- HH 17th Karmapa:
The Lion Begins to Roar 1999
This is a fascinating film made just a few months before the Karmapa fled Tibet to join the Dalai Lama in India.
The film is an analogous follow-up to an earlier film about his previous reincarnation as the 16th Karmapa called “The Lion’s Roar.”
At the time of the film, the Karmapa was just 14 years old and the documentary is based around his life at the Tsurphu Monastery in 1999 just before he escaped to India.
The film includes the first recorded teaching the Karmapa gave to a group of devotees from Taiwan who were sponsoring a project to build a road to Tsurphu Monastery. It also shows rare footage of the Karmapa dancing in the traditional dances held every year at the monastery and giving Dharma transmissions.
A large section of the film focuses on the reincarnated lamas (Tulkus) he has recognized, and shows how their early development was provided for. Also seen, is the unfolding of the massive applique thangka of the Buddha during the annual festival, which takes place on a hillside nearby.
The focus of the film is certainly the Karmapa himself, who, even at 14 years of age, is destined for greatness.
