The screenplay is by Marcus Gardley (“Maid,” “The Chi”), based on the novel by Alice Walker and based on the musical stage play, book (of the musical stage play) by Marsha Norman, music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. The executive producers Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Carla Gardini, Mara Jacobs, Adam Fell, Courtenay Valenti, Sheila Walcott and Michael Beugg.
Joining director Bazawule behind the camera are director of photography Dan Laustsen (“John Wick: Chapter 4,” “The Shape of Water”), production designer Paul Denham Austerberry (“The Flash,” “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”) and editor Jon Poll (“Bombshell,” “The Greatest Showman”). FYI: this is NOT a remake of the original movie, it is an adaptation of the tony award winning broadway musical version. the musical is much more closer to the book than the original movie. the musical is vastly different from the original so there is nothing to worry about. this movie will be its own thing. this new version and the original are two completely different movies. both can co-exist without diminishing the other. i think this movie will be amazing and i have no doubt in my mind that it will be a huge success

The whole cast lineup is amazing, but tbh I'm mainly excited to hear Fantasia sing again. I got emotional just hearing her sing in this trailer.

I did too! I started crying. I've loved her since the moment I first saw and heard her on Idol, and I've never stopped loving her. Something about her just gets me at my core. I simply adore her.
NOTHING will come close to the original. However, Fantasia and her voice are on other levels, may be worth watching for her singing alone.

I caught the preview last weekend. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical at first because I'm a huge fan of the original. You know, the story, the acting, and all that geeky filmmaker stuff - totally my jam. But guess what? It totally blows the original out of the water.
Now, some folks my age (yeah, I'm north of 50) are stuck on the idea that nothing beats the good ol' days of cinema. Remakes? Nah, they say it can never top the OG. Well, this one proves them wrong. It's like they took movies and musicals, tossed them in a blender, and created something magical. Trust me, it not only meets expectations but does so with a genuine vibe.
In a world where remakes often fall short, this one flips the script. It's a must-watch. Seriously, run, don't walk to it. You'll laugh, you'll cry - especially at that ending. It's like a cinematic mic drop, something for the ages. I'll admit, "this" grown man shed a few tears in a theater full of ladies.
Hats off to the new-gen actors, actresses, and filmmakers behind this gem. They've got skills! The way they seamlessly blend movie and musical elements is just one example of their talent. It goes beyond the nostalgia of old-school cinema. They're not just paying homage; they're taking storytelling to a whole new level on the big screen. Magnificent! 5 stars

I remember too! I was 14 the first time I saw on CZcams.
I'm not exaggerating when I say I go back to that performance about once a month and it brings me to tears every single time. And it was just her on a bare stage- she wasn't even in costume. But she was *living* those lyrics and the music just poured out of her like it was holy. I am so excited for her I can't even put it into words. Best Actress All the Awards. Right now.

Wow…that was THE best movie I’ve seen. Period. Not usually a big fan of musicals, but the music in this was brilliant. I’m astonished that it hasn’t garnered more award nominations. And this isn’t a black thing: I’m a 64-year-old white Aussie and it was just the best thing I’ve seen in years.

I just saw the movie Taraji Did Her Thing, she continues to show her versatility.
Fantasia and Halle are the nation's best singers right now. They have the soulfulness of Whitney Houston. I'm glad seeing Halle getting so much work and lighting up the screen with her divine presence. And Fantasia has been so underrated - she is The Voice. 👑🙏🏻❤

I saw Fantasia on Broadway in "The Color Purple". So glad she reprised the role for the movie musical version. Her voice is magnificent. And I didn't know Taraji P. Henson could sing, she never sang on "Empire". Great choice for Suge Avery. Looking forward to the movie. 🙂🙂🙂

@mikko3 she is a Disney princess and has not only displayed it in the movie but has also shown her awesomeness singing Disney songs live. Find one vocal coach who says she's not a Disney princess. Then you might have a point. Even those who were skeptical gave her praise in her performance. The only ones who criticize her are those who felt she should've been yt. Even though their chosen weren't natural redheads nor good singers. Try not to be so obvious and painfully hateful.

As someone living in the birthplace of Fantasia, I teared up when I saw this preview before the Barbie movie. I am SO proud of her!

I was blessed to see the original cast on Broadway with my mom and I’m so grateful they are making it into theaters! The music is so soulful and they show more of the story because Oprah pulled from the book when production for the Broadway show was in the beginning stages

I saw a screening of the movie, it’s amazing. I loved it so much. The movie is so beautifully written and it made my cry multiple times. The crew is so talented and they are just amazing actors.
Oh my goodness the trailer itself has me emotional. The original Color Purple movie is one of my favorite all time movies. I remember the 1st time I watched it at the age of 13 yrs old in 1998 I was at awe. I was 3 yrs old when the original movie came out. I would make my PaPa sit and watch the original movie over and over again with me. I could tell he would get irritated with me. Lol! That is one of the great memories that I will always cherish that I had with my grandfather. So seeing that it comes out on Christmas my favorite and true holiday, I am going to be a emotional wreck sitting there in the movie theatre Christmas day God willing, just happy and crying tears of joy. If you get a chance to see this movie, it is dynamite. Taraji P, Danielle, Ciara, H.E.R, Fantasia, Holly, and all the cast were awesome, absolutely awesome. I just watched it and to know what all those wonderful actresses went through to make this movie, made my eyes about 5 times throughout the movie?

I remember sitting in the theater last year and this trailer came on before the movie. I started crying. I went on to see this movie 3 times in theaters.
OMG. I am sobbing from this trailer. Fantasia's voice. One of my favorite stories and films.
I really thought this was a remake to the classic film but it's a musical and that's totally fine with me but I feel like Fantasia is going to killed it as Cecily and Oscars here we come! Cause I know this whole entire cast will deliver a performance of a "Lifetime" 👏❤🔥

this won’t be a remake. this is based on the musical version that was on broadway. the musical is very different from the original movie. it’s a completely different interpretation. this movie will be its own thing.

I saw Fantasia play this role here in Chicago. She didn't act it. She LIVED it. I am too excited!!!!!!!!!!

I remember waiting in line 3 hours at The Galleria in Houston to see the original in 1985. It was worth the wait. Hope the musical is great as well.

Fantasia is such amazing singer. Like, really, she sings that fantastically. And already this movie is amazing. All of the warmth, and all the joy and all the triumph is all there in this film. I can't wait for this epic journey of the new take of this beloved classic.

But Spielberg, Oprah and Quincy producing it is another level.
Spielberg directed the original film and Oprah starred in it so it makes sense that they’d come back as producers

I remember my american teacher showing this to our class as part of the lesson and upcoming test. Passed the time bawling my eyes out and once this trailer came out I immediately recognized the original movie
This is not a REMAKE of the original 1985 film, it’s an adaptation of the stage musical. Thought everyone should know. I’m actually interested in seeing this, it’s looks so good!!

The 2 shots of shug (still and then dancing) followed by the cut to the quincy jones slide is so impactful 1:11 As well as the faster raised hands sequence bouncing from the waterfall to the church then taraji henson slide. 1:48 ❤
