  • In this episode I am once again joined by Naomi Levine, author, under her birth name Norma Levine, of multiple books including ‘The Miraculous 16th Karmapa’, ‘A Quest For The Hidden Lands’, and ‘Chronicles of Love and Death: My Years With The Last Spiritual King of Bhutan’.
Naomi discusses her various publications about the Karmapas, focusing in particular on the lives and activities of the 16th and 17th of that line.
Naomi describes the magical powers and spiritual aura of the 16th Karmapa, recounts her own and others’ experiences of his supernatural potency, and recalls the process of compiling stories of his miraculous activities.
Naomi explores the controversies around the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje, including his recognition, escape from Tibet, interactions with the Tibetan government in exile, and various accusations in the media.
Naomi also speculates about the futures of both the Tibetan political cause and the Tibetan religious institutions after the death of the Dalai Lama.

I respect Naomi Levine (liked her book), and her devotion to her teacher is admirable. But at some point one must employ some critical thinking (not forbidden in Buddhism), as to why all these controversies around Karmapa Ogyen Trinley? Rape allegations, fraud allegations etc. Can it really all be blamed for the Chinese and Tibetan Government? Plus his own statements that he does not want to be Karmapa anymore (from NY some years ago)... maybe he was just an unfortunate ordinary child thrown into responsibilities and circumstances without his will? I guess time will show.

Absolutely. Guru Viking did a lousy job in combatting this sad little woman's fantasy about K17. Suggest GV be a little more informed when interviewing on this subject. Letting this "devotee" ramble on. Really? K17 is in hiding, just as Sogyal Lakar escaped by running to a country without extradition. The Sakyong? Were these predators really the magical beings as their worshipper believe?

It's very complicated and I try to explain it here. I can only think of the time I asked HH 17th Karmapa about the Shamar's activity and how it could be explained as bodhisattva activity. He said, 'There is an explanation but ordinary people won't be able to understand it.'

@@naomilevine2480 To me it is clear that OTD has been enthroned in order to serve the purposes of those who enthroned him. I believe him when he says he has no recollection of past lives as a Karmapa nor has he accomplished any of the achievements of the previous 16 Karmapas that he reads or hears about.. his disciples misinterpret this as humility - such a christian interpretation imo, as a Karmapa always has recollections of past lives, always accomplishes "extraordinary" skills (he mirrors every human's potential), and always has a diamond clarity about both. And it really becomes even more clear when he says "he is depressed".. If a Karmapa is depressed then what is this all about?..?🙈 I remember, after these statements made live, he met with TTD and they issued a common statement that the activity of Shamarpa has always been and always will be of the utmost importance and called ALL students to view Shamarpa's next reincarnation as the glue that will bring the lineage back together. This is what I am keeping re Shamarpa by OTD - the "'There is an explanation but ordinary people won't be able to understand it.'" is too vague, it is neither here nor there.. and of course the same can be said for Situpa etc.. this statement bears no gravity, it's a generalization that "fits all". I wish OTD the best and to recover from the immensely difficult life he was exposed to while he is clearly missing the development necessary (for such a role) from past lives. I wish for the activity to be united for the benefit of all beings.

    Very interesting indeed!
    Here a Tricycle article:
    Karmapa Case Discontinued
In the same month, a new initiative started mapping accounts of alleged abuse by the Tibetan Buddhist leader.
    By Wendy Biddlecombe Agsar
    NOV 18, 2022
According to New York State Supreme Court documents, in October 2022, former Buddhist nun Vikki Hui Xin Han voluntarily opted to discontinue what is known as a pre-action petition related to a potential civil case against Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery, the North American home of the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje, and the Karma Kagyu Institute. Han had previously alleged that the Karmapa, one of two claimants to the title of the 17th Karmapa in the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, had raped and impregnated her.
A civil case may be discontinued for a number of reasons, including a financial settlement between the parties. But the cause for the discontinuation of this action is not public, and it is not clear whether Han might later file a civil lawsuit.
Dr. Ann Olivarius, who represented Han in the proceedings, said in an email that she was “ethically barred” from commenting on the case or providing further information about the reason the action was withdrawn. Michael Murphy of Barclay Damon law firm, who represented Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery, said in an email “we will not make any comment or respond to any questions on the matter.”
In June 2022, Han filed a petition saying she intended to seek damages and was trying to determine who was financially responsible or liable for physical injuries and emotional distress resulting from the Karmapa’s alleged assault. In response, the Karmapa’s lawyers filed with the court a list of the legal names of KTD’s board of directors and primary address. The voluntary dissolution of Han’s pre-action petition in October occurred several months after this exchange.
Han first filed a lawsuit against the Karmapa in May 2021 in Canadian court. Tricycle previously reported that Han alleges the Karmapa raped her while she was a nun on retreat at Karme Ling Retreat Center in Delhi, New York, in 2017. Han said she became pregnant during the nonconsensual encounter in her bedroom. At a private audience a month later, Han told the Karmapa she was pregnant, and though he denied responsibility, he gave her his phone number and email address, and Han said the two continued to communicate as a couple in a relationship until January 2019.
In the New York State proceedings, Han’s petition, filed in March 2022, alleges that Han was raped while on a 39-month monastic retreat at Karme Ling, and that the forcible act took place in the women’s quarters, where men are not allowed. The petition noted that the Karmapa “functioned outside these rules,” and that “staff, trainee nuns, and attendees in the women’s quarters would likely have seen him enter” Han’s room.
In an affidavit included in the court file, Lama Lodro Lhamo, KTD’s president and the monastery’s retreat master, wrote, “the Petitioner has made many false, defamatory, and damaging statements about KTD, its mission, and its operations. These claims seek to jeopardize the important work and mission of KTD.”
Documents filed by Han’s attorneys also show large deposits in her bank account in 2018 totalling approximately $800,000. According to Canadian court documents, Han gave birth to a girl in June 2018, and Han told the court she had received a total of $770,000 (Canadian) for the delivery and postpartum care, the first year of the child’s life, a wedding ring for Han, and a home.
The Karmapa has not publicly addressed the accusations by Han. His office did not respond to a request for comment.
    ***
In the same month that the action was withdrawn, a new initiative, called Healing Our Sanghas, launched to address the “allegations of misconduct by the Karmapa and the silence surrounding it.” The site includes a timeline of allegations against the Karmapa and a function where practitioners can share their personal experiences, which are then mapped. The site currently includes accounts from anonymous users from around the world, including North America, Europe, southeast Asia, and Australia.
The project was initiated by a group of anonymous Karma Kagyu practitioners who partnered with Dr. Ann Gleig and Dr. Amy Langenberg, Buddhist scholars who are associated with the Religion and Sexual Abuse Project.
Gleig and Langenberg told Tricycle in a recent interview that they were approached by the group and decided to partner with them because their research “supports the aims of the project” and finds that the voices of those in embattled communities need to be amplified as a way to prevent further harm and trauma.
“We also spent a lot of time with this group of practitioners,” Langenberg said. “We did our due diligence on their motivations; it wasn’t like we just had one email exchange … we put a lot of thought and care into this.”
Gleig said that their advocacy of the project adds legitimacy to those who don’t want to be in the public eye, and also aligns with a feminist, post-colonial orientation in which “ethnographers give back to the communities they’re working with.”
Gleig and Langenberg said there are a number of initiatives connected to Healing Our Sanghas, including a forthcoming academic book and multidisciplinary workshops on abuse in religious communities.
Pointing to the Han case, Gleig and Langenberg said that they often hear testimonies from Karma Kagyu practitioners that allegations aren’t discussed openly in the sangha because of the idea that the “truth will come out when the court investigates it.”
“But when a case is settled out of court, under nondisclosure as a part of that, the truth doesn’t come out. That’s a problem,” Gleig said.
Though Healing Our Sanghas was specifically created for the Karma Kagyu community, Gleig and Langenberg said the organizers designed the website and project in a way that could be adapted by other religious communities.
“Ideally there would be structures in place on the community level, and people wouldn’t need to create anonymous websites,” Gleig said. “But right now, that’s just the sad reality of where we’re at.”

I have had the good fortune to meet both the 16th and 17th Karmapas. They are wonderful. We live in a political world and can't avoid it. But the Dharma also lives within all of us and can be our refuge no matter what happens externally. Dharamsala and the Indian government were also very worried that the Chinese would send agents to kill HHK 17, and that is why they were so careful to keep him safe in Dharamsala, especially after the Chinese killed one geshe and all his students with him. It was surely difficult for a teenager to be in that situation, but he is out of it now and well-loved and cared for here. Even in Tibet, he would have had a closely guarded student life and been much restricted. The Chinese were interfering with his ability to get the teachings he needed for this life! They had already made several attempts to kill him since he was little, so it was a very serious and real danger both in Tibet, in D'sala, and here. It is hard to know exactly what is going on there because there is so much lying and slander and false stories among them. Tibetans say it is best to stay three valleys over from any monastery so that you avoid all that, but are still close enough to go for teachings when you can. As far as "Tibet disappears when His Holiness goes", I doubt that very, very much and totally disagree. HHDL has encouraged working with the Chinese so that all cruelties to the Tibetans will stop. He has also publically counseled Ling Rimpoche and HHK that they are to keep the Tibetans going into the future. In India, all the foundations have been built to keep a strong community going into the future. HHDL has said he tried to alleviate the strictures the Indian police put up around HHK, but they wouldn't listen to him, so HHDL felt he was helpless and couldn't do anything to help besides be sure HHK was safe, healthy, well-housed and well-educated for the time being. May the blessings of the lineage lamas strengthen all of us and our lamas and remove all obstacles to the good work of the Dharma kings and their sons and daughters. Its so incredible that we have had the amazing opportunity and incredible coincidences to meet such lamas in our lifetime! May we all hold fast to patience!

Thank you Guru Viking for bringing us such an amazing content. I truely believe in this lady......Although we grow up as Nyingma but my mom is Sakya and my dad is Kagyu. We considered Karmapa as a living Buddha. He is highly revered as of Dalai Lama, no less. So, I'm very sad to hear about the nasty conspiracy happened to the 16th and 17th Karmapa. Someone definately should investigate who is behind all of this....Tibetan government in exile have only interest in playing with power and money.....they don't represent the majority Tibetans, who are very faithful to the Buddha Dharma. Shame on the Tibetan government who led Our great 16th Karmapa fled to the West......they only want Gelupa on the top of all four schools. I guess they were very insecured by the power of Karmapa. I heard my mom also mentioned to me that basically the 17th Karmapa was imprisoned in Dharamsala just the same description from this lady. I don't know why, I hardly hear people talking about such events generally. But we all know people in power are playing this dirty politics. Even the 17th Karmapa mentioned, there is no point of coming back to India if it remain same as before.......Sad😢

I did it years back being an avid Karma Kagyue follower, devotee or disciple apostle...or made me think twice thrice upteenth time analysis of myself !! (One lets go eventually or knows more than outsiders)
I have worked lived or breathed with Rinpoches (and its a wild show)
It is their job to break ill concepts or lies ...and not to confuse us with their own inconsistencies !!
Question is : When do they break an ill concept of ours (conditioning) or when do they have personal problems or private life ?
Fine lines have to be drawn .... and since i know some Rinpoches personally .... like anyone respecting privacy or intimacy and decency .... i am never allowed to breach any kindness of theirs or divulge useless info about them !!
Maybe one could say ... that disgruntled or disillusioned Christians do not much know about 3 baskets ...or seen problems of third basket may be elite show ! dalai lama karmapa, panchen lamas etc
If vajrayana is so superior or high view stance ... why does seeming problem occur ?
If Geshes and Khenpos are so studied why dare they not step in or bout logic ?
Geshes and Khenpos are both doctors of buddh philosophy from kagyue or gelug ...can they not confide or agree ??? (The battle continues ) throw in Dorje Shugden for measure ?? if you like !)
do not get me started ... ( i have assimilated many facts of Buddhism) ......
but i ask too many questions after another ......that no one ever answers (but me)
I can be thrilling to know or find ...or else make your life miserable !!
Do not bother to make life miserable or i tried be be kind tonight !!
or also its easier to become enlightened yourself than to decipher problems of others !! (or is also one)
I seem to be part happy or am currently somehow connected to Genduen Rinchen Rinpoche !! reincarnation of Genduenla of Dhagpo Kagyu Ling France !! I am no devotee //// but live my own life unto myself or may rejoin with some humans who happen to be Buddhists !!
(Real) Honest humans also do not need any religion to behave honest, but sometimes also religious folks happen to be a bit more honest than downright crooks !!
I hope you get the pun ...as how would you know a human being off the bat ??
We seem to have friendships beyond lifetimes or honesty rings true or through somehow !! FOr you or not ! You decide not me !!
and you also know and not me !!

The Shamarpa does not need to be brought back into the lineage, the false Karmapa and Tai Situ are the controversy begun by Chinese intervention. This will continue.

Lol I can't believe my previous sarcastic comment has been deleted. Apparently freedom of expression applies to westerners and not to us barbaric Asians descended from Genghi Khans . White supremacy much

both OTD and TTD have issued a common statement stating the utmost importance of Shamarpa's activity always in the past and future and they both are asking all their students to unite under the next reincarnation of Shamarpa. The student-teacher relationship of Karmapa and Shamarpa can not be dismissed in the tradition of Karma Kagyu lineage. The two are the expression of the same Mind.

That is the sad thing! If India wants Dharamsala back, Tibetans had nothing anymore... no old Tibet, no Dharamsala. Where can the People stay?? They need their own Land - new one - if it is only great as for example like Vaticano (44 Hektar = 0.44 qkm) it would be enough. You don't need a lot for a "State" ... only a room, own Flag, own Computer for registered people and own ID-Cards 😉

I find it sad the degree to which the puritanical Christian belief that sexuality is inherently sinful/anti spiritual has so infected every other religion.
If I am not mistaken, the very name of the Karma sect of which Karmapa is the leader refers to sexual activity, karma mudra. Or am I wrong?

Yes you are wrong. Karma is a Sanskrit term that means 'action', in Buddhism it means 'intentional action' that generates positive or negative results. Karmapa's name derives from that term and mean 'a man of action' or 'a man of Buddha activity'

Kama is desire, hence Kama Sutra. Karma is karma! Yes you're right Dr Nida's book on consort yoga is called Karma Mudra. That's the only use of it I have seen.

@@davidsillars3181 my understanding is that the mahasiddhas demonstrated that ANY activity can serve to awaken- sex not excluded. Hence, “karma mudra” is part of the roster of practice.
Other cultures, historically, have suffered less from the spirit/flesh, mind/matter, puritan/prurient dichotomies than the western theological traditions have bequeathed us.
