This Bachmann Class 47 Diesel locomotive is a very nice looking model. Unfortunately, the price of 200 plus ponds is just too expensive which I have to agree with you Sam. Overall, the Class 47 is a pretty good looking model.
Look it's swings and roundabouts, I've picked up this morning new same model, Weathered and sound fitted, If I deduct the cost of the chip and weathering the locos cost £100! Cheaper than Sam's £140 it depends what you want.
Totally agree with your review. Nothing wrong with the older version and the prices are just ridiculous. Plenty of new Bachmann releases seem to be getting discounted very quickly, so it seems that people are voting with their wallets while Accurascale clear-up :)
The bachmann Windhoff MPV is the biggest shocker, £80 first time around now it's not far off £280 plus for dcc ready, the sound fitted RRP is over £400!!!!! Bachmann are bloody piss taking robbers!
I’m a massive 47 fan and have a couple of these new tooled dcc fitted locos. They really have captured the character of the prototype in the look, feel, and somehow performance of the models. It always feels like I have a couple of full size engines that have been shrunk down to 4mm scale running around the layout. The sounds are superb too (if slightly too loud sometimes). I didn’t go for the delux models because I don’t particularly miss the rotating roof fans and the cab glazing, whilst very clever, isn’t to my taste and looks a bit over scale somehow. I was surprised the review sample derailed; neither of mine ever have.
It’s is a great loco. I agree about Bachmann prices being totally ridiculous. I was lucky and got my Intercity version for £160 with a DCC decoder fitted from a guy on eBay who had bought it (new tooling) but wanted to change his layout era and was selling up to fund his new layout. I love mine
My grandfather was an engineer at Brush in Loghbrough and built the 47s. He also had to travel to Crew to train their engineers on how to build their batches. My mum once told me that as a young girl he would take her to work and she used to play amongst the locos while they were on the production line.

Great video! It is so sad that Bachmann’s prices are so outrageous these days, this model is awesome, but it is no better than what Accurascale are making for so much cheaper. I actually thought about one of the DCC Sound BR Blue ones, but I’ll really have to think about it since the price is so high, as I might just get an Accurascale 37. I like Bachmann’s models, and think their a great company that have really improved recently, and their now much better than Hornby. On the note of the lighting, I think it’s fair that there is no engine room lighting and cab lighting on analog as you wouldn’t normally want those on. Edit: have the derailing issues stopped?

Hi, great video review, I got mine from Hatton’s for £148 a few weeks ago, I’m very happy with mine, I purchased the roof fan unit from Bachmann spares along with some other parts I needed for other loco’s, it was ok to fit the unit which has self tapping screws, there is a position on the main pcb for the power wires, once you fit a decoder the lighting is awesome and the fans are very quiet once activated, you can also increase the motor performance as well, don’t forget to remove the motor suppressor’s if dcc is going to be permanent. Bachmann & Robin customers if given a chance! Their prices are shocking beyond belief if you don’t see them in sales or reduction sections at retailers, thanks for sharing.

@@SamsTrains Hi, it was £30, sounds a lot but once you see and feel the quality you won’t be disappointed, comes with the self tapping screws, it fits straight onto the raised metal lugs on the chassis which are above the pcb board, it is a plug and play twin fan unit, remove the non working original twin fans from the shell.
Prices are getting silly now. Believe it or not, the infamous Hornby Lowmac with the big Coca Cola bottle is back on the Hornby website for pre-order (to adults), but now it's increased in price to £29.99 😮
A fool and their money are soon parted, Hornby have fallen so far with the overpriced crap they sometimes churn out, you can see why they are in trouble, expensive non need gimmicks. 😞
Hi Sam, fair and unbiased review as normal. Bit puzzled to see the loco slot into 6th as only one Accurascale loco (92) was above it. Then I realised the 37 was missing from the list (having checked it’s video that’s now 1st place). Assume that’s due to video release order? Best
I spent a wet afternoon looking at some of your videos, including the one where you and Cloe face your critics. I am a fan of Sam's Trains although not all videos are relevant to me including this one. The one most relevant to me so far is the one where you show us your first experience with an airbrush. This has given me the confidence to ask my wife to buy me one for Christmas and allowed me to settle on using acrylic paint. Here's to the next ten years, though at the age of 80 now, I may not make it with you. Many thanks for all your efforts.
I think the loco is impressive, but that can't excuse the price?! £239.95?! I remember when I got my first train set about 6 years ago, it had mallard with 3 coaches and a controller, a large oval of track and a trakmat for £130 - the world's gone mad!

Hi Sam. The classification class 47/0 does not refer to the 'originals' but rather those that only had a steam boiler for train heating after TOPS numbering was introduced. In fact, the first 20 prototypes all had electric train heating (and steam heat boilers too) so we're numbered 47401-420 as part of class 47/4 the classification for those with electric train heating. Most of the rest which received this kind of heating did so after they were built, hence the somewhat haphazard numbering of the class. There was also class 47/3 which had no heating at all which were built solely for freight use, except in summer. By the 1980s with electric heating becoming the standard class 47/0 was mostly confined to freight work as well. There was also class 47/7 for push-pull fitted locos and a sub-set of class 47/4 renumbered to 478xxx for locos fitted with long-range fuel tanks.
Lovely loco tbh. Stiff priced initially of course but a few remarks from our side if we may. You seem to heavily value features and details over build quality which very much has shown earlier with Accurascale models in our opinion. AS, with all respect and from our continental perspective, are rather cheaply and nastily put together by design, and aren't exactly free from manufacturing errors. B however always seem to come out without design and production faults in your reviews, and they are solidly put together. Yet, you don't seem to value all this as such. QA does cost money Sam. However, that all said. We think we could live with the equivalent of £ 170 for this loco, and adding a Next decoder would bring her towards ~£ 215. That would be quite reasonable for a hassle free loco like this we thought actually. The S-curve like in your layout is of course a big no-no for serious modellers, but we do understand you wanting to expose weaknesses. Cheerio.
Something I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on, Sam would be modern RTR prices. I myself have gotten back into HO scale a little in the last year and I have wanted to get some recently produced models, but the prices some manufactures are asking is just crazy in my opinion. One thing I have done however is gotten into buying second hand models that I couldn't get over a decade ago when I was younger, and they seem far more affordable for me. I don't know, I feel a video from you talking about the modern RTR prices could make for a great discussion.
haha I guess I've made my thoughts on them quite clear in this and a few other videos - generally I don't mind the high prices, but the models must justify the prices in their quality and features. Here, that wasn't the case. Second hand is definitely a good way to go! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video Sam! If I can make an American loco recommendation, the brand new New York Central Hudson from Bachmann. They are die cast and are amazing price for what you get. They are sounded from the get go. I will say it did take some reorganizing of the functions and adding some like adding realistic momentum and moving brakes and brake release to the top 10 functions. Still an amazing engine, well worth it. If you’d prefer the flashier version Bachmann just announced the streamlined Dreyfus look which will be die cast, sounded, and offer each of the driver looks (boxpok or Scullin.)
Hi Sam, I’m always comforted when my gut feelings about a loco are later backed up by your review. I’ve steered clear of these 47s on price grounds. Worryingly, though, an upcoming new Heljan Class 47 is on my wish list. I suspect it won’t be as good as the Bachmann but the RRP is £249.95 for DCC ready (£212.95 with retailer’s discount).
Yeah absolutely right - it'll have to be the best Heljan loco ever by a country mile to justify that price... I won't be buying one until they come down in price very significantly. its been a long long time since I bought a new Bachmann loco for near rrp. Last one I bought was from the same place as this, an ROD 2-8-0 loco for just £116.
My first setup, getting back into the hobby as an adult, was an old Hornby Class 47 from 1979. At the time I couldn't justify buying new and fancy stock, so I got a few things second hand. Of course I stayed with it and have a couple of different things now, but I do still have that old class 47. IT has the first version of the Ringfield motor, so it will always remain on DC, but every so often I still pull it out with the MkII coaches I got with it and run around on DC, even though I mainly model DCC now.
Regardless of price Bachmann are the kings when it comes to Diesels. Pour as much as you like over Accurascale but who's to say further down the road they won't become another ViTrains. At least with Bachmann the consumer is assured of longevity. As previously said 'You get what you pay for'.
Good points on this review, I can't believe anyone would pay the extra for the SFX models, also why no driver, the older Bachmann 47's of which I have several had a driver fitted.
Hi Sam really thorough review. I treated myself to the I K Brunel version from Kernow. It had to go back after two months due to a faulty decoder which I have to admit was sorted very quickly although slightly reluctantly they sent out a replacement model. I think at the full rrp price one would expect better however I am very pleased with it was a substantial investment that took some consideration. It has no trouble hauling 8 or 9 mk2 coaches on the layout on the larger radius curves but I will check on some smaller radius curves I think a lot of modellers will be looking to accurascale for future releases when it comes to price and quality.
Not the only loco which has been heavily marked down. Email from Rails today, O gauge Heljan GWR razor edge railbus, now down to about £250 from an RRP of £600! Pays to wait, unless you are going to want a popular livery.

Sam, like plastic model kits, make your choice and either buy it or don't. I wanted a Royal Class Eduard Focke Wulf 190 kit. I wasn't going to pay £150 plus. Found one on EBay a month or so ago for £70. If you think it's too expensive then don't buy it
It is an absolutely great model by bachmann just like their new 37 is even though the 47 did come before the 37, to be honest I don’t really care whether its overpriced because in my opinion it isn’t because what you are getting is an overall fantastic model of the class 47, I am definitely thinking about getting one of these 47s as currently I only have a Lima one and old heljan one.
It would be kinda funny if all the manufacturers decided to band together and lower the quality of models to a degree where locomotives with this detail are considered high spec and bring the price up, I wonder if a revolution would begin lol
Who remembers a few years back Bachmann loco prices got to £100 ?, lots of people said would not or could not afford them prices, wonder how many did stop buying, 0:21 at todays prices £100 would be a bargain.
Ya, a lot of those had three pole motors, square slots for bearings, no flywheel or tender pickups, a complete lack of torch, and some quality issues with detail. Their diesels have always been great, but until around 10 years ago, Bachmann’s steam locos kinda sucked, and even if some of those were £100, I don’t know if they would be bargains. Bachmann have really come along way, but their prices have gone up, which is too bad.
Some of the CLASS 47s I have seen were often used for Steam Charters, whenever I go up to Cardiff to watch steam trains pull in. D1935 is one of them when travelling alongside No. 46100 The Royal Scot, and D1944 was travelling alongside No. 70000 ‘Britannia’.
This is the review I've been WAITING FOR. Lovely locomotive i have acquired this locomotive for my collection. Great MINDS think ALIKE. A bit expensive but Worth it. This is the best version of the Class 47 by a country mile. I thought long and hard about the Heljan Brush but decided AGAINST it because of Heljans very poor offerings and that's also very expensive. Are you going to review the Heljan 47 for comparison? I am a BRUSH TYPE 4 FANATIC i am very pleased that Bachmann have retooled the Brush. Thank you Sam marvellous video , well worth the wait.

I'd love to hear Bachmann try to explain why the DCC-ready Class 47 is £239 at the RRP. As for the idea of waiting until a new model comes down in price before buying one, I'm trying to do that with Hornby's newly-tooled LNER P2. Last week, I managed to get a slightly older Bachmann 47 for a reasonable £104.17, and incredibly, I only had to wait one week for her to arrive in the post (it usually takes longer for these things to reach New Zealand). Mine is 47209 'Herbet Austin', and she's in a similar livery to the one in this review, albeit with a different sector's logo.
Hi Sam, a handsome diesel! What is it with certain manufacturers and their pricing? They remain bullish in spite of so many calling them out on excessive rrp. I suspect they aren't losing anything at the (right) price you paid, and so such a shame as our hobby is getting so expensive and pricing new and indeed existing modellers out of the market... Clear torque issues . It's about holding your nerve if you want to wait to pick one up at the right price. I have several models on pre order because they fit my needs for the layout, so I have to pay my money and take my choice. Cheers for a great review as always.

The duplicate locomotive is the Class 37. One in BR blue and yellow, the other in Reigonal Railways blue and white With so many models putting extra features only available in DCC Sound models, I kinda want to see you look at one in the near future.
At least 4 class 47s are still in service with mainline freight operators amd have not been rebuilt as 57s. A fr cry from the origional amount. But still going strong
Once again, I applaud you for holding a major manufacturer to account for its rip-off pricing policies. Your approach of "wait and see" before buying is the only leverage us enthusiasts have in order to put pressure on the manufacturers to adopt more sensible pricing policies. Great loco though. I`ve heard a few modellers at shows say that Bachmann have `dumbed` the motors down by not using as much copper in the winding process. A friend of mine has both the old and new versions of the class 47 and the difference with haulage is like night and day.

I have one and it's very sensitive to track imperfections. Much more than any other loco I have. Features are good but I would not recommend getting one
Great video. I find now we can only buy DCC Ready or DCC Sound fitted. I find it hard to fit decoders and cannot afford DCC Sound fitted. Hattons etc don’t seem to just fit a decoder anymore. Keep up the great Videos.
I would like you to change your rating system for haulage. If a model can pull prototypical loads then it is perfectly adequate. The fact that this loco can haul 44 coaches shows that it absolutely fine and to mark it down again one that can pull a few more is nonsensical.
Hi Sam I've just found out you can get a T gauge train set, locos and rolling stock. Is much smaller than Z gauge or 1/3rd of N gauge. One demonstration shows it running around a mugwith the oval being about 300mm long. There is a retailer called Tgauge based in Scotland. Their cheapest set is £130. Please can you do a review, thank you👍
I’ve got several of the older 47 models and am in analogue, they are great runners, don’t slow on curves and the lights come on before the loco moves. Got one of the new 47s and it slows on curves and the lights don’t come on until the model is moving. I wonder if the new Bachmann models is now optimised for DCC. Lovely loco but way overpriced at RRP. A lot of the new Bachmann locos are now being discounted to a more sensible price.
Although the Bachmann 47 is premium priced; why hasn’t anybody looked a bit further and praised the Diecast bogie frames? The body and bogies are screwed together. Which means the Bachmann 47 will likely be solid and serviceable for a long time. The Accurascale models are cheaply clipped together from plastic parts. So I love the solid construction of the Bachmann. The premium pricing structure - blue tinted cab windows and working radiator fans on deluxe models only - is really annoying as it made them cost in excess of £300 RRP. I bought mine from Rails of Sheffield for a little less. It is one of my very best diesels but I cannot justify buying many at this price point. Why did Bachmann have to charge so much?
Sam I really think you need to quote Bachman’s retailer price. Bachmann are very good with their widespread retailer network and give a 15% discount and have really good form for supporting local retailers unlike others even if they did have a falling out with Hattons over the 66. You can’t even buy at RRP from Bachmann online. unlike Hornby. The only places I’ve ever seen RRP are charities eg steam railways and even then it’s often not RRP. I think comparing the actual price is far more representative and meaningful. With the class 47 I’ve only got Lady Diana Spencer but went for the SFX model when it was reduced to £240. At that price I feel it’s a 2023 bargain to be honest. Probably is worth a fair bit more. I’d be happy up to the £270 point with that spec so say £170 DCC ready. Otherwise really happy with it.
I do quote the retailer price - I make a point of quoting the RRP, typical retailer price, and in this case the reduced price I paid. Your claim is inaccurate - some retailers, my local for instance, do charge RRP. Even at a 15% discount from RRP, this is still farcically expensive compared with the likes of accurascale, so the point stands.
@@SamsTrains sorry I misspoke as you do quote the reduced the 15% discount and the price you paid so apologies on that. I think the point I was trying get at is the vast majority will not pay RRP whereas for say the Accurascale 37 it’ll be RRP as they don’t appear to have quite the same set up as Bachmann currently. Therefore to use the RRP to bash them seems to be slightly OTT vs bashing them (rightly) with the price most pay (though I’m surprised to hear that your local retailer doesn’t get the 15% discount) as Bachman’s network is the most extensive I’m aware of, going well beyond the big box shifters. Obviously, you are quite right in saying that the point still stands around the Bachmann 47/37 being worse value than the Accurascale 37 and Bachman’s pricing feels off. Doubly so as the SFX should be included with all versions. I think part of the issue Bachmann appear to have is that they are hamstrung by having to use their own factory’s rather than being more competitive. This does have silver lining that the finish is always top notch but comes at a literal expense. That being said they still have pricing issues with EFE so maybe they just have large overheads / more greedy than Accurascale.
That’s no problem, I understand. I’m not saying my local doesn’t get Bachman’s discount, only that they sell to the customer at RRP, presumably making additional profit. As far as I know Bachman’s trade price for a product doesn’t vary between retailers… I think there would be uproar if they gave some a better price than others!
Great honest review as always Sam ! I only buy Roco and Piko locos and for this price you paid for that 47 I would expect sound and super detail plus continental postage from German / Poland model shops ! Rip off Britain sadly.
Yet again I fully agree with you Sam. Ridiculous price that I just would not go near. I do think the bogies should have a splash of colour. You rarely see them in all black.
A 14.2 mm back-to-back is not operational for me. That spacing WILL ride up over the guard rails ln a Peco bullhead turnout as one the flange on one wheel forces the other up. This is an ongoing problem with manor manufacturers, including the largest, to the point where I will first check the gauge on any new loco or wagon. I suggest that the actual wheel flange spacing be checked against a standard gauge, similar to the one that the NMRA provides.
@@SamsTrains I’d like to see one! You don’t need to bother lining stuff up though, as that probably took a long time, then again it probably helped you get an opportunity to organize your collection.
Too bad they didn't make a DCC version for the price. (And sell an analog version for less.) It would be really cool to see it sitting at the station with the engine warming up and the lights on. Then the conductor shouts "All Aboard" and the bell goes Clang Clang. Then Whooo.. Whooo.. and off it goes, accelerating smoothly to top speed, ringing its bell from time to time and sounding its horn when approaching other trains at the points... But I guess we can always dream :-)

The pricing of things like this are why some people believe that a lot of these manufacturers may be putting prices sky high in order for the inevitable discount prices to seem like a bargain.. when in fact it’s a normal price you’re paying! Yesteryear one of these would be no where over 200, but discounted the price is more believable. Bit of a conspiracy but considering the beef these manufacturers have with the retailer in general for whatever reason, as well as the reasonable prices from the likes of Accurascale, it isn’t at all completely unbelievable that the manufacturer’s prices are completely artificial.
Well, the first 20 class 47's had ETH fitted, so, technically, the first Class 47's were Class 47/4's....... The first twenty are also interesting in that they had generators to develop the electrics, not the more usual alternators.
No nem couplings included though...whatever they are! Great video as always. I wondered how much the deluxe version costed...but WOW! Those prices are ridiculous.
You’d think the price for the standard version would be the price for a deluxe version, wouldn’t you? Maybe not sound fitted, but have this as the deluxe price, and have the regular model be in the 150 range, it would make more sense. After all, 150-170 quid is not an insignificant amount of money!

Great review. The only thing missing was a comparison to their previous version. I thought I had missed lady Diana Spencer, but found a shop selling the deluxe version for around £250. That was a result as £300+ is far too much for a model.

I find it a lot harder to judge torque in these videos when it’s a diesel compared to a steam engine, because I can’t actually see the wheels very well. When it’s a steam engine, you can see if the driving rods are turning or not, when it’s a diesel I have to take your word for it
I'm a bit confused why the analog versions of locomotives are designed like this, especially when they have a high price. If the features such as the lighting and speakers are already installed, couldn't they have added a couple switches so you can at least turn on the cab/engine lights and running sounds?
As good as this model is, I have to agree on the price point. Its not a £240 model, I think an initial rrp of around £200 was more their place. In the same breath, it is much more a £240 model than Hornbys aged class 31 and 56 are £220 models! Now THOSE things are overpriced! I think the comparison with Accurascale is a bit skewed too. I've not had great experience with them, what with bits falling off before its even out of the box, let alone after handling. They're just not designed and assembled very well, instead being far too focused on detail to be robust enough for everyday use. That is where the Bachmann models pick up. Yes they're more expensive but they're also much more forgiving to general handling and better thought out for maintenance, points you can see with the extra detail being an option for the buyer to fit and how easy they are to disassemble. From experience of fitting those bogie bits, they prevent running on tighter curved layouts; so I can see exactly why they were left as an optional fit. I believe you may need to revise your weight calculation too. I've had one of these running with 53 in tow with buckets of power to spare, you could put a finger in front of it and feel it still had more to give. Not that a real 47 would ever be asked to pull that much! 20 container flats perhaps, tops. The IC liveried one does look stunning with a matching rake. Regarding pricing, perhaps you'd be in a position to offer your opinion of Hattons second hand prices of late, they're becoming higher than brand new in a lot of cases!
£240 New sound fitted and weathered makes the analog version £100! Ps have you checked out sound fitted Accuruscale locos up and coming prices not cheap.

Considering this locomotive is more expensive than exclusives like the 812 or the Precedent, the performance issues are completely unforgivable. Then, half of the features are locked behind DCC or the deluxe version for over 350£. Eventhough the Hornby Class 60 has a worse mechanism, I like it a lot more. That model has opening doors if I remember and has almost as good detail for less than this model. Overall however, Accurascale's offerings are yet again the superior option in my opinion. They cost less than 200£ and are much better value (and in my opinion better looking). I can't wait until you look at their Manor Class 👍👍👍👍
Sam i was pondering for 5 years. Qnd i still dont get it. Why most if not all of your hopper carts are empty? My lego equvalent desel electric pasanger loco can pull 15+ wagons and theye are all loded whit some fraith.
Why? I just reviewed an Accurascale class 37 (which was much cheaper by the way) that performs perfectly on the curves, as do many other models. They're 2nd radius curves, and most models are designed to work on them, Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Agreed. 2nd radius curves are a staple in OO scale due to space constraints everybody not living in a 500m² loft has. Even with people who manage to have broad radius curves in their visible parts or their layouts, they usually use tighter ones for fiddle yards or hidden tracks. So, a good running on 2nd radius curves is, in my opinion, mandatory to justify a buy.
This Bachmann Class 47 Diesel locomotive is a very nice looking model. Unfortunately, the price of 200 plus ponds is just too expensive which I have to agree with you Sam. Overall, the Class 47 is a pretty good looking model.
Its like DTG, its ok and looks good, in sime things even gorgeous, but, ya paying trough ya nose

Look it's swings and roundabouts, I've picked up this morning new same model, Weathered and sound fitted, If I deduct the cost of the chip and weathering the locos cost £100! Cheaper than Sam's £140 it depends what you want.

Totally agree with your review. Nothing wrong with the older version and the prices are just ridiculous. Plenty of new Bachmann releases seem to be getting discounted very quickly, so it seems that people are voting with their wallets while Accurascale clear-up :)
The bachmann Windhoff MPV is the biggest shocker, £80 first time around now it's not far off £280 plus for dcc ready, the sound fitted RRP is over £400!!!!! Bachmann are bloody piss taking robbers!

I’m a massive 47 fan and have a couple of these new tooled dcc fitted locos. They really have captured the character of the prototype in the look, feel, and somehow performance of the models. It always feels like I have a couple of full size engines that have been shrunk down to 4mm scale running around the layout. The sounds are superb too (if slightly too loud sometimes). I didn’t go for the delux models because I don’t particularly miss the rotating roof fans and the cab glazing, whilst very clever, isn’t to my taste and looks a bit over scale somehow. I was surprised the review sample derailed; neither of mine ever have.
It’s is a great loco. I agree about Bachmann prices being totally ridiculous. I was lucky and got my Intercity version for £160 with a DCC decoder fitted from a guy on eBay who had bought it (new tooling) but wanted to change his layout era and was selling up to fund his new layout. I love mine

My grandfather was an engineer at Brush in Loghbrough and built the 47s. He also had to travel to Crew to train their engineers on how to build their batches. My mum once told me that as a young girl he would take her to work and she used to play amongst the locos while they were on the production line.

Great video! It is so sad that Bachmann’s prices are so outrageous these days, this model is awesome, but it is no better than what Accurascale are making for so much cheaper. I actually thought about one of the DCC Sound BR Blue ones, but I’ll really have to think about it since the price is so high, as I might just get an Accurascale 37. I like Bachmann’s models, and think their a great company that have really improved recently, and their now much better than Hornby. On the note of the lighting, I think it’s fair that there is no engine room lighting and cab lighting on analog as you wouldn’t normally want those on. Edit: have the derailing issues stopped?

Hi, great video review, I got mine from Hatton’s for £148 a few weeks ago, I’m very happy with mine, I purchased the roof fan unit from Bachmann spares along with some other parts I needed for other loco’s, it was ok to fit the unit which has self tapping screws, there is a position on the main pcb for the power wires, once you fit a decoder the lighting is awesome and the fans are very quiet once activated, you can also increase the motor performance as well, don’t forget to remove the motor suppressor’s if dcc is going to be permanent.
Bachmann & Robin customers if given a chance! Their prices are shocking beyond belief if you don’t see them in sales or reduction sections at retailers, thanks for sharing.

@@SamsTrains Hi, it was £30, sounds a lot but once you see and feel the quality you won’t be disappointed, comes with the self tapping screws, it fits straight onto the raised metal lugs on the chassis which are above the pcb board, it is a plug and play twin fan unit, remove the non working original twin fans from the shell.
Not very much of a diesel fan but this is absolutely amazing just wished it wasn't overpriced

I spent a wet afternoon looking at some of your videos, including the one where you and Cloe face your critics. I am a fan of Sam's Trains although not all videos are relevant to me including this one. The one most relevant to me so far is the one where you show us your first experience with an airbrush. This has given me the confidence to ask my wife to buy me one for Christmas and allowed me to settle on using acrylic paint. Here's to the next ten years, though at the age of 80 now, I may not make it with you. Many thanks for all your efforts.
I think the loco is impressive, but that can't excuse the price?! £239.95?! I remember when I got my first train set about 6 years ago, it had mallard with 3 coaches and a controller, a large oval of track and a trakmat for £130 - the world's gone mad!

Hi Sam. The classification class 47/0 does not refer to the 'originals' but rather those that only had a steam boiler for train heating after TOPS numbering was introduced. In fact, the first 20 prototypes all had electric train heating (and steam heat boilers too) so we're numbered 47401-420 as part of class 47/4 the classification for those with electric train heating. Most of the rest which received this kind of heating did so after they were built, hence the somewhat haphazard numbering of the class. There was also class 47/3 which had no heating at all which were built solely for freight use, except in summer. By the 1980s with electric heating becoming the standard class 47/0 was mostly confined to freight work as well. There was also class 47/7 for push-pull fitted locos and a sub-set of class 47/4 renumbered to 478xxx for locos fitted with long-range fuel tanks.

Lovely loco tbh. Stiff priced initially of course but a few remarks from our side if we may. You seem to heavily value features and details over build quality which very much has shown earlier with Accurascale models in our opinion. AS, with all respect and from our continental perspective, are rather cheaply and nastily put together by design, and aren't exactly free from manufacturing errors. B however always seem to come out without design and production faults in your reviews, and they are solidly put together. Yet, you don't seem to value all this as such. QA does cost money Sam.
However, that all said. We think we could live with the equivalent of £ 170 for this loco, and adding a Next decoder would bring her towards ~£ 215. That would be quite reasonable for a hassle free loco like this we thought actually. The S-curve like in your layout is of course a big no-no for serious modellers, but we do understand you wanting to expose weaknesses. Cheerio.
Something I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on, Sam would be modern RTR prices. I myself have gotten back into HO scale a little in the last year and I have wanted to get some recently produced models, but the prices some manufactures are asking is just crazy in my opinion. One thing I have done however is gotten into buying second hand models that I couldn't get over a decade ago when I was younger, and they seem far more affordable for me. I don't know, I feel a video from you talking about the modern RTR prices could make for a great discussion.
haha I guess I've made my thoughts on them quite clear in this and a few other videos - generally I don't mind the high prices, but the models must justify the prices in their quality and features. Here, that wasn't the case. Second hand is definitely a good way to go!

If I can make an American loco recommendation, the brand new New York Central Hudson from Bachmann. They are die cast and are amazing price for what you get. They are sounded from the get go.
I will say it did take some reorganizing of the functions and adding some like adding realistic momentum and moving brakes and brake release to the top 10 functions. Still an amazing engine, well worth it. If you’d prefer the flashier version Bachmann just announced the streamlined Dreyfus look which will be die cast, sounded, and offer each of the driver looks (boxpok or Scullin.)

Hi Sam, I’m always comforted when my gut feelings about a loco are later backed up by your review. I’ve steered clear of these 47s on price grounds. Worryingly, though, an upcoming new Heljan Class 47 is on my wish list. I suspect it won’t be as good as the Bachmann but the RRP is £249.95 for DCC ready (£212.95 with retailer’s discount).
Yeah absolutely right - it'll have to be the best Heljan loco ever by a country mile to justify that price... I won't be buying one until they come down in price very significantly. Assuming they're still going ahead with the project and they've produced more than a handful, that will almost certainly happen!

These Bachmann 47s are superb at slow speed on Dcc, To see a couple of them buffering up loco to loco very slowly is fab.
its been a long long time since I bought a new Bachmann loco for near rrp. Last one I bought was from the same place as this, an ROD 2-8-0 loco for just £116.
My first setup, getting back into the hobby as an adult, was an old Hornby Class 47 from 1979. At the time I couldn't justify buying new and fancy stock, so I got a few things second hand. Of course I stayed with it and have a couple of different things now, but I do still have that old class 47. IT has the first version of the Ringfield motor, so it will always remain on DC, but every so often I still pull it out with the MkII coaches I got with it and run around on DC, even though I mainly model DCC now.
Regardless of price Bachmann are the kings when it comes to Diesels. Pour as much as you like over Accurascale but who's to say further down the road they won't become another ViTrains. At least with Bachmann the consumer is assured of longevity. As previously said 'You get what you pay for'.
Good points on this review, I can't believe anyone would pay the extra for the SFX models, also why no driver, the older Bachmann 47's of which I have several had a driver fitted.
Hi Sam really thorough review. I treated myself to the I K Brunel version from Kernow. It had to go back after two months due to a faulty decoder which I have to admit was sorted very quickly although slightly reluctantly they sent out a replacement model.
I think at the full rrp price one would expect better however I am very pleased with it was a substantial investment that took some consideration. It has no trouble hauling 8 or 9 mk2 coaches on the layout on the larger radius curves but I will check on some smaller radius curves
I think a lot of modellers will be looking to accurascale for future releases when it comes to price and quality.
Have you checked Accuruscales prices for up coming locos?

Sam, like plastic model kits, make your choice and either buy it or don't. I wanted a Royal Class Eduard Focke Wulf 190 kit. I wasn't going to pay £150 plus. Found one on EBay a month or so ago for £70. If you think it's too expensive then don't buy it
It is an absolutely great model by bachmann just like their new 37 is even though the 47 did come before the 37, to be honest I don’t really care whether its overpriced because in my opinion it isn’t because what you are getting is an overall fantastic model of the class 47, I am definitely thinking about getting one of these 47s as currently I only have a Lima one and old heljan one.

It would be kinda funny if all the manufacturers decided to band together and lower the quality of models to a degree where locomotives with this detail are considered high spec and bring the price up, I wonder if a revolution would begin lol
Who remembers a few years back Bachmann loco prices got to £100 ?, lots of people said would not or could not afford them prices, wonder how many did stop buying, 0:21 at todays prices £100 would be a bargain.
Ya, a lot of those had three pole motors, square slots for bearings, no flywheel or tender pickups, a complete lack of torch, and some quality issues with detail. Their diesels have always been great, but until around 10 years ago, Bachmann’s steam locos kinda sucked, and even if some of those were £100, I don’t know if they would be bargains. Bachmann have really come along way, but their prices have gone up, which is too bad.
Some of the CLASS 47s I have seen were often used for Steam Charters, whenever I go up to Cardiff to watch steam trains pull in. D1935 is one of them when travelling alongside No. 46100 The Royal Scot, and D1944 was travelling alongside No. 70000 ‘Britannia’.
This is the review I've been WAITING FOR. Lovely locomotive i have acquired this locomotive for my collection. Great MINDS think ALIKE. A bit expensive but Worth it. This is the best version of the Class 47 by a country mile. I thought long and hard about the Heljan Brush but decided AGAINST it because of Heljans very poor offerings and that's also very expensive. Are you going to review the Heljan 47 for comparison? I am a BRUSH TYPE 4 FANATIC i am very pleased that Bachmann have retooled the Brush. Thank you Sam marvellous video , well worth the wait.

I'd love to hear Bachmann try to explain why the DCC-ready Class 47 is £239 at the RRP. As for the idea of waiting until a new model comes down in price before buying one, I'm trying to do that with Hornby's newly-tooled LNER P2.
Last week, I managed to get a slightly older Bachmann 47 for a reasonable £104.17, and incredibly, I only had to wait one week for her to arrive in the post (it usually takes longer for these things to reach New Zealand). Mine is 47209 'Herbet Austin', and she's in a similar livery to the one in this review, albeit with a different sector's logo.
Hi Sam, a handsome diesel! What is it with certain manufacturers and their pricing? They remain bullish in spite of so many calling them out on excessive rrp. I suspect they aren't losing anything at the (right) price you paid, and so such a shame as our hobby is getting so expensive and pricing new and indeed existing modellers out of the market... Clear torque issues . It's about holding your nerve if you want to wait to pick one up at the right price. I have several models on pre order because they fit my needs for the layout, so I have to pay my money and take my choice. Cheers for a great review as always.

The duplicate locomotive is the Class 37. One in BR blue and yellow, the other in Reigonal Railways blue and white
With so many models putting extra features only available in DCC Sound models, I kinda want to see you look at one in the near future.
At least 4 class 47s are still in service with mainline freight operators amd have not been rebuilt as 57s. A fr cry from the origional amount. But still going strong
Once again, I applaud you for holding a major manufacturer to account for its rip-off pricing policies.
Your approach of "wait and see" before buying is the only leverage us enthusiasts have in order to put pressure on the manufacturers to adopt more sensible pricing policies.

I`ve heard a few modellers at shows say that Bachmann have `dumbed` the motors down by not using as much copper in the winding process. A friend of mine has both the old and new versions of the class 47 and the difference with haulage is like night and day.

Great video. I find now we can only buy DCC Ready or DCC Sound fitted. I find it hard to fit decoders and cannot afford DCC Sound fitted. Hattons etc don’t seem to just fit a decoder anymore. Keep up the great Videos.

I have not purchased a loco in almost 2 years simply because the prices are so high.
I would like you to change your rating system for haulage. If a model can pull prototypical loads then it is perfectly adequate. The fact that this loco can haul 44 coaches shows that it absolutely fine and to mark it down again one that can pull a few more is nonsensical.

Hi Sam I've just found out you can get a T gauge train set, locos and rolling stock. Is much smaller than Z gauge or 1/3rd of N gauge. One demonstration shows it running around a mugwith the oval being about 300mm long. There is a retailer called Tgauge based in Scotland. Their cheapest set is £130. Please can you do a review, thank you👍
I’ve got several of the older 47 models and am in analogue, they are great runners, don’t slow on curves and the lights come on before the loco moves. Got one of the new 47s and it slows on curves and the lights don’t come on until the model is moving. I wonder if the new Bachmann models is now optimised for DCC. Lovely loco but way overpriced at RRP. A lot of the new Bachmann locos are now being discounted to a more sensible price.
Although the Bachmann 47 is premium priced; why hasn’t anybody looked a bit further and praised the Diecast bogie frames? The body and bogies are screwed together. Which means the Bachmann 47 will likely be solid and serviceable for a long time. The Accurascale models are cheaply clipped together from plastic parts. So I love the solid construction of the Bachmann. The premium pricing structure - blue tinted cab windows and working radiator fans on deluxe models only - is really annoying as it made them cost in excess of £300 RRP. I bought mine from Rails of Sheffield for a little less. It is one of my very best diesels but I cannot justify buying many at this price point. Why did Bachmann have to charge so much?

Sam I really think you need to quote Bachman’s retailer price. Bachmann are very good with their widespread retailer network and give a 15% discount and have really good form for supporting local retailers unlike others even if they did have a falling out with Hattons over the 66. You can’t even buy at RRP from Bachmann online. unlike Hornby. The only places I’ve ever seen RRP are charities eg steam railways and even then it’s often not RRP.
I think comparing the actual price is far more representative and meaningful.
With the class 47 I’ve only got Lady Diana Spencer but went for the SFX model when it was reduced to £240. At that price I feel it’s a 2023 bargain to be honest. Probably is worth a fair bit more. I’d be happy up to the £270 point with that spec so say £170 DCC ready. Otherwise really happy with it.
I do quote the retailer price - I make a point of quoting the RRP, typical retailer price, and in this case the reduced price I paid. Your claim is inaccurate - some retailers, my local for instance, do charge RRP. Even at a 15% discount from RRP, this is still farcically expensive compared with the likes of accurascale, so the point stands.
@@SamsTrains sorry I misspoke as you do quote the reduced the 15% discount and the price you paid so apologies on that. I think the point I was trying get at is the vast majority will not pay RRP whereas for say the Accurascale 37 it’ll be RRP as they don’t appear to have quite the same set up as Bachmann currently. Therefore to use the RRP to bash them seems to be slightly OTT vs bashing them (rightly) with the price most pay (though I’m surprised to hear that your local retailer doesn’t get the 15% discount) as Bachman’s network is the most extensive I’m aware of, going well beyond the big box shifters.
Obviously, you are quite right in saying that the point still stands around the Bachmann 47/37 being worse value than the Accurascale 37 and Bachman’s pricing feels off. Doubly so as the SFX should be included with all versions.
I think part of the issue Bachmann appear to have is that they are hamstrung by having to use their own factory’s rather than being more competitive. This does have silver lining that the finish is always top notch but comes at a literal expense. That being said they still have pricing issues with EFE so maybe they just have large overheads / more greedy than Accurascale.
That’s no problem, I understand. I’m not saying my local doesn’t get Bachman’s discount, only that they sell to the customer at RRP, presumably making additional profit. As far as I know Bachman’s trade price for a product doesn’t vary between retailers… I think there would be uproar if they gave some a better price than others!

Yet again I fully agree with you Sam. Ridiculous price that I just would not go near. I do think the bogies should have a splash of colour. You rarely see them in all black.
A 14.2 mm back-to-back is not operational for me. That spacing WILL ride up over the guard rails ln a Peco bullhead turnout as one the flange on one wheel forces the other up. This is an ongoing problem with manor manufacturers, including the largest, to the point where I will first check the gauge on any new loco or wagon. I suggest that the actual wheel flange spacing be checked against a standard gauge, similar to the one that the NMRA provides.

Too bad they didn't make a DCC version for the price. (And sell an analog version for less.) It would be really cool to see it sitting at the station with the engine warming up and the lights on. Then the conductor shouts "All Aboard" and the bell goes Clang Clang. Then Whooo.. Whooo.. and off it goes, accelerating smoothly to top speed, ringing its bell from time to time and sounding its horn when approaching other trains at the points... But I guess we can always dream :-)

Ahd here I thought Hornby were being ludicrous with their prices! At least they give you every single detail on all models, whether they're DCC Fitted or not 😂
The pricing of things like this are why some people believe that a lot of these manufacturers may be putting prices sky high in order for the inevitable discount prices to seem like a bargain.. when in fact it’s a normal price you’re paying! Yesteryear one of these would be no where over 200, but discounted the price is more believable.
Bit of a conspiracy but considering the beef these manufacturers have with the retailer in general for whatever reason, as well as the reasonable prices from the likes of Accurascale, it isn’t at all completely unbelievable that the manufacturer’s prices are completely artificial.
Someone at bachmann listen HARD to this !
Well, the first 20 class 47's had ETH fitted, so, technically, the first Class 47's were Class 47/4's....... The first twenty are also interesting in that they had generators to develop the electrics, not the more usual alternators.
I know what Accurail models is going to make next.
No nem couplings included though...whatever they are!

You’d think the price for the standard version would be the price for a deluxe version, wouldn’t you? Maybe not sound fitted, but have this as the deluxe price, and have the regular model be in the 150 range, it would make more sense. After all, 150-170 quid is not an insignificant amount of money!

Great review. The only thing missing was a comparison to their previous version. I thought I had missed lady Diana Spencer, but found a shop selling the deluxe version for around £250. That was a result as £300+ is far too much for a model.
Bought 3 hornby lady Di versions for less than that

Hi Sam, I know you probably will not buy a new 2024 Heljan class 47 for maybe the next 10 years until it's down to an acceptable price level but from the information that's available today with the new Heljan class 47 now available I'm interested to know what your thoughts are regarding this model as it's going to be sometime before you do a review on it if you do one at all?, many thanks.

I find it a lot harder to judge torque in these videos when it’s a diesel compared to a steam engine, because I can’t actually see the wheels very well.
When it’s a steam engine, you can see if the driving rods are turning or not, when it’s a diesel I have to take your word for it
I'm a bit confused why the analog versions of locomotives are designed like this, especially when they have a high price. If the features such as the lighting and speakers are already installed, couldn't they have added a couple switches so you can at least turn on the cab/engine lights and running sounds?
Are Bachmann German? 'Cause Fleischman N gauge used to be very expensive too, though very well made. What an engine.
As good as this model is, I have to agree on the price point. Its not a £240 model, I think an initial rrp of around £200 was more their place. In the same breath, it is much more a £240 model than Hornbys aged class 31 and 56 are £220 models! Now THOSE things are overpriced! I think the comparison with Accurascale is a bit skewed too. I've not had great experience with them, what with bits falling off before its even out of the box, let alone after handling. They're just not designed and assembled very well, instead being far too focused on detail to be robust enough for everyday use. That is where the Bachmann models pick up. Yes they're more expensive but they're also much more forgiving to general handling and better thought out for maintenance, points you can see with the extra detail being an option for the buyer to fit and how easy they are to disassemble. From experience of fitting those bogie bits, they prevent running on tighter curved layouts; so I can see exactly why they were left as an optional fit. I believe you may need to revise your weight calculation too. I've had one of these running with 53 in tow with buckets of power to spare, you could put a finger in front of it and feel it still had more to give. Not that a real 47 would ever be asked to pull that much! 20 container flats perhaps, tops. The IC liveried one does look stunning with a matching rake. Regarding pricing, perhaps you'd be in a position to offer your opinion of Hattons second hand prices of late, they're becoming higher than brand new in a lot of cases!
Looks like the Class 37 is the duplicated loco on the layout.
£240 New sound fitted and weathered makes the analog version £100! Ps have you checked out sound fitted Accuruscale locos up and coming prices not cheap.
Do you think you would be able to add a motor for the fans yourself? Be interesting to see how much it costs you to do so too.
It would be interesting - though I know it'd cost very little... even buying a motor at consumer prices is a matter of £1-£2 pounds... I can print gears and mountings for next to nothing!

Hi Sam I've been waiting for a good review on the Bachmann class 47, have you reviewed the Heljan class 47?? I'm deciding on which to get. I agree with you about price and features.
Considering this locomotive is more expensive than exclusives like the 812 or the Precedent, the performance issues are completely unforgivable. Then, half of the features are locked behind DCC or the deluxe version for over 350£. Eventhough the Hornby Class 60 has a worse mechanism, I like it a lot more. That model has opening doors if I remember and has almost as good detail for less than this model. Overall however, Accurascale's offerings are yet again the superior option in my opinion. They cost less than 200£ and are much better value (and in my opinion better looking). I can't wait until you look at their Manor Class 👍👍👍👍
Sam i was pondering for 5 years. Qnd i still dont get it. Why most if not all of your hopper carts are empty? My lego equvalent desel electric pasanger loco can pull 15+ wagons and theye are all loded whit some fraith.

Your curves are just a bit tight and that ought to be rectified in your next layout. The performance of your locomotives will improve markedly.
Why? I just reviewed an Accurascale class 37 (which was much cheaper by the way) that performs perfectly on the curves, as do many other models. They're 2nd radius curves, and most models are designed to work on them,

@@SamsTrains Agreed. 2nd radius curves are a staple in OO scale due to space constraints everybody not living in a 500m² loft has. Even with people who manage to have broad radius curves in their visible parts or their layouts, they usually use tighter ones for fiddle yards or hidden tracks. So, a good running on 2nd radius curves is, in my opinion, mandatory to justify a buy.
