The man creates huge emotional masterpieces With 2 chords and 5 singles notes on the reg. He is criminally underrated.
How's he underrated? He has a legion of fans, a 30 year career with this band, dozens of hits, he's made his fortune a few times over, has his own signature guitars... if that's underrated, I hope to be similarly underrated 30 years from now.
@@kaamos79 I never hear him in the conversation of greatest guitarists or songwriters. Maybe I'm just not hearing that. I hear lots of praise from fans of Deftones, and seldom from music publications. With the signature series thing.. My last guitarist had a signature Charger. Usually I am the guy to get on to people about incorrectly using "underrated", but in this instance, I just don't see the acclaim and praise that I believe the emotional Impact of his songs are deserving of. Then again, that could be that I'M not seeing it.
@@SuperTimtation He's a good guitarist and he writes some great riffs, I'm sure he doesn't lose any sleep over not being raved about by some random guitar magazine or website, and I'm sure if he's crying over not making some arbitrary list of guitarists that someone things is better than other guitarists, he'll wipe away his tears with a few hundreds and get on with the next Deftones album, or heading out on stage to play in from of thousands, whenever that's a thing again.
@@kaamos79 Again, he does get his dues. Agreed. But having the hit songs, the career and the fans goes, most everone has those that are good at their craft. It's the acclaim bro!

Stephen doing these playthroughs makes me appreciate him and Deftones even more. Been a fan since 1998, and OHMS proves they are still amazing. R.I.P. brother Chi. 'Smile' is a masterpiece. May we someday be blessed with EROS🤘
Unfortunately chino and the rest of deftones announced that they feel uncomfortable and awkward playing the songs on that album and avoid thinking of it or finishing the songs
The songs that are pre-mixed other than smile have been cannabalized into several of their releases post Saturday Night Wrists. I like you wish they were all completed. There would also be a legality issue with Chi’s estate, which is why they’re probably never going to see the light of day as an album. ✌🏼
@@Thecasualgamer-pp5wc it’s more of a business issue, and they would still have to post-produce and polish everything, which opens legality shit as Chi’s estate would be part of that process.

Such a simple song to play but man its so good. Remember seeing an ATF behind the scenes video were Stephen says that his favourite riff was the notes at the end of this song.

I grew up with Deftones. This is definitely special to me.
This always felt like a Nirvana styled song to me, in a great way. Something about the rhythm section

I’ve been hearing a lot of bands influenced by Nirvana and Deftones recently, and I’ve read quite a few articles noting similarities between them. I’ve never made that connection before but now I’m starting to see it

Rhythm is nirvana?
I went from nirvana in the late 90s straight into deftones and I always heard subtle links between the two. Think it's the heaviness of the rhythm section with the grungy vocal melodies. Deftones also brought the Californian groove and hip-hop influences to the party too, not to mention the much more prevalent screams.

This is one of the songs that I like the most about deftones. is the sample of how to create an incredible riff with taste and simplicity, without the need for speed or many notes. Stephen is my favorite guitarist. Deftones forever. 🖤🖤🖤
No guitarist I have ever heard has done so much musically and emotionally with so few notes.The space seems more important than the notes.

Wow, it’s in standard tuning!? I always thought it was played in drop tuning. What a trip! Stephen tone and playing are incredible on Around the Fur, it’s a masterpiece.
It's in Eb Standard, so is Dai the flu. The rest is in Drop C#.
My favorite band of all time. started playing drums because i saw Abe killing it, and i was like "THERE GOES MY HERO" !!!! Abe i look up to you man... Deftones music is absolute LIFE .
watching him just play has this serene quality where he's just in the zone and it probably provides this air of escapism from the horrors of the world. and we get to join him. i love watching him play. he is a grandmaster of his instrument. today's guitar players need to go to school to learn what he does. it's not about playing a riff or doing a solo. it's about phrasing and finding your own your identity through an instrument. that's why dusty hill of zz top was great in the bass and that's why joey jordison and charlie watts were grandmasters on the drums. r.i.p. to those 3 men.

Saw them twice on this tour. The first time was pretty much all heavier faster stuff. The second time they played this and some of the other "more chill" songs that they had. Both shows were great. Thanks for changing it up. I think it's always been the dynamics and creativity of this bands songwriting that has set them apart from their peers.

It’s cool to see this song played so up-close… I think we are being thoroughly spoiled… like generally we get so much information about how bands play and write it’s kinda absurd. I wish it was like this 20 years ago. Teenagers now are so damn lucky… want to learn how to play the entire Deftones discography? Here you go, the man himself will show you. I remember looking for tabs online or trying to watch videos in 480p to see how their songs are actually played… times have changed… like A LOT!
