Having done a lot of product shoots, there are shots that are only possible with a slider. Especially with macro stuff. I feel like even tho you're correct that it takes more setup & troubleshooting, a lot of the issues you described are user error stuff. Good slider use takes skill in the same way that good tripod tricks take skill.

I had the opposite experience. I bought the edelkrone slider with the motion head back in 2019, and it has performed great for me. But I do agree that setting it up can take a little time.
Though I can agree that if you're starting out you probably dont need one I use one everyday and I have a camera that lives on the slider so the setup time takes as long as powering up everything. The thing you miss when you're doing pushes and pulls in post is the parallax effect.

I used to be jealous of others who had an Edelkrone slider until I realized it may not be the best investment 😅 What you say has been applicable to gimbals as well for me. That slow digital push-in has been my go-to way of adding a little bit of movement when sliders weren't reliable!

yeah but gimbals move quite a bit , cant imagine covering an event just handheld body only
I’m not sure why but my experience with motorized slider is totally different. I’ve been using them for more than 6 years, tried both Edelkrone and iFootage, and they are really good and become better and better. They can be setting up really really quick and saving a lot of time for content creators who work alone and need to a shoot themselves.
I get it, maybe the title and thumbnail are just for getting views. I think overall for gears you still have to think about the purpose of using them, is it a waste of money really depends on how or why you use it.
Lucky you, every time I take my iFootage out of the bag I ended up with no video, no creative energy left thanks to the poorly supported App. Expensive toy, I'll keep trying to make it work.
I have rented out tons of sliders in my early days of filmmaking. Yes it’s time consuming to setup. But I’ve never come across something as bad as edlekrone. Don’t follow CZcamsrs who tell you to buy things. Listen to people who tell you not to buy unnecessary things. Great video
If you want something small and easy to set up. Try neewer dolly
The beauty of a slider is to get parallax movement. But I can completely follow you in terms of the problems that may come with it. I considered buying an expensive motorized version that I could use for timelapse and stop motion, but subsequently dropped it because there simply aren't enough of these kinds of tasks. I have partly used a drone instead - it also allows for slightly greater movement and combined with other recordings such as your trick with zoom in post, you can get very far in less time.

I think the more action you have in your shot, the less movement you need from your camera. If your shot gets boring quickly due to no action, the more dynamic your camera movement needs to be. Think of a real estate video versus unboxing video. In an unboxing video, your hands are always revealing something new to the audience, so the camera never even has to move. In fact movement might be distracting. In real estate, the house does not move, so you need to be constantly be revealing a new piece of the house because staring at the same wall gets boring quickly.
Bottom line, the viewer needs to know every second of the shot is necessarily working up to something we're not going to want to miss.

How did you record your sound in this video, particularly when you were moving around? Sounds great!
I think the most value comes when doing some match cuts/effects, rather than push/pulls, so you can geta consisten repeatable movement. Or interviews or so that you want a B/C cam with movement and you can just let it run constantly in a one man band situation
or in coverage of an event, leave it moving from right to left towards a distant shot, to give movement to the shot and make it not so boring

what about horizontal movements? Slider its the way to go, adding parallax, what you present can be used on those little exercises as a zoom, but it's not the same thing, as you said, its a different feeling, For example if you're going to make a establishing shot outside a house for a short film it's probably better to go with a slider.
I purchased the Rhino 18months ago. Ive used it three times. All three times it was a specific need, and it was great. I did buy two of those iFootage arms you recommended in a different video (thanks) and I spent a shit ton on a cinema tripod for my kit, so I use the two iFootage arms to stabilize each end of the slider, and with the big Oconnor head, it doesnt flex at all and actually moves nice! But Im 10+ years into my career. It was a want since day one. Its definitely last on the gear priority list though.
Agree. If you want one for a project, maybe see if you can rent one. I have one and use it for two projects. A before/after of a home remodel. Without the slider it would have been really hard to match the framing for a smooth transition. Second was with a probe macro lens. Super cool lens that I rented. I should have just rented the slider too, lol.
I use my edelkrone manual slider on almost everything I shoot. Rarely do I need to matcha movement repeatedly or for an effect in post. I’ve had great luck with its quality and performance for 5 years plus.

I have the Zeapon Micro 2 Plus (looking to get the 3) with the pan and tilt heads. It's not perfect (specially the heads), but definitely allows me to get some great shots. I also use the zoom in and out in post in almost every video I make, but some shots really need the real movement with paralax and perspective. I Also find it very useful for composite shots.
I love my cheap £50 manual slider, got some awesome shots with it. If you use a wider lens, any shake becomes less obvious or very easy to stabilise, obviously depending on what you are filming, I use mine for establishing shots, environments, etc. I have used it on product videos quite a bit, too. but it's more difficult to use in those shoots and takes a fair bit more patience. I'd really like a motorised one, but they are quite expensive, and I have wondered if I would use it regularly enough for it to pay its way. There are a lot of motorised options in the market so choosing one is quite difficult. If I was buying again I would probably go for a smaller manual one first as convenience carrying around is likely to lead to more use. But it really does just depend on what you shoot as to whether its worth it or not.
I own the ifootage Shark Nano and can set it up in less then 2 Minutes and with two Buttons. But it has also some isues with microjidders. But i like the Paralax Movement Options very much.
The motorized slider allows for a one person crew to elevate their multi-camera setup. While I don’t use my edelkrone often, I can’t replace what it does in post with a push/pull - which aligns with what you said at the end. If I had a second cam op on shoot I’d probably just give them a gimbal or easy rig and let them handhold a camera haha.
I think what feels different about adding movement in post is that it feels ‘cheap’ in comparison to the camera itself moving and creating parallax. I would argue that no movement is better than bad movement, but parallax is better than no movement. With that said, I totally understand that when you talk about adding a slider you are talking about adding tools with significant diminishing returns and you need to weigh the time cost of setup/use versus the time of the whole project.

There's a time and place for the slider. It's probably why I keep it around. Because there are only certain shots it can get that a faked shot cannot of course. But for alot of what I do, I can get away with just locked off or a subtle push in from post

Having all of the toys would be nice, but they’re expensive and they take up so much room. In my experience, simpler is better. Cool video.
Still useful for me for my work. But I'm kinda unique in that I set up the camera and camera shot, and program the slider, hit record and walk away. But for one-off shots? I wouldn't use the slider - I would just use my gimble.
Well done. The key is having enough extra resolution to allow the zoom while still delivering a sharp image, so your BMPCC 6K Pro gives you lots of wiggle room to deliver 4K. So, perhaps you can cover not just zooming, but panning, where the image stays the same size. The best example of how zooming and panning to give the viewer a sense of motion is the way Ken Burns would pan and zoom STILL photos, giving viewers a much more immersive experience.
I do have an old manual slider that I usually set up on either 2 tripods or 2 light stands, so far the results have been pretty good but the intermittent use doesn't really justify a motorised version.
I don't use them that much but each time i use it, i really like the rendered vid. It's clunky to set up but i really like it

For Moco (product, other moco things) you need a motor - by hand is just not doable. It's also great for interviews. Edelkrone I agree is not good - I would never use on a paid shoot. I would also suggest a Dana dolly (or a Kessler Shuttle). You never see actual sliders on pro sets, just old-school dollies, Danas, Kessler Shuttle etc.

I completely agree about motorized sliders. I have a motorized slider called the One-Man Crew for shooting interviews, and when it works, it's excellent. However, it's been extremely finicky and time-consuming to set up since day one. Even manual sliders seem to have fallen out of favor in recent years, with most people opting to use gimbals for similar shots.
I agree. Slider shots can look beautiful but they're a pain to set up. I do mostly corporate and documentary. I bought a simple IKAN cf slider a while back and have almost never used it. I think if you don't to a lot of work that benefits from sliders i.e: product, real estate, it's just not worth the investment. That's why i haven't bought a more expensive manual or motorized slider
Product videography is very difficult without a slider, if not impossible.

We had a motorized slider, a very early one from kessler crane. Super expensive, had a 900 pound tripod, but it worked. We had it set up on the same movement in the studio and all we would do is change the focus on the camera when we moved in closer. Thats the only way to use em, set it and forget it. Anything thats not super weighted down, and is motorized is gonna be useless.
I know what you may be trying to say in that sliders ar motorised sliders can be a problem. I have a Kessler Second Shooter motion control slider which although I don't use it on every shoot has come in useful on several films. One where a time laps was required and recently in a ghost film where on of the characters come and goes.
Admittedly the Second Shooter isn't cheap but it's far better than the ones you showed and proves that sliders have their place in filming.
I've never disagreed with your takes before but... you just get what you pay for. I bought a cheaper slider before and I sent it back but I've been using edelkrone stuff for awhile and it's always great. Even then though, I'm like at least 6k into their stuff and it doesn't ALWAYS work perfectly, but the cheaper sliders (really anyhting besides rhino or edelkrone) are not worth it.

Hard agree...which might be the reason you've seen the prices plunge on motorized sliders. Only exception might be the RedRockMicro "One Man Crew" which creates lovely parabolic arcing movements for interviews where you don't have a 2nd operator available. Ramps in and out smoother than most any human operator.

Dont put a slider on a single tripod, for starters. Use two heavy stands and create a solid foundation.
It's so much better to do a video on what you shouldn't waste your money on...
Sliders are good for very specific shots like time-lapses or product shots and I've never had those on my shot list. I'm also always behind the camera so a dolly, or wheels for the tripod, were a better solution. Like all of those tools, it's really a question of what you're shooting. It's the same with gimbals.
The one thing, after the camera and tripod, that you should really get is lights. All of the other stuff youtubers push is extras you don't really need. IMO.
You do lose the parallax if you just do a slow zoom in post, there are ways to fake that as well though, if you really want it. Most people won't notice or care.

Most sliders are pretty useless. The only ones I have liked are the heavy duty style with speed rails but they are large and expensive

I bought a manual slider long ago and so far can only think of three shots in a short (for a contest) where I used it and they ended up in finished footage. Trying to get consistent smooth movement is not easy and takes a lot of practice, and several takes. The whole thing is only 3 minutes. @@malibrary7053 just used our small ‘Neewer Pro Metal Tripod Ball Head 360 Degree Rotating Panoramic with 1/4 inch Quick Shoe Plate’. Not a heavy load so didn’t need a larger head. Seemed to work perfectly. The larger tripod head we have seemed to be too big as well

I’m about to find out. I have a Cinevate Duzi 4 manual slider with integral flywheel arriving tomorrow. Cinevate was a small Canadian company that went out of business about five years ago, but this slider was highly regarded. you wrong slider now is easy with new technology and is not hard and big issue like you say you can ytru zoapon miceo 3 or edelkrone 5 is better and easy and look more pro footage that is my opinion
Haven't seen your vids in a while but I must say I completely disagree.
I was doing a video shoot at a wedding for the wedding band to use as promotion.
I rented a slider (don't remember the brand) and two GH5's to go along with my G7 and two G85's.
I set the slider up the night before and had it working in just a few minutes.
Showed up the next day for the wedding shoot and it once again setup in a few minutes including mounting it to two tripods that came with the rental package and it worked flawlessly the whole night besides when the battery died and I had to swap it.
No offense but this whole video sounds like user error to me... I only say that because I have never used a slider before and the one I rented worked perfectly without any additional instructions besides a CZcams video before hand
What's next? "Don't waste money on tripods!" 🤣

HMMM sounds like you just used the wrong sliders and expecting stability using a single tripod.
I think sliders are fantastic for all kinds of productions, especially motorised, many of which you don’t need to use an app. I run a video production company and I have the ultimate slider bundle from Rhino and it allows me to get shots I simply can’t with a gimbal, handheld or tripod.
I just feel your angle and title of the video is wrong and misleading to many people who may be lacking in experience. A good slider is an incredible tool and automated one is even better.

Clients, audience, they don't care and most of all DON'T KNOW SHIT. They only see the end result, if it works, it works. You can spent three days setting up the smoothest push-in but to them, it's just zooming in.
