Mozart 'Alleluia' - Deanna Durbin & Leopold Stokowski

- In "100 Men and a Girl," Deanna Durbin tries to persuade Leopold Stokowski to conduct an orchestra of unemployed musicians that includes her trombonist father. One of her tactics is to infiltrate a Stokowski rehearsal and in the first of the two clips seen here she listens to the Act 3 Prelude from Wagner's "Lohengrin" before being asked to leave the hall.
Pursued by the stage doorman, she hides away in Stokowski's office where she encounters his manager but then returns just as the Maestro is rehearsing Mozart's 'Alleluia.' Curiously for a vocal piece, no singer is present! However, Deanna herself immediately pipes up and Stokowski is suitably impressed by her rendition. Nevertheless, she's unable to persuade him to conduct her orchestra until later in the movie and when he does so all ends happily. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Can you imagine any other 16 year-old having both the voice and stage presence to walk into this scene? What a boss.
Whenever I watch Deanna’s films I keep wishing she was still alive today so I can write a fan letter to her
Deanna Durbin wrote a note to me when my Film Society showed this film around 40 years ago. She said that she only became familiar with Mozart while filming this movie, and sang his music many times after she retired around 1949.
searchers She did well to learn it so quickly in that case. That Exultate Jubilate is no joke.
They don't have them like this anymore. Our world has changed sadly forever and not for the better. May her voice live evermore.
My favourite Deanna Durbin film. So glad that people are still watching her.
Yes, she hit mind blowing high notes. She was also drop dead gorgeous. And the tone and sound of her voice was so pretty. So light and just so pretty. She also hit every note on the runs.
Opera singers used to go hear her sing in the movies. Except that she kept the studio in business she would have done wonderfully well singing in concert. She finally got fed up being exploited and retired at a young age in Paris.
Beautiful until the day she died. Just a gorgeous soul inside and out.
@@inthewoods80 My sister's friend turned me on to Deanna, and I've been a big fan. So sweet and innocent, and so talented. Heck of a pianist as well!
she’s so underrated 🤦🏻♀️❗️🤩
No, just forgotten. Discovered on Tube about a decade ago. But has one of those voices that only has to be heard to be appreciated.
Dame! That girl could sing!
When I was a child in the forties, I would not miss one of her films for nothing in the world.......!
I feel good every time I watch Deanna Durbin films
I enjoy Deanna’s movies so much as a matter of fact I’m watching The Amazing Mrs Holliday
I miss these movies, loved listening to her sing
Wonderful. Performance of one of my favorite Mozart pieces.. Sings it better than many sopranos - her voice is so unaffected and clear! Mozart, Bach and Handel are my favorites.
Her singing is Remarkable. Sings like a song bird.💖
She was awesome and Proudly Canadian
When I have my first child I’m gonna name her after Deanna Durbin
Brilliantly Conducted by the Wonderful Leopold
Stokowski and sung by the lovely Singing Star Deanna Durbin , so extremely moving💖
Deanna Durbin was a mediocre soprano -- she had a small, uninteresting and inadequately-trained voice (her teacher taught her how to punch out high notes, but never taught her to sing a slow, beautiful melody in the lower-middle of her voice.) If she had ever actually sung a simple song, slowly and beautifully, I'd have appreciated her more.
@@marioncapriotti1514 Yes, Wasn't she wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this so much. Every time I am forced to endure Leonard Cohen's Alleluia, I think about it. This happened tonight again on a cruise ship. Wifi is poor, but eventually managed to watch it. Deana's voice is superb. Many thanks for posting and leaving up.
What? Leonard Cohen is an icon! I'm not crazy about that song, but he has many greats.
It's a pity she didn't carry on singing what a great voice she had
What a voice truly God given
A new movie "100 men and a girl" made in year 2020 would have a very unfortunate connotation to it. Probably a reflection of the society having gotten way coarser in the intervening decades since this lovely movie was made.
it's always good to hear good quality gems such as this beautiful one I love Deanna so much for her pure rich elegant angelic sounding voice she was very beautiful and gifted in the arts of music and films she credited through those golden years their will never be another quite like her not ever for she will always be a wonder to listen to and adore love you sweetie pie peace everyone.
Diana Dublin was brilliant god bless her.❤❤❤❤
I don't know about Diana Dublin but Deanna Durbin was brilliant too.
Deanna
What wonderful times they were. Those were the days.
Three years before WW2? A year before Hitler took over Austria, two before before Czechoslovakia and three years before Poland!
I love this too but let's look at historical context!
Thank you for posting this.
I have always loved Deanna Durbin and her voice.
I am Canadian and so was Deanna Durbin.
I think she was born in Winnipeg Manitoba.
There was some reason why her mother and her moved to the Unite States.
I have to check that and then make another comment.
As far as I know Deanna Durbin still lives in her home outside of Paris France. Go less her and may she have good health always. She made many Canadians and Americans happy bduring World War 2 and I believe that there was a performance for the war effort which included Judy Garland, Deanna Durbin and the great atherine Grayson who I believe all worked for different studios.
Have to check on that too.
God Bless everyone.
Movies and voices like Deanna Durbin's and Jeanette Macdonald helped me when I was young and stuck at home with bronchial asthma and /or bronchitis.
My generation was blessed as weekday afternoons (Monday to Friday) in Toronto I could see 2 old movies every day.
It was the Golden Age of Television when there were live performances on TV shows so you could see all of the unexpected humour from Red Skelton, Jack Benny and Bob Hope, Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca, Carol Burnett (she was quite young and just starting out guesting on different shows. I can't remember who gave her her first TV break though. Maybe Sid Caesar on his Show of Shows. and of course Lucille Ball , Vivian Vance (Ethel) and Desi Arnaz and William Frawley (Fred) from I Love Lucy. Wish I knew the nae of th olde actress who played Mrs. McGillicuddy the babysitters for Little Ricky on the show, (Desi Arnaz Jr. who was on the show months after he was born).
Have a great day!
Deanna was born in England both her parents were from Lancashire I think she moved to Canada when she was 5 if my memory serves me correctly Deanna was always so very loved by her fans especially in England Winston Churchill was a huge fan as was Ann Frank Deanna touched so many people such a wonderfully talented Lady :)
+Richard Savage Deanna Durbin was born in Winnipeg at Grace Hospital. I knw she and her family went to California when she was young. I have this info from IMDB and Wikipedia. She has always been known as being Canadian.
do you know if Deanna durbin played any characters of how she was like in real life. and I think some of her adult movies are underated like lady on a train it started with eve

You are perfectly correct Deanna's English born parents moved for better living conditions to Canada and then to California when Deanna's Father developed a chronic chest condition and needed warmer weather Deanna was so grateful for her discovery and career development as it meant she could allow her Father to give up work with his ill health. I have loved Deanna Durbin for over 35 years after discovering her by accident whilst flicking through the channels (all 4! 😁) Life was awful for me for personal reasons and she made me laugh and smile ☺ Deanna always cheers me up when I am feeling depressed I have a personal collection of Deanna Durbin items totalling over 1000 with many many rare items including 29 Ideal Deanna Durbin Dolls and 1930s movie posters clothing from the Deanna Durbin range many many signed photographs and personal letters even her school book it would seem that here in England we have a huge fan base for Deanna Durbin which she deserves as she was such a beautiful soul 😊
What, indeed, will heaven even sound like?!?!👼🙌🙏
Yes it does. Visited with near death experience with four hours gone. Nope no brain damage from lack of oxygen. God is good. 👼🕊️

Hi there.
I don’t recall which films mum had, they must be with my brother who still lives in the family home. I used to CZcams Deanna then we would watched the clips together.
I was with my mum till she passed away and I played ‘Because’ on my phone right next to her ear. It was my mums fave Deanna song. I know that she could hear her beautiful voice to the very end. ❤
Ps Laura, I cry each time I hear that song now x

Does anyone know if this was Stokowski's regular orchestra (Philadelphia)? If it is, one of the four trombonists at timestamp 2:29 is my great-great grandfather.
From what I've read the men shown here are contract musicians hired by Universal Studios in Hollywood to "play" for these particular scenes in the film. That said, the music actually recorded and heard in this film was performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra in Philadelphia with Stokowski conducting. Deanna Durbin did travel to Philly from Los Angeles to expressly record her singing voice while accompanied by the orchestra there.
Thanks

A beautiful young actress and singer who could definitely hold her own against Stokowski. Sometimes I fantasize about a sequel to the Wizard of Oz where Durbin played Princess Ozma. I didn't know Stokowski had such expressive eyebrows.
Deanna nearly played the role of Dorothy. She's amazing! My favourite!
First, please accept my apologies for going off subject, here.
But I've been a fan of this particular song because of "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda"!
One of the character's on that show, used the piece of music at the start of your video, as one of "his fight songs!" (He was also a big fan of 'Wagner'!)
L-L-LEOPOLD!!!
Stokowski has quite a demeanor
DeannaDurvin era Esta era?q bueno q cantabael ALELUYA. de Mozart!
Little Miss Fixit at her best!
A little English girl from Canada :) !
Interesting how they were playing Wagner and Mozart in 1937. Things changed in 1941...
I don't understand why no matter how old the footage Stokowski is always old. Was he never young?
Why not GOOGLE him and find him in Wikipedia. I believe he was already in his late fifties or early to mid 60s when movies with him in them were made.

Come on, Pops, just spare one night.
She makes me think of Judy Garland at that age.

abc3030m1 BC No it isn't. Ridiculous error. You've heard the Bridal Chorus, badly played, at practically every wedding. It is the prelude to Act III.

That was Mozart?
Amazing, too bad the volume is so low.
I know I had to go and buy a bluetooth speaker so I can hear these youtube videos.
Me too. Just bought a Bluetooth for 9 dollars yesterday. Worth it

Alll male orcheatra??
Don't judge the past, that was the norm in the 1930's.
Even the Harpist?
BTW! Born in 1933! Remember Walter Damrosh and kiddie programs.
I have never seen a woman conducting.🤔

That would be an unfortunate title for a family movie in today's Hollywood... ugh.
😂🤣🤣😂
featuring some bald guy
Composed by a teenage boy - it's ridiculous!
a first rate voice-what happened to her that she did not have a major career in opera
Movie studio contractual obligations. The Metropolitan Opera in NYC invited her to audition... Alas, never happened. She was also an early choice for Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and Katherine in the Kiss Me Kate movie - but Deanna Durbin had already retired from public life and couldn't be coaxed back.
Marc Kenig One of the main reasons, if not the only reason Deanna couldn't b coaxed back was that when she gained a bit of weight and got a bit older Hollywood didn't seem to want her and/or there may have been some nasty criticism of her losing her figure. (Think these criticisms made her retire from public life.)
Think she had had enough having to please people that might abandon her again and she did not want to be hurt anymore.
In France she often gave performances in her home for friends and acquaintances and may still do so I hope if she has the energy.
...Or if she hasn't been DEAD for about a year-and-a-half now. That kinda saps one's energy :-)
SORRY!!! I haven't checked. I have hd had my own problems!!! Fighing racism on the internet for one thing that has kept me busy. Anyway its something that is NOT FUNNY. I am sure that tere ar emany people who loved her that did not find out yet because she is and has been almost a complete recluse for about 30 yearts or at least did not want the general people to bother her even in France as far as I know. I shl check articles on her on IMDB and Wiki. Sorry bt did I not say that I hopeshe is till living and giving performances or that s far s I kwhe was still giving thm? aNYWAY THANS FORMTHE info.
Marc Kenig yES SHE DIED aPRIL 20 2013. tHAT MONTH I MOVED AND IT WAS A BAD MOVE AND I HAVE BEEN ILL WITH ASTHMA IN BOTH SUMMERS AND ACTUALLY LOOKED HER UP TODAY BECAUSE (SORRY CAP LOCK WAS ON) I HAD BEEN VIEWING jENETTE mACdONALD AND nELSON eddy SONGS AND DEANNA'S VERSION OF SOME OF THEM WERE THERE AND ALSO THE aLLELULIA PIECE FROM 100 mEN AND A gIRL sORRY Sorry keep hitting the caps lock.
Hope this satisfies you. Being a child of Winnipegers I am and always was proud of Deanna Durbin. The world ignored a gem (Deanna) and now the Lord has her singing for Him. God Bless her memory.
