Yall forgot about Confederate spy and southern socialite Rose Greenhow and Teddy Roosevelt’s wild daughter Alice. Also what about historical women OUTSIDE the US and Europe
Josephine Baker, Zheng Yi Sao, Hattie McDaniel, Anna May Wong, Fue, Andrée de Jongh, Rosalind Franklin, and Susan La Flesche Picotte.
Sounds more like they were just living their best lives.
Yes - I'm not sure how they're defining "scandalous" here.
Oh, a lot of them were indeed scandalous in their time. If nothing else, just by the fact they had or were trying to live their own life.
They may have lived their own lives but they were considered scandalous for the time period. Keep in mind, society back then was not like ours today
@@elisarosario975 I did and I have.
@@roguejester4986 I know. I'm just saying times were different back then. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't admire these wonderful women because they've truly made an impact one way or another.
Bettie Page was a freaking legend, Enough said.
Exactly she's the queen of the pin-ups
I've heard of Bettie Page, Georgiana Cavendish, Collette, Tallulah Bankhead, Mary Wollstonecraft, Evelyn Nesbit, Agrippina, Hypatia, Isadora Duncan, Lady Godiva, and Eleanor of Aquitaine. You guys really need to find more obscure figures if you're going to tout them as people we've 'never heard of'. Honestly, I feel like the writers' room for MsMojo consists of "what Keira Knightley movies can we build a top 10 list around?"
Marlene Dietrich's name isn't pronounced "marleen", but rather "marlayna".
I’ve heard of nearly all of them and clearly I’m far from alone in that. Their headline writer got this one way wrong!
So have I. But I'm thinking that my 18yo and 14yo haven't. I think it's great if they found out :) But for those of us that are over 20-25yo this isn't new...
Dietrich liked women
Yeah, it’s definitely a case of a list of women you’ve never heard of that were really famous in their own time and many of whom have had films made about them, books written about them or have featured heavily in films or books about close family members who were a little more famous…oh and that anyone who has an interest in has in fact heard of them.
I thought I was going to see Nell Gwyn on the list!! Alas, such is the plight of Female Comedians...Remembered only for a time😢 🍊🍊🍊
How about the pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read? Or Empress Theodora? Or Jeanna Baret?
Or Zheng Shi?
Theodora was a religious fanatic.
Never heard of?
Great video filled with amazing women but... the title seems a bit off. These ladies are legends in history. This countdown literally shows clips of movies made about many of them. They are definitely known (though they should be even more recognized in my opinion).
Also, Hypatia deserved to be more than just an honorable mention.
There are so many women I can think of not in this list although some wouldn't be considered scandalous...Marlene Dietrich, Lupe Valdez, Lizzie Borden, Bathsheba Spooner, Mata Hari, Queen Hatshepsut, Lady Emma Hamilton, Express Wu, Boudicca, Jacqueline Susann, just to name a few. Not to mention the many female pirates which could have a posting just on them alone
No women of color on this list? No Josephine Baker? Empress Zhao?
Evelyn Nesbit was only 16 when she attracted Stanford White, the much older, married, wealthy architect. Theirs was a very complicated relationship. Harry Thaw was a demented, abusive son of a Pittsburgh coal baron. He was also obsessed with Evelyn, and felt White “ruined” her. He shot White in front of an audience watching a musical, because of jealousy. He was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity, sent to a mental hospital, escaped (he had the run of the grounds), ran to Canada, was eventually brought back.
I felt bad for Evelyn. Here was this young beautiful girl who just wanted to be on the stage. She didn’t encourage either man. I believe she, in her later years, became a sculptor and art teacher in California.
Read “The Girl on the Red Velvet Swing” by Simon Baatz.
Yea they really played dirty like she was the one enticing them on.
@@brookelynnenewcomer943she was an innocent child.
@@HeronCoyote1234 without a doubt.
How can anyone not know who Betty Page is? She’s an icon
Likely because Marilyn Monroe often outshined her.
Bettie Page wasn't just an icon, She was a freaking legend!
There are women outside of Europe and the U.S 🙌🏽
How about Dowager Empress Cixi and Queen Ranavalona I of Madagascar?
Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz
You could have included Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, but apparently there are no historical women who speak other languages.
All of these women have very interesting stories, really, i enjoyed this top a lot. Have a happy friday afternoon, Kirsten. Take care and God bless you, greetings from Colombia to you as well.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention Juana Inés de la Cruz.
I love your historic video lists.
What about St Hildegard, the nun who was the first to write about the female orgasm and a lot of other things. I believe in 1300/1400
There is a brewery in Jasper, Alabama, a town Tallulah Bankhead spent her childhood, named after her. The doors say that Tallulah "swings both ways."
black women ? latin women ? where ?
Asian, Polynesian? Anything? Nope. They really phoned this one in
@@natashakafoteka3667 yeah
So glad to see Evelyn on the list. I played her in Ragtime
Was it fun?
@@roguejester4986 We did the concert version so I didn’t get to swing, but I ADORE that musical ❤️
@@Tummyachesurvior Still sounds like fun no doubt.
I saw the thumbnail and immediately said: “Oh! That’s Evelyn Nesbit!!”
Same!
I would also mention Alice Roosevelt
Love her
Evelyn Nesbit has always fascinated me. I heard about her years ago and only recently researched her entire life story. She had one hell of a life and it’s a shame she was entangled in the misdoings of her wicked husband.
I've heard of all them and read books about most of them!
Josephine Baker should be on the list!
Baker is not unknown
Who doesn't know who Bettie Page is?
Me I've never heard of her she sounds iconic tho 🖤
Aggripina is related to Vipsania, which it's my name. Loving this.
Hypatia was Greco-Egyptian, not Roman. She was also a pagan who was brutally (and I mean brutally!!) slaughtered by Christians. I've heard of them all, but I've spent a good part of my life reading history for enjoyment. There are the two Digby women: Jane (Lady Ellenborough and also mistress to Ludwig I of Bavaria) and Pamela (Mrs Randolph Churchill - Winston's daughter=in-law; Mrs Leland Hayward; and Mrs Averell Harriman) who died while US Ambassador to France.
Ive heard of them all!! I love evelyn nesbit
WOOOOW 😮
My sister loves bettie page. Even saw the movie about her
Mata Hari
Ah the good old fellow Frisian lass.
Looking forward to the follow up video with women Kiera Knightly couldn’t play without extremely offensive makeup
Christa Päffgen aka Nico
HEY!!! Puppet History Made It To Ms. Mojo?!?!?
Colette is also responsible for discovering Audrey Hepburn: She saw her as a young woman and cast her in the stage adaptation of Gigi. ❤❤
Elizabeth Ann Linley Sheridan
LOVED THE TOPIC OF THESE NON APOLOGETIC WOMEN
This is a great example of white feminism. Not to take away from any of the accomplishments of these women, I just think it would've been nice to see someone who doesn't present as euro-centric. Sadder still is that this was posted in Black history month. I'm not even American, never been there. But even I know it's black history month. It's clear that msmojo doesn't have a very diverse staff. Oof.
Like 20 years today or in the late 18th century
Let not gloss over the fact that Stanford killed his wife's (Nesbit) abuser and rapist.
You have it backwards. Harry Kendall Thaw killed Stanford. Stanford was the one that r@ped and abused her, but Harry have abused her as well. So they both disgusting men
In miss universe 2023 sheynnis palacios from nicaragua and she won during the final q&a she mention mary wollstonecraft that she adnmire woman no limits of age so woman could work in any age that so 2023 make her history.
Edith Wilson?
Society seems to hate it when women want to live out their lives to the fullest
The Duchess is my ancestor!
Victoria Woodhull
When I was a teenager, my dad bought me a shirt covered with photos of Ms. Page. I wore it until it fell apart.
Harriet Mordaunt was engulfed in a tragic scandal with the Prince of Wales
Agrippina the Younger over Livia?
as the footage indicates, most of these women 'you've never heard of' had biopics made about them.
I've heard of all of these women. Glad you are highlighting but the title does not do them, or you, justice.
What about Eva Peron?
Anck-Su-Namun 🗿
Bettie Page...she is still incredibly famous 😂
Weird how so many of them look exactly like Keira Knightley.
Msmojo on Valentines day you should do a top 10 animated couples who should of had there wedding on screen annd if you do make sure to include Blu and Jewel because there a couple I wish had a wedding on screen
Like we say in mexico, 'Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere else'
George Sand
Some of the women depicted in this video weren’t played by Keira knightly. Is this a mistake?
I've heard of all of them..... why don't you put a question mark at the end of your title?
What makes you think no one has ever heard of these women? You may want to change the title. Unless you are just using that title as click bait?
George’s Sand and Nelly Bly
Who remembers horrible history 😭
I watch videos on youtube all the time. It's smart and it doesn't play down to the kids
I remember watching that as a kid 😂
The title is very misleading. How exactly is Eleanor of Aquataine a scandalous women you probably haven't heard of? She was Queen of France and England and the mother of Richard the Lionheart and of John (The phoney King of England)
John became King after Richard died w/o an heir. He's the one who signed the Magna Carta.
It's possible that they were referring to younger people today may not have heard of Eleanor. As for her being scandalous, the fact that it was rumored, while visiting Jerusalem where her uncle was King, she may have had an affair with him. Not to mention that may have started her relationship with Henry of Anjou (the future King Henry II of England) shortly before she divorced her first husband King Louis VII. She may also have been considered scandalous because in 1173 she led her sons in a revolt against her husband Henry and when that failed he had her locked away until Henry's death in 1189
Wallis Simpson the Duchess of Windsor she nearly brought down the monarchy when she married Prince Edward who was the King
And now MM is trying to and is referred to as Walmart Wallis
Never heard of? Just how ignorant to you think your viewers are?
Gay = scandalous ok
Where's Madonna?
Either Madonna you're talking about, are not 'never heard of'. They don't fit the category
Heddy Lamar was an icon and amazing inventor who never got credit. I’m mentally adding her to this list.
