  • The Riese & Müller Homage GT Touring HS is a full suspension urban electric bike with high-torque or high-speed motor options, comfortable gel saddle, premium ergonomic grips, and upright geometry provide comfort. Premium Supernova lights run off of the ebike battery systems, the backlight goes bright when either brake lever is pulled and the headlight has a low and high beam, metal enclosures add protection. Included ABUS Alarm Lock is keyed to match the battery, dual-battery option extends range, extra-wide fenders keep you dry and are reinforced to nearly eliminate rattling, reflective tires, large 180mm hydraulic disc brakes. Unique suspended rear rack reduces strain on cargo or child passengers, very little frame flex despite the deep step-thru design, heavier than most competing products but comfortable at speed, dual air-suspension is highly adjustable, multiple drivetrain options (Rohloff, NuVinci, Shimano), and multiple display choices (Kiox or Intuvia), only one color, three frame size options.

    EBR reviews ebikes in all price ranges and that shouldn't change. I bet for every guy saying I wish he'd stop reviewing these expensive European bikes there's a guy on the other end of the spectrum saying I wish he'd stop reviewing these cheap Chinese bikes. If you're not a prospective buyer in this price range (neither am I) just watch them for their educational value. As these manufacturers hit critical mass and achieve economies of scale many of the features you see on the spendy bikes will 'trickle down' to less expensive bikes. It used to be only the top of the line cars came with power windows and automatic transmissions. Now virtually everything has power windows and automatic transmission. You get the idea. This is the ebike for the 1%, accept it for what it is.

    The new Homage looks great. I could see a lot of people going for that one. The step-through looks really good and it does remind me of a scooter. No one has a scooter you have to step over, so this type of bike really makes sense.
    R&M really make the best looking low step bikes. When I saw the Nevo it was the first time I felt that I wanted a step through bike. And this is the same. They’re going to have real universal appeal.
    And I think in future, I probably would go for the rohloff if I could afford it. Great to see them switching from chain to belt with the rohloff as well. It looks so clean.

      Hey Chris! Thanks for sharing your perspectives, I agree that this is more approachable (and for me, more enjoyable) than a gas powered scooter or even electric if I had to ride it on roads vs. paths. I'll be covering more R&M models with Chris and we will focus on the Rohloff a bit more. Seems to be a big interest here :)

    EBR definitely needs to review these bikes. If anything, when I saw nothing from Riese & Muller from Interbike I was worried that the no service-fee no play approach had taken its toll. Looks like Propel Bikes paid for this review, but still, I am happy Chris has. I purchased a Riese & Muller Charger from a dealer here in Australia who, at the time, were trying real hard to clear their Kalkhoff stock and were really pushing me to purchase that brand instead. I test rode a few bikes and the R&M was in a different league all together. Yes, they are expensive, but it is one of those cases where you feel the extra cost is justified. At 4,000km and just one standard annual service I could not be happier. If anything, although it has been just about a year, I'm already thinking of trading up for the Super Charger.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  Před 5 lety +1

      Interesting, I heard something about Focus and Kalkhoff maybe not being in the US as much this year? I wonder what their strategy is... seeing a lot of Gazelle updates, feels like they are shifting that way right now. It's neat to hear your perspective, having purchased one, and I agree that there is a premium feel and reliability here that helps to justify the price. I feel thankful that Chris is sponsoring these reviews and yeah, it was tough skipping their booth... but I only had limited time and want to honor the brands that are willing to make the trip possible for me. Interbike is a lot of work, and I've gotten sick and run myself really lean financially to cover it in the past. This year worked better :)

    • @BilginOzkan76
      @BilginOzkan76 Před 5 lety +1

      The dealer has told me a number of times that he uses my experience as a prime example on how Riese & Mueller bikes simply "sell themselves". He didn't have to upsell the R&M bikes to me. Simply riding one was enough for me to convince me all on my own.
      It's a pity they didn't help you with your Interbike trip. Let me know who I can contact to reiterate the importance of what you do for the ebike community outside of the EU!

    Great review. Bike seems well made. I do agree with the guy from Propel bikes that this bike is a little complicated, but well made. I have the Model S from the electric bike company. It has no gears, and that works for me. Its simple, the chain does not come off, and its reliable. I am a little intimidated by this bike, and the cost is prohibitive, unless there is a payment plan. Overall im excited about this bike, but i don't think I'm ready for it yet.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  Před 5 lety

      That's cool, I'm glad you're enjoying the Model S! That is a great one... and the simplicity does seem to make it reliable. Some companies are now offering finance through programs like Affirm. I haven't dug into it much, but sounds interesting. Chris and some other dealers might have more info about that too.

  • @Benjamin_Jehne
    @Benjamin_Jehne Před 6 lety +3

    I thought the hole time, these are more motorcycles than normal ebikes and short before the end, you mentioned that, too.
    Yes they’re expensive, but they’re not the same like a lot of those overpriced normal ebikes. They’re really massive compared to typical ebikes.
    There will always be the discussion what is the right price for such a bike and what should you review more. I have a 1250€ ebike, now I bought the Cube Touring Pro for 2500€ but I would wish, the people would test both before buying. The cheap one is doing it’s job, no question, but it’s like driving an undifined something with questionable driving characteristics. It’s safe, that should be said. The driving characteristics of the Pro are so sharp and defined, that you wouldn’t buy the cheap one, when you tried both.
    And thats the point with the R&M bikes. You really have to try one and then judge. They’re completely out of reach for me, but it’s really like riding an S-Class Mercedes.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  Před 5 lety +1

      Great perspective and points there Benjamin. For me, even reviewing so many bikes across the spectrum, there's a really solid polished feel about the Homage in particular that makes it feel like a motorcycle or nice scooter. It's a cool experience, but I'm also priced out ;)

      True, I value this product more highly in my personal life... like if money weren't an object, I actually want to ride an electric bike because I dislike riding motorcycles in traffic. ebikes are quiet, can be taken on many bike trails etc. Riese & Müller is just one of the more premium brands, so the price is high, but I have a whole list of affordable ebike reviews here: electricbikereview.com/category/affordable/

    I'm sorry but whoever designed that frame definitely dropped the ball when it comes to that piece that goes up to the rear rack. I know they probably did that to help support weight that you put on the rack but it just looks bad. It definitely throws the lines of that bike off. I mean they could have had it come up on a steeper angle and then go horizontal beginning or mid rack.

    • @kylewist7745
      @kylewist7745 Před 6 lety

      Because it's a mid-drive motor. Mid-drive motors never have throttles, but they are far more efficient and smoother to operate than hub motors.

    • @nija1976
      @nija1976 Před 6 lety

    • @stevenschwartzstein4502
      @stevenschwartzstein4502 Před 6 lety +1

      Not true. Bafang mid-drive motors can be and usually are outfitted with a throttle. I'm guessing it's more of a Euro thing that they don't make use of a throttle.

    • @kylewist7745
      @kylewist7745 Před 6 lety

      That's interesting. Thanks for the education. I ride a Trek Verve+, and if this is truly possible, I really wish Trek (an American company) would add throttles to their mid-drive bikes. Even their $5,000 28mph Super Commuter 8+ doesn't have a throttle.
      All the other mid-drive bikes I researched didn't have throttles, either, but I didn't see any using the Bafang system referenced here. Is it just a conversion kit, or are there companies that integrate it more cleanly into purpose-built bikes?

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  Před 5 lety +4

      Hey guys! European companies almost never have throttles on ebikes because it is not legal in most Euro countries, such as Germany. They have Class 1 (pedal assist to 15.5mph / 25km/h) and we in North America get that raised to 20mph. They also have Speed Pedelecs which can reach roughly 28mph but require special licensing... In much of North America, no special licensing is required. AND many companies here, such as Pedego, do have throttle options. The seem to be popular for cruisers... and yes, Steven Schwartzstein is correct that many mid-motors do offer throttle. Check out much of the EVELO line: electricbikereview.com/brand/evelo/ which use Bafang or the Pedego mid-drive City Commuter which uses the Dapu centerdrive electricbikereview.com/pedego/city-commuter-mid-drive/ I hope this helps! You won't see Bosch, Brose, Yamaha, or Shimano drive systems with mid-motors because their bigger markets are all in Europe, so they just use the same or slightly overclocked versions of hardware for the States.
