- WSF is proud to be the title sponsor of this important and timely film from Jason Matzinger hat explores the history and importance to conservation of a selective harvest, aka, trophy hunting, which is being misrepresented and under attack in a way that could impact all hunting and future conservation efforts.
ABOUT THE FILM 49:30 run time
In the Lexicon of hunting, one word has evolved more than any other, the Trophy. The concept of a trophy first emerged through the lens of our innate appreciation for the grandest and oldest ambassadors of the wilderness- a testament to the challenges faced and the reverence held for these remarkable creatures. Yet, misconceptions and misrepresentations have cast a shadow over this terminology, transforming it into an unjust weapon aimed at the heart of all hunting endeavors. And yet, the practice of removing older male animals that have already genetically contributed to herd health has long been a cornerstone of responsible hunting. Such a selective harvest was an imperative step towards the recovery and sustainability of game species and the birth of a stewardship mindset that safeguards the vibrancy of our ecosystems. It's time for sportsmen to reclaim the narrative and embrace the profound conservation benefits entwined within the art of selective hunting. Filmmaker Jason Matzinger illuminates the careful choices and deep responsibility inherent in selective hunting as he takes to the Northwest Territories to pursue the right wild Sheep trophy.
Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep is the pinnacle of North American game. Other sheep are a close second. Great video 👍🏻
Thank you!
I have been a lifetime hunter... born and raised in Montana. This was a great story and very educational. However, I feel like it was an injustice to not have shown the kill shot. To protect the sensitive is an injustice to the life of the ram.
Way to go guys nice ram👍👍👁️
Much appreciated! Thank you!
What a GREAT conservation documentary! My good friend, Ashley Woolstenhulme, introduced this to me. Priceless. I have never hunted for sheep, but gained an unbelievable perspective. Thank you!
Thank you! I really appreciate the compliment and thank Ashley for introducing the film to you!
Hands down the best video I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you for so eloquently visualizing the true heart of hunters and the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation.
I am truly humbled by your compliment. Thank you!
Nailed it Jason! Thank you for all that you do sir!
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
While being mentally and physically prepared to take on the challenge of sheep hunting, the most difficult part is having enough money to actually do it. If you plan to get the grand slam those pockets will need to be very very deep. If you can afford the hundreds of thousands to pay for the tag, transportation on jets, bush planes, helicopters, guides, equipment, taxidermy you will also have to be in a position to have to pay for the most expensive part, time. Time away from your family and business that afforded you the income to pay for the hunt.
For the most part 99% of the hunters will never be able to afford even one sheep hunt and for that small percentage that can Pull it off, I am not jealous of, it is just what it is. The hunters that pay for those hunts, record and publish their experiences in a magazine or here on CZcams I am thankful for. Thanks to those who do share because in a small way that’s what the average hunters dreams are made of as we sit in a deer stand on public lands with our fellow hunters. We picture in our mind what that dream sheep hunt would be like, if we ever get that chance.
Don't forget the gratuity that is expected...
Thank you for a great presentation! Thank you for using your sheep hunt to tell a bigger story! A story that certainly needs to be told and heard!
Thank you! I really appreciate the compliments and support!
Great film. All hunters especially new hunters young and old should watch this. Well Done!
Thank you for the compliments! We are doing our best to raise awareness about this topic and getting it out in as many places as possible!
5 star video! Couldn't have been better.
I really appreciate hearing that you enjoyed the film. Thank you!
Thank you Jason for another great piece you created! The vastness and feeling of being there has to be something, hopefully, this will give a better understanding of the other side of conservation and hunting to the people who see it differently than us who hunt and preserve!
That is our hope behind producing this film and we will keep pushing to get the message out there! Thank you for the compliments and support!
Excellent film guys.

Jason this was one of the best films done! So many key aspects surfaced in this from conservation to whole health a topic that is our top priority! Thank you for doing such a great job on the film, the narrative and thank you to the wild sheep foundation, Boone and crocket and so many other organizations! Keep up the amazing work!
I really appreciate that my friend, Thank You! We are doing our best to push this out there on as many platforms as we can possibly get it on! Much appreciated!
What an absolutely great and informative video. I love how you combined a hunt while explaining the conservation benefits of well-managed hunting. And I love that you described what a "trophy" actually is. Great job and thank you!!!
Right on! Glad you enjoyed the film and message behind it! Thank you.

Amazing work Matzinger and congratulations on a hunt of a lifetime! Also, amazing job to the field producer(s) capturing the hunt, those guys/gals go unnoticed as they sacrifice so much to bring these stories to life! Selective will be new terminology I add. Bravo to all involved! Oh and see you in a couple weeks Dustin!
Fantastic! That's what we like to hear! Thank you very much for the compliments! None of these stories could happen without the support of a lot of talented people no doubt!
Incredible film. Love this perspective on things and all hunters alive today would do right on themselves by digesting this. Thanks Jason and thanks Wild Sheep Foundation.
Much appreciated brother! Thank you for the support!
Awesome!
Thank you!
Speechless!!! Should been shown in every public school. My boys are homeschooled. They will watch this incredible educational film
Thank you! That would be incredible if we could get this into public schools!
Great film!
Thank you!
No one does it better!
Thank you so much for the great compliment! Stoked you enjoy them!
I don't use the word "Trophy". I use, Mature animal. An animal that has had a chance to spread its gene's onto the next generation. I hunt whitetail deer in the ADK mountains. Its a very challenging place to hunt. I don't brag or show my accomplishments. I have such respect for these mountain bucks.
I sure respect that. Thank you for watching and sharing!
Awsome video congrats on your ram!
Thank you! What a hunt!
That was fantastic
Thank you so much and for everything you are doing to help keep these traditions alive!
This is a great video and true testament to ethical sportsmanship and integrity! However, it starts up like a trophy hunt and perhaps loosing interest to a non hunter! The values conveyed towards the middle and end of this video may have been better suited up front, to captivate the general public early in the film?
As a hunter, this preaches to the converted. But some hunters may waiver in their ethics if an over mature specimen was not in the population. As guides, it must be very hard to have a client go home empty handed, or not have that wonderful culmination experience of tasting the fruit of the labour, up on the mountainside, after all the time, effort and expense? Some clients may choose to take a prime breeder, if a monarch was not in the cards? A tough decision for both involved!
Good film but why talk about how a arrow and bullet are the most humane way for a wild animal to die if you don't even show the kill shot?
Great Documentary/ History of the sport/ Current film, great content and narrators. I was impressed with the film until you edited the kill shot. Stay true to the sport! Pretty sure Jack O’Connor would not have edited the kill shot not being worried about what someone would say. You have your target audience. Sorry just my two cents and I know you probably have lots of conversation over that point before the release.
Fantastic film unfortunately allot of stone sheep outfits taking big tipped out 7 year olds now just so the resident hunters don’t
I lost all respect for the Boone and Crockett club when they themselves confirmed desert sheep from Rancha La Guarida in Mexico are allowed entry into their record books. I asked Jose, the owner about this, and he said he must donate a sheep hunt annually in exchange for his sheep to be eligible for entry. This ranch is high fenced. Their "fair chase" principals are easily bought, apparently.
Never felt any interest to enter any of my whitetails into Pope and Young or Boone and Crockett. They are my trophies and I am not interested in being in any books. That’s not why I hunt.
But that is just for me. I am not telling anyone else what they should or should not do
Fair enough! It shouldn't be why anyone does it in my opinion. However the records keeping system is the most highly regarded collection of data points ever assembled proving that hunting is working as a valuable conservation tool. It is nice to see the trends in wildlife around North America. That being said, congrats on your whitetails and best of luck out there this season!
nothig more inhumane than an animal starving to death......
It is not a pretty thing to witness. Thank you for watching!
Has a quote from Fred Bear about the ease of which a trophy is obtained. As well as a quote in the beginning of the temperament to become a sheep hunter. Yet you carry around a bow the whole hunt and finish the hunt with a rifle like a quitter. The real trophy would have been walking off the mountain with a sheep that was harvested with your bow, or the knowledge to come back one day and complete it. "You can learn more bow hunting in a week, then a gun hunter will learn in his whole life" - Fred Bear.
Hunting is NOT: Vengeance, cruelty, a blood-sport, machoism, just something to do, etc. Hunting is an ancient instinctive quest to capture a quarry.......period! One should NEVER apologize or made to feel guilty for it.
I couldn't agree more. Thank you for watching!
not cheap?? probably a sponsored hunt. all these tv personalities get handed tags.
Life long bow hunter. Great video however he started with his bow and ended up shooting with a rifle and they didn’t even show the kill shot!
Weak!
👏 👏 👏
Thank you!
