  • Is the Minecraft Bedrock Edition really that bad for Nintendo Switch? In this review, I'll be sharing my gameplay experiences and giving you my honest opinion on its good and bad points. I'll be discussing the controls (handheld, joy-con & pro controller), gameplay, marketplace and performance, as well as some cool features that you might not know about the Console Edition. While some reviewers have claimed that the Switch struggles with Minecraft, I've had a lot of fun with it in survival and have played for over 100 hours in online multiplayer on our own Realms server. Watch to see if the Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft is worth your time and money.

    Hearing people say Minecraft was terrible on the Switch always puzzled me as when I did play it I never found it to be terrible. I got back into it recently to see if it was as bad as people said it was and it’s way better than everyone makes it seem. Sure it can lag at some points but I’ve overall had a good experience with it. If the younger me who only had console edition and pocket edition had this version. He would be on it for hours everyday.

      I'm glad to hear you've had good experiences with the game on the Switch. It's indeed odd that this version is looked down on as much. My assumption is that it largely comes from people that are used to the PC version, are pro players or have never played the console versions. It's a fine experience, so I don't understand the fuss either. Funny, considering many of us used to play Minecraft with max 10 FPS a decade ago and still had a blast :D

      Multi-player on is is horrid though. I hosted a world for my boyfriend who joined me on his PC. The chunks didn't load at all and the game crashed multiple times. It is barely playable sometimes. So it really sucks.

      @smallthoughts_nl  Před rokem +15

      Yeah, as shown in the video, that's easily the weakest part about the Switch version. I'd recommend your boyfriend to host instead or to get a Realms server. There's one Realms server option for only two people that's cheaper. Then you should have a more pleasant experience.

      I have been playing Minecraft on my old 2013 Macbook Air, but that died recently so I've been looking into another way to play. It was really disheartening to hear all these people saying it is terrible on the Switch, but your comment has really helped. I'm used to a bit of lag on my Mac,cause it only has 4 gb RAM, and so I've also never been able to install many mods or have a very far render distance or anything like that. So it's nice to hear that it's really not that different from other console versions.

      Overall performance for BE on all platforms has been on the decline. One of the reasons could be because of the new *Render Dragon* rendering engine. If you ask me, it wasn't exactly necessary to make a new rendering engine from scratch, but of course Nvidia sponsored the game for that sweet RTX compatibility, which is undoubtedly one of the reasons they put so much resources into that.
      Other reasons for performance decline may include the new 1.18+ World Gen, and lack of bugfixes and optimization focus.
      Having a team for each platform is definitely a good idea. Mojang already has dedicated groups for artwork, sound design, and all that stuff, but Idk if they do for each platform. I don't think that's very realistic right now though. As big as Mojang/Microsoft is, the BE team is still relatively small compared to the game's size and popularity.

    It used to run very well before 1.16.
    Since then more and more issues started showing up.
    What used to be quick loading chunks became slow. I kept crashing because of simple things, like opening a chesy or using a firework. More weird issues kept showing up like randomly getting disconnected, or weird game crashes or huge lag spikes.

      Not surprised tbh. The switch is 5 Years old and was even at the release not as powerful as some smartphones.
      The game evolved (for the cost of needing more resources) but the switch obviously didnt.
      Playstation and Xbox are a lot stronger, so you have more room (performance) to play with.
      Obviously I dont think Minecraft runs on the xbox now better than 5 years ago, but because of the higher performance its still okay I think.
      But on the switch it was probably already at release running at almost 100%, so no wonder it gets worse with every update.

I absolutely agree that travelling by boat is by far the game at its worst performance, but beyond that, there's nothing that strikes me as particularly bad about this version. As you said, it's poorly optimised, and as Minecraft Dungeons also runs poorly at times on Switch, it's a Mojang issue over a hardware issue.

    What I dislike the most is that nothing syncs between devices.
    P.S. what determines the hardware I play games on depends on what the game was optimised/meant for first, because all other alternatives are just taped together, it helps deciding what device to play it on and makes the experience better imo. So even if everything is fixed with MC Console / Mobile, I won’t care because I don’t want to juggle devices.
    In fact this is the problem with most software in general… I mean I have an entire document dedicated to my opinion on this kind of stuff that I hope to turn into a video… but I know I won’t 😞

    @njnjco Před 10 měsíci +3

    There are a lot of little problems, but there were two major problems and one outside influence that really made me stop playing the Switch Edition. The first problem was that the game kept logging me out on my Microsoft account, and it's a massive pain to log back in, because you can't do it from within the game. When you aren't logged in, you can't play your maps from the store, which was a deal breaker for me because I play Skyblock the most and I was using a generic store bought Skyblock map. The second major reason I don't play Switch Edition anymore was the 1.17 (I think) update. It was whenever it was that the Y height was changed. All the maps from before then on the store could not be updated beyond that, so they would always be stuck at that update. They did this to avoid breaking maps that were designed with the old Y height, but it also meant that the main map I played on the Switch was essentially a time capsule.
    I am often on the road, so portable was the only way to reliably play, even though I prefer Java Edition. I played PE back when it first released, but I don't like the touch controls these days and switching from the switch to PE wouldn't fix the marketplace mapanyway. I have the Vita Edition, which is also portable, but it's stuck all the way back on the update aquatic, so I had no real alternative to the Switch Edition when on the road.
    But all that changed when my Steam Deck arrived, which meant that I had another way to play Minecraft on the go. I put Java Edition on it, manually recreated the Bedrock controls with Steam Input because I didn't know there were controller support mods for Java Edition, and have been playing that ever since. I actually went into creative and recreated my Switch Skyblock map block for block so that I could continue the map that I had spent so much time on. Haven't looked back.

      I think what it comes down to is that the people who say they "don't have issues" just haven't explored/built enough to get to that critical mass where it starts affecting them. All Switches/versions of the game are going to be the same, so it's just a matter of world size/complexity.

  • @DRS7672
    @DRS7672 Před rokem +24

    I think we played different versions... honestly, buy Minecraft on Switch was one of my worst purchases ever. I enjoyed it a lot when I first downloaded it. Playing it on a decent size screen while lying on my bed was quite a great experience, and I have hundreds of hours with the game on my Switch (really, more than 800). Actually, the game almost felt like a good port.
    The problems came when my worlds were above 100 MB of space - which is not that much, if you're a player who likes to play on the same world for several months. Then the problems became so notorious: a lot of lag even when playing offline, the chunks taking a lot to render, the FPS dropped below the 25 frames most of the time, and the autosave taking like 5 minutes to complete, lagging all of your world in the process, just to repeat it after a minute or so (you can't disable it).
    Another thing that I really don't understand is the volume of the save data. It's HUGE. The game barely reaches 1.2 GB of space, but then I realized that only the save files were 1.8 GB, more than the game itself. And I gotta say it again, my worlds were never above the 100 MB, and had no texture packs installed. So, why was it so huge? Even when deleting my save files, I entered to the game to see what was the initial size of the save data. I didn't create a world, just opened the game: the size was already 275 MB. For literally nothing.
    I'm so sorry to write all of this, maybe just a few will read it all, but I'm so tired to see that the game is on the best sellers tab every week even when it is such a bad port. I ended up buying the PC version for my laptop, and it's an infinitely better version (it ain't a powerful laptop, but runs Minecraft Bedrock almost at 60 FPS with 10 chunks of render distance).
    Your video was very good, and I really enjoyed watching it, but I think it represents only the bright side of the game on Switch. However, I would suggest you to verify all what I said here and, if you find this to be true, make another video to inform to the people about this awful port. Maybe that will help to reach Mojang so they can finally fix this version.

    the fps are not the best but also not something it bugs me, tbh i would recommend it to everyone except for hardcore players which expect high performance and huge servers. been playing on my switch since more than two years.

    The switch version on its own is fine. But if you reach near the storage limit on the game it can mess up everything. Because I had low storage on the game, now it tends to crash and freeze up a bunch making it really hard to play. I assume if I get an SD card or something to help with my storage issue it should fix this but at the moment its unplayable for me lol. But before I had any issues I had a great time with it. 👍

    • @smallthoughts_nl
      @smallthoughts_nl  Před rokem +6

      By crashing, you mean that the game stops, there's a notification about the storage limit, and you're brought back to the Minecraft main menu? If so, I've had that happen as well with the Disney World map. Perhaps an SD card does indeed help, but I found it odd considering there's still space left on the internal storage. I'm not sure how to adjust it so Minecraft can use up more space. If someone knows a fix to this, I'm curious about it, too. It's a really frustrating issue.

    Minecraft Bedrock has had controller latency problems ever since version 1.18.30. It's not just the switch that is imprecise it's the games fault. It is currently fixed in the newest beta 1.20.30 so keep an eye out for the release.
    It's annoying really. Not only did the rendering engine change make the game slower for no discernable advantages but the controld have been compromised too. Bedrock really needs an optimization update, the switch should still easily play the game without problem.

    As of late 2022 or early 2023 the Nintendo Switch has been my primary way of playing Minecraft. Personally control wise I think it really does depend on preference. I might go back to mobile but I almost always rely on my switch for gaming so it just makes it that much easier instead of switching between devices. I was starting to deal with more lag on my phone & when you I made the move to my switch it did help with that lag. I still do have some lag spikes here and there but it’s not as bad as people make it seem.

    I found this video in search of common issues I had with the switch version. And playing on split screen with my kid, definitely found us these same performance issues. It's basically unplayable in split screen if you have a kelp farm running, lagging to the point where it's basically 1 frame every 5 mins. Even with the OLED. Things get worse when in split screen 2 players get further apart or are in separate dimensions (nether/overworld). God help anyone who wants to play creative and spawn more than 20 mob eggs. I definitely think 1.17 is the issue. Tho last time I played bedrock was when it had world borders.

    As someone who used to play Java Edition with a really crappy and slow computer... Nintendo Switch Minecraft performs fine (lol).
    Third party games struggle a lot one Nintendo Switch. The system is designed for optimization. Its cheaper to manufacture and runs smoothly so long as you actually optimize the game for the system. The people who make Nintendo games are masters at making the best of limited performance, which is why games like Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, and Mario Kart look so good and can handle so much at once. Meanwhile, A Hat in Time, Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons, Subnautica, and other third party games have noticeable bugs and occasional performance struggles because they weren't designed for the system... in the case of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, those games were made by Gamefreak. Nintendo owns part of the franchise, which is why they only show up on Nintendo consoles... but despite that the team that makes them is very small (the size of an indie game company essentially) and they are _not_ very good at optimization due to their small team and rushed development time.

My 12 year old just got into it, and let me tell you SPLIT SCREEN IS ALMOST COMPLETELY UNPLAYABLE. Any time the game is autosaving (every 2-3 minutes), you have about 30 seconds where block changes are not shown. You can't see any changes to blocks you've placed or mined. This can result in at minimum frustration, and at most death.

  • @Sorro
    @Sorro Před rokem

    I have almost 200 hours on the switch version of minecraft and here is my honest opinion and why now I play on my low end laptop that barely reaches 30 fps:
    - The loading times for chunks and nether made it being really hard to continue with my survival world in which i have many things far one from another, since traveling was just waiting until the chunk loaded for more than half the time, and the nether shortcut was an immediate death
    - There are a lot of crashes. Right now, the current version seems more stable and with not so many crashes, but as someone who has the switch version of the game since 1.14, crashes have been a usual thing, and even when an update fixes most crashes, sooner or later there will be another update that breaks the game again
    I don't blame the switch for being underpowered or anything in this case, but rather the game itself. Look at the Wii U, a console with the same power or maybe even a bit less. It has a completely different version of Minecraft made by 4J Studios instead of Microsoft and it NEVER gave any of the problems the switch version of the game has. So I believe that's enough proof that, in this case, we shouldn't blame the switch's hardware, but the game itself, as the exact same game that runs on the switch with so many problems runs almost flawlessly on my low end laptop
