- Since I'm grinding my way down the French Tank Destroyers to get to the awesome AMX 50 Foch 155, sooner or later I'm going to have to play the Somua S-40. I've heard nothing good about this thing. This could get emotional. Please, Somua S-40, be gentle with me!
It has one incredible feature. The ugliness. It's ugly as hell, it looks like malformed maggot eating radiactive waste.
I had my ARL TD sitting in my garage, idle. Then I saw your Foch video's and I am now grinding for my dear life. Thank you for these insightful videos!!! You genuinely give a good idea of what tanks fit my play style as you describe them unbiasly.

Hey jingles, can you do a review of the Renault UE 57? (Lawnmower with a cannon)
Strange that they put this as a tank destroyer when in history the SOMUA S35 and S40 were actually medium tanks and the best on the battlefield in 1940. Their armor and armament in the Battle of France were better than the Panzer III then in use with the Wehrmacht. The only thing the German tank had going for it was a radio.
Don't you know it's critical the Germans have all the best French tanks?
It's a little program called Bandicam. Free version allows up to 10mins of recording with a watermark (as seen in my first few videos). Can't post links in comments but just google "Bandicam" and you'll find it.
Aaaargh! I was looking forward to the V39, on paper the DCA45 90mm gun looks really good, but I can't find anyone to say a good thing about it. Even the Somua has *some* fans!
I dont really know why people hate so much about this TD, I bought it, understood its weaknesess and I had an absolute BLAST on it with an amazing 73,7% win ratio after 38 battles (which allowed me to move to ARL V39 which is the seventh hell of WoT for me)
The derp gun isn't as bad as it may look. Because of the way HE shells work, they do damage even if they don't penetrate, and they almost always cause damage to modules and/or crew. And if you're top tier, few enemies have any armor to speak of, and you can kill many of them with one shot. I've had several battles in the SAu 40 where I got 5-6 one-shot kills in one battle.
I must confess, I am constantly forgetting that this TD even exists. Does not speak for it, considering that I am frequently playing Tier 3, 4 and 5...

Jingles, can you do a video on the SARL 42? Its a tier 4 french medium released in the 9.7 patch.

I love the UE 57 though, I've had very good games in it.
The UE 57 would be good with some gun depression (greater than 2 degrees), gun traverse range and hull traverse speed.
For god sakes you don't play ue-57 like a tank destroyer, you play it like an elc amx

Very true, Jingles! Just seeing those kills reminded me of the good old days in my Marder. I loved that machine. You were so correct when you called it a stress reliever! No matter how bad the day was, I could come home and have some fun with that machine! When the they changed the Marder and Panzer IV, they took away a lot of just pure fun from the game. Keep the great vids coming! Just read, Hitler's Panzers by Dennis Showalter,, great book. Quick read, too.

I did like the Pershing, but I was short on cash when I unlocked the Patton and needed to transfer the crew over anyway, so I sold it. I kinda regret it. You certainly won't be disappointed, I found it far better than the T-20, which was fun too.

That's fine. Some tanks just don't suit some people, and the Sau-40's a damn hard tank to like at the best of times.
I'd have to buy one first, but it's something I do plan to get done. Probably not in the next week or so, though.
I don't why people regard it as being so bad I've done extremely well with this tank I've gotten top gun 19 times with it, to me it's not bad at all.
I admit the TD before this is better I almost got top gun in my first game I was 1 kill short but I died because I accidentally killed myself.
I had a match where I did literally nothing. 10 shots, no penetrating hits, no spots, nothing. And I still managed to get mastery 3rd class.
I did pretty well with the S-40 myself using the 105mm derp gun. Was so close to getting Halonen's medal a few times, but alas, no such luck. As you die very easily, you just have to stay back with this thing and spam enemies with HE while they are busy aiming at someone else. Of course you can also one-shot tier 5 TDs and meds with it if you hit the sides or rear.
Unfortunately, all those people you mention who don't seem to be using it? I'm one of them. Getting an ST-I would mean grinding through the godawful KV-4, and I already have the IS-4 so I didn't feel any urge to grind another Tier 9 Heavy. I'd *like* to have one, like you say, hardly anyone does, but... KV-4... noooooo!
So short version - sorry, can't see it happening anytime soon. :(
Time for a jingles review throw back as I finally grind the French TD's. I had a ton of fun with this thing stock. KV1S? Good thing he can't see me as I perma track him with that shitty derp 75mm and wittle away at him doing 20-30 damage here and there. Such a fun tank if you troll hard with it. Fully upgraded...well it's like the Hetzers inbred cousin. Not bad but not great...

I dunno, my experience with the S40 was it was basically a downgraded version of what other TD's you could get at tier 4. I just couldn't see very much positive in the TD. Average gun stats, slow speed, tiny gun range, tumor on its head which negates its great gun depression for the most part, poor armor. Glad I made it to the S35, that thing is fun.
The gun is well below average.
All other tier 4 destroyers match or exceed the damage and leave the penetration in the dust.
They're also all smaller, faster and most of them are better protected,
Even a broken clock can tell the right time twice a day !

I had a lot of fun with that TD, one shooting tier 4 and below with the 105 mm gun (and even some tier 5).
240 games and 55% win. But that's true, you need to be very careful because of the incredible weak armour.
Hehehe, at least it'll be over soon. I hear the Tier 6 is pretty good, it has an awesome 90mm gun.
... There is one HUGE bonus that the Somoa has that you left out of it's specs. It leads to the S-35 CA. Grit your teeth and hold your head high, as the S-35 CA is a freakin gem. The Best way to describe it is that it's a marder II at tier 5.
I found the French TDs to be much better than advertised. The V is as good as it is ungainly.
The shell velocity on the 105mm is better than any tier 4 or derp gun.
Yes, I use gold to train crews on a a lot of tanks.
I've heard people refer to that little turret on top of the Somua and Arl39 as the 'Blister' since everyone wants to pop it by shooting at it.

I had ONE great game with the AMX 40, where my armor took 147 hits to destroy, the enemies took so long to kill me, by the time they did, the rest of my team had nearly captured the enemy base.
I've been playing my S-40 and gotta say i'm very pleased with it on how it can handle most tanks it comes up against and I'm considering buying a gun rammer for it and take it off once i'm done with the s-40 if i decide to sell it. I've done well to the point where I don't think I'll buy the 105 since the 75mm long 44 is good enough to get the shots down range and lay some hurt down. It is no hetzer but its certainly good enough.
Bleh.. I'll just have to lie back and think of the Foch 155 :p

Also, i share your sentiment, I haven't felt that he S40 is a bad TD. I think its just a classic case of most people not being able to adapt. Much in the same way any of the new released maps are "complete garbage" the first week they are released because no one bothers to learn the strategies and techniques needed to be successful.
This thing is bad, armor is okay sometimes I get a bounce on it.
But the Gun is pain in the arse.
I fired at a Panzer II from 100m 6 times, fully aimed, and all shots missed expected for one. Hope it will get better.
They almost never bother to fix abysmal low-tier machines.
Or modify anything but the top modules, leaving grinds like the ISU which I simply quit after less than a week.
I'm liking this tank so far. best view range and alfa damage I have seen of any tank destroyer. Only thing I see is it slowness, but that's not a problem for a td since all you do is snipe and arm-bush.
The Autoloader Turrets look like smiling faces and the guns look like long Pinocchio noses.
Have you revised your opinion of the SAu 40? I notice in more recent videos you refer to it rather disparagingly.
Hey BohemianEagle could you try to do a video on the ST-I? Ive been tempted to use it since no one seems to be using it. I have my IS-7 and im planning to get it just for a new tank to use. Im not saying that you HAVE to do a video on it, just saying if you have the time to do it. :)

there is one very good thing about this tank: get an explosive cannon and buy premium shells. it has huge damage and pen and will send apart every tank in game.
I love mine and always keep it in my garage, basically its a French hetzer.
hey Jingles would it be possible for there to be a video of the Tier 3 tank destroyer, since it's so small yet has a gun that's completely OP for a tank/car of it's size. (from what I've seen the thing is smaller than a Prius)

I killed a hellcat with this tank. he shot me twice and i died, but i managed to shoot him 5 times, that moment when both tanks shoot at the same time.
This td broke me... haven't had a single good game since I had it in the garage (almost 3 weeks now)
agreed, not that bad a machine if any good. Just have to know what to do and not be over extending your abilities for it. *it is a sniper, not a fighter.
As for guns, that 105 like most is such a beast xD
The D1 says it has a speed limit of 28kph but all I could get out of it was 14 kph and that was going downhill

If u get the 105mm gun it can pen anything, once I brought a kg-1s from 100% to 20% with 3 shots, the 105 can one shot tanks or really damage any tanks
There are many who insist that there is no such thing as a bad tank - all I can say is - They're Wrong!
I also seemed to do better with the derp. The HE seemed to pen many of the lower tier tanks for a one shot kill and didi decent damage even if it didn't pen. Overall I didn't like the Samua or the previous two French TDs. I'm liking the Hot Tub a bit more. It is faster at least, and the gun is OK. I'm not one-shotted in it as much either. I hate that when it happens to my tank.
Im with you I only play with 100% crew no matter the tank.
The only problem i have with this one is the size and speed, but the gun will fuck shit up

I love the Souma S-40, although my win rate was admittedly bad...? But every time I get a kill I type "oink oink oink." It's a troll tank, it always does damage and usually quit a bit. Most tanks come at you confidently, you fire and they retreat quickly. Easy to kill a KV with one, can easily pick up 5 kills if your team actually scouts. Armor is good enough to ignore light tanks in its own tier. BTW, the 75mms are crap, only the derp will give you any joy.
Oh *I* didn't have much of a grind, but you will if you don't do what I did and free xp your way out of that thing fast as you can. ;)

zorhis1996 you should use the 105 it has got HE ammo as default and I had more success when I changed to it

I hope tier 8 is better than the Sau-40 and the V39

Oh by the way, on the S-35, research both guns, it will make the ARL grind a bit less painful.
If you Google "Carlton Kirby Dakar" and search Vidioes (as opposed to CZcams) you can find some of his race commentary, which comes off much differently then the stuff currently showing up in CZcamss searches.

I use it as such, but it has a HIGH profile, and does not have the TD bonus on camo... so it's not a very good TD.
I prefered the DERP on this TD. It was better than the stats indicated.
My best tank is the M3 Lee, and I got my first top gun in the M3 lee, Oh god, why did you make me so different.
i played 2 games in the somua s40. sold it immediately. didnt upgrade a single module. same as the fate of just about all of my tank destroyers. ive never had an exceptionally good game in a tank destroyer and i do not know how to drive them. and they frustrate me too much to learn how.
When it comes to bad vehicles.... I tie the Somua S-40 with the Lee. I hated it that much.
Quick side note, the S 35 CA is worth it... barely. I don't care how shit the rest of the tech tree is, knowing that when it gets it right it gets it blissfully right I can survive the rest of it.
I actually really like this tank.
Again Jagdpanzer IV bashing. I have it and I know it is not excellent(not by far), but it isn't THAT bad, not the monstrosity people make it out to be.
Camonet + camotraining + BIA makes it more than properly hidden. The only real problems are higher tier tanks all gettting pens on your angled front and the fact that the StuK 42 L/70 gets no damage pens way too often. Yes it has difficulty penning, but you have to know where to aim, but does that not go for most tanks?
Ok i have to say the tier 3 French td is really good if you play right. I have 11 kills in that bad boy. Its so small. I call it the super flea. 6mm of armor WOOO!! but I love it love it. Go RUE 57!!

Actually you are wrong with the KV-4, it's an EPIC Tank. I enjoy it a lot more than the IS-8 by far. I've bounced some pretty amazing shots like an Object 704's 286 Penetration Gun off the SIDE of my Turret. And that was before they buffed it a little bit too.
