Were it that simple, I would, of course, but only real Irish people have that all-important touch of the Blarney that those of us across the water can merely dream of. I visited your country once for a turn on ‘The Late, Late Show’. They all speak like you! It was a treat.
But we do have something in common. We love the same cars. My other car is a DS5 Hybrid which I know you waxed lyrical over, especially the interior. It has quite a few quirks that half a year’s driving have revealed, but I forgive it everything for its sheer panache.
As for the 640d, any quirks I’ve noticed in my four days’ ownership have been the car knowing best and my not having read the manual with sufficient rigour. In Frozen Bronze, I have to say it’s an utterly sybaritic, svelte and slightly menacing stealth bomber on 20 inch alloys. It has the presence to hold my three 12 year-old sons in silent awe.
I watched your reviews after buying the cars and found you were giving voice to my precise sentiments. Do tell me when you next fall in love with one of your subjects...

Good to know that ownership is living up to the review, a week with a car makes it hard to test for the long term effects but I still rank the 640d as an all time favourite
Bob Flavin Much as I love my sons, cheek by jowl with three near-teenagers in a camper van isn't my idea of joy so the VW's out. Their prep school grounds are full of Range Rovers whose off-road capabilities are tested by mums in jodhpurs bumping them off the drives and across immaculate lawns, so they're out, too. I'll stick with the Gran Coup and the DS5...

Great review ! I usually only watch the really good ones like Motortrend and Chris Harris, but you mate have definitely made it to the top of my list ! I just love a reviewer who reviews with his feelings, to me how a car makes you feel and how it makes you desire it is much more important than objective facts. Objective reviewers are a dime a dozen on CZcams, so please keep doing what you're doing !

M5 is fantastic but hard to live with, you'll be in every petrol station you pass; no matter how economical you think it is you'll never keep your foot off the pedal. The 640d on the other hand is just about the same amount of fun but will do over 1000kms to a tank of fuel.
Another great real world review ...nice car...my f31 330d m sport tourer has a similar spec.

The 640d is the best car BMW make at the moment, it might be the best car they've ever made. You won't regret a single moment behind the wheel of the car plus you'll get some people in the back without cutting their legs off at the knee. You'll be spending a lot of time in the petrol station with a 650 but if you can afford it that won't matter, I'd still have the 640d GC over any car on the road today.

Unfortunately BMW didn't give me access to the M5 while it was here, it's gone now but I'm talking to BMW UK to see if I might go there and have a test.

Great video. This guy is cool. I’m looking at getting a 2016 6 series m sport . Would you advise a 2dr or 4dr. I’ve no kids just me and the girlfriend so I won’t encounter any problems with no room in the back seats. 2 dr is a few grand cheaper. If you took the back seat issue out of the equation which would you go for and why ?
Bob like your review on the BMW 640 d Gran Coupe. I've always been a Jaguar driver and my current motor the Xf diesel s is no slouch. I saw a 640 on the road and I agree with your comments... the looks stop traffic. I had to pop down to my local BMW dealer and test drive and now I'm thinking of buying one. Are there any big issues I should be considering...apart from the price?

Don't forget the camera is always going to shake in the car, it's the weight of the camera plus the mounting angle. I promise the car doesn't ride like it seems, it's very smooth really.

How does it compare to the other "green" luxury GT you tested, the GS450h F-Sport? hybrid vs diesel? GS vs 4 door 6 series? Lexus interior vs BMW interior? Handling vs handling?

I see. I would choose the A7 mainly because it ticks all the boxes for me. Just wish we had the 3.0 bi-turbo TDI offered over here in the states.
I always reply (I spend most of my morning going through them) as it gets busier it's become a lot of work but hey ho that's why I'm still doing after 2 years!

I've never been a fan of BMW, but after seeing Bob's review of the Gran Coupe a while ago I became converted. I have the brochure now, and it's a great looking car, so I'm saving my pennies as we speak. There are a couple of nearly new ones on eBay for around £50K, so give it another few years and they'll get down to my budget.

Unfortunately not. I opted for a low mileage E-Class instead, but it was a very disappointing ride on pot-holed UK roads and so I didn't keep it long.
Indeed it is, it's so big BMW put cameras on it so you can see where it is while you park.

Yes, it's a tuned sound that comes from the engine but it's piped through the speakers. Audi put a speaker in the exhaust system of the bi-turbo, even Peugeot piped the sound of the RCZ through a special speaker in the dash...weird huh
So which would you rather own? A7, CLS, or this?

Up until recently, the defining characteristic of a coupe, was that it had two doors.
I am seriously considering buying one that’s appeared at my local garage, one of my concerns is the size of the car, is it difficult to live with for everyday use, parking etc...?
It's no bigger than other cars in this segment.
They are very usable, plenty of room for two adults in the back and they'll be comfy for a long drive. I carried 3 big burly Polish lads to Dublin in it and they didn't want to get out.
No, the test car didn't have that option fitted and I don't think it needs it. It can make the steering very sharp and it doesn't help when parking or anything. So unless it's a very cheap option (which it isn't) I wouldn't bother.
How do you make out there's terrible paintwork?
It's piped through, it's not a CD or fake sound, it just gets amplified by the speakers. They are all at it now, Audi put a speaker in the exhaust system; sounds brilliant though

The 640d and A7 are neck and neck, the BMW edged on the noise and driving madness. The CLS is no where to be seen I'm afraid, it has no answers to the other two

of course you can get a vw polo or some peugeots for a lot less money. but if you have to cover very big distances would you choose them? probably not... the 640d is a grand tourer with low consumption, and it has done its job perfectly :)

Since bmw are making great Diesel engines they've decided to make M versions which are badged M50D,which are available on the x5,x6 and 5 series.please make a review on one of them vehicles cause they have more power than the 40D engine and puts out great figures of combined fuel consumption.
This is a great question but it's easy to answer. 640d, no other diesel car comes near. The others are good but BMW just has that "special" feeling that's missing from the rest.
This one is even preti then current new ugly 6 gc. Great job Bob!!! Brilliant car!
Hmm I would take the E60 535d if I was doing any sort of millage. It's bags of fun and will leave supercars wondering what just overtook them. The M5 will always top a list but you'll need a big bank balance for everything, even the tyres will make you cry. The 645i, great engine but the ride never lived up to the promise, it's hard and on Irish roads you'll need new shocks soon after getting the car.
Am buying 650i tomorrow :)

You sir, are..as they say where I am presently located, a " sin vergüenza". I had fully decided on a 650i coupe until I saw your excellent video on a 640d coupe and I was persuaded that the 640d was the right one for me. And now I find you here waxing lyrically about a four door 640d. Is there no end to your duplicity? And what am I to do now as I agree with you that this is a superior vehicle to the coupe? The 650i coupe fulfilled all my ideals but this just makes so much more sense.
Wish BMW would bring the diesel version to the U.S. Torque of the V8 model but without the abysmal mpg. Oh well.

BMW have made me excited about the noise a diesel engine makes, I don't mind a bit of artificial if it adds to the overall experience and it does. Get used to it, they are all at it now
It's a fantastic car with a gobsmacking engine,but Its still difficult to choose the 640d over the m5 cause it here roughly the same money.
I'll tell you that soon because I have the Lexus for a full test in a few weeks, I've only had a quick drive in the Lexus.

That would be nice, it needs another camera and mount though...need more money for that!
I'd go for the 530D and look for a M-sport pack as the alloys look cooler and the interior gets some nice sport touches. I doubt the 535 would be much faster. You want deep pockets to pay for M5 services and a cheap petrol station and the 645 was always a bit for a cigar-lounge car.
