Riese & Müller Delite GT Rohloff Review - $8.7k

  • The Riese & Müller Delite GT Rohloff is a top of the line full suspension electric bike with sturdy suspended rear rack that will be gentle on a child-seat passenger or your cargo in a trunk bag and panniers. Custom hydroformed aluminum alloy frame positions the motor and battery weight low and center for excellent balance. Two color options and three frame sizes with adjustable stem provides excellent fit. Premium 65mm plastic fenders are durable and mounted with additional support arms to stay put on rough terrain, no chattering experienced... paint-matched arms that wrap below fenders to reduce snags. Super bright Supernova front and rear lights that run off of the rechargeable integrated ebike battery, the rear light goes bright when either brake lever is pulled. Gates Carbon belt drive is cleaner than a chain and more reliable, custom pulley system routes the belt over the rear swing arm for easier wheel maintenance and replacement (no frame cuts here). Electronically shifted Rohloff geared hub is durable and provides a huge 265-degree gearing ratio with 14-gears for use on any sort of terrain. High price point reflects the custom build and premium components, but I think you're also paying for the R&M name. International assembly and built-to-order means you could be waiting months to receive the bike if you live in North America. Only specced with the PowerPack 500 vs. higher capacity 625. Can't add a PowerPack or double-battery option later and the PowerTube is longer and heavier than PowerPack, so less portable to bring a second along in a bag.

I have had this model (but GX) now for a couple of months. Yes it is expensive but worth every dollar. Find the bike pretty quiet so maybe needs a few miles/km to settle in.
It will probably will be my only ebike as I am the wrong side of 70 so I am expecting it will see out a couple of bikes worth half the price.
I get plenty of exercise cycling above the speed cutout which is 25kmh downunder.
This bike may not suit everybody but I have no regrets. The way the world is at the moment just enjoy the ride whatever bike you have.

My wife and I - still on the right side of 70 :-) - have been biking all our lives. Took this and the Load70 for a test ride today. They were super comfortable and easy to ride - like the Rolls Royce of cycles. If you can swing it, e-bikes do not get better than this. We still use ordinary bikes but want e-bikes while we are agile and easily can adapt to an e-bike system. Too many accidents with older riders. Can also help motivate for rides when wind, rain and snow makes biking a chore.

This bike is a very nice bike, but it is hard for many Americans to understand - as they compare it price-wise to other bikes. I think Europeans see it as an alternative to a motor scooter or motorcycle and even a car. So price-wise, for them it is cheaper overall - due to no cost of gas, insurance, etc.
The Rohloff hub does quiet down after a few hundred miles. Now with over 3,000 miles on it, I do not notice any drag on the Rohloff. The Gates belt does make a little noise after you rack up some miles and you do need to keep the belt properly tensioned, or it will make noise.
Since we own two R+M bikes with Rohloff E-14, I can say getting on a derailleur bike now feels very primitive. We also own an e-cargo bike with Di2 electronic shifting of a derailleur, which is nice but not the same standard as the electronic shift Rohloff. The E-14 is not perfected yet, but its very nice compared to the alternatives. I'll never go back to a derailleur set up.

Nice review, thanks. I have the two battery version with knobby tires. It is a thrill to ride on bumpy city streets or mountain bike trails in Texas and Arizona. I bought it from Propel bikes in NYC. They shipped it in a crate to my house in New Orleans. All I had to do was turn the handle bar and tighten the screws. Also installed the pedals. Have been riding it several days a week for four months. I ride other bikes too. The Riese feels like it can go anywhere with the full suspension. On my first trip, 68 miles, the battery ran out at 58 miles because I didn't realize I was in turbo mode. Had to pedal the rest of the way without assist, into a strong headwind. Now I use it mostly in Ecco mode. Love this bike.

Some go and order a carbon framed racing bike for their mid-life MAMIL crisis. I ordered this one. Superdelite GX, Rohloff, front rack. Could not justify the fox upgrade. More comfort, more range, more versatile. I like camping and this is more than capable of carrying all the kit I need. I'm replacing a 22 year old rigid Trek hybrid so the leap in technology is huge. I'm sure I will still be riding this in another 22 years. My oldest son just turned 14 and wants to mountain bike. With this I can follow and keep up with him on the MTB trails, then commute to work the next day. I can also take myself off for a spin through the forest trails late at night once the kids are in bed (the lights look amazing). I live in a hilly area and the prospect of that last hill to get home puts me off going out on my old bike. I tested this bike on some steep hills and you still get puffed climbing them but the difference is that you have a massive smile on your face. It makes hills fun. So, end Feb, mid March I should get it. I cannot wait.

I'm sure Riese-Muller spent a lot in terms of R&D to develop this, but for an $8.7K belt-driven ebike, I expect it to be quiet. I think Riese-Muller should have used the Bosch Active Line Plus. I'm not going to spend $8.7K+ for an ebike that sounds like my little nephew's R/C car.

This is the upgrade to my two year old bike, except mine has the Nuvinci. If I was buying it again I’d go with the Rohloff for sure. And I’d probably get the Fox suspension as well. I’m still having this weird buzzing with the nuvinci I don’t like. The shop couldn’t figure out if there was anything wrong with it but I feel like it’s not quite right. Another issue I’m finding with my current one is the external battery can only be charged off the bike because I don’t have the second battery. And I’m having a hard time getting it to seat properly when I put it back in. I think I’m hearing the click but I’m not sure. Maybe the key is in the wrong position. Either way, it’s a huge hassle and I want to charge with it on the bike. The internal one is a must for the future. Don’t need two, and it looks too bulky to me as well.
People can talk about the price, but I’m going car free in 3 months. That will save me £250 per month on the finance agreement, hundreds on insurance, hundreds on maintenance, parking etc. I could buy one of these a year and it would work out cheaper than a pretty average car.

The high cost of this bike makes it a shame to have to compromise with the options but I’m tempted to order the Superdelite Vario with the Fox suspensions, the GX options and the SmartphoneHub. I’d swap back the tires to the Super Moto X and get pedals with clips on one side and flat on the other side.

I rode one just recently - it's not really that loud (at least not to me, compared with other ebikes). Now, if my head were down by my waist or below the seat where the camera was, it would probably sound as loud... but up on my shoulders where my head usually is (vs somewhere else sometimes lol) the volume of the motor is just fine. In fact, it's a bit quieter than the motor on my Priority Current, and lower in pitch as well. The sound of the Rohloff is just a bit of ratcheting noise kind of like a 10-speed. By the time I got to about 10mph the wind noise was louder than the whole of the motor and the hub combined. It was a non-issue (for me).
I also rode an Enviolo version. I liked it - it's got a great range of "gear" ratios although not as wide as the Rohloff. The Rohloff has extended range over the Enviolo at both the low and high ends. I live in a very hilly area and got the HS (28mph) version so I went with the Rohloff. If I were getting a 20mph version, I'd seriously consider the Enviolo - the highest gears of the Rohloff wouldn't be much use at 20mph IMHO, and the Enviolo costs _significantly_ less.
I rode over some really crappy road and up a couple of really steep hills and this bike just ate it all up and licked its chops. R&M charges a lot for this baby, but they earn it IMHO. It's quite a bike!

Hey Court! Question for you. What is your opinion of the GX option for this bike? The GX option consists of the dropper seatpost, knobby tires, flat pedals, horned handlebars, and a wider suspension range. Do you see any DISADVANTAGES with the GX option? I'm sure it would improve my handling and experience on trails. I am concerned that it might worsen my ROAD handling (with the knobby tires). I envision mostly riding roads and gravel, but I would like the GX option for the occasional trail. I like the horned handlebars for a variety of hand positions, even on roads. But would the knobby tires ruin my ride on the road, even with suspension? Hmmm, probably not, but I would really like your opinion. Thanks for your insights!!

Hi, Great review as always. Been trying to connect a HR monitor to my Kiox computer, does not work as intended, not had any luck with Bosch, they do not have instructions or support available. In the UK shops do not know how to get it to work. Can you possibly find out using your contacts and maybe do a video on how and what you can connect. Also could you find out if phone and HR can be used at same time, otherwise you cannot track your bike ride and monitor HR at same time. Again, thanks for the great work

    • @ruirodtube
      @ruirodtube Před 4 lety +2

cambike you can connect Bluetooth heart rate monitors to the Kiox. I’m using the Bontrager HR monitor and it works flawlessly.
To pair it you must go to settings, make sure the Bluetooth function is activated in the Kiox, then further in the settings pair the HR monitor.
WATCH OUT: the Bluetooth HR monitor WON’T connect to Kiox if it’s already connected to your smartphone. You must choose one or the other. I choose to connect via Kiox and for that I first deactivate Bluetooth momentarily on the iPhone, stand next to the bike/Kiox with my HR monitor strapped on, check that the HR is displaying on the Kiox and finally reactivate the Bluetooth on my iPhone so that the ebike connect app can communicate with Kiox.
If you follow the above steps Kiox will collect the HR, the distance, the speed, the power delivered by your legs, and transfer them to the e-bikeConnect app which in turn records the GPS 3D position and uploads all the data to the ebike connect website. From the website you can then export it to Strava, so you don’t have to run Strava on your smartphone while riding.

The only thing large about the largest panniers is their price tags. Give me a front rack and a large rear rack and good lights (for being seen and seeing) and a non toy horn. The Rohloff is the only part on this bike, that is special. No dual battery for 8700€, the weldings doesn't look overwhelming, non polished, but these are things where I would say, for that money they have to go two extra miles but they didn't.
