. any suggestion on what it could be?

  • @BobWiersema
    @BobWiersema Před 6 měsíci +3

    My vote is plugged or restricted exhaust. It has all the symptoms. Won't idle or make power. Even with a completely plugged exhaust a engine will still test with good compression. Technicality you could remove the exhaust valve rockers and a engine will still have good compression.

    One of the piston tops looks washed. That tells me the rings are bad on that piston. That's all I saw. Great stuff....thanks for sharing

    9.9 4 stroke - the right size and so many people are not interested in mixing gas and oil. I know it’s easy, but it’s just another thing to remember.

    They are likely so quick to sell as they're popular as trolling motors on fishing boats. Or backup kickers etc on big water

    Good to know they don’t have crank and main bearings. I’ve got one that has a wicked knock and I just found a doner I’m looking to pick up. These engines don’t like to start but they are incredible on gas.

  • @richt8297
    @richt8297 Před 6 měsíci +1

    The tops of the pistons have carbon build up all the way around so that tells me you don’t have ring wash. You know if you have bad rings when the edge of the pistons are clean from the oil getting into the combustion chamber and cleaning off the edge of the piston.

    I have no idea what’s wrong! But then again I can barely run a hammer. Lol. But I love these videos I’ve already learned a lot. The only thing is how do you keep up with all those little parts. For me it just like looks I would never remember where they. But anyway keep these coming. I love watching you and the strip down of a motor and put it back together!

    Check Valve Lash tight valves will limit the draw on carb

    • @mjodr
      @mjodr Před 6 měsíci

      After watching the whole video my only guess is something with the valves. And it's the only thing he didn't talk about/show him checking. I think I've owned more 2 strokes than 4 strokes, but I can distinctly remember adjusting valves often on all my 4 strokes. XR650R made it easy, hardest might have been on my Ninja 250, but they all needed it eventually. When I am diagnosing a 4 stroke valves are always on my mind now.

      @randy1ization Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@mjodr I would bet that in the service info on those motors, it recommends check valve lash at x amount of run hours,, all of them likely need adjusting and would start 1st pull when warm..

    Did you check the valve adjustment and do a leak down test to make sure you don’t have a leaking valve ? Another thing is a smoke test to see if you have a vacuum leak.

    • @BrandonsGarage

      No, my leak down tester doesn't fit into the spark plug cavity. But I too was suspecting valves.

    at least here in florida anything less than 10hp does not require a boating license. 9.9 cowls and sticker kits also go for big money :)

      @randy1ization Před 4 měsíci

      yes I want to get into flipping outboards too, but Texas is hard to do it in.,., they want damned titles for everything,, you cant even use a boat with just an electric trolling mot without registration.., for the older small outboards, they change hands so many times its hard to find original owners or paperwork, and nobody wants to buy a motor without a title, only maybe for parts.. it sucks.

    Why didn’t you drop the intake? Oring seals on the intake. Much easier to get to the carb nut.

    I have a 84 johnson 9.9 i revived using your vids and my mechanic skills. Runs great now. Only thing is after i ran it and put it in the garage a few days later i noticed thick black goopy about 3 inch diameter puddle coming from prop area. The oil is perfect and it was also perfect when i got it but i put in new anyway. Still oil looks new and hasnt seemed to go down. Could you give me some direction? Is it just old build up. Or should i pull the prop and get new o rings or the whole carrier? Theres no play anywhere not even a scratch on the bottom fin. It came with the original OMC card and receipts. He kept it top notch. It was basically a good carb clean. Any HELP be much appreciated as im a loyal watcher and commenter and like your vids and your work.

    Hi Brandon this is Peter from Finland and I have an evinrude 15 hp but it is the same as your engine.
    The problem is that it pulls the starter rope out of my hand when I want to start and the ignition is too early.
    Have researched everything several times to no avail. I have read that the ignition module must have automatic setting. That at 0 rpm the ignition should be 5 * atd and at 1000 rpm 10 * btd but it is constantly 30 * btd checked with a stroboscope lamp. Haven't figured out what's wrong and have given up on that engine. It was my first 4 soke engine but maybe the last. Very disappointed that it could not be repaired.

    Brandon, I just bought a 1996 16' MonArk bass boat, it will handle up to 60hp. Do you have a recommendation for a decent motor, I don't need 60 hp, but more than the 9.9hp merc that came with it.

      Once the carb bowl is full, it should still be able to idle and run until it's out of gas; and the hose bulb works as a manual fuel pump. So not the fuel pump.
