When I saw this video I said out loud, "Yay, another harvest video!" and hubby said, "That's like an 'unboxing video' for gardeners, isn't it." lol! Hope y'all had a lovely day.
It is! Do you make your own harvest videos? I do. Winters here are long and cold so I watch a lot of harvest content then.
Might be just tormenting myself too, lol.
I'm 37 year's old I learned in 2020 that I have a green thumb and passionate about gardening, I've been watching your video's since then, you truly have inspired me on my best day's and my worst, THANK YOU Roots and Refuge
This. Agreed. 🎉
Same here, just a couple years older :D
Thrilled for all of you and delighted to hear it. Many blessings everyone.
Similar boat, though I was watching Jess before that.
So glad yo have you with us!
When I was young, I would go to the row of carrots Dads garden. I would pick one, give it a quick rinse from the hose, and chomp into it. The taste of carrots straight from the garden reminds me of Dad.
The part where you talk about your video from 5 years ago, picking the same things, but how different your life was then, like getting ready to go to your husband's late mom, and how much can change in 5 years time, but also how much stays the same... That caught me out of nowhere - got tears in my eyes! So true.
This was the first spot I could actually comment on because there were no comment sections on the screen.
I have lots of tomatoes but none are red yet.
We always looked forward to my Mammaw’s homemade chocolate pudding and biscuits each Sunday after church. I miss her so much.
Missing our parents never goes away. Praying in JESUS'S NAME AMEN ❤️ helps me alot.
Sending hugs and prayers 🙏🙏🙏🀄💖✨✨🍃🛐🍃✝️🀄🙏
My biggest tomato was also a pineapple and was 1lb 12.5oz!
I roast all my tomatoes to make spaghetti sauce… I just put them in a 425 degree oven and roast until skins start to turn black. Then I pull off the skins and drain the seeds and immersion blend them. I’ll add onions, peppers, zucchini or what ever I have an abundance of at the time 😊
That sounds really really good !! Many blessings everyone.
Love using baking soda and vinegar instead of harmful products for our health. Thank you for helping more ppl learn about simple, healthy and effective cleaning solutions 💗
I just cant believe how they have access to just such a large variety of fruits , trees and plants. Feels like they live in paradise. Fresh produce right on their door step , surrounded by nature and enjoyed together in a close knit family and community! All the money in the world cant buy what they have.
Sweet Jess,
Nice harvests on the peppers, and small tomatoes. I remember making pasta with one can of tomato sauce, and spices in order to feed my son, and myself 29 years ago. The pasta cost me 39 cents, and the small can of tomato sauce was 36 cents. Groceries were tight, my 1st husband, and I were divorced, I was struggling to pay rent, utilities, and the debt we were left with. The things we do to make sure our children were fed, and had a warm bed to sleep in. I wouldn't give up that time of my life. I considered it a true lesson from the good Lord.
Happy Independence Day!
Life is good!!!
Now onto checking out your salsa recipe.
Been there done that! So glad you made it through and used it as a life lesson! That’s what I’ve also tried to do, and I think it’s made me a stronger person than the ones who tried to beat me down! They failed!
@@catofthecastle1681 Thank you! We all are much stronger 😊
Our lives are so much better.
Happy 4th! My little is a firework baby so we celebrate the 4th and her today! Its alwyas tons of fun and she thinks the fireworks are just for her! Lol she turned 5 todya and is my youngest of our 5 kids.
Hope you all have a blessed, fun and safe 4th!
Happy Independence Day, Jess. From the bottom of my heart, thank you and Miah for all the inspiration you bring to us. You are helping so many of us become more independent!❤️🇺🇸🌻
I have a newborn and I have not been as committed to my garden. But my garden is committed to me, I have so many volunteers this year. Cheers to the cucumber!! Happy 4th!
I harvested a two pounder today myself! The whole dinner was raised, processed and grown by us! Pork and peppers, roasted tators, fried okra, and you know it...sliced mators. Good eatin'!
Mustard gravy. My German Mom used German yellow mustard or Frenches. Mixed with milk, flour, salt & pepper.
Drops of hot sauce for flavoring. Gravy over white mashed potatoes and hard boiled eggs. Topped with gravy. We loved this. You could
Salt boil cut potatoes, drain off. Dryer potatoes if you like.
Simple and quick meal.
Love chocolate gravy. YUM
Tomato 🍅 salad cuke salads are summer time food. Fabulous. Enjoy FROM SE MICHIGAN. Thank you soldiers for INDEPENDENCE DAY
Beautiful cherry tomato harvest!
One of my garden traditions is to grill a variety of sliced veggies, like eggplant, zucchini, long carrot slices, onions and peppers then make a big thick veggie hoagie . Top with garlic aioli or Italian dressing. Yum 🤤
So happy to see you with lots of tomatoes.. it seems right!
I just made bread for the first time😂😂 A bit too much flour, rather dense. But scrumptious with butter and honey! Next time I will not use the whole amount of flour! There will be a next time❤❤❤
👍👍👍 on 'next time's. Many blessings everyone.
Rolly pollies were eating my cucumbers, it took me protecting the seedlings with a plastic cup until they were big enough to survive on their own to be successful. Third time was the charm!
Every time I go into the garden, I see the water system that my dad and I installed. He went home to God in 2021.
Thank you Jess .I do look forward to your videos daily .You didn’t have to today ..but I’m grateful. Happy Independence Day to you and your family.
Oh my goodness! I’m so jealous!! I miss homegrown vegetables!!
That ride down the drive in the side by side brought so much joy to me heart ❤️
Hubby is now addicted to basil iced tea - no sweetener. I've been mixing lemon and lime. Yum. Thanks for sharing that!
Happy Independence Day!
The chocolate gravy memories!! I was sooo happy to see that! My husband is northern and always laughs when I speak about moms chocolate gravy. Well my oldest is now two year old and we are planning to make it for the first time this weekend and I’m excited to pass on that core childhood memory.
Cherry tomatoes are my favorite. Love the sungolds. Many do not make it in the house 😋
I LOVE your gardens!!! My gardens are my happy, peaceful place, especially since my Mom passed away last Spring. She and I shared a love of 'playing' in the dirt, so I feel closest to her in my gardens. And, she sends me a cooling breeze, now and then. I miss you, Mom! 🥰 Thank you, Jess, for continuing to bring my gardening memories with my Mom, alive, every day. 🥰🥰
Love your videos. So enjoy the magnificence of your garden! How have you been feeling. A while back you were having some health issues. Have you resolved them? I hope so because you are such to delight to watch.
I can’t wait to be cherry tomato rich! I can totally relate to having a time in your life when cherry tomatoes just aren’t in the grocery budget!
Oh, when I saw the headline I immediatly thought of a tomato sandwich video with Ben!
You go mama bear! I look forward to your videos. I've been following you since the pandemic. You are such an encouragement to me. Your effervescent personality spurs me on to be a better gardener!!! Keep up the fabulous work!!!
That's one Big tomato! Enjoy you day! Happy Independence day!! I have tomatoes on plants! Up here in the north we run later but excited with the growth so far! Enjoy the fruits of your labors!!
Ooo,thats a Beauty 🐦.
Yall emjoy your yummy 4th Food😊 !
JO JO IN VT 💞
Good to see you!!
Nice harvest, guys!
My biggest tomato was 2 pounds 4oz. 3 brandywines fused together.
Happy Fourth of July!!! Today I picked my first tomato of the year. So exciting.
Oh my...chocolate gravy is something of a special occasion thing...I've lived all my life in the deep south..never had it until we moved to north Alabama....its still a special occasion thing and awesome with a side of southern crispy bacon...a perfect balance of sweet and salty...js
Love me some Roots and Refuge Love and hugs from Pennsylvania Sincerly Melody
We haven't had enough sun to even grow weeds...lol!
Happy Independence day!❤🇺🇸
Oh man I love chocolate gravy. My dad would make it for us every Christmas morning when we were growing up. Now I like to make it for the grandkids.
You are the reason that I am growing a whole bed of a truck Shishito peppers lol well and the fact that my Mexican husband knows how to make them amazingly lol 5:36
My biggest tomato ever was about ten years ago. My boss’s ol’ fishing buddy would share with me tomato seedlings from an “Amish” Heirloom that had been in his family for years. It was a good, fairly prolific addition to my garden each year. One year, I followed the growth of what promised to be a monster tomato, and while still green, I fashioned a sling for that big boy, suspended from the sturdy tomato cage. I picked it one hot afternoon in August, raced into the kitchen and grabbed the scale. It topped out at a big 2 lbs. 14 oz. The interesting thing, though, That particular plant had only one other tomato, weighing it at 7 ounces.
All the plant's energy went into the big tomato. Many blessings all.
💚 Happy 4th of July, Independence Day. I'm in the garden right now, planting petunias and Alyssum, a few squash and Marigolds. Love being in my garden and watching you in yours at the same time! I continue to be inspired by you, thanks so much. 💚
I love how you have such awesome holiday traditions for so many holidays ❤
Happy Fourth of July. That tomato reminds me of my Grandfather's garden and the enormous tomatoes we ate all summer.
I'm bringing in my mators by the basket load almost every day now! I love this time of year. While I wait for enough to do a canning session (I don't know if I'mma do sauce, salsa, or what first yet) I'll be canning up the 25 pounds of tators hub dug me this afternoon. I pop my mators in the freezer and it makes peeling such an easy task! Much better than that old blanching method, if you ask me! And for all the cherries, I just buzz them with my immersion blender. Works perfect!
I was just wondering how dehydrated or freezedried cherry tomatoes would be???? Many blessings everyone.
Happy, birthday, USA! Jess in tomato heaven:)))
My older cousin use to make us chocolate gravy, what a lovely memory.
Happy Independence Day to all!
I harvest in my Rachael Ray Trash bowls too!
Hi Jess Happy 4th!❤️🇺🇸
Hello Jess! Love you even from afar! . Thank you for all you are as a person and all that Roots & Refuge provides. Ever since watching your video on getting Lulu the dog, I named my kitten "Lulu"
Happy 4th July
My husband and nephew and I love your salsa. We ran out last year but I hope I can make enough this year to hold us over. Why do I garden? I love getting my hands in the dirt but i also have a nephew that has such a high metabolic rate that growing food to feed him was necessary. And fun too. God gives good things to those who put their hands to the work.
I had about 40 volunteer tomato plants this year, gave some away and thinned out and replanted the rest
Chocolate gravy! My sister and I used to spend the night at our grandparents' house all the time and we always made grandma make biscuits and chocolate gravy. Of course, she didn't mind, her sweet too was bigger than either of ours lol.
The asparagus popping up still 😂😂
Happy Independence Day, everyone!
Remember: “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
II Corinthians 3:17
Im growing shishito peppers for the first time! Thank you for the recipe!!
Thank you for always sharing Jess, Happy 4th of July!!!!🇺🇲❤️🤍💙
cherry tomato rich!
I love roasting the veggies for salsa. My largest this year was a Giant Syrian that weighed 2.3 lbs.
I always see volunteers as God's provision (most of the time before I even knew I needed it).
My husband and I harvested our corn today, we're having Root Vegtables for dinner!🌽
Happy, healthy fourth of July, Sowards. GOD BLESS AMERICA. AMEN!
Bless you Jess !
Thanks for sharing your memories with us Jess. I especially like how you appreciate where you are now by saying you're "tomato rich". God sends us many blessings we just need to choose to see them.😊
Cherry tomato rich , love it!
We harvested today too! I was making spaghetti and meatballs. I needed to harvest parsley and basil so I decided to pick cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. The hubby picked more strawberries (it’s been an ongoing battle with the Japanese beetles destroying my strawberry plants 😩).
I LOVE being cherry tomato rich! I used to always buy cherry tomato pints too and now I don’t have to. Love this time of year! 😍
I’m super happy that the meatballs and sauce were all made with herbs and veg from our garden - tomato sauce from last season, garlic harvested a month ago, and parsley and basil today.
I always get so giddy about cooking with food from the garden. I know it’s 1000% organic bc I grew it and nothing beats that feeling of going from garden to table.
I’ve been cooking for decades and to cook using the food I’ve grown myself never gets old. I always get all excited about it as I’m eating the food and watching my family eat. I never knew it would be so rewarding.
My biggest EVER was a .8 something, ""Dr Witchies"" 🤣(Thanks to YOU!!) Thanks for all the tips! (And the Love, 💚💚!)
First year growing and I can't wait to have a first tomato harvest. I'm in zone 4 so it will be a bit still.
Me too. Barely have Green tomatoes. Grand Blessings everyone.
Congratulations on first garden. enjoy every minute of it. Many blessings everyone.
My salad consists of beet greens, Swiss chard, lemon basal, mixed salad greens from my garden. I also had pickled Eggs added. I made a strawberry syrup from strawberry tops and maple syrup. I did add store bought cheese and cherry tomatoes. Delicious 😋 here in Michigan these are the only harvest that is ready.
Hi I'm in S.E. MI. Favorite place is U.P.
Not even one minute into the video and I’ve gone and ordered a stone bar pan. Been waiting 10 years for this. Happy birthday to me. Thanks Jess !
Happy 4th🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Love the patriotic outfit, Jess 🇺🇸😊💚
I harvested from my lettuces today.. loved it
I am about 2 weeks behind you on the tomatoes. I have had some cherry tomatoes that got ripe, but we ate them off the vine. I have some larger slicers ripening up now. I have 64 tomato plants this year. I love your harvest. Happy fourth of july.
Love your videos so much. You are so inspiring to me. My daughter found you first & then shared with me. I wish I could come hang out with you & learn more. Some day maybe I will be able to go to a homesteading event. God Bless you & Thank you for all you do
Thank you for taking time too make a vlog and post it today. Happy Independence Day! Blessings to the Sowards.
Awesome tour of garden everything is growing so good enjoy your bounty nothing like picking it fresh n earing it Happy 4th to you Miah n boys
You're so right about the okra! I've been harvesting every morning for about a week now.... But I'm just starting to get my first blushing tomato here in Alabama... Your tomatoes look so beautiful 😍
Happy 4th, Jess, Miah and kids!🇺🇲🎆🎇❤️
Your tomatoes are beautiful! Tomatoes are a staple in my garden !!!!
How ironic is it that I looked up both the Shishto Pepper and Roasted Tomato Salsa recipes on you website today BEFORE I watched the video? I also picked a 1+ lb tomato today 😍 Tis' the Season! ❤
That’s a beautiful tomato
I think my largest was a Mortgage Lifter last year and that was only about 1.5 lbs, mostly because I hate cat-faced tomatoes and have been known to pick the bloom off. This year, I've got my eye on a Vintage Wine that is huge and a Dark Galaxy which came from a bloom the size of a dandelion - crazy!
Happy Independence Day! 🎉🇺🇸🎉 And Happy Freedom From Disappointing Tomatoes! 🎉🍅🎉
Great pepper plants!
I have never weighed a tomato. lol I have definitely made cuke/tomato/onion salad! And not roasted salsa but roasted tomato sauce for spaghetti, that gets rave reviews! I have also never succession planted but I'm very happy to have youtube, when James (the gardening channel with James) suggested that maybe I hadn't started my squash yet and that I could plant that in July, he made my day! So I certainly don't have any cukes, the chipmunks have been eating the plants right off my porch and they have never made it to the garden. The ones direct, all died too. Let's go Round#2
Happy Independence Day ❤
happy 4th
Currently my little third story balcony container garden here in Nashville is producing it’s head off in bush green beans. I planted ten seeds in a 20 gallon grow bag with good quality potting soil and may end up with over a gallon of green beans! I’m thrilled. They’re blooming their little heads off and setting pods a lightning speed. (They’re the Contender variety which I love. Tender beans and very productive plants that seam to take heat and humidity and keep on blooming without a beat as long as you keep them watered.) I have another 20 galling grow bag with three dwarf okra plants in it that finally have buds. Apparently these should only get 36 inches max which is much more manageable for a balcony. I also have a third 20 gallon grow bag with two bush style cucumber plants (I think they’re called “bush master”) which are about ready to bloom and a hybrid bush-type tomato I bought as a start from the store. It’s supposed to be high yield multi-purpose fruits with disease resistance and fruit set at high temps (called Amelia). So far I have 8 tomatoes on it, all green still, and over a dozen more blossoms currently blooming. It looks like my little experiment of a balcony garden (which only gets sun from noon on) is going to be a success!
19 oz today! Cherokee Purple :0) Oh, and those brown butter tomatoes were insanely good! Thanks for that idea.
Brown butter tomatoes ???? Blessings everyone.
The tomato you picked almost looked heart shaped ❤ that's so cool
Happy 4th. America is great!
Happy 4th!
Happy I see video for you❤❤❤
Very jealous of your cherry tomato fortune.
Food prep/ideas for preserving and using the harvest are my favorite this time of the year. Thank you!!
I so love and enjoy watching you and sweet Mia hope y’all have a wonderful 4th of July
Happy 4th Beautiful Soul!! To you and your family!
