  • It's been a couple of years since I've driven a Aston Martin DB9 and actually it was here in Southern California. It was great drive and I even took that car for a spin around Willow Springs to explore its dynamics at high speed. Wonderful car.
    This one is the latest, the 2016 Aston Martin DB9 GT, and we've driven it from LA to out here in Palm Springs to one of our favourite roads and filmed it in 4K.
    The DB9 is Aston Martin's iconic grand tourer - and it's so well known that when people think about Aston, there are a couple of cars they immediately recognize - one being the DB5 and the other, the DB9.
    It's the car that brought Aston into the modern age and is perhaps best defined by its legendary styling. Just look at it. There's just not a bad angle and its design language has spawned Aston's entire current lineup.
    So what is an Aston Martin DB9 GT? It's the most Powerful DB9 ever - 540 horsepower and 457 pounds of torque. It retains the six speed transaxle transmission and at first glance, you may think it needs more cogs, but it still works brilliantly, notably on roads like this.

    I love the general looks of Aston Martins but I prefer the DBS over DB9. It's that little bit more aggresive but just wow, what a car that DB9 GT is. Just gorgeous.

    The 4K video came out beautiful, even on my non-4k screen. I really love Aston's little details, like the small V12 badge, the carbon fiber pieces that the tail lights surround, as well as the orange details like on the sections of the paddle shifters that match the orange piping on the leather of that stunning interior. Fantastic quality video, I really am shocked you guys don't have much more subscribers and views than you do! That will change though, surely. You guys have passion and it shows in your work

      +CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM We always try to punch well above our weight when it comes to making these videos. We take a small budget and try and maximize every aspect of that. As the channel continues to grow, every little penny we earn and every new connection that we can make will be used to further improve our work. Right now our biggest issues are limited time and currently limited viewership. The former becomes a non issue if the latter is solved.

    • @nickbusato7138
      @nickbusato7138 Před 8 lety +1

      +CONDUCTOR WE HAVE A PROBLEM PS: watching it in 1080 should still look pretty awesome due to down sampling. I think the other real benefit of 4k other than the higher resolution is that there seems to be less digital artifacts (digital blocking). 1440p for example does look cleaner, and yea even watching it at 4k on a 1080 or smaller screen will look cleaner still. We are just now learning how youtube copes with downscaling our content vs us doing the downscale (Viper ACR for example was shot in 4k then we down sampled it to 1080 prior to youtube upload).

    Really enjoyed that thanks very much, sums up how they make you feel so well, and very well put together!
    I'm surprised you didn't mention the waterfall fascia more, both the GT and the latest Vantage have inherited this from the Vanquish and it's a pleasure. It looks good and works well, the old Ford switches always put me off buying into the brand. I love old school motors but also that my £££ is going into a modern vehicle and I reckon I'm not the only one from a younger generation that would feel this way and have been put off previously. As soon as it went into the Vantage last September, I bought one and I couldn't be happier. Now the complete package.

    • @thompps
      @thompps Před 8 lety

      +Brian Makse I got the V8 S, the V12 just felt too much for normal British roads and I like to really push on! The V8 S (despite its meagre differences on paper) is just so much of a rawer car than the base V8 (which I felt underwhelmed by) and the weight distribution is sublime. It's not as fast as a gt2 or greater Porsche, but the handling is so good it almost makes up for it, and the sound and looks certainly do! I just watched your video again, and you made more of a reference to the AMI2 then I'd heard before, so apologies for my original comment! The AMI2 really makes both the DB9 and Vantages's swan song models so much more special. I saw the DB11 today at Gaydon (AM headquarters) today and you're really going to enjoy reviewing that! Wow... Haunches have a tad of f-type about it, but that's no bad thing. Beautiful proportions and un-mistakenly Aston Martin yet moving the styling on.

    Thanks for this wonderful review. The DB9 went out in style with the new GT. We shall never see another car as sublime as the DB9 ever again, I am afraid. An era has ended. The DB11, IMHO, is way too busy to be an elegant grand tourer.

    I bet you are proud of that 50 shades of grey joke! I have to admit I liked it, too!
    Somehow I feel like Aston Martin charges way too much for what they deliver, but I have to admit that there is something about the old DBS..
    (maybe that would change if I drove one one day :) )

    • @nickbusato7138
      @nickbusato7138 Před 8 lety +1

      +inchskater I think at its 190-200k USD its priced very competitively. Sure there are faster cars for less, but this is a luxury GT car. Its the same or a little bit cheaper than its direct competitor the Bentley Continental. For some people, the fact that this car has a V12 might be enough of a sell if the looks alone did not already do that.

    • @inchskater
      @inchskater Před 8 lety

      Maybe it's not so much the price, but more the technology shortfall. I can't say anything about how these things drive but when I look at the S63 AMG coupe for example, it looks like they put so much more effort in making it the best they can. It doesn't look as great and may not have the same exclusiveness but I wouldn't pay 30k more for design only, when the other aspect's of the car fall behind the competition. Maybe I don't have a rich person's mind (yet?)! hah

    • @BrianMakse

    Good review; really like the music in the beginning....
    Now don't get me wrong, I know this DB9 GT is a sport "touring" and NOT a track car, and if I had the kind of expendable income that would allow me to consider a sport touring car, this Aston Martin would be my first choice, and I would buy it in a flash; especially considering that Mercedes will be supplying Aston Martin with their new engines, and those will be turbo charged V8's, instead of naturally aspirated V12's, or so I have heard anyway...
    So my question is, shouldn't a naturally aspirated V12 do better than 4.4 seconds to 62 mph? In my opinion, and for the price, it should! I have a heavier vehicle with a manual transmission and an unmodified, naturally aspirated V8 that costs 1/6th the price of the DB9 GT, and I can do that as well...
    Does Aston Martin tune their engines down, or something!?

      +puffrooster About the new Aston Martin engines, yes, they're getting the twin turbo V8 from AMG, but there's also this news: vvuzz.com/index.php/2016/01/12/aston-martins-new-v12-twin-turbo/
      Acceleration is a function of a wind range of factors, not just engine output. The DB9 doesn't run on super sticky tires, for example, nor is it engineered for zero to sixty runs. It's not a one trick pony. Doubt your car is heavier than a DB9.

    • @puffrooster
      @puffrooster Před 8 lety

      +Brian Makse That's fantastic! They're still going to be making V-12's, with two turbos' too boot; I'll start saving!
      And you're correct... I went to Car & Driver and checked out the specs of both cars and the DB9 GT is considerably heavier than my car, by almost 500 lbs. It's also not as expensive as I thought it was; only four times the price of what I bought.
      I understand also that the DB9 GT is not a 'one trick pony' and quick acceleration isn't it's purpose (like it is with a muscle car for example), I just assumed that with four extra cylinders, the zero too sixty (two) time would be better!(?)
      I believe that you can have technology, style, luxury AND performance, providing one has enough money to pay for it....

    As much as I like Aston Martins' looks and thunderous engines, the DB11 cant come sooner. AMs need major updates to stay competitive when GTs such as the F-type R and AMG-GT trounce it in performance and can be had for way less money. Then again, people who buy Astons cannot fathom to be seen in plebeian Mercedes and Jaguars.

    • @BrianMakse

    Last of the great DB cars. Last naturally aspirated V12 with the signature AM growl that partly defines the DB cars. The DB11 no longer has this. It's elegant but is missing the "bite". If I could afford an AM it would be the DB9 GT. Before that the DBS. :) The DB11 is IMHO a watered down DB9 GT.

    Great to look at and to take for a spin if you have the chance, but this is one of the single worse automobiles produced in the last 20 years (from an owner's perspective). My Volante spends at least 50% of it's life in the shop for a seemingly endless array of mechanical and electrical failures (maybe even more than that; I've lost track). If you manage to use it for a month without something breaking, leaking, falling off (yes) or triggering an error code , then you've witnessed a minor miracle. Plus, Aston Martin North America is staffed with disinterested pencil pushers who confuse 'politely declining to provide assistance ' with 'customer service.' If you've got the means, I highly recommend driving right past the Aston Martin dealership and picking up a Porsche 911 Turbo S.

      +Brian Makse : It's an '07. I purchased it from the pre-owned department of a franchised Jaguar dealership in New Jersey in late October, 2013. The car had all service records and less than 19,000 miles on the odometer. However, within 48 hours, the parking/rear-proximity sensor failed and an airbag warning light appeared.

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  Před 8 lety

      +Thomas Ferrugia Right. Let me see if I've got this straight. You bought a used, six-year-old car that's long been out of warranty from a non-specialist dealer, and you're upset about it?

    • @ThomasFerrugia
      @ThomasFerrugia Před 8 lety

      +Brian Makse: So, you imagine it's perfectly reasonable to expect a car (originally sold in 2007 with an MSRP of $200,000) to literally fall apart after less than 20,000 miles? Interesting. To me, this kind of 'quality' would be unacceptable in a Hyundai, but that Aston 'mystique' really makes some people lose all common sense and become totally delusional, doesn't it?! I've purchased pre-owned Porsches, BMWs, Mercedes and Acuras (all with more mileage than the Aston), and while they naturally developed a few minor problems here and there (expected from normal wear-and-tear), not one was a tragic POS like this jalopy.

    • @BrianMakse
      @BrianMakse  Před 8 lety
