  • The Alfa Romeo Giulia is one of the best cars the Italian brand has produced in decades. Gorgeous styling, sporty handling and great safety ratings make it a genuine contender against the typical German rivals, but how does it compare to one of the best? I pit the Giulia against the Audi A4 to find out.

I actually changed my A6 in for a Giulia, and it absolutely didn't disappoint! Sure, it's a bit less practical and some, not all, of the interior trim can't match Audi.. but if that's the reason you're buying a car then you're mad. Being a bit less practical will only be an issue a few times a year anyway.

So now I'm BACK looking at Giulias ;) ...and I was also concerned about the SERVICE, but in my case the local AR dealer shares it's roof with Maserati - no Chrysler of Fiat , but you feel a bit looked down upon which IDG a shit about. Audi - very good looking, excelent interior and practicality, very economical and easy to drive
Alfa - good and unique looking, very good interior, very good flappy pedal gearbox with RWD, lots of fun to drive
Conclusion: The Audi checks more boxes, so for a normal person it is the better car, BUT for a petrol head there is no doubt that the Alfa would be the only right choice.

    • @fernandofragoso4118
      @fernandofragoso4118 Před 7 lety +22

Totally agree. I would pick the Alfa, but its not for everybody. The steering is too sharp, the brakes are too precise, it has less body roll, less suspension travel, etc.. a more sporty feeling. The Audi is more relaxed. Its a tourer while the Giulia its a sports car.
While for some people the A4 its the best for being comfortable, peaceful and chilled to live with, for other people it would be boring and Giulia is the answer. But the difference its not reliability or material quality. Its just the character of the cars. Both are well built.

I love the fact the Giulia now comes in 'Veloce' trim, with a meaty 280hp on tap. It gives the car a much sportier feel. I test-drove one yesterday as well as the 2.2L diesel model, and the extra power really does change the whole feel and dynamic of the car.
I've had Audi A4s, A5s and A6s as hire cars to do long-distance driving (Lincoln to Plymouth and back again), and they are indeed very comfortable, but to be fair the Giulia is hardly a Fred Flintstone car; it's still comfortable enough to drive.

I test-drove US version of Giulia sport package (2.0 petrol), as well as Ausi A6 2.0 petrol 3 years ago. And I have been driving a BMW 328 2.0 petrol for 3 years before the lease ended.
Giulia looks absolutely stunning in-person. In the cabin it is nice, too. Sport trim with alcantara is not all that luxurious, the steering wheel looks a little funny, I am sure the luxury version with leather fixes all of this. The screen is smallish. The drive is interesting, not as silky-smooth as a Japanese V6, but quite engaging. You can go fast without realizing it. It does not spin up fast like BMW, but does not need it either. Acceleration is smooth and competent. Steering is good, with good precision although not as precise as direct steering in my old 525i BMW. Transmission is well refined, the whole powertrain is well integrated. Absorbs bumps well
The A6 felt very nice in the cabin, good materials, accelerates competently. Nothing special in the drive. Had a feeling the 2.0 petrol will not be strong enough for the highway at speed. Need S6 with supercharged V6 for that. Audi us great for initial quality of electronics. Engine needs fanatical maintenance
The 328i transmission is very jerky at low speed. If you release the accelerator suddenly, it gives you a whiplash. There is erratic upshifting when going downhill in traffic. Engine revs up well, is almost silent at slow speeds, good fuel economy. Steering is awful, easily the worst in this group. There is no feel for the car, not in control Seats are super-spartan, and suspension makes you feel every bump, plus rattle from the road. 2.0 petrol often lacks power when going uphill on the freeway. Cabin is nothing special. Exterior looks good, but generic BMW
Giulia does not have the problems of BMW. Surprisingly for the sport car heritage it shifts very smoothly, has power on lower end, as well as reserve for the high end, absorbs bumps well enough, no rattle, seats are much better, plenty of power, would not tell it is a 2.0 liter. Much better steering feel
As far as initial quality, being a new car, it will be worse than Audi or BMW. Need a competent service dept. Audi and BMW achieved good initial quality. Audi will likely not last much more than 3 years, 50k miles. BMW questionable. Giulia same thing. None of these are good to own, and equally practical to lease. Giulia is good to lease if you are willing to work out initial problems, and have a good mechanic handy

Its handling, its performance, its pleasure of driving and its technical refinement makes this car out of the A4 range.
A4 is an ordinary car if compared to Giulia.
Giulia is the new benchmark in driving pleasure, has a strong personality, can be as comfortable at the same way of Audi...

Between its sublime handling, wonderful looks and quick engine (2.0L 280-bhp) it crushes the comparable competitor models. I agree with another post. I hate those pop-up or add-on screens on German cars. It's like an afterthought with little or no imagination. You find these stick-on screens on the cheapest cars on the planet. Unlike the Alfa which has a true driver's cockpit with an integrated screen much like other exotics such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Lambos. And like any special or unique boutique car, Alfa doesn't bombard you with hypnotic ads and mind-bending marketing slogans. Alfas are purebred sports cars with an enviable racing history and all class. No wonder petrolheads love them.

If the Stelvio can be a success (it already is on looks in my opinion), the company can finally pull itself up by the boot straps and start making phenomenal cars again. I think the car to look out for will be the successor to the Giulia in a few years time. I think by that point, they might finally be on the same level as their competitors.

Audi design in A4 is a disaster,
the deep ribbing on the side of the car body is probably from the 80's, then you have round lines of the general shape from the previous A6 (3 generations back) and angular headlight and sharp front, nothing matches - the bad styling. Alfa design is proportional, a bit outdated, but still very good.

    -A manual gearbox

I consider the Alfa to be a car meant for attracting the younger crowd, the ones who would like a more sporty car. On the other side you have family people who want a reliable car that has a loot of room and is comfortable. If you ask me, it's all about preferance here...
