      Wow, so much hate and judgement from someone who types in all caps and can't spell. His sharpening geometry is correct. For sharpening the edge only gentle pressure should be applied. It would have been helpful to reference clearance angles. There's inherent risks in using a cutoff disc in general. There's a thing called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY that seems to have been lost on people in the last few generations. CZcams is a place to share ideas and techniques, and this isn't an OSHA sanctioned place for information. Take what you want and leave the rest....

      an appropriate measure of caution addresses that. NO excess pressure on the bit, dont need to anyway, just shaving a fraction of a mm to restore the sharp edge. also regarding the guard, at times they are the SOURCE of the safety hazard, like a skill saw where the guard wants to 'flop down' and interfere with the movement of the blade.

They would not grind properly when set up according to instructions, and I read the instruction over and over again. They kept coming up with newer models that were supposedly better than the one before. Of course the first model was supposed to be the pinnacle of drill sharpening! It would also grind a lot of material off, removing far more metal than necessary, and making the bit too short. Freehand works much better, and I no longer even use an electric grinder. I got a vintage hand cranked grinder that turns much slower, and so removes just enough metal to make a new cutting edge.

    1. Removing the guards and using a thin cutoff wheel in this manner is very dangerous, should the wheel shatter. At the very least, use a thick grinding wheel for this.

    If sharpening a drill bit was this simple, then everyone would own a cheap, simple device that works like a pencil sharpener to grind the tips of their drill bits when they get dull...and without the risk to life and limb this method offers.

    Technique is so ancient it predates guards.
    Also you can't sharpen a drill bit, like that. It won't create a proper cutting edge as it won't have a proper relief angle. This is why proper drill sharpeners are cammed

      Not if you're using two discs like he was. Two discs together create a hollow just like a full grinding disc. Hence they need the other side of the spindle nut to keep the additional disc centred.

    I'm a Scientific Instrument Maker by trade with secondary trade qualifications as fitter and first class machinist, and I can say this method will not work, is unsafe (downright dangerous actually, because it requires side grounding on a cutting disk). In particular it will not provide the required clearance angle behind the cutting edge or provide for other point angles if required. Careful observation of the drill after allegedly sharpening by this method shows a clearance angle which was not present immediately after grinding. I can only conclude the author is lying and actually ground the drill using an offhand grinding machine to provide a clearance angle after the alleged method was used. All in all I this video should be taken down as a dangerous inducement by an unqualified person for others to be severely injured. Do not use this method!

    The retaining nut holding the discs onto the grinder should be the other way up, its only holding on a small areaat the centre of the disc, not good practice or safe.

    Нужно делать спуски, помимо заточки режущей кромки. При правильной заточке сверла стружка идёт сплошной завитушкой.
    Берете сверло, ставите шлифовальный диск в болгарку и вручную затачиваете, после сверлите металл. После 3 сверл понимание придёт.

    As others have said, what was done in the vid does not sharpen a drillbit in a way where it actually cuts. The geometry of the cut isn't that simple. Try to sharpen a bit like this, and it's easy to see.

    • @aeromach2007
      @aeromach2007 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Correct It will get you a good angle on each flute assuming it is centered so one gets a round hole, but it doesn't give the bit any relief though. I've got one of those Drill Dr. sharpeners that does the same thing AND centers it, but not enough relief so I have to grind that in afterwards. Still does a nice job pf sharpening though.
