Trying some Water Based MATTE Clears on Diecast

Which looks better for these Military HUMVEE bodies? Welcome back to Diecast Resurrection, I've been to scared to pull the trigger on buying the additive to make a matte clearcoat using my 2k Urethane as its pretty expensive. These water based clear coats from Createx Colors might be the answer we've all been looking for to use on Diecast Cars. In this video I paint two Humvee Bodies a typical Army Green and finished one on Matte and the other in Satin. Which do you think looks more legit for my upcoming Power Wagon MASH style Ambulance build I'm about to start. Let me know in the comments. I personally like the Matte for military projects.

The Matt finish looks more realistic; it looks more like a Humvee I used in the wild. The satin one looks like a Humvee destined for exhibition in a car show. They're both great.
Definitely the matt finish.
for MASH era military stuff, I'd go with matte.
you should try for a mix between the two satin an matt for a low sheen look as well mate you might be surprised by that look as well for future projects an combining the different sheen's for something different affect

i agree. a matte finish is what you want for a MASH ambulance. i used to watch that show and there were no satin finished trucks in it.
Satin is nice. But for this color/project coming, matte is by far the best choice.
It's amazing how the clear coat can change everything. I mean, the castings were painted the same color but it looks like you painted a different green on each of the final results.
I would love to see more vehicles like these or even construction vehicles :D

What would be awesome. That Satin Humvee as a base, mask it off and do Matte on the cloth roof and cloth doors.
As someone who's painted a number of military vehicles, USMC '76-'92, the base green is a dark forest green with a flat finish.
As for the plastic top & doors they are more of a semi gloss.
When I do wargame miniatures, I usually use the satin finish for any kind of sword & sorcery miniatures. For things like robots, scenery and such, I use matte finish. I really do want to see your Powerwagon ambulance when it's done.
I think the matte finish looks a bit better than the satin one. For a military vehicle i would prefer the matte finish too.
They both turned out great. I like that casting. For a cheap HUMVEE, it has a decent amount of detail.
Matte, hands down. I bet a bit of baby powder might bring it down some more.
It's always worked on bigger projects I've done.

Satin will be great for "classic" stockers, when shinny paint meant one Saturday a month with some paste wax. 1950's thru 1990's there was no shine except a pasty shine. On the East Coast, staring in the 80's there was Acid Rain that stripped your car to bare metal in just a few years - unless garaged. Oh and the "peal off as you drive" clear coats painted over most of the cars at the factory. Fun times...
When I saw those rims on the HUMVEES, I had to laugh. I once saw an H-1 with low profile tires and not just chrome rims, but SPINNERS! It looked absolutely ridiculous. Forget off-roading--that thing couldn't handle a pothole.
Dude...that looks great in Matte! The satin is nice but I think satin would be for any raw metals like bumpers or guns on a military fleet.
Matte black for tonneau covers or old rag tops. I think it would make a very nice touch

Love the product review. MASH is a great idea. Haven’t done it yet. No white toner. The crosses are not a problem. It’s the white lettering I can’t do. Really looking forward to the finish vehicles.

I like the matte finish. You are doing a great job, keep it up. How about a camouflage paint lay-out for one of the Hummers? I think it would look good.

I like the matte . Maybe satin on the hood and sides matte for the cloth top

Thanks for the video. I paint mostly model trains and have been looking for a replacement for the discontinued testers acrilic dull coat so will give this a try. I will put on the flat coat with my airbrush a foot away after the first sealer coat so the paint will dry as it hits the Locomotive giving it a faded or weather look then add my weathering colors after. Will have to try out this creative matt and see how it works.
great video! a mate of mine has a '32 Ford coup rod which is high gloss black with matte black flames. awesome car. The military vehicles of ww2 were mostly satin finish which dulled off to matte, due to weather and use, fairly quickly. this is also true of the RAF fighters. cheers, mate.
All joking around aside.Thank you for the link and information on this paint line. Knew of it but have never used it. So it is a water base polyurethane, assuming here that's it's a water clean up on the airbrush. Long time user of water base paint for plastic/multimedia scale models. So information on this product line is golden.
You have put a lot of good how-to's in your videos. I goof around in my comments a bit but really taking a good look at what you do in these videos. Actually working on my first diecast dismemberment and reanimation into something better or mediocre, either way, GleegGleegGleeg.....

I think satin clear coat would be good to be used on candy paints, it also has a shinier look than matte. As for the Mate Clear it did give it a nice finish on the humve I think this Mate Clear could be used for interior parts of the models, also if you would put a soldier Jimmy next to the Humve it would look awesome or make some sore of a military diorama. Thanks for your tips and videos.
I want to begin the adventure with diecast refinishing and customizing and I want to learn the basics using rattlecans before I get a compressor. Could buy only one can of clearcoat and decided to go with matt one. Will soon test it on my first test run project.
I think that satin look's nicer, but for military projects matte is better choice.
How about two toning the matte and satin on the Humvee to show the difference between the body and the canvas top?

For humvees, you want as flat as you can get. The actual coating is CARC. Chemical Agent Resistant Coating. The closest color in all of modeling works I have found is AK real colors CARC Tan. Or nato green. With no clear coat. For my models.
Your matte humvees you have here, the matte looks more realistic.
For the MASH vehicle, go with the satin probably for the time period. Humvee and MASH vehicles were painted and finished differently. So a little more shine on the MASH vehicle probably look better.

That matte looks great for military vehicles. For that M.A.S.H. Dodge Power Wagon ambulance I'd go with a darker green to look right. Do they also have a gloss in this?
Both the matte and satin will have their uses for you. Mod Podge comes in these same types used for crafting.
Had you a Major Payne moment there with the My little Brussel sprouts. Nice tie in with the military vehicles.
To see if the green is the right shade I suggest you paint a white Z on it put it out on your back lawn. If the Ukrainian's don't blow it up with a drone bomb - you are good. Matte all the way for the Humvee.
I have a couple of these hummers, converted one with an enclosed twin machine gun turret for gaslands, the other one is going to get militaried up at some point when i get round to it, lol. Really nice castings considering theyre cheapo.

Austin! Anytime you need to check if it's plastic or metal touch it to your nose. If it feel cold then it's metal. Try it. You'll see.

I would definitely go with matte finish for the MASH vehicle. I know it seems somewhat drab but, that's the Army for ya. I'm quite sure a man of your talent will "jazz" it up a little with decals, details and whatnot and I'm sure it will turn out great. Please keep bringing us the good stuff, I always watch your vids and slobber with envy but, alas I have no artistic talent at all. I also have a wife that thinks I'm crazy for wanting to do this sort of thing so I will get no monetary support from there. It's OK. Stay well my You Tube friend!!!

I dont know if you have done it before but could you do maybe a tutorial for those of us trying to airbrush? Like what psi you are running and how to properly mix paints and reducers and clears? I've had some good luck with createx and some not so good. Thank you!
I would definitely go with the matte clear. Military vehicles aren't supposed to have any kind of shine to them at all.
I would say matte. The matter the better for military I say
I love stripping paint off and finding all the detail in the castings. Shame it's usually covered with 1/8 inch of paint

Both look good, but for the MASH project, I would go with the matte finish. Keep up the great work.
All in all, looks and seems like a great product. I want to try createx on some of my car models. Maybe I'll try this clear in gloss when I do.
I've also got some hot wheels planned so I'll try createx on those as well.

Can You do one of those Hummers and apply the matte to the "canvas parts" masking off the rest, then apply the satin to the "metal panels", You know what i mean?
..maybe you can do up those humvee's to look like the ones on Generation Kill ? (..it was an HBO miniseries)

Matt definitely, the semi gloss is too shiny for a military finish
I used the matte on a resin model that I've painted and mine came out with a gloss finish. Idk how , it kinda put it on hold till I figure how to get it unglossy!

from my time with german army, the nato olive green seemed to have had a finish between matte and satin. it probably comes with the scale... here is an experiment: 2/3 matte and 1/3 satin, and see if the utterly matte finish might gain a hint of gloss, like matte car paint that slowly becomes semi-gloss from weathering?
but really, the matte seems to fit the theme better.

couple of brain-farts: 1)would a 3d printed base be sturdy enough to use as new base? Allowing for custom ride height. 2) is it posible to tint the sealer coat to start to get closer to final color with less color coats? thanks for the content
The sealers actually come in about 12 colors, for example you could use a blue sealer and put red candy on top for a crazy effect. You can mix and match the colors like paint. And yea I'd 3d print a new based they'd be plenty strong.
What do you do with left over paint? I suppose you don't use as much as you mix.

Just getting into airbrushing thanks to your videos. Quick question, how durable are Createx clears for custom diecast? I've seen you use 2K urethane AC-385 clearcoat before which sounds more durable but it isn't for sale where I am.
You won't get the same kind of shine with a hard finish out of those Createx clears. All 2k urethanes are pretty well the same, you should be able to find something, brand doesn't matter.
Howdy, Great video! I have a technical question. I watched Chris's video on that UV product. He said no smaller than a .5 needle, did you just reduce it more to make it work on a .35 or .3? Or are you using a .5? Thank you!
Yea is just reduce a bit more and run the 0.35mm seemed to spray pretty decent. Was hr talking about air brushes on the video? Usually the instruction is for full size paint guns. I don't recall but it's something to watch for.

Have you ever thought about using a gram scale when mixing your paints to keep a log of how you made them? That way you could duplicate your colors accurately.
Example; the colors you mixed today would be X grams of green mixed with Y grams of black as weighed on the scale.
