  • In week 5 of the 1971 NFL season, the New York Jets and head coach Weeb Ewbank announced that Bob Davis was going to be taking over as the starting quarterback of the team for Al Woodall and the injured Joe Namath. Davis, a notoriously bad quarterback, stepped under center against the Buffalo Bills, and delivered what has to be the most surprising start in the over 60-year history of the Jets franchise. This is the story behind that game.

You mentioned how Namath came back in a game against the 49ers. I believe I saw elsewhere that Davis got injured, causing the Jets fans to start cheering, not because Davis was hurt, but because Namath was coming back in to play.

As a 49er fan, I was watching it on the TV that day. The Niners were kicking butt when Davis got injured. The crowd at Shea went crazy when Namath came in. He almost brought the Jets back losing 24-21 in the end.

Bobby was a dominating athlete in NJ high school sports, football, baseball & basketball may have been his best sport. At Univ. The 1971 Buffalo Bills is arguably the worst team in franchise history. Their head coach, John Rauch resigned on the eve of training camp and it was all downhill from there. The Bills started the season 0-10 and finished a league worst 1-13. Also they were shut out four time, twice by the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Colts. So seriously, any QB could have had a big game against them.
