To have an employer who is willing to offer 100 hours of overtime in a month to get an employee out of a bind
Priceless 🧡
That's huge. My employer would probably let me do the same in a month. Years ago, some employees worked 14 hours per day for 5-6 days per week, before they capped working hours at 12 hours per day.
No doubt!!! This man is incredible and amazing! He is a real deal...
It's called being a workaholic and it'll get the employee killed. It's ok in the short-term but it's not sustainable for the longer term.
How underpaid were these people at their regular wage?
@@BoBandits if you've watched this channel at all
You know he pays well for the region and position.
I went from a job that paid very well with lots of mandatory overtime and travel to a job that paid half of my former wages and little overtime. The reason- I became a father. I made less money but I was able to coach all my kids in every sport they played. I was there for every game, sport, concert, teacher/parent conference, etc. That was my choice and I am happy with my decision. I’m much poorer than my former coworkers who chased that overtime job. I was part of my kids lives from the cradle until they graduated from university. And just a couple of years ago my son and his gracious wife asked me to come live with them on their farm in a small apartment next to their home. I have grandchildren, dogs and home cooking every day. My porch has a swing for my granddaughter to use when she stops by to visit me and talk about fairies. I watch my grandson after school while he does his homework. Life is full of choices. I’ll take family over money any time.
You put in the extra time, it was for family instead of the day job. Lazy people who don't want to work drive me nuts, but a parent willing to sacrifice for quality family time gets my respect.
@@lynnebucher6537not wanting to work doesn't make one lazy. What makes one lazy is being unwilling to do the necessary work to live; there's a fundamental difference. Plenty of people don't like to work or like their job, but they do it and put in the time because they understand the need.
What a wonderful testament to good decion making and the blessings thereof.
I am so happy for you and thank you for sharing.
@@lynnebucher6537 You chose...wisely!
I would be appalled if I offered someone basically $40 bucks an hour to do some grunt work, and they said they wanted something easier. It's a good thing you're so reasonable.
grunt work is probably the easiest thing in a job like that.
I don't touch a single tool I own for less than $60 per hour. Get real. I've got 25 years of experience, 50k in tools, and a truck that cost 70k new. Yall just better get used to paying more and more. It isn't our fault the government can't stop spending money. I vote conservative republican. I didn't do this, democrats did.
@@Aqsticgodyou've obviously never worked a day of labor in your life.
@MrCard031584 OH please stop with the politics. Republicans have been side by side with Democrats denigrating construction workers for the last 50 years. Republicans don't have any proposals to put shop class in schools and take out sports to pay for it.
It's laughable for anyone to take the high ground on our shortage of construction workers and claim "their" party isn't the problem.
@@MrCard031584 no you and your low rate work at 60 an hour don't know what he's talking about.
Taking care of the road, cleaning the trucks and washing hoses is easier than a pump out job.
Employees are more comfortable doing the same thing they do every day so they aren't responsible for something they haven't do e before.
It’s nice to see a boss that knows how to math
especially when it's in scientific notation
It’s what every business owner needs to survive tbh :)
Well he is taking a calculus class......
😂
At least he can count his wives.
I had a colleague years ago always doing the 37 hours, going home on time every day, and complaining about paying child support and how he didn't have any money. Our manager at the time told him he was free to do all the overtime he wanted as long as there was things to do, there always were. They sat down and calculated how much he would have to work to be able to pay of the debt, it was something like an hour a day 4 days a week would take of it within a year or two, vs 5-6 years at his current rate of paying off the debt. It lasted for about a month, then he was back to only 37 hours a week.
And ya know good on him, he sat down and did the math and tried doing the extra work. Found out it wasn't for him or wasn't something he'd be willing to stick with the amount of time it takes to pay that off.
The crooks at Child support upped his payments probably
The worst thing you could do is make a bunch of overtime then have your child support reassessed with the overtime included and then have the overtime forcibly removed. I worked with a guy who made $2.33 and hour for 4 years until his next assessment.
Well you see it doesn't matter how much overtime you work. If your ex finds out you are making that much more the ex will want her cut of it. Then you are stuck working more and still not having enough.
Dummy while on child support the more u make the more they take. My exwife tried 6 times to get more. once i worked on her car at a buddys shop the twat told CS i worked there. If youre sick and miss 3 days doesns't matter the full amount still comes out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Offering to send your brother with him and the guy going into Panic Mode.... We need to meet your brother. He sounds like a total blast to be around! Please James, make this happen. 😂🎉
Probably looks like Jack Smith, 😂
You don’t meet his brother his brother meets you
For years I was the guy who took as many hours as I could, until suddenly my oldest daughter is in college, my middle son is in high school, and my youngest son is seven, and I realized I've lost a lot of that time with them. Now I go home at the end of the day.
True story: I was a driller in the oilfield and had an opportunity to go overseas to Saudi Arabia. I could work for 6 months, come home and get paid for the full year. I was selling the idea to my wife. We had 3 small boys and the middle one was in my lap. My wife told me to hug the boy and then called my toddler to "give daddy a hug". While I was doing so she said, "He will be the older one's size when I got back!"...only argument that I was happy about losing.
This comment is BY FAR worth acknowledging 😊❤️
@@smigletat9634 Thank you.
@@innapinch7112 absolutely my man👊🏻
I recently heard the saying "5 years from now the only people that will remember you put in overtime will be your kids".
Long as I’m being paid a good amount for overtime, I’ll work however long as it takes. Somebody has to be on shit detail
Eeyup. I was bitchboy at one job. It's the job of bitchboy to be on shit detail.
Shit details keep you employed
I'll gladly shovel shit in the summer sun for what I make in OT. Since nobody else wants to do it, I can get the work done at my own pace. I'm not working myself into an injury
And remember his recent video was about having a use for a gopher employee for just those kind of things.
That's what I'm saying. At the company I work for the 7th day of the pay period is double time if you worked the other 6 days. You bet your ass I'm there 7 days to get that double time day. I may not be working full shifts but I'm at least present all 7 days.
My bill collectors want me to work 80 hrs a week, but my body wants me to work 20 hours a week. So I split the difference and aim for 50.
I can't tell you the number of times I would have loved to have a boss willing to send someone like James's brother along with me to make sure everything was ok. what a mensch.
No kidding! I had a couple of bullying ex boyfriends where I would have been on a much more even playing ground had I had a fierce guy or two in my corner.
The fact that he was comfortable enough to come to you shows the support your employees have from you and that is amazing. I love that you’re straightforward but caring.
Over a 30 year career, I have learned there needs to be a balance between OT and life. Mama likes the nice things, but she likes me around. I love my job. I also love the wife. So sacrifices need to be made at both ends. If I had the ability to go to my boss like he did and was offered the hours needed to fix my problem, I would have danced out of the office. Those jobs you mentioned? All over it. There's no such thing as "shit work" when you're getting paid $37/hrs to do it. How does he not see that? As for cleaning trucks and hoses, that's part of maintaining my equipment. If you want to pay me OT at the end of the day to do it, that would become part of my day. Hope he works it out. It also builds character.
$37/hr used to be amazing money back in the day, but with inflation the way it is, it'll be the same as $15 about 8 years from now. However...doing the grunt work for time and a half until extra jobs open up is an amazing opportunity.
Yeah there needs to be a balance for sure. But when I was a college girl running all out to get a degree with no debt, that $45 OT rate was just to good to pass.
Was probably kind of stupid being a full time student, but it was always there and so was I!
After going through reorganizations every few years in an international company and seeing people leaving with two weeks notice without the world ending, yeah, work life balance is a must. If you die on the job due to working too much, the company won't be shedding a tear. Not being for the children is also bad, because they're the ones picking your facility when you're too old.
The only kind of work I might balk at is if I had to clean up fresh and aged dog poop in the confined space of a doghouse just big enough to crawl around on your hands and knees. I did this, about 16-17 years ago, and nearly vomited cuz of the smell. Other than that, no job is crud work to me; only if I have to come in on my vacation to make up time that I didn't have to use, now that's crud work: when you're expecting to get stuff done at home and you have to come into work when you shouldn't have had to. What a long day that was!
@@pathfinderlightplease tell me youre exaggerating. 37 an hour is good money even in the middle of a city.
To the employee.... I hope you realize how blessed you are to have James as an employer.
I had to work tons of OT as an ICU nurse. Most hospitals budget for average census, not full census. Not only ICU, but I had experience in ER and in recovery room. Throughout my life, I took so much call I lost count. I loved it, if for no other reason than it allowed me to provide gifts to my nieces and nephews. Needless to say, covid also played havoc with staffing. On top of it, nurses getting covid decimated available staff. I finally had to go on disability because it seriously impacted my health. Work life balance is important but I learned that too late. If you want OT, you need to work. Reality. But too much OT can be detrimental also.
For real. If my work just said no problem when I needed overtime and they would find me something to do to get that overtime. I’d show up with a smile on my face every day. I think maybe some of your employees take for granted working for a good company
Were you not listening at all? Sounds like they appreciate the hell out of it
Definitely take for granted.

In the end he appreciated it. You don't get to pick and choose your overtime jobs
One of my father's favorite sayings was "common sense isn't common". You sir, are just overflowing with common sense and you have a wonderful gift of packaging that common sense into a wonderful story.
And you have to work 100 hours in construction to make enough that your gross pay would equal your one-bedroom rent. The common sense is, if you're not going to allow someone to work hard and earn things along the way, why bother trying? The reality is, there's way more life rewards found on a video game. Live cheap, enjoy the inexpensive virtual world.
Everyone needs a boss like you. A boss who treats his employees like people and who will go that extra mile to help the people who work for him.
James always in some way inspires me to do better. Love this guy and his content. What a boss to have. He's in your corner.
Every employer I’ve ever worked for has not wanted their employees to work overtime. I guess they don’t want to pay the extra money 🤷♂️
You’re the first employer I’ve heard who actually encourages it. Great video 👍
It all depends on the math. Some employers would rather pay overtime for fewer employees than pay the extra benefits for more employees. It all depends on the company, the size of the company, and the regulations that apply to that company.
Dependa can you hire another part timer to push those carts in no issue or is it almost impossible to get a guy to suck shit out of the ground that make ya a ton of money
Most small business prefer OT, due to the fact that it is WAY cheaper than hiring and training new employees, but there is also an equation that can be used in this situation, for every 8hrs of OT worked you typically lose 25% efficiency, which is why some companies don't like OT due to the lowered efficacy of staff.
Depends on the industry, company, regulations...
I'm having a bad week if I'm not hitting OT by Friday.
If you have a surplus of work for your employees, you have 2 options. Hire more people or pay overtime. Hiring is the more expensive route. Overtime for the employees isn't worth the extra work until it reaches an extra 16 hours per week due to the taxation on overtime from the Feds on the worker. The taxation rate remains the same for the employer. Employees first 8 hours of OT is fully eaten up by taxes, it royally sucks ass.
I used to average 56 hours weekly working as a machinist, once the Taxman got his 20 pounds of flesh out of it I had some decent extra green in my pocket.
Got to 7 minutes in to the video, where you were mentioning the chores and was a little shocked by their reaction! Dude, if you'd offered me that as an option, and it's just doing cleaning, the maintenance stuff that doesn't get done? Yeah, I would have been ready to pounce on that, and that's even without being in a situation like what they were in!
Same. Sounds like a decent gig actually.
No kidding. Easy work.

As someone involved in speech and debate, I have to say, this was a really well-written speech, and even more importantly, really well memorized. If it were a bit more naturally delivered, I might not even be convinced that it was a written speech. Well done sir, a lot of youtubers can learn from this. Also, I know sometimes I focus on the method of delivery, rather than the message, so let me add that it was also an exceptional message.
I script all my videos for the last 3 months. Thank you for noticing

@@crweirdo8961One way is the amount of um's and uh's that someone does. If it was based off of his memory, it'd be more so. He may have a script like news channels do but he only has to write to out the encounter and memorize the script. It helps that he personally experienced it.

I wholeheartedly appreciate how you posed the solution without impacting the other employees pay. That shows you are a leader, and not "the boss." You're the kind of person someone will stay with when a competitor comes to offer them more money.
Also, can we all just appreciate the quality of the line "something more fun, not the shit jobs" given the line of work 😂
Yeah, that "shit jobs" line had me dying for the same reason.
I'm one of those people who strive on controlled chaos and will work through lunch and 16+ hours a day to stay busy because I hate not being busy. When I slow down is when I feel old

@@demonknight7965 when I say work through lunch, I mean grabbing something handheld that I can eat in between. I am a busy bee and will grab something I can eat while I work. PARENTS have to teach their children the value and rewards of work.
Starting with chores when they are very young.
I always told my kids, if you aren't contributing to the work in a home, then you are a guest, not a part of the family.
Chores at home should always be a positive family participation thing, and the parents model the thankfulness to those who folded the clothes, cleaned the bath tub, vacuumed the carpet, washed the windows, etc..
Their future spouses will bless you abundantly!
This kind of community/ family environment cannot be taught at school. Teachers don't RAISE kids, they basically babysit them for parents.

I love to hear about how well you treat your employees and help them work through their problems to benefit both them and your company in the long haul
I’ve always found that, whenever possible, putting in overtime is always easier if you can put it on the front of the day. Come in an hour or two early, knock out a couple projects and tasks before regular work shift gets going, and be able to go home at your regular time feels a lot better than watching everyone clock out and then forcing yourself to stay and be productive for extra hours, knowing that you *could* be at home.
agreed. When the whole shop I work at had to go on overtime for a while to keep up with business we all chose to come in an hour and a half early and still go home at the normal time. We still get the occasional rush job that requires a later than normal day or a weekend shift but those were always one offs. Work until the job is done and go home
I always worked longer on OT, as I prefer to stay up vs getting up earlier.
OT was welcome 95% of the time. When you come to me on Friday saying I need to stay 6 hours, because somebody screwed up. That usually means the Boss screwed up.
Your wisdom is an absolute asset to humanity!
I've been blessed with a boss like you. Thank you for existing ❤
I work IT and have apprentices. Sometimes I set them to do inventory sorting and such.
They hate it because it's monotonous and they seem to think that it's a punishment.
But it's just work that has to be done, and if I had the time to do it myself I would love to do it myself, I could have zone out and listen to an audiobook or music while doing the work in peace.
If I needed 3k, I would have no problem cleaning pipes or tanks, no questions asked. Grime comes of, you just need to clean yourself afterwards.
I'm mixed. I love that overtime money. But I also really enjoy my hobbies and spending time with my kid.
It's a balancing act.
I passed this along to my young grandson. Thanks 🎉
I painted for my old septic company when they moved offices to get extra hours. I got permission to hire a friend to help with the project. This friend needed money badly, so i thought between this side work and a good impression, he might be able to pull himself out of the hole AND secure a job within the company. It took about a week, working 4-5 hours after work to get everything done. He never showed up less than an hour late, and constantly blamed his girlfriend for his lateness.
He threw away a really good chance to get a nice job at my company and ultimately our friendship as well. All because he refused to take any control over his situation. On top of that, it was embarrassing to me and hurt my reputation for a while too (turns out he was vaping weed while we were working and left a dead vape in our warehouse)
It still makes me mad as hell to think about. It's been 3 or 4 years now.
Every situation is different, but I spent a few years struggling at a job, and at life in general. Couldn't figure out why. Couldn't stay focused, couldn't get in early. Didn't feel like myself, but didn't know why. Took 2 years of bouncing between doctors to find out I had sleep apnea and hadn't gotten a real night's sleep in years.
Believe me, it's easy to want to blame the world around you when you start sucking and have no idea why. You know something is holding you back so you see obstacles everywhere.
Who knows, maybe someday your friend will find out they had something messing them up neither of you knew about. Or maybe not.

No doubt. Our society has its priorities completely screwed up.
Dude you bring a smile to my face daily that I see your videos I just want thank you for that.
A true gentleman, Bless you sir.
The respect you have for your people - no words are sufficient
I personally prefer to spend more time at a jobsite and then finish that job if I know the job can be done within a reasonable amount of time, rather than coming back in the morning. When I say 'within a reasonable amount of time' I mean coming home before dinner, not after.
Much agreed. That way tomorrow I can move on to the next job/task. Especially when it took an hour or so to setup whatever I was doing. I'd rather take the extra hour or so today than leave it for tomorrow.
Great boss providing a solution to help your employee needs!
I love your stories. You are such a good story teller
I came into work for 2 weeks with pneumonia and 100-105 degree fever, diarrhea, and nausea because we were shorthanded. After finally getting tired of feeling horrible, I went to the doctor; work called me 10 minutes after I left the ER and asked when I would be back.
Wow, please tell me you didn't. 😢
"2 weeks with pneumonia and 100-105 degree fever, diarrhea, and nausea"
Normal countries have unlimited paid sick leave (actual duration determined by the doctor).
A normal boss would preferes sick people to stay at home - simply by logic to prevent spreading the disease and prevent accidents due to exhaustion.
@@benjaminmeusburger4254 - Some jobs are horrible. Also, they don't think if you're sick and get everyone sick no one will be working.
That's the same kind of job that gives you a hard time for getting appendicitis because you didn't give them two weeks notice.
That was such a great story. Really well handled and managed.
Always a great voice of reason for advice
When I was young and full of energy I had a good job and worked all the overtime I could.I would take home 3 to 4 times my regular pay. I loved my job, my employer and the people I worked with. Not being at work was boring. 50 years later I'm gainfully retired.
I'm just shocked to be a boss who's so willing to push overtime. That money usually squeaks coming out of the boss' hands
The part where you said there s no one on the planet he would sic your brother on...Oh James did that make me laugh! Love the stories!!
❤thank you for being some overtime.
There is a need for more bosses like you. May your family time always be filled with love and incredible moments. Bless you.
I will say, James, you are a great story teller.
You're an awesome boss! Sure wish there were more like you around. Your employees, who are like your family, are very blessed to know and work for you. Keep up the great work.
Best quote I heard in HS that helped me through college and early life: "Sometimes you have to do the things you don't want to do in order to do the things that you do want to do later on."
"Actions are greater than talk". I love that. Put that on a T-shirt and bumper stickers. I'll start handing them out to all the young people nowadays. Thank you for sharing this
tell more stories about you and your brother please.
Honestly, those options of extra work ARE easier than a lot of the other options equivalent to almost $40/hr! Id love to clean the truck or spread some gravel or cut grass for 40 bucks an hour man. You really are the shining example of how an employer/employee relationship ought to be, love your videos and all the great work you guys do!
Hell I used to do it for a 700$ paycheck every 2 weeks. This is a blessing, especially in NC. He's paying double factory work with a quarter of the bs
I love your stories.
My son runs a smaller business, but does pretty much as you do. HIs employees are important, because his customers are important. Makes a dad proud.
Excellent life lesson. Thank you.
I generally liked to work OT. But, when we had kids, my wife and I worked different shifts. 8-5 for me 3-11 for her. That killed my opportunity to get extra hours. The place I worked was closed on weekends.
When the kids got older I made it work when I could.
I also pulled ours delivering pizzas for the local shop.
Being older at the time, I loved working Friday and Saturday nights. That’s when made the good tips. The HS kids never understood that.
If I worked for your company and I was in your employees' situation, I would be asking what else needs done, boss. Especially since you helped him and worked out the math.
Hell yea
Props to you for getting your employee out of a bind, via some OT. Hopefully, it is learning experience for him and his future decisions might be better.
Definitely impressed that you fronted him the $ to cover the debt, or bills to Big Tony & Vinny! Showing that level of faith in an employee can be huge as a future 'down payment' on his loyalty. It could, of course bite you in the ass, but it worked out a MAJOR win all around.
I would love to hear any future vids on employee issues, as you seem to have a real knack as a manager.
You seem like a decent employer.
I work 12 hour continental shifts. OT is available sporadically.
I’m reasonably well paid, & happy where I am.
Some people have to experience things to learn!!! Great story!😊
The company that put me out to pasture had a "Lunch break is mandatory" policy, but the manager wanted everyone to "take lunch while driving to your next call" policy. I informed her that driving to the next call is hours worked because I'm responsible for the truck and equipment. We came to the agreement that as long as I didn't tell the workers that didn't know this, I would be free to take my breaks. I hated that manager.
Yeah, it's not safe to eat while driving. That's a safety violation.
Yea, but the manager didn't care about safety violations, as long as the didn't go to corporate.

"As long as they didn't go to corporate."
...Gosh, hate for all the safety violations to end up at once in corporate's hands in some personally-deniable way.
That'd be terrible.
It's just me having a thinky thought here.

Great boss, none of those things are hard, just mind numbing.
that is a great vid. thank you
Many years ago, I actually worked my way through college by working 4 hours in the evening in the office of a family-owned trucking company. I barely made it week to week, and when I had an unexpected expense I would go in on weekends when the building was empty, punch in, and clean toilets, wash floors, etc. I didn't like things like that, but they never questioned the extra hours (it kinda showed!). When you need money and have an opportunity to earn it, even if the job is distasteful (sometimes the drivers' area was a bit filthy), you can do it. I didn't have much social life at college, but I graduated debt-free.
You can't cover the cost of college on 4 hours an evening now, but it is still possible to work your way through.
@@dustintunis9347 It was a state college at $200/semester, I rented a room in town for $5/week plus odd jobs, my main meal was in a restaurant right after they closed where I could pile a plate with anything left over for $1 (lots of pasta). Prices of everything have gone way higher than wages now.
It has been 20 years since I worked at a labor intensive job.
I am retired now, but I would gladly do those tasks for an extra 3k this month.
Could I wear cousin Eddie's bath robe and fur hat while I'm cleaning out the shitter?
🤣🤣🤣 love your style of story telling!
You have an amazing work ethic.
After doing payroll for a government entity for 14+ years, the overtime conclusion I've come to is this. I've had employees who met at least one of three criteria when it comes to overtime:: 1} they like gobs of money; 2} they were able to live and maintain a certain lifestyle that required gobs of money; and 3} they wanted a big fat pension when they retire (the incredibly short version: public pension are based on your three highest earning years).
@@matgaragepaul : I know a lot of our GOP reps in the state legislature (minority party) want to eliminate adding overtime into the final pension calculations, simply because how much money it will cost in the long run.
I've seen, no joke, government workers wind up with pensions worth more than the governor's annual salary.
@@GeorgieB1965 When someone works hard, they deserve the extra pay. I recall my father once telling me about one of the tradesman who he was the supervisor of. Because of the OT, that tradesman made more money than the top executive of the local branch of the organization. And way more than my father did!
@@e-curb Not denying that particular point, My point is that the public sector is a different animal than the private sector, thus the motivation for working overtime isn't the same.
