In the days before I had the Internet for research, I would go to my local library and trawl through rolls of microfiche featuring newspapers of bygone years. Here I would spend hours unraveling long forgotten cases.
Nowadays a lot of these microfiche have been digitised, and so with the aid of modern technology I will hark back to my youth and investigate a vintage Australian crime case from the 1930s.
Three young women were murdered in a park only one minute from where I used to live - and only now do their ghosts whisper a tragic tale for me to tell....

I truly only wish the best for everyone but it would be interesting to see how these same people would think after everything they know and own is taken away from them and food still needs to be put on a park bench for kids to eat. Oh yeah where do you get the money to feed them now??
It's not the best analogy but I think it gets my point across.

I had already watched it when you first put it in years ago but it was well worth going back to rewatch your two part video on the chateau you visited and luckily i saw the post for this video because as usual CZcams hadn’t put it in any of my feed even though I’ve been a long time subscriber to your channel. Love looking at the old newspapers. It brings you right back to the time when it happened. At the beginning, a lot was made of the knotting technique, but it doesn't seem to have come up at trial. I would have thought that showing that the murderer knew about advanced knots and was able to tie them himself would have been an important link.

It's rather interesting to see how each one gets presented. To the story:: for me too many loop holes, too many contradictions in people's interviews. Craig looks the likely suspect but whose to say he is the one. Very confusing like a few others I've seen. Small world! My family lived on Rainbow St Randwick. My grandmother would take us to the picture theater there before traveling down to Coogee for a swim. There was also a huge park with a hill on one side and a place nick-named 'The Spot' due to a circular motif on a shop facade-roof. I think it was a chemist shop.

Fascinating albeit morbid history. I love crime stories and I would bet it was a serial killer. If the stories weren’t prominently featured on front page newspapers then the idea of a copycat or framing to look like the original killing is pretty far-fetched. Identical in how they were killed an found… etc. even the 25 years span is not incomprehensible. The man may have traveled around a lot. May be he killed in other places and back then there would have been really no way of linking crimes.

@@ObsoleteOddity Actually, the Everleigh Street environs of Redfern were completely refurbished in the late 1980s as a new comfortable housing estate for the indigenous community, within three years, most of the places were so severely damaged again as to be unlivable and many were demolished. I haven't really seen what has become of that area of Redfern since the mid 1990s, however there's been a lot of redevelopment elsewhere in Redfern and it has become more cosmopolitan and less of a slum.
It's a shame that women who used to walk the streets and ply their trade for survival have never been looked upon more kindly. Back when these women were doing this, women were often not welcome in the mainstream workforce and they might not have been able to find a man to marry them after the death toll of the First World War thinning out the numbers of available men and some of these women might not have had fathers who didn't die or become broken or maimed beyond the ability to work and support them, so there weren't a variety of options. Hopefully the image of those in this industry will improve over time as more people find acquaintances in the industry and realise that it's almost always the last resort after all other options for lucrative work have failed, for reasons too numerous to mention. I tend to think of the people in the industry as 'intimate pleasure technicians' (deserving of respect for the risks involved in the job), rather than the derogatory P word 😊

Hi 👋🏻 Oddie Beau, Odette & fur babies! I don’t know exactly what it is, but, without having ever used it myself in life, I have had a fascination with the whole microfiche thing. That easier scrolling through digitized photos of older, actually published newspapers and articles without the fear of ruining their preservation. Seeing accounts that were at the time of the incidents in many cases, though some might be from later years, revisiting. I don’t even mind that it’s newspaper photos that aren’t as lively as regular photographs. They have their own unique charm & you clearly can still animate them to a degree. Not sure why they are so satisfying to me, but it’s akin to being an archeologist that gets the artifact reward and knowledge without the messiness and tedium of an actual dig. Cataloguing has its own tedium, which is just fine. This is like that in that, it’s a more convenient search that still requires a lot of searching though not nearly as bad as it would be if you had to pour over actual old papers from different collections. The rabbit holes 🕳 🐇 are real, though, as one search begets so many others and different tidbits leading to still more. I happily jump down them all with you!
As for this case, specifically, I’m rather flummoxed. If the cases were so similar within such short time, I find the thought of a copycat murderer to be improbable. And how crazy would it be if it was a different killer(s) but the methods and similar specialized (though not unique) knots being present. It’s also a bit weird that the fellow admitted somewhat readily to the one killing (though spinning it as defensive) but vehemently denied the other, similar case. I know some lie about crimes, but it was curious. My thoughts on why are maybe because she was from a more prominent family and he didn’t want to be on the hook for what would be perceived as a “worse” crime to society and authorities (the reality being all lives are equal) plus/or the circumstances didn’t allow for him to have some kind of defensive excuse & maybe he thought he could wriggle more easily out of the one, but not the other, and never at all, if proven to be serial murders. Also, the account of the girl clinging to life when found (though another report just said she was found dead with no mention of last words) where she whispered Frank, twice, & it was never found who she meant or why. It is all confusing and casts some doubt. He, of course, could have told her a false name upon meeting, but the whole thing is mysterious. How I wish such old evidence could’ve been preserved in such a condition as to be put to DNA testing today! I want to KNOW so badly & also for family, generations later to have closure. Thank you, Oddie, for expanding the formats you present and always doing the stories justice.
I adore the watercolor! 😍 It gives off such a happy warm vibe! You can feel the happiness you had there in that environment. I’m sorry the parting had to happen and that the Lebanese family has passed on, but you gave them a piece of your spirit in that painting and they cherished it in their lives. Whenever I hear about average Lebanese people (meaning not political or famous, except maybe the guy who played Klinger on M.A.S.H.), they always have been wonderful, kind stories & it makes me very curious about their homeland and history/culture. I always love seeing your art & other personal adventures, places you’ve been. Thank you for sharing with us all.

@@emeraldblue5291 Yes, I was aware of this regarding Jamie Farr. His family was still Lebanese. They don’t have to be straight outta Lebanon, though I’m sure he probably wasn’t as fully immersed in his culture, being born here, as if he’d have been growing up there in the home country. My only point in mentioning him was that I had said average, non political, non famous families/individuals, but then I remembered that I wanted to include the 1 famous Lebanese descended person I did know about. 😁 He seemed like a generally nice fellow, as well. The very few interviews I had seen where he made references to things that were Lebanese, be it food or have you, were always interesting to me. I also remember him talking about Toledo, though it’s been a very long time since I saw those snippets of interviews. 👍🏻
