- The Oceanside Pier has stood for 135 years in San Diego county, California. On Thursday, first responders were called to put out a fire on the local institution. The fire started just after 3 p.m. at the end of the historic pier. Helicopters dumped water from the skies while boats fought the flames from underneath. The exact cause of the fire on the nearly 2,000-foot-long pier is under investigation, though officials believe it may have started in a vacant restaurant.
A well done to the fire department on keeping the old pier up.
It's still toast
@@weirdmatter The building on the pier is toast, sure. Not the entire pier.
@@weirdmatter oh
Way to go you guys. I from Oceanside, my dad was a Marine for 26 years. He used to take me and my two brothers there when we were younger. So that pier has sentimental memories for me. God Bless all you involved.
"It may have started in a vacant restaurant, everyone got out safely."
... Then it wasn't vacant??
Probably just the one guy who started the fire 😂
Now that's a conundrum.
People like to fish at the end of the pier behind Ruby's, the vacant restaurant, others just like to walk all the way to the end, some people also like to order food from Brine Box which was tiny restaurant in a shack. No one was living inside of the vacant restaurant. It would have been noticeable and reported since the pier is very popular to residents.
They mean the firefighters and people on the pier. You could still walk around the building even though it was closed.

What a shame the entire U.S. Congress wasn't dining in that restaurant at the time?
I wouldn't wish that type of death even towards those I dislike.
@@soundsource3200that all goes out the window when they’re actively funding a genocide.
@@soundsource3200 I would lol
@@bleachknight90Be Careful. There may be people that feel the same about you.😮
Wow karma
I swear everything is going into flames
Oh it definitely is 😔
Huh, no kidding.
Recently a 400-year-old pub in the UK also went up in flames. Unfortunately, they could not save the building..
Irish CZcams team Drift Games car workshop, Liseberg Oceana (water adventure park) in Gothenburg and Børsen (Old stock exchange building) in Copenhagen, just to name a few.
Bummer. That's a great place to fish. Especially at the end of the pier where the restaurant is. If you cast far enough, you may catch something really big!
I've never been there but I'm glad they took care of it so quickly.
Walked that for years when I was growing up. My grandfather caught many fish off that pier. So glad they were able to save it.
I used to work in the food industry. I bet anything that the last crew in that kitchen didn't clean the fryer thoroughly that there was still some grease left over. One spark is all it takes to get that oil burning.
I live nearby, and that Ruby’s has been closed for years. 😂
the restaurant has been closed for several years.
The restaurant has been closed and the pier was closed in February too
I remember that pier with affection from my early years and time at Camp Pendleton. To lose it would hurt even though I am no longer in the state.
Squatters.
yes because both groups came together to start a fire on a dock in california
I think squatters is possible, the Ruby’s diner has been closed since 2021. It was vacant.
They started a home on fire in Massachusetts.
@@sw-tg6no which town?
Rubys was a great restaurant to go to especially their strawberry shakes 😢
well newscuum's dictatorial rules regarding covid caused it to go out of business several years ago.
Rubys restaurant isn’t on the Oceanside pier it’s located on the Huntington Beach pier and always has
Insurance job
Yep!
Yeah it's disgusting
Memorys lost for others in the name of greed desperation.. capitalism..
Well done Firefightos
Firefightos...sound like the name of an 80s punk rock band.
Sounds like a spicy chip brand
@@icuinthelight😂. They opened for the Circle Jerks. It was a riot….
Oh, no! It’s such a beautiful and iconic pier. Just gorgeous at sunset.
Hopefully all the soot and tar that melted down over the pier helps it last even longer and only the building structure on top was damaged.
The whole state is up in flames!
I had dinner there for my 26th birthday 🎂💐 some years ago, it is a truly unique place, oh how I miss San Diego ❤
Bless the hearts of all that helped❤!!!!
1969 - USM - , Oceanside was my first time on Liberty. I am pretty sure it was that pier where I got sucked under by a wave.
yeah you guys were pretty wild in good old Oceanside! Vietnam did that to people. Oceanside has really changed in the last few years. Pretty fancy now! I live by Camp Pendleton now, you take care Marine!
Started in a VACCANT restureaunt..nope.
Your spelling hurts my eyes.

We used to live on S.Strand, sad to see this. Glad they got it put out and everyone is safe.
I just today finished watching the Liam Neeson film Taken2…THAT'S THE PIER AT THE FILM ENDING! They were enjoying chocolate milkshakes him, his daughter & ex at the restaurant! Wow, from all the way here in Nigeria, I was admiring this pier, I go online & its burning??!! Go figure, right?
I come to oceanside multiple times a year and always take walks on the pier. Thanks to the fire department I can continue to do so.
I remember last night that we saw the fire and took pictures of it I hope no one was hurt😢
I'm sure you made sure. Taking pictures of your accomplishments hmm? Lol😂
Someone probably threw ice cubes in the deep fryer for a tiktok
good thing they had plenty of water 💦
Sad...but it's a representative of the state😮😢...Much Love and Support to the Rescue team and community ❤
Wow the movie Taken part 2 and 3 was filmed there at the ending and the design the Grand Theft Auto five bridge to look just like that😮
At least they saved it
This is sad.
Not a total loss. Well done.
I’m 50yr okd and used to visit that pier when my husband was stationed in California. Had my first child at Bayne Jones. She’s almost 30. Sigh.
Is this the pier and restaurant that was in the movie Taken or Taken 2 (at the end of the movie)? Curious. ☺️
Insurance fire
Cheers to the fire department. Real Heroes, they save more than Lives!
Amen!! We LOVE OUR Firemen for SAVING OUR Pier!!
They didn't save any money. It will likely cost more to save something that will have to be torn down anyway than let the fire do its job and rebuild it.
Wasn't that pier at one point a ship dock for cruise ships a long time ago before being turned into what it currently is?
Don't think so
@jr2904 I did a little searching online and found out that it's original use was to service steamships.
A. The fireman they interviewed looks like and kinda sounds like will farrel
B. Fire on water is crazy lmao
😢how sad i have eaten there before 😢😢
Did the Fire Sprinklers built inside help at all?
The restaurant has been closed since Feb 2021. Hear from local stations that it may have started under the pier because it is being renovated.
period
So sad. Been there many times
Dang it, Carl!
I was there watching it and 4 bums came running out of the restruant before it started in flames!
This summer 🌞🔥🔥will be so beautiful 🤩🫡✊🏽
Well, I'm sure that not too much damage has been done, right ? I mean, whatever needs to be fixed won't change how much older this pier could be, right ?
Heard a claim by a local that some people had broken into the closed restaurant and there's a suspicion of arson.
sucks seeing this happen in my city 😓
Isn't that the same place where You & I from One direction was filmed?
Strange that everything old and recognizable suddentlig burns.
Been on this pier numerous times
Sooo sad!!!
😢
I was there when I was 10 years old during a vacation. It used to be a Ruby’s though, I remember looking out that window and admiring the water and sunset. I don’t even remember what I ate, I think it was chicken tenders but idk.
Ok......who did it?
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Sad
those old petroleum soaked pilings, once they get lit, the structure is GONE. We had that happen to our Coast Guard Station!! in Vancouver. Some idiot in a small boat leaving False Creek poured gas over his hot outboard, it caught fire, he jumped, then the boat floated over under the CG pilings, supposedly a station manned 24/7 during broad daylight. The entire old building went UP, and then they got a BRAND NEW ONE for their trouble.. You'd almost think it was planned.
Arson !!! 😢
Could be!! Dont know yet!! The authorities cant tell yet on what started the fire!
in the year of the dragon, eternal existence in the physical form is not feasible, unless holy, and blessed. and in that case, you likely wont be able to recognize, or discern, because of all the smoke. 135 years is about the maximum lifespan for the pier. anything more is pushing it, pushing the year of the dragon into an uncomfortable position. its time for the faithful to gather their axes and saws and take some souvenirs.
I went there sm cus I used to live there
Wow
The insurance won’t pay in California 😂
Vacant Restaurant, all the Squatters got out safely.
I’ve walked on this many times in California
When my son was about 2 and 3 years old, we’d walk down the pier and eat breakfast at Ruby’s. What a great experience and memory.
Too much history going up in flames. Wtf.
It’s crazy something burns to flames 🔥 when it is sitting 10ft above trillions of gallons of water
Damn climate change
Glad it wasn't "Falling Down"
O side or no side
"May have started in a vacant restaurant." Better double check the neighboring structures for damage.
My wife and I got married on the Oceanside Pier. I miss the San Diego County of old.
Is this pier the same one from GTA Online?
Watch it get a new transformation.
I hope a fire doesn’t happen in the Huntington Beach pier next.
looks like where falling down ends
It still there in GTA 5
Welp atleast gta 5 has it
Fire damage $500,000.
Water damage $10,000.000.
Fireman " I think we did good here..."
Don’t be a fool.
The building is a tear down, the important thing was to save the pier itself
Don't forget to add the $2.3m environmental damage that was done when the firefighters had to use trucks, helicopters, and boats to extinguish the fire and don't even mention the environmental damage caused to the ocean and it's living ecosystem when all that nasty washout dropped in.
I do this on the daily in GTA
So it didn't go "up in flames" after all.
Very sad 😔 day on my special pier outside the Marine Corps base.
😢😢😢
NFPA hasn't even been around that long (National Fire Protection Association) so... It stands to reason. 😂
135 years standing, with no fires, terrorist attack
the irony
I saw it at school
Insurance fraud
Was anyone squatting in that restaurant?
Just the guy in the bathroom taking a dump
Humanity truly is a failure.:/
Glad to see the pier's OK. Last time we were there a guy caught a ray and hauled it in and everyone freaked out and backed up. My wife goes, "Jumpin Jesus on a pogo stick, you wimps!" Unhooks it and throws it back in. 🤣
I’m sick of homeless folk in California destroying everything
after water drops there is nothing saved there
Is this an ai reporter
They all sound like that now don't they.
Santa Cruz CA is the actual record holder for the longest wooden pier on the West Coast NOT Oceanside....
Wrong sweetheart. While the longest pier, it is not credited to be the longest wooden pier. That belongs to Oceanside.
Yeah...
Pier pressure.
You know a lot about long wood
guessing vagrants were cooking inside Ruby's and lit the place on fire.
I live right right next to this pier & its STILL on fire 20 hrs later! I was shocked after stepping outside to smoke at around 1 am to look up and see a huge rooftop blaze. Even more shocked to wake up & see it still going. Wtf its barely hovering above a whole entire ocean idk alsi SN the pier history is wrong & i dont feel like writing it out but summed up this is the "3rd Generation" of the pier with its last construction in 1987 a century after the original.
That whole section is gone sadly! I predict that it will be torn down and rebuilt! Because the was fire was underneath the structure as well sadly! But the firemen saved 90 percent of the pier which is good!! Just the ending part where the restaurant was will have to be torn down and rebuilt!
The GOOD NEWS is that the firemen SAVED 90 percent of the pier!!
Oh hey that’s where I live
I see it looks like the rest of California now
I look like the guy from stepbrother
the ugly one...?
Insurance job...
😮
