Deep Rock Galactic has been in the oven for a few years now, and with its 1.0 release I decided to take a look. I'm very glad I did - this is rock solid title.

REE ANIMATION & GAMING Hey man I just watched this review and I just want to say I haven’t bought this game yet since I haven’t really heard of it. For some reason, when I read your comment it really got to me. It’s just nice to see devs of a game actually care about their product and take in criticism/feedback (whether good or bad). As an avid Destiny 2 player, it really hit me in the feels. Your comment really shows that you guys care about your product and that you care about the consumers that purchase it. I’m going to buy this game right now and play it when I am off of work for the weekend.

Honestly, you got it wrong with the enemy types. You say 2-3 enemy types. From the footage it looks like you probably played on the second easiest difficulty out of 5, which is easy enough that the enemy variance is limited. In the higher difficulties in addition to the basic grunts, swarmers (the tiny ones), the praetorians (the big ones) and others seen in the video, you also face these:
    - 2 extra variants of grunts (one does more damage, one is armored)
    - Wardens, which shield other units until killed
    - Biome specific Praetorians that do elemental damage
    - 2 types of ranged grunts, one spits acid that does damage, the other spits web which slows you and obscures vision
    - Exploders which charge you and suicide bomb you
    - The exploders big daddy, the Bulk Detonator, which has massive explosive attacks the size of most objective areas
    - Menaces, which do hit and run attacks with ranged attacks from afar
    - Sandworm-like Trawlers in sand biome maps
    - Flying enemies, which include:
    - Spawns, that just spit goo at you slowly
    - 2 variants of Bombers that throw blobs that stick to the ground and slow you down
    - Shockers, tiny amoeba type enemies which flock to you and start shocking you, along with larger breeders that spawn them
    - Q'Ronar, 2 variants of Droideka types of rolling enemies
    - Konar, currently a very hard almost boss-level enemy that constantly heals itself and spawns enemies around itself
Around half of these appear in all missions, the rest are biome specific or just rarer. There's no way you can say that "you really fight the same 2 to 3 enemy types 80% of the time". In the higher difficulties the basic grunts and the like become cannon fodder you just deal with, but the real fight comes with tackling the special enemies before they become an issue. Like killing grabbers before they grab anyone, which isn't that hard since they have a distinct audio cue when they're coming in to attack.
Also your issues with the weapons didn't mention the later game overclocks that you can attach to them, which make them work very differently and have some really satisfying effects to them. You didn't really mention the ability to use alternate weapons either, I wonder if you missed that content entirely?

    • @theboard4207
      @theboard4207 Před 3 lety +142

In one mission one haz 3 you can expect to see a swarmer, grunt, guard, slasher, praetorian, webspitter, acidspitter, warden, menace and sometimes an oppressor. There’s also mactera spawn, grabbers, and bombers. Occasional brood nexus and spitball infectors. And of course last and certainly most hated fucking cave leeches. Yes there are others but most of the ones I left out are either rare or are biome dependent

Exactly, on top of that, the audio cues are also not nearly as bad as he said.

BigDickMcree Everyone gets caught out from time to time, but that’s what shields are for! However, if you’ve cleared a wave completely there is really no excuse aa you can hear any and every spawn. Most people just get complacent and ignore the warning noises to keep mining as the time between the audio cues and the actual arrival of the bugs can be quite long. If I get hit mining its because Im being greedy to get that extra couple of pick swings in, not because I haven’t heard them burrow out of the walls.

Yea, it is 2021. Date is time measured from the beginning of the calendar (Anno Domini or AD). It is measured time. So there is no year 0000, the date 0000 itself is the beginning moment, has no length while the whole year after till 0001 is the first year. As such YES, we are inside 2021, 2020 is already over.
It's just human nature to shorten stuff and it's much easier to say year 2020 than year marked with 2020. But the two are really far from being the same.

Yeah exactly. Throughout the entire combat critique I was wondering what hazard he plays at. Me and my bud always play on haz 4 and have an incredible time setting up ziplines and defenses in preparation for completing objectives. the combat isn't groundbreaking or anything, but throwing down a dome shield and mowing through massive hordes of enemies before zipping away when the dome falls NEVER gets old. Or taking out a chunk of enemies with the grenade launcher on engineer. Or grappling around and outmaneuvering a Dreadnaught as scout. It never feels bad imo.

    • @chrismulkey7341
      @chrismulkey7341 Před 4 lety +67

Also saying you only fight 3 or so variants consistently is pretty wrong. Excluding all the more "Elite/Rare" ones. You have (Forgot names, fight me) grunts, armored grunts, slashy grunts, Praets, Acid Spitters, Web Spitters, Mactera, Goo Bombers, and Swarmlings. Those are all very common to fight. And there are PLENTY of rarer ones.
On top of that, the one thing he didn't touch on in regards to variety. Is the environment changes how you fight. Sure you could face a swarm of grunts a few times, but how you fight them is going to drastically change depending on where you're standing at the moment. On a tiny platform, cliff, surrounded by lava, in a crevice, sand storm, snow storm, etc.

@@XXMASTERRIKUXX Yeah the combat is actually really good IMO, there's not a ton of weapons in the game, but you can pick various combinations of upgrades that completely change how the weapons feel. For example, there's a modifier for the engineer's grenade launcher that turns the grenades into mini-nukes, in exchange you get a dramatically reduced max ammo pool. There's not hundreds of different enemy types or anything crazy, but depending on the biome you're in, it changes how some of the enemies work and not to mention the mission modifiers that make things more challenging.

I still remember my first hazard four. It was in the sandblasted corridors, and the cave was just one big, deep hole. The drop pod during evac landed at the very top of it, and me as a driller, and my gunner friend, had to scale the top of it. We were both at the final jump to the evac pod, and I miss my jump. I fell to my death, while watching in horror as my friend is grabbed by a mactera, and dropped down the entire length of the cave. We didn’t escape.

All of us except the engineer made it, but we didn't have time to go back for him.

It took me a long time until I finish the tunnel. However I miscalculated it and fall to my death just a couple of meters from the evac point. - There are weapon mods that 100% change how weapons work (like turning the grenade launcher into a mini-nuke launcher)
    - The combat ramps up to 3000% when you're on the hardest difficulty and is WAY more fun then the lower difficulties
    - The endgame loop is really about collecting cosmetics

Bosco doesn't just 'work surprisingly well', he is the most overpowered AI team mate/companion I've ever seen in any game up to this day. He is basically all the four classes combined into one tiny machine. He is able to shed light, shoot enemies, mine terrain and minerals, support to carry items, shoot explosive missiles. He is overpowered but also extremely well balanced at the same time. GSG really did a great job on fine tuning Bosco, people will rarely see something that is both overpowered and well balanced in other games, it's either one or the other.
This isn't just one of the best co-op games ever made, it is THE BEST CO-OP GAME you can find. L4D, B4B, Gunfire Reborn, none of these can even hold a candle to DRG, not even close. Imagine dropping into a mission with three other dwarves, never met them, never spoken to them, and all four of you are completely in sync with no comms or voice chat, that experience is common in DRG, that's when you know that the devs are doing it right.
No microtransactions, no pay to win elements, free season pass and everything can be unlocked just by playing the game, and the game is only under 4GB. The only things that can be purchased with real money are the exclusive DLC skins which are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay in any way. I normally don't buy DLCs from games unless they are worth it but GSG is an exception because they deserve my money.
Simply spectacular, this is the one game that I will never ever uninstall from my PC.

    A story:
Bought it on the winter steam sale. I drop into my first match clueless as all fuck. There are a few veteran players there and they immediately salute me as I jump out of my pod right in the middle of a battle. I start shooting randomly because its dark as fuck. The scout throws out a flare and I just see we're in this huge cavern with hundreds of tiny fucks running right towards us along the ceiling. The flamethrower is going off to my back and I throw down my shield bubble as they start overwhelming us. We fight through it and salute each other as we start mining. On the way back to the droppod the driller and I are separated from the pack and get lost in the tunnel system - we dug the wrong way. Im protecting the driller from huge ass bugs as we try desperately to get to the drop pod. 1 minute... 30 seconds... 10 seconds... we might make it... nope, we drill through to a bigger cavern and see huge bugs looking down at us. Overwhelmed and die only 30m from the drop pod. We saluted each other as my shield bubble went down. I am ADDICTED

New people coming to this review should know, the developers are still working hard on this game. It has only gotten better... So much better. There's more biomes, more mission types, a new primary weapon for each class (and new secondaries coming soon in 2022), overclocks that heavily modify how weapons work, more enemy types, and so much more! It's a cheap game to buy, but I will never in a million years doubt that I got my money's worth out of it already and I'm still getting more out of it to this day.

It's a really nice video but I want to point out some things :
    - The game was in early acces for only 2 years. I wanted to precise that because "for years" doesn't feel like it's making any justice about it when so many games are stuck in EA for way more than 4 or 5 years.
    - There's only one type of flying enemy that can pick you up and there's a counter to that : if you shoot them, they release you. Ofc, when you show it in the video, both of your mates are downed and unable to help you but there's definitely an other way to counter them than just this "one perk".
    - 30% combat, as many people said that before me, is mostly untrue. It really depends on the difficulty you're playing on.
    - Trust me, there are caves that are very similar. You might not have seen yet but it's a thing. Though, to be fair, the developpers are working hard to make each cave feels more unique. ^^
    - There are around 20 different enemies, and I'm not including those who are too similar to each other in that list. And the devs are going to add even more. "you're really fighting the 2-3 same enemies" feels really inaccurate.
    - Regarding the "audio cues", again I think you're expecting the game to hold your hand (in fact, a few enemies warn you that they are about to attack very consistently). You are on a very dangerous planet, you ARE supposed to be careful, you ARE supposed to watch each other's back within your team (and it's even funnier when you complain about it when you are the gunner : the one who's dedicated to the protection of his team).
    - Actually the sound design is REALLY good in this game and the quality is high up there.
Now, having said that, I must add : it's totally okay to not be fond of the combat system and to prefer the whole exploration/mining part but it really sounds like you needed the game to have flaws (and it has flaws obviously but not the one you picked, funnily enough), problem is that you turned your preferences into flaws when... well... they aren't. xD
Anyway, Rock and Stone brother !

My goal is to just rank up as much as possible while getting all the cosmetics. And the combat can be very rewarding, especially helping out new players and showing them the best way to play and explain a lot of details about the game to them.

240 hours in by now, maxed all classes, got all perks, nearly all weapon overclocks (read: sidegrade mods) and I can STILL attest I play this game solely for the fun gameplay loop and "fashionframe" endgame. This is one of the best COOP games you can grab, with early access truly done right from the start. A killer synth soundtrack and "alien" atmosphere are shifting seamlessly into laid-back humor and action.
The devs have been constantly upgrading the game for free with consistently great updates. All classes have kept their identity and are fun to play. The devs also play the game themselves and stay on top of fan feedback on reddit. The biggest feat of DRG is that it didn't ever dive to deep (heh!) into any microtransactions, ever. Yes, there are some skin and soundtrack packs, but you always get what you pay for here - no RNG, booster or ingame-currency bullshit ever. I bought the supporter upgrade back in EA and didn't regret a dime spent ever since.
Aside from minor lags when you are not the host the netcode is top notch. People can late-join or re-join a game no problem. The lobby works, you can help friends with no leveling restrictions and - if you don't have friends to play with -joining a random game is also no problem whatsoever.
Seriously - give this game a roll, you won't ever regret it. It shows what a good coop game can look like without the AAA-corporate bullshit.

I bought the game based on this recommendation. I've always been single-player focused, so I wasn't expecting much to change, even though I started playing by just starting my own open sessions. And as far as PvE co-op games like this go, I can say... I *get it* now. I had an egg extraction where everything was in one central cavern. It was the easiest extraction ever, I could've gotten flattened by the landing pod, it came down so close. Until the engineer got grabbed by a flying bug and dropped back down in the middle of the room. Staying behind to place a zipline to get him out and keeping the bugs off him with my chaingun until we could all extract together was one of the most enjoyable emergent experiences I've had with a game. I personally cannot second this entire review enough.

"The little buggers are just a little too small"
Driller's flamer is really effective at moping them up with sticky flames.
"There are flying enemies that can pick up and grab you and there is nothing you can do about it"
The Mactera Grabber (the enemy shown) is heavily telegraphed through audio ques when its coming to grab someone, and will instantly back off when a small threshold of damage has been met.
Sure its frustrating to get grabbed, but you have a lot of opportunity to avoid being grabbed in the first place.
"80% of the time you're fighting the same 1 or 2 enemy types"
While there isn't as much enemy variety as I'd like, its likely the fact you were playing on hazard 2. Certain biomes have near constant special enemies at haz 3 and especially haz 4 and 5.
"The audio design is really lackluster and enemies have a habit of sneaking up on you"
You're not wrong when referring to most of the grunts, however. When waves of enemies do spawn, there is a burrowing noise for when they appear that signals where they are coming from.
As for getting snuck up on by 1 or 2 enemies in the darkness, I think its pretty subjective. I won't lie, it can be annoying. But it can also be terrifying in the same way a horror movie can. It all depends on how much danger you're in.
A note on the combat, you say you don't play for the combat and that's totally fair, but some of your critiques about it I feel miss the mark about it. Is it anything groundbreaking? No, but is it satisfying with its own unique flavour of mechanics and customization. Its definitely a major part of the draw especially on the highest difficulty where even with a team of experience miners working together you still have moments where victory isn't a certainty.
As for progression, its a lie that what you're doing hour 1 and hour 30 is the same. Once you get a dwarf promoted (somewhere between the 30-50 hour mark) you do unlock a large part of the end game content. Elite deep dives can be especially brutal and not at all similar to your hour 1 in game. The higher difficulties such as Hazard 5 which needs to be unlocked is MUCH different than hour 1 playing at hazard 2 or 3.
There is a lot of total overclocks and cosmetics unique to what you get doing the weekly core hunts and deep dives meaning that there is cosmetic progression. If you want cosmetics for certain classes there are machine events which appear within levels that require blank cores to give you one of 3 loot options.
Let me tweak your phrase a little bit to sum things up "There is a difference between hour 1 and hour 30, but between level 30 and level 300, its mostly solid gameplay, and gradual cosmetic unlocks, as well as experience with higher difficulties.

Not on hazard 5 though. Those mactera swarms won't kill themselves.
As for the combat, I have weirdly more fun with the least lethal dwarf. The scout has less firepower than his brothers but with the right perks to increase speed, combined with the grapplin hook, it feels like Spider-Man playing the Doom Slayer in the middle of hell. With equally skilled players, the Scout will always be the last dwarf standing thanks to his mobility. And dealing with a massive horde only to see your friends fall one after the other, fills you with excitement when you manage to escape, take your breath and dive back into the action to finally pick them up one by one and repel those buggers.

I would like to comment on the enemy section, there are load of enemies. Now in hazard 1-2 yes, there are mostly grunts (the basic guys) and pretorians (the big green dudes), but from hazard 3-5 there are much more all the time. Grunts make up the hordes as they are weak, slashers deal more damage, and guards take less damage, there are a variety ro flying enemies that dont grab you and the ones that do can be forced to drop you by your allies shooting them. There are way more enemies then I think you have seen. Also just a tip, of enemies appear next to you, you have a powerful AOE melee attack for a reason, use it
TLDR: There are a bunch of enemy types, play on higher hazards (3-5) and they branch out a lot more

added note, I personally love the combat and how the different classes' weapons can compliment each other - scout's grenades providing a general crowd control supporting role, or having armour breaking on the PURE DOPAMINE that is the minigun so that your teammates can also unload into it - and so on. One of my favourite little quirks or added details is the driller's neurotoxin grenade also being flammable - making huge explosions is always fun and can also be triggered by other classes if they have certain upgrades - hot bullets for the minigun for example. At higher difficulties barely clinging to life to make it to the drop pod or just about holding your ground long enough to finish an objective can be a BIG rush.
The sound design with enemies is a bit of an issue - easily fixed with some footstep sounds for the bugs or maybe more agro sounds - especially with the cave leech, that thing is virtually undetectable. The gun sounds and the splatting of the enemies is so satisfying, hearing the bugs explode when set on fire is morbid but fun to hear in a swarm, there's really no other gripes for me

Yeah, I can't agree with Skill Up there. Combat is definitely really fun and you become a lot more dependent on each class's abilities in the higher difficulties. That's where it really shines. But yes, the sound design for the enemies could definitely use some improvement. Also the mactera grabber makes a very distinct noise when it is flying to catch someone, and if it takes any sort of damage when it's charging towards you, it will fail and fly away. It's not as much of a "nothing you can do about it" scenario as SU seems to make it out to be.

Yea the exploder bugs could probably use a better Sound Cues for when they're walking, as they're purely just a visual cue, if you're stuck somewhere (like in an alien nest) the only audio cue you get is when they're about to explode and if you're stuck, you're screwed.

    • @Twadfire
      @Twadfire Před 4 lety +3

Imho its less about loudness as much as the enemy audio cues are so unreliable as to be nearly useless. Do mind that i havent played in the last several weeks, so dunno if the audio cues changed in that time.
But in my experience so far (159 hours), FAR too often i was explicitly listening for stuff (like batteries or suspected heavy bugs) in the distance, only to get smacked by a half dozen bugs with absolutely zero warning. With headphones. Other times i can clearly hear the bugs walk all over and do their bark, but in my observations they do that when they can't easily path to me, there's an incoming horde event or i think they often bark when im shooting in their direction or looking at them directly.
Heck, the little ambient worms have more reliable audio cues than the actual enemies.
Coming from vermintide 2 where the audio cues are VERY good, this is jarring. I played DRG muted.. and honestly my experience didnt change much as far as enemy awareness go.
But i have good hope for a patch that will eventually fix that.

there are sound cues for attacking bugs. the moment a swarm switches agro to you, you will hear them shriek at you. usually there is enough time to locate and shoot them before they can reach you.

quick tip for Mactera Grabbers at 10:25 they shriek before they grab you. so you can react and shoot them before they grab you also taking the the perk Heightened Senses will help or the perk Hover Boots to avoid fall damage if dropped

I love this review except for how you described the enemy types and the weapons--I know others have made much better worded comments but it feels like you missed a bunch of content because you didn't try out Hazard 3! So much changes when you bump the hazard level and I feel that you would've been able to see even more why we love this game so damn much! Otherwise I love this and I'm glad to see another dwarf join the crew ♥️

One of my favorite games to play at the moment.
You can either have a relaxing round with your buddies and a few bears or go balls to the wall on the highest difficulty settings and have some pulse pounding action.
The simple addition of cheering your mates with V and the different tools that all work together nicely really foster teamplay among random teams and the community is the most pleasant I have experienced in...ever.
The devs are bloody brilliant and communicate a lot, even put in community feedback (like personal droppods) and it's just a fucking good game and you should buy it.
    ROCK
    AND
    STOOOONE!

Been following this game for over a year pre-release. They've done an amazing job at improving every aspect of the game, I'd guess almost half of their changes/additions came directly from player recommendations.
Edit: and using your main gun and all that ammo for the lil guys is a rookie move. Your melee attack does aoe dmg and kills them easily.

The reason you see so few enemy types and why combat isn't as fun is because you play on low hazards. Low hazards are really only for when you start out and don't have the upgrades necessary for higher difficulties.

  • @Pigeon_Productions
    @Pigeon_Productions Před 4 lety +29

Great review, but you're seriously missing out on great combat on hazard 4-5. Once you get all the upgrades and maybe a decent overclock you should try out hazard 4. all the chaos and destruction is great fun. As for the sound design I think it's really good, and I haven't had a problem with enemies sneaking up on me, but that might be just a lot of combat experience. Oh and Swarmers (those pesky little bugs) are supposed to be annoying, and the best method to deal with them is to just use a power attack. I think the combat is great, especially when you get your hands on overclocks (end-game upgrades). That's just my opinion, I'm not saying you have to play that way, I'm saying you should give it a go.

Haz 4 is the best difficulty. It merges together everything perfectly. Danger, darkness and dwarves. Haz 5 is just a straight up nightmare doe. Unless there is a positive modifier.

@@peao010109 I love haz5 with a group of friends who don't mind failing, and just want that challenge. But Haz4 is definitely the normal for myself. I feel comfortable there, and its still not a cake walk most of the time.
Most of the time, cause the difficulty is HELLA RNG. Plenty of times Haz4 has felt like Haz6. I've even failed in Haz3 when I'm helping some peeps get into the game. Not a complaint, I love the RNG, you never know what kind of match you're getting.

This is honestly the best medicine for what has been ailing me. I've been having such a hard time finding action oriented Co Op games without prevalent griefing. Me and my friends used to play Rust but that community has become more and more hostile and kill on sight over time making the experience mostly one of frustration. This game looks so perfect for what I've been missing. Thanks for pointing it out sir.
