Awesome comic! Just a bit of context: this was a "paycheck job". Breccia needed money to pay for her wife medicine so Oesterheld cook up this series. It was originally published in "Misterix", an adventure centric magazine for teens. He used his owned students as models for reference. Horacio Lalia, another great comic book artist, was his model for Mort Cinder. And he used himself for the Ezra Winston character. He didn´t use photos, he just took basic quick drawings/notes of the model and then work the rest on the page. The trees of the cemetery sequence, from the Lead eyes story, was done by pouring white ink over the blacks and then blowing softly to create the trees and branches.
His Lovecraft comics are incredible. He was really able to draw the unthinkable.

Breccia is brilliant! Argentina has this superb tradition in comics that you should discover: from Patoruzú and Mafalda (actually, all of Quino is great) to Lino Palacios, Divito and Fontanarrosa for comic strips. In the more narrative side of comics you have the work of writers such as Robin Wood, Carlos Trillo, Ray Collins and the other works of Oesterheld. The art of Oswal, the first Hugo Pratt, Jorge and Arturo Perez del Castillo, Enrique Breccia, Carlos Meglia, Alcatena, Mandrafina, Calvi, there are lots of good cartoonists in Argentina! Hope you could enjoy them all. Love the channel, btw!

PERRAMUS is a great Breccia release that Fantagraphics put out as well! A monster tome, with a totally different look than the Mort Cinder stuff. Super washy and weird.

Happy to see how Argentina's comics are read outside the country and seeing the influence they've had. Stuff like Eternaut and Mort Cinder are still to this day very popular here. There are dozens of cheap editions you can still buy on news stands. I wanted to add two things, Breccia was actually from Uruguay, but he did indeed worked and lived in Argentina. Also, about Breccia's use of reference and models: he is sort of recognized for using other comic book artists and himself as model for the characters. In Mort Cinder, the old man, Winston I think is called, is actually based on Breccia himself, so he would just have a mirror by his drawing table and copy his own expressions. Love the channel, hope to see more argentine comics in the future, and maybe some Corto Maltese by Hugo Pratt!

Since that time you guys flipped through some Breccia pages on Heavy Metal I've been waiting for this moment: my favorite coinesseurs commenting my favorite artist. Thanks for highlighting some of south american cartoonists. Ed hit the spot when mentioned Warren, specially Ortiz. And Jim, I took inking classes from a brazilian horror comic book master who knew the Breccia techniques, It´s true, he often used razorblades to ink . And if I could add something, the 300 reference is not the strongest link to Miller, if you guys search for the Poe and Lovecraft adaptations we can see that Miller got his Sin City style not from Muñoz as people usually say, but from Breccia.

    Yessss…. Breccia, un maestro !!!!!
You were wandering about what type of magazine was published? In Argentina, we have a great tradition of comic book´s magazine gear to different audiences (children, adult, etc.)
Mort Cinder first appearance was a magazine with “historietas” for adults (comics in Spanish), call MISTERIX in the 60´s.

Cinder's face is the one of Breccia's friend and assistant, Horacio Lalia, while that of Ezra Winston is actually Alberto Breccia's own as an old man.

Sadly, yesterday, we lost one of the great cartoonist in Argentina: QUINO (1932 - 2020).

Wow, what a coincidence. I just found an omnibus copy of The Eternaut by Oesterheld and Francisco Solano Lopez at a street sale. Nice crazy lady let it go for 5.00 cdn. Haven't read it all but the art is stellar and the story is pretty compelling sci-fi. Nice to learn more about the South American comic scene during this time.

Great video! I really love Breccia's work!
13:56 Breccia would use his friends and even his assistant Horacio Lalia (who then became a magnificent comic artist himself) as models. Moreover, Breccia took from Lalia (aging Lalia's look, of course) Mort Cinder's face.

Beautiful stuff. It’s been on my list to pick up for a bit now. I just bought Breccia’s PARRAMUS from Fanta the other week, I’m and it’s incredible so far. Glad to hear a little about his technique because each panel seems to have some incredible texture that I just don’t think I’ve ever seen before.

    Way to cover Breccia.
The Eternaut is an interesting piece as well.
Krigstein came from somewhat of a fashion drawing background, or in the very least from a lifestyle "magazine" illustration school. Breccia probably had some influence from this direction too, but maybe from a more naturalistic school of anatomical study and expression.
So, you guys got me thinking now about what I would recommend that is top shelf cartooning... Max Andersson's Death and Candy four issue mini-series (much of this has not been collected anywhere else that I know of... uniquely humorous), and 100 Demons by Lynda Barry. I think this is her most solid and compelling work. I loved every page of it.

Small note, Breccia was from Uruguay, not Argentina. He did almost all of his work for Argentinean authors and Argentinean publishing companies, but he was born in Urugauy. His family moved to Argentina when he was 3 years old, and later in his life he was granted Argentinean citizenship.
