Oh !! the kicker the employer pays your tuition. So it’s debt free. 1st Class training. They have Lowest Student teacher ratio in the country. 1:5
Just gotta keep practicing man and find out what works for you. Some people weld hot as hell, while others like it a little colder so they can take their time and control the weld more. Try turning your amps down a little and adjusting your heat with your arc length. Inevitably you want to learn to weld hot...if it's hot there is nothing negative living in it bro. Burn and learn!
this is how I was taught in 1976 and it worked well for me my whole life and i still love to hear that sound and watch THE RED LINE !

This is how I learned. For plate was taught 8th in land and gap. Was having issues with pen on bottom. Switched to this method and all was lovely

Switch to AC current, slap in some 6011, keep on welding. ( while nobody is looking) Takes care of that magnetism.
Wrap it with bare copper lead and ground to that
6010 easy rod for beginner's
