OK, in the last two videos we talked about the difference between an anxiety attack and a panic attack, and how you can get stuck in a cycle of having panic attacks. In this video we’ll talk about how to stop panic attacks. It’s a bit paradoxical, but it works.
In the previous video we talked about the panic attack cycle. 1- a sensation or feeling, 2- you judge that feeling to be unacceptable, bad or dangerous, 3- this triggers an escalating FFF response, and 4- your brain learns that panic and anxiety are “dangerous”.
So let’s take a deeper look at step 2, the thoughts that transform a physical sensation into something we see as dangerous. Here are common ways of thinking that trigger panic attacks.
The Big issue is believing that panic attacks are dangerous.
Panic attacks are inconvenient, they are uncomfortable, they can be embarrassing or they can interfere with what you want to be doing- but they aren’t physically dangerous.
All these uncomfortable symptoms are just the body tossing you into FFF mode, which makes it less likely that you’ll pass out, stop breathing or any of those other fears. If someone is having a panic attack and they go to the ER, an EKG will show a regular, but rapid heartbeat. You pass out with low blood pressure, a panic attack takes your blood pressure up. Heart attacks feel worse when you walk around, move about, panic attacks feel better.

Does anyone else's panic attacks literally feel like they are going crazy and feel like you'll never get out of it?

    • @e_i_e_i_bro
      @e_i_e_i_bro Před 2 lety +83

For whatever reason (possibly because my father is schizophrenic) I have intense fear that I'm going to hallucinate and go fully crazy during panic attacks. I've heard this thought is common. It does feel you're going crazy because it can feel like an altered state + physical symptoms. I get blurry vision like I'm in a dream and dizzy. Feels crazy for sure. Just know that panic attacks cannot cause you to be psychotic. That is a whole different disorder. these sensations are due to an overactive nervous system, not brain abnormalities that cause psychosis.

      @TherapyinaNutshell  Před 2 lety +196

I think that a lot of people do feel that way. one thing that may help is to label those as "thoughts" not feelings. ie "I'm having the thought that I'll never get out of this" "I'm having the thought that I'm going crazy" just because you think something doesn't mean it's true. Just because you feel a certain way, doesn't mean it's true.

There ARE, people who know what I feel and would understand me.” I feel so alone, no one I know really knows what it’s like to feel panic almost 24/7. It started happening after a concussion and that was three years ago. Started getting better then I got covid. I do even remember who I was before. My whole life is based and worked around how I feel. I want my life back. But the worst part is people in your life thinking your full of it. The isolation and not having someone understand you at all is so heartbreaking. I hope others have found some comfort in these comments too. Sometimes knowing you’re not alone and just really being seen, makes a big difference. ❤

This CD has three separate relaxation/meditation sessions on it czcams.com/users/postUgkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIatrsq guided by a very pleasant and direct male voice. Unlike so many other products of its type, this CD does not have bad synthesizer music, does not feature a phony or affected style of narration, and does not make any bogus claims to be subliminal or to re-train the brain or any of that balderdash. What you get is 1. a guided meditation for getting into a pleasantly relaxed state of body awareness while taking a stroll (superb for those easing back into a fitness routine slowly after an illness or injury) 2. A nice long breath-awareness relaxation session that if followed diligently can put you into very deep states of full-body relaxation and mental calmness, and 3. a buddhist-inspired meditation session designed to help you develop and maintain feelings of loving kindness toward not just yourself and your friends, but toward people you don't even like. The CD makes no claims to be designed for advanced meditators or for buddhists or hindus/yoga practitioners looking for very deep and esoteric stuff. It is geared more toward the average person who just wants to develop the habit of relaxation and stress relief through natural, healthy means. him, if you happen to be reading this, keep up the good work fella, and I love your accent. I would also like to note that I have never fallen asleep while listening to this product. I would like to kindly suggest to the reviewer who said this CD makes him fall asleep, that he might want to get checked to see if he has a sleep disorder, or if he is simply not setting aside ample time for restful sleep at night. A healthy person getting adequate rest at night should be able to go into deep states of mental relaxation without dozing off, if not all the time, then most of the time.

I’m so glad you found this channel. I had panic attacks for a while back in the 90’s. I had a therapist who told me (when I felt it coming on during our session) to lie down on the floor and just let it come over me. That it was absolutely harmless physically and that by calling it’s bluff in a safe environment with a loving witness it would go away and not come back. He was right. Until this past month. My father died in my arms and while I thought I was strong enough to be there with him when he passed, it traumatized me in a profound way. Searching this new modality for help - lo and behold I find this charming therapist who has the same advice for me today that I received so many years ago. Thankful for the reminder and the memories of how well it worked. This will pass for all of us. I get real closed off and these were doom like attacks like min ate triggered by dying or fear of death and if I get any pains anywhere in my body I’m looking it up and I know that’s not good to do but I am so obsessed cuz I wanna catch anything quick incase it is!!!!!!! 😢 and the fact we do die and can go anytime scares meeeeee! I e gotten a lot closer to Jesus my Savior I pray HES yours too! Just look up that prayer of salvation and let HIM in HE only comforts my soul as I know HES the one in complete control.!!!!!!!!!! Anytime and where Jesus call on His Name and keep doing it. But for me that’s my triggers is health and feelings sensations ughhhhhhh 😢 and yes they kept coming on and I’m like I just got done feeling this ugh mine were triggered also by a thx gummy 8 hr Er visit twice once for actually trying weed and I got super bad so bad I could y breathe and I was so out of breath like and the. Once with a strong antibiotic I had this happens that one was also a 911 call and took 25-30 mins to come down but this time it wasn’t a er stay i was just back to myself where with the gummy and weed experiences that was paranoia and freaked out straight for 8-9 hrs in ER!! I can’t be near this stuff ever again!!!! Idky this is but my brain can’t handle it I get super scared and sickly nothing can stop it either but when I pray to God I know He’s helping me! and maybe allowed me to experience this to trust in HIM. But lessons learned I still have panic this eeek since this antibiotic was so awful to me ughhhh im on a different one now and this one is making me feel depressed and suicidal like and that’s not me at all. ! Since last week's video, every time I've felt my anxiety or panic start to take off I've said to myself "Oh, it's just that anxiety/panic, no need to freak out, just gonna ride the wave and be ok", and I'd continue doing whatever I was doing at the time- eg- I tend to struggle getting a deep breath and then I start to REALLY feel panicked, but the last time it happened I remembered what you said last week and I stopped "fighting" for that deep breath and just breathed normally while thinking "Meh, it's just panic, no biggy, I'll be fine" (and I intention took smaller breaths)...this helped, not every time, but...baby steps. 😁

In the last two weeks I’ve barely left my house, haven’t worked and am constantly on edge. I found the anxious truth podcast on Spotify and I’ve already made progress. I left my house today for a few mins and was relatively okay, and working out hasn’t been as hard. I still get shaky and have that feeling I can’t get a full breath but its much better overall. I also started feeling like I wasn’t in control of my body like i was watching myself do things rather than doing them. With that podcast and now these videos I’ve found tonight I actually have hope again.

I decided to go to the hospital and I was then injected with valium, which helped me to finally get a moment of sleep (I remember waking up on my bed, i have no idea how I got home but I FINALLY could think by myself, my mind was quiet).
Looking back now, I am able to recognise that that was the lowest I've ever been emotionally. A week later I went to see a therapist (it lasted 3 months, god it's expensive!), the short time i got with the therapist was enough for me to see that my biggest issue was pushing my feelings away. I refused to talk with myself, to think and to feel, I treated my conscience as my enemy. Now I am able to admit things to myself, to ask questions: "what worries me about this thing?", "what am i afraid of?".

It's way too intense, I can't handle it, I should've just skipped that class today! What do I do now? Should I leave the classroom? But I just can't! It's so embarrassing!" and it just got way, way worse. It was so overwhelming and intense. But then I just looked down on the desk, stopped thinking of the ways I can immediately reduce my anxiety, just completely "surrendered" to it, and then it was just gone. I looked up and I didn't feel anxious anymore. At all. The intensity of anxiety just dropped completely. It's mind-blowing how this works.

Thank you so much for these 3 videos on panic attacks; I have struggled with panic attacks on the highway for two years now, and after watching these videos, today while driving I stopped trying to fight the fear but instead accepted it and kept telling myself: "it's mega uncomfortable, but I can still drive" and that helped enormously.....thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart.

Great video. I indeed noticed that trying to trick your panic attack to go away only feeds it. I used to carry paper towels in my backpack to wipe my sweat. This only made me sweat even more. I was so embarrassed. The day I showed a coworker how stressed and sweaty I was, we laughed it off. It started to get better

I had a very bad one 3 years ago. Watched these CZcams's and also listened to Dr Claire Weekes.
I have been doing great. Until yesterday. Out of the blue, I thought I wasn't anxious. But WHAM I was overcome by a bad panic attack. Still feeling unwell today.
My face went numb, heavy arms, nausea, felt like fainting, shaking, extremely cold, my feet turned blue.
So why did I get a PA if I wasn't anxious?
It's ok to feel that way? I went over the hump of no return and couldn't do a thing. I had to ride it out. It was terrible.
Look, I knew I wasnt going to die. I've learnt that.
But the feelings I had were so bad.
I wish there was a switch I could flick to turn it off.
I'm disappointed as I've been working to get out of my anxiety over the past 3 years. I feel like I am back to square one 😔

This!! This is exactly what I needed to see and hear! I had a heart attack in 2012. In 2014, the anxiety, then panic attacks started…what if I’m having another heart attack, what if I die, maybe something else is wrong with me, maybe I’m about to have a stroke…on and on. I can’t tell you how much money I’ve spent, getting my symptoms checked out…therapy, 3 angiograms, medication, doctors upon doctors, etc. my most recent angiogram was performed just last winter. This doctor, when I told him about my anxiety and panic attacks (in order to avoid another costly procedure), asked me if I was a doctor? No. Then stop diagnosing yourself! So, another costly procedure, only to find Nothing wrong, again! Now I’m going to a different heart doctor, for the electrical part of my heart. I have nearly constant PVC’s, and PAC’s. I just took the week long heart monitor back yesterday. What do you suppose will be “wrong” with me this time? After watching the 3 part video, I’m going to say, “absolutely nothing”!!
Thank you so much!! Woot, bring on the feelings, anxiety and panic attacks!! I’m ready to live my life again ❤️

Great advice. Last night I had a number of panic attacks. Evening started GREAT - lots of fun and laughs with our kids and our dog, Then I took a hot bath and my heart rate became so fast and even faster the more I thought about it. Even though this was not my first panic attack I "forgot" that the best thing to avoid the panic attacks is to ignore them. Fear of the fear and checking and rechecking if everything is "safe and sure" is the worst cure, Ignore it.... Come what may. The less attention you give it the better. By ignoring them I was able to almost totally get rid of them for many years.

I’ve been an anxiety and panic attack sufferer for 40 years. I tried meds, which I hated. I had some success learning coping skills with different therapists over the years, but still didn’t feel like I had a grip on my disorder. Then, a couple years ago, I found your videos. Truly life changing! I purchased the course on retraining your parasympathetic nervous system during the 2020 Covid shutdown, which helped me find my sanity. Life gets busy, and I find myself taking care of everyone but me, and then those ugly anxieties start creeping in. The past month has been hard, and as I’ve been trying to turn my focus to my own health and well-being, I find myself drawn to your amazing advice. This particular advice on facing panic attacks, rather then trying to avoid them or trying to stop them, is SO thought provoking. I have a physical coming up in a couple weeks, and one of my biggest triggers is doctors offices. The part where they take my blood pressure and heart rate. The part that takes less than a minute. I fear the embarrassment of my rapid heart rate and spiked blood pressure, the comments from nurses who don’t know me, the worry that they’ll think something is really wrong with me and want to put me on meds, or send me to a cardiologist. The fear that they’ll think I’m a freak! After listening to these video, I suddenly look forward to facing it. Thank you for sharing all your wisdom.❤️ Having these positive affirmations and realizing I’m not alone, brings so much peace.❤️❤️

This series of panic attack videos is genius. I’m 46 and started having panic attacks when I was 19. They were so bad at one point that I essentially became agoraphobic. I was too afraid of having a heart attack during a panic attack, or at the very least, being humiliated as people watched me experience one. I don’t have them as often now, but it’s because I avoid ‘scary’ situations. I still haven’t figured out all of my triggers, but one is definitely driving on freeways, and another is being stuck in a situation or place that I can’t easily remove myself from (example 1: If I have an important work meeting with 50 coworkers, I bring on a panic attack simply because I start thinking about how embarrassing it would be to have one).
(Example 2: I don’t drive freeways because I’m afraid I’ll have a panic attack and no immediate exit from the freeway). As I said, I don’t have the attacks often now, but it’s because I avoid these situations. I’ve even taken PTO days to avoid large meetings. I need to continue working on facing my fears, it sounds like. These videos have been incredibly helpful. Thank you!

I'm 61 and have had panic attacks since I was about 10 years old. It has caused me to avoid and miss out on a lot of things in life. Like you, my worst experiences are with driving on the interstate or in a city environment where there's a lot of traffic and no way to exit quickly - and bridges, especially high and/or long ones. I'm okay if my husband is driving (unless we get stopped on a bridge or if traffic gets backed up and we're stopped for any period of time), but if I have to drive myself, I'll take a longer route if it means I can avoid the highway or a bridge. And though I work from home now and it's made life a lot less stressful, I used to hate meetings, too - especially ones where we were in a hot, stuffy, closed room, which was the absolute worst! I used to keep a small ice pack in the pocket of my jacket or sweater so I could keep my hand on it and then transfer the cold to the back of my neck with my fingers when things started to get overwhelming. I still do that on long car rides, too - and always keep an ice cold drink beside me. It seems to help take the edge off. But know you're not alone. Sometimes when I'm driving I actually think about how many of the other people on the road are feeling the same way I am, and it helps a little!

This was incredibly helpful. I am in therapy and my therapist suggested that I embrace my panic and stop trying to fight it because it seems that fighting never helps. Well, I have been putting it into practice for a week or two and it has truly helped, thought today I was not able to overcome and just trying to remind myself that recovery is not a straight line, but it’s hard.
I have had anxiety since I was 12. I came from a Hispanic household that never considered mental health an actual issue. When I went to college I went to a therapist and they diagnosed me with anxiety. Tried everything under the sun, yoga, cutting out caffeine, cutting out sugar, exercise, meditation, everything the internet told me to do to reduce anxiety and it helped…for a bit. Cut to last December when I got diagnosed with ADHD + panic. Now I am learning my adhd was actually what exacerbated my anxiety and guided me right into panic. Since my anxiety diagnosis in 2011 to Dec 2023 I thought there was something wrong with me because anxiety treatment was not working.
Now I am just trying to take it one step at a time, Give myself grace, and realize 20 years of mistreatment will not go away in 4 months.
But yes, some days I cannot see an outcome past my panic attack. I catastrophize to the point where I become paralyzed and cannot imagine a moment past panic attack and I fear that I will never get out of it. It’s truly terrifying but now I realize that I have just given it too much power over me and I need to embrace it.
