  • Imagine the surprise of an internal organ or body part pushing its way through a supposed barrier of muscle or tissue. Painful, right? That's precisely what a hernia is. In this presentation, we'll explore this health condition and its management through yoga.
    Causes of Hernias:
    - Weak muscles, congenital or acquired over time.
    - Lifting heavy objects.
    - Obesity weakening the abdominal wall.
    - Pregnancy's added weight straining abdominal muscles.
    - Frequent coughing, crying, intense gym workouts.
    - Straining during bowel movements or sneezing.
    - Previous surgeries without proper care.
    Symptoms of Hernias:
    - Noticeable lump or bulge in the abdomen or groin that appears with certain actions.
    - Swelling in the groin or scrotum.
    - Pain at the bulge site, especially during heavy lifting.
    - Hiatal hernia might lead to heartburn and indigestion.
    - Yoga's Role in Hernia Management:
    Yoga can help prevent hernias by strengthening muscles.
    Post-hernia tear, surgery is necessary.
    Post-surgery, ease back into yoga with core-strengthening poses.
    Yoga can prevent hernia worsening by strengthening abdominal muscles, weight management, and mindfulness.
    The Holistic Approach of Yoga:
    Ahar - Diet:
    - Maintain a proper diet; include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes.
    - Eat in moderation to avoid straining the abdomen.
    - Stay hydrated; avoid gas-inducing foods.
    Vihar - Rest and Recreation:
    - Move mindfully, avoid sudden jerky actions.
    - Maintain good posture while standing and walking.
    - Rest or lie down when discomfort arises.
    Achar - Routines:
    - Gradually resume asana practice post-surgery.
    - Start with lighter asanas, progressing to abdominal strengthening poses.
    - Avoid lifting both legs together.
    - Prone asanas, backbends added later.
    - Pranayamas, deep breathing exercises encouraged.
    Vichar - Thoughts:
    - Cultivate a healthy mindset.
    - Embrace your body, prioritize self-care.
    By incorporating the principles of Ahar, Vihar, Achar, and Vichar, you can create an environment conducive to your body's healing. With proper care and yoga's guidance, positive changes in hernia management are attainable.

    My son had just been diagnosed with hernia’s in his legs. Most of the doctors and physiotherapists we have seen, have not heard much of this before. Is there any yoga positions for this please 🙏

    I have inguinal hernia since 4 months right side , no pain . This was due to lifting weights and constipation. Can I be cured without surgery. I have stopped lifting and am doing apan vayu mudra while going to the washroom and taking homeopathy treatment for constipation and heart health.
