The E-bike is NOT a toy. It helps a lot of elderly people in the Netherlands to remain mobile and exercise to stay healthy. It is true that a young, healthy person don´t need one in flat terrain. It is useful when you have to climb a gradient.
it's a valid reaction, but I converted an existing bike to an ebike and ride it much more than I used to as a "regular" bike. I also commute to work as often as possible. I give it full throttle and pedal all the way and get quite a bit of excercise, plus I'm saving gas money and helping the environment. You really do get a lot more excercise than you'd think!
I like the idea of pedaling to help push you along. Seems to be good for places that have a lot of hills and are so hard to climb, one would sweat so much, it would be bad to transition to work in an office setting.
it rains a lot here, so my motor did eventually rust and needed to be replaced (around $300), but that's still pretty minor compared to what I used to spend maintaining my cars/motorcycles. My electric bike actually got me into far better cycling shape than when I just rode my road bike, because I started riding _everywhere_ instead of taking the bus/motorcycle, and cycling a few days a week. Now I mostly ride it in crap weather, and ride my road bike when it's nice.
Electric pedal assisted bikes are great commuters. You can get to work without arriving a sweaty mess. You can go twice as far while pedaling and maintain a much higher average speed. I'm 50 now and my pedelec bike makes me feel like it used to ride twenty five years ago. While pedaling the whole time you can nearly double the power and range.
It costed me about $1000 to convert my Gary Fisher mountain bike. It's a 1000W motor with a 48v 20ah LiFePO4 battery from golden oasis. With pedaling (which I always do) I can max it around 35 mph and thanks to the motor I can maintain a 30+ mph speed to work and back. Pretty awesome.
Amazing! Not ONE time I have seen this lady making ANY attempt letting other road users know that she was making a turn. Guess that is the modern way of using the roads, who cares about others as long as I am ok. Price for such a simple bike is crazy too
You're right, I went back and they clearly assembled them on the wrong side. The wording is upside down. Easy fix, and I think I could enjoy this ride. I'd pedal in the beginning and then switch over to electric when I got tired.
As a cyclist I can't help but ask what the hell is the point. I can get an actual Road bike that can go faster under my own power for 1/4 of the price. I can also get a decent used motorcycle that hits speeds of 100+ on craigslist for that price or less. So this is pointless innovation. Its not clean energy unless the electricity provided for charging is from solar or wind.
Listen to her opening comments. "I have had a couple million dollars of cycles in and out of my driveway over the last three years. My neighbors are a little jaded and it takes something special to get their attention...and this was it." Are you kidding me? They were all laughing their asses off when they saw you in your leathers on a circus bike.
I like the fact that there is another idea out there for bicycles. Is this bike lockable through the frame? is there a quieter version? What does it weigh?
Originally the modern bicycle (from the late 19th century) was not designed for exercise or for sport. It was designed for personal transportation as a replacement for a horse which has to be fed, needs a stall or barn and is messy (poop). It's really a mechanical horse much as an automobile is a horseless carriage. One can utilize an electric bike for exercise too though.Makes it easier to climb hills or to carry extra cargo or pull a heavy loaded trailer.
That throttle mounted backwards is kind of a bodge. That's a standard electric bike throttle which is meant to go on the right side with the thumb down, as you would expect it to be. They obviously elected to put it on the opposite side in order to mount the control for the nuvinci CVT hub in the standard position. I think I would either mount the shifter knob upside down on the left bar, and put the thumb shifter in the standard position.
It's a convention on motorbikes that the right hand controls the FRONT brake and the throttle. Why not have it that way around? It makes more sense and then that thumb-throttle thingy would be in a better place. As for the batteries? It seem that their location, ie: lower down, has been sacrificed for aesthetics.
As if $2500 (£1500) isnt a lot of money - its a ridiculous amount of money for a bike with an electric motor. Bike - £100 Electric motor £50 Total £150 There is NO reason why a mass produced electric bike can not be produced for £150 $250 other than greed. In UK I could buy a used car for £500, I could buy THREE used cars for the price of that bike with an electric motor. Its just not viable for most people.
Interesting bike....though Susan looks more like an older Tidalforce 750X rider, or a current Stealth Bomber, or USA Optibike MB ebiker. Great job Susan....keep up your reporting.
Looks like you have the throttle on the wrong side. That's why the text is facing away from you and you have to try push it wrong. Try change it to the right handlebar and that should fix it...
If you're already a hardcore cyclist who rides everywhere they go, that's cool. You probably won't gain much from getting an electric. Honestly, if I didn't already have one, I probably wouldn't bother now that I'm in decent shape and can do a hilly 30km ride on my road bike to visit friends on a whim, but a the time I bought it, it allowed me to use my bike for things that I never would have otherwise. I think it was money well spent.
And the brake levers - left should work the rear brake, right the front brake. My guess is they've put the controls, or even the whole bars, back-to-front on this test bike.
It does have a nuvinci hub, and good lithium batteries can be expensive, but I expect you're paying a good chunk of money for the artsy looking frame. To be fair, if this enables you to use a bicycle as your primary vehicle in place of a car, it won't take long for it to pay for itself. I've built up my own (better) electric bike from parts, and put about 10000km on it in the first year.
So do you prefer a regular fuel burning vehicle or an almost green or at least greener option? Why don't spend some of this energy in creating ANYTHING instead of giving up, just because our neighbors don't care about something silly as recycling?
I can imagine riding a bike in very cold weather. I live in WA state and have ridden my bike in cold weather. They make studded bike tires for winter use. A google search for "bicycle canada winter" lead me to a youtube video of a woman showing off her winter bike and clothing. For the desert it's just a matter of the right clothing and proper hydration. I just found a group that does mountain biking in the Sonoran desert. Climate isn't as big of an issue as some might think.
My big issue is that it's trying to reinvent the bicycle. There is nothing wrong with the classic pedal powered safety bicycle. The only thing this has going for it is the motor to help you go up steep hills. If you get into shape and have a low enough gear, you don't need a motor. If you absolutely need a motor get an electric motor for a regular bike. Also, this looks like it doesn't have any options for carrying stuff. Since it has an odd frame, you can't stick a rack on the back.
I suspect that whoever assembled your bike did so incorrectly. The throttle unit shown at 2:45 on the left hand side of your bars has the words and the thumb control upside down. Would solve your problem to switch sides with gear selector and throttle. And make the words readable. :) Thanks for the review though.
Susan, could you please explain why did you test an electrical bike and you were NOT using the pedals? Your kind of reportage didn't make any good to the product you were testing :-((
... a little worried about the brakes? Those were Avid CODE hydraulic brakes if I'm not mistaken. I'm pretty sure DH riders wouldn't be using them if they seemed worrisome.
At first i think it was nice then heard the charge-able batery can it be that magnet wheel and with a direct connection with the old small dynamo system that was used to give light at night-time can this has a potesial avoiding of using batery? Theory: of None batery el-bikes just a direct connection to the dynamo?
Nobody thinks too much of after after care when buying these things. For instance, how do you replace the battery built in the back bone of this bike after 2-3 years once the lipo has packed in?
I am not against large trucks for transporting goods, provided they are powered by an alternative fuel. What I am against is motor vehicles for PERSONAL transportation. If you need to move your self and your stuff, it can be done by bike. Most if not all of the petroleum products I use could be made out of hemp or other renewable sources. Ford once made a car with a body made of bio plastic, made from soy if I remember right. I try to avoid petroleum products, but it's hard to do that 100%.
When you steer right, you should have your left (outside pedal) down. Turning with the inside pedal down, you're gonna strike the pavement sooner or later and the result won't be pretty
I have seen examples of human powered snow vehicles. I don't know how well they work. But I am sure a practical human powered snow mobile could be done. 50% of the people of Copenhagen ride bikes. They recently added a bike trail for commuters because the mayor (who is car free) decided that 50% wasn't good enough. The Netherlands is another great example of the practically of bikes. We just need the right infrastructure and mind set in the US.
well an engine can be any internal combustion so diesel, propane, steam, nitro whatever else there is. those are all engines. im not trying to start a war in anyway i just wanted to say clarify that lol
Damn it! Another bike without a suspension that costs about as much as passable used car. Yes. I want a bike with out a suspension because those are excellent for real exercise and there is just so much else NOT to break or wear out.
Yes, I was referring to the top comment that said the same thing. However, the more I think about this bike, the more I can't understand how the steering works... That might be an even bigger mystery.
Thank you very much Susan for your video, have you any informations about the "Pedelec" Beach Cruiser Beast 250 from SFM Bikes ? My best regards from the South of France !
The throttle goes on the right side and the gears on the left. That is why the power is written upside down and throttle feels awkward.Assembly not correct.
@warpedapple Yup it was supposed to be on the right hand side. Someone needs a lesson in following instructions. Mind you for $2500 I'd rather buy the batteries and make an enclosed recombinant trike, with pedal assist, and add some suspension to it for better handling. I bet you can't even pull the old batteries out when they die on that arch bike. Planned Obsolescence strikes again.
@Zoza15 Neither do we in the U.S. I don't know where the hell she's from...? I ride 150 miles a week, and I have NEVER seen that contraption on the road.
For does who don't know, the brakes on the bike are avid Codes, they're stupidly powerful since they were designed for gravity oriented off-road riding(more commonly known as DH). She was worried about the brakes? haha
Your body is still the biggest effect on the centre of mass, making it higher than the frame of the bike, therefore making the bike heavier LOWERS the centre of mass, as you're adding weight to below the original centre of mass.
bike is fine if you a) have tons of winter clothes, b) don't ride very far (not riding 10km in -30C, no thx!), c) have clean roads (that seems to be the biggest problem here - they never clean roads enough in winter, it's just compressed snow, which means you need special winter wheels for the bike to begin with..), d) have where to put your bike when you arrive to your destination (again - we seem to have more parking space for cars then places to put bikes). so it's really not an option..
Alright you have a valid point. However, the luxuries that a car provides has set its roots too deep. All that we can do now is to make a more energy efficient car. Also, human powered vehicles are only as efficient as the process used to create the food we eat. For longer distances, it is actually more efficient to use some sort of electric assist.
i was going to ask, "if you're hot why the hell are you wearing leather?" but you do look good! with the batteries so high, should we be concerned about ovarian or testicular cancer?
About the price of a used car currently, and it looks like they've changed a few things since the vid. Definitely going to grab me one of these (once I have the extra cash)!
Going to try riding in the winter this year, I live in Canada. Actually a woman I know rides all year long. More worried more about road salt than snow or cold, as you can dress for the weather (perhaps some heated gloves?). Of course, this isn't for everyone and I understand why most would opt for a car with all the nice climate control features.
The point of a bike is to get from point a to b. Bicycles are way to efficient to be real effective for weight loss. You have to go too far and too long. A resistance stationary bike is better for that.
When I beat a 22% (only on a very short run), I feel like a winner. Yes I always run a long road bike ladden with 50lb or more. But do not bull-shit me. I climbed the Ventoux in Provence on a 60lb bike.I was passed by racers, but who cares. I made it.
Any sort of car regardless of what kind of fuel you use will be less energy efficient than a human powered vehicle. Also, cars take more resources to build than bicycles. As far as dates go, each person can have their own bike. I am sure there are plenty of people in the world that go out on a date via bicycle. Heck, you could skip the movie and have the bike ride be the date. You could bike to the park and have a pick-nick.
Nooo... She probably means that since she likes bikes allot her neighbors are so used to seeing her have expensive and extravagant bikes that it just doesn't surprise them anymore. This bike is probably very distinct from any other bike she owns, so if her neighbors see her new bike it might trigger their curiosity again.
Joke about that, I am a smoker. In between Malaucène and the top, there is about 1600 meters. Every 400m, I would stop for a smoke. People would say "you are a crazy fool". And I would answer "For every cigarette smoked on the way-up, this is less weight to bring to the top". I even went further. Okay, I shaved my armpits and pubis in order to save weight. Let's not get sick about weight.. A carbon fiber bottle holder saves about an half of an once, if not less. Go figure???
canada was just an example. i personally live in europe next to a sea where climate is much more humid. and trust me, you CANT ride a bike in -30C (-22F) in humid climate. you can't even start a car in that weather. you can't even feel your feet! and don't even get me started on snowstorms - riding a bike in that weather is a perfect way to die. we NEED more protection from the elements then a bike can ever provide. we're not living middleages you know, i can't ride a horse-drawn carriage.
Single spine mountain bike frame. $300 ATB running gear (crankset-wheels-chain-etc). $150 Hydraulic disc brakes. $150 Electric front wheel, control unit and batteries. $350 For sale $2,500? We're in the wrong game lads.
you didn't listen. She said she's had a couple of million dollars worth of vehicles in her driveway. Like this bike at $2500. She tests vehicles for a living. 40 X $50 K and you're there too.
I can get or make something a little more effective or customized for less money. With light suspension and comfort which is more than what this bike has.
The E-bike is NOT a toy. It helps a lot of elderly people in the Netherlands to remain mobile and exercise to stay healthy. It is true that a young, healthy person don´t need one in flat terrain. It is useful when you have to climb a gradient.

would rather spend 2 times less on a hell of a road bike than this piece of non-sense
it rains a lot here, so my motor did eventually rust and needed to be replaced (around $300), but that's still pretty minor compared to what I used to spend maintaining my cars/motorcycles.

pneumatic tires and seat springs and cushions make 'rigid' bikes less rigid. Neat bike; thanks for posting on youtube.
Sooo easy to steal, you only can lock it through the tires, right??
When are we going to have a bike that gets charged by pedaling?
Stop signs don't apply to electric bikes? 0:21
Listen to her opening comments. "I have had a couple million dollars of cycles in and out of my driveway over the last three years. Totally agree Kent. My brain wouldn't work fast enough to change my old motorcyling reactions. Hit the wrong brake and ooher missus.
As if $2500 (£1500) isnt a lot of money - its a ridiculous amount of money for a bike with an electric motor.
Bike - £100

In UK I could buy a used car for £500, I could buy THREE used cars for the price of that bike with an electric motor.
Its just not viable for most people.
Bought registered and insured a car for 2200 dollars
No reason this pedal powered 5mph less than the speed limit "thing" costs so much
Interesting bike....though Susan looks more like an older Tidalforce 750X rider, or a current Stealth Bomber, or USA Optibike MB ebiker.
Great job Susan....keep up your reporting.
@3:00 Notice how it's "upside-down". Simply place it on the right handle, "right-side up" and the throttle lever will be just how you like it.
Looks like you have the throttle on the wrong side. That's why the text is facing away from you and you have to try push it wrong. Try change it to the right handlebar and that should fix it...

the bar gear is installed wrong; thumb throttle should either be on the right or rotated. Legs are suspension.
And the brake levers - left should work the rear brake, right the front brake. My guess is they've put the controls, or even the whole bars, back-to-front on this test bike.
By Swedish rules it is considered a motorbike/moped if you don't need to pedal.
Where is the line drawn in the US? Doesn't seem to be one
You know what's more eco-friendly than an electric bicycle? A bicycle.
Because last I checked?
JC Witt Sold a sixty amp Solar pannel,
That could mount and charge wile you ride.
Hey Susan...nice ride. How about a current review on the Picycle, as no doubt it's evolved the last two years, with a correct thumb throttle?
That's the loudest freewheel i've ever heard in my life.
Lmao she straight ran that stop sign.
So do you prefer a regular fuel burning vehicle or an almost green or at least greener option? Why don't spend some of this energy in creating ANYTHING instead of giving up, just because our neighbors don't care about something silly as recycling?

Handlebars are on the wrong way round. Explains the backwards brakes and upside down throttle.

The throttle goes on the right side and the gears on the left. That is why the power is written upside down and throttle feels awkward.Assembly not correct.
@rbuss1956 All bicycles have their brakes oriented in this fashion. The throttle is just a fuckup.
She just blew through that stop sign! ticket for you!
@warpedapple Yup it was supposed to be on the right hand side. Someone needs a lesson in following instructions. is that a hose clamp for a ring at 3:09.. My kinda lady
2:40 thats a real bike! thumbs up?
Nice looking bike, and rider.
Has this progressed much since 2009, ie Suspension ?

She didn't make it stupid, she bought it. She's reviewing it.
Can I have one in naked carbon fiber ( green dye added to resin) with lots of titanium tidbits?

Umm, the throttle is mounted up-side-down. Look at the labeling, DUH.
The throttle was awkward because it's upside down, you didn't notice the wording?
Nooo... She probably means that since she likes bikes allot her neighbors are so used to seeing her have expensive and extravagant bikes that it just doesn't surprise them anymore. This bike is probably very distinct from any other bike she owns, so if her neighbors see her new bike it might trigger their curiosity again.
Your thumb should be there cause it's mounted on the wrong side, upside down, you know the writings on it? Yea, they should be readable by you
Haha! The throttle is installed upside down on the wrong side! That's why it seems so un-ergonomic. Look at the lettering on the assembly! 2:43
Go figure???
she looks and sounds thrilled to do this story. hahaha
@warpedapple hahaha. Yea it definitely looks like it was supposed to be installed on the right side. Maybe shes left handed so they put it over there.
canada was just an example. i personally live in europe next to a sea where climate is much more humid. and trust me, you CANT ride a bike in -30C (-22F) in humid climate. you can't even start a car in that weather. you can't even feel your feet! and don't even get me started on snowstorms - riding a bike in that weather is a perfect way to die. we NEED more protection from the elements then a bike can ever provide. we're not living middleages you know, i can't ride a horse-drawn carriage.

We're in the wrong game lads.
How far can it drop off?
Yes, and now it comes with air conditioning, a heated seat and quad sound?.. and what about, 'the little red button'?
you didn't listen. She said she's had a couple of million dollars worth of vehicles in her driveway. Like this bike at $2500. She tests vehicles for a living. 40 X $50 K and you're there too.
I can get or make something a little more effective or customized for less money. With light suspension and comfort which is more than what this bike has.
