Alfa Giulia vs Audi A4 - can Italy beat Germany's finest? | Head2Head

- The Alfa Romeo Giulia is one of the best cars the Italian brand has produced in decades. Gorgeous styling, sporty handling and great safety ratings make it a genuine contender against the typical German rivals, but how does it compare to one of the best? I pit the Giulia against the Audi A4 to find out.

The Audi you buy with your brain, the Alfa you buy with the heart
So if I have both, I buy BMW?

Audis you buy with your lemming instinct, there's no brain involved.
John Wink don't forget, the mercedes is bought with your precious butt.

Ville Pusa If you have a brain, you'd be buying a Lexus.
Im the kind of guy that hates having the same car as everybody els, so i would get the Alfa :)

I actually changed my A6 in for a Giulia, and it absolutely didn't disappoint! Sure, it's a bit less practical and some, not all, of the interior trim can't match Audi.. but if that's the reason you're buying a car then you're mad. Being a bit less practical will only be an issue a few times a year anyway.
Head = buy the Audi
Heart = buy the Alfa.
Heart wins every time.

Did you buy or lease
Because if you bought it you will be disappointed when the Italian pos breaks down and your old A6 lasts 200,000 miles
Reliability is so boring these days ... That's what I need to keep telling myself, because I bought!
My 156 has almost 300k kms. A friend of mine has one with almost 600k kms. So its not only the TDI that lasts. The JTD it also lasts a lot.
NovaLogiX wtf is wrong with you man.you are absolutely Mad Men
Volkswagen and reliable? Good joke Bro'
I've owned a Giulia 2.2. aut. d for almost two years now - and I still look forward to drive every morning (I've got around 65 miles to work).
I heard from many people that it has many problems is that true bcs i want to buy one

I have had 3 BMWs and now I have a Giulia 2017 =- leaves BMW in the dirt - will never go back to any other car
after owning this car - I retract my previous comment - BMW 2nd to none for after sales service - Alfa is a Chrysler product and hence consumer is treated like a Chrysler owner and not a ALFA owner - crap service
Hmm, as a 10y owner of 330i I was considering to lease Giulia mid-2017 but felt like it needed to proof itself 1st, so I went for the (just as boring as the A4) CPO '15 328ix (more wife friendly) and regretted it so much that I actually just dumped it, while still holding on to my '06 330i that I love ...and leased a new X3 for the wife since all new BMW are only good in version M or X ...and M is too$ and I already have '11 X5 and a new X3.
So now I'm BACK looking at Giulias ;) ...and I was also concerned about the SERVICE, but in my case the local AR dealer shares it's roof with Maserati - no Chrysler of Fiat , but you feel a bit looked down upon which IDG a shit about. Anyway how has your 1st year been like? Thank you in advance - cheers!
@@vcader Dont own an Alfa, but an Abarth 124 Spider, and the FCA dealerships in Germany are just useless. You dont get anyone on the phone, if you want to buy a car you dont find anyone to sell it to you and the workshop service is the worst. If you get your car back from service it is scratched and has new issues. The reliability and the quality of the cars are very good. But the dealerships... wow. Whole other story with BMW dealerships.
@@Gentleman...Driver I went to one Alfa dealer in the Netherlands and it felt like I was giving the salesperson a tour of the car instead of the other way around. Didn't go back after a test drive. Contacted another dealership and ended up talking to the salesperson for 2 hours, he showed me every Alfa in every spec they had and he will be the first person I call when I'm ordering it this summer. Rs4?
Audi - very good looking, excelent interior and practicality, very economical and easy to drive
Alfa - good and unique looking, very good interior, very good flappy pedal gearbox with RWD, lots of fun to drive
Conclusion: The Audi checks more boxes, so for a normal person it is the better car, BUT for a petrol head there is no doubt that the Alfa would be the only right choice.
Totally agree. I would pick the Alfa, but its not for everybody. The steering is too sharp, the brakes are too precise, it has less body roll, less suspension travel, etc.. a more sporty feeling. The Audi is more relaxed. Its a tourer while the Giulia its a sports car.
While for some people the A4 its the best for being comfortable, peaceful and chilled to live with, for other people it would be boring and Giulia is the answer. But the difference its not reliability or material quality. Its just the character of the cars. Both are well built.
...actually you provided 5 things for the audi and 6 for the alfa so..
Alfa is almost a copy of BMW 3 series.it doesn't look unique at all...
The Audi is obsolete my good man....Now they put a video game in front of the driver to attract millennials....RIDICULOUS....The Giulia is a 4 door Ferrari....the Audi is a JETTA....Game over....NEXT ..

Dino Pappous Alfa looks sportier, Audi is a king in material quality so thats why it's gonna be premium what Alfa just can dream.

Well done👍attention to detail makes all the difference 👏🎩🍷
Still going to get the Giulia, love that look!
I love the fact the Giulia now comes in 'Veloce' trim, with a meaty 280hp on tap. It gives the car a much sportier feel. I test-drove one yesterday as well as the 2.2L diesel model, and the extra power really does change the whole feel and dynamic of the car.
I've had Audi A4s, A5s and A6s as hire cars to do long-distance driving (Lincoln to Plymouth and back again), and they are indeed very comfortable, but to be fair the Giulia is hardly a Fred Flintstone car; it's still comfortable enough to drive.
Sat on a couple of quotes for a Giulia Veloce at the moment. My only real decision is whether I want it in Vulcano Black or Misano Blue.
Of course alfa romeo giulia.

If you chose Alfa - great life awaits you. Maybe you are a bit mad, but you drive ALFA. Everyone should drive an Alfa once in lifetime. (Jeremy Clarkson...) :-)

If you want a normal life without disturbance, you buy a Toyota Camry. Good luck not having headaches with the Audi once warranty is over!
Most of the people are not petrolheads, so....
For example VW also sells more than Lamborghini but that doesnt mean VW is better. Which it is, as a practical car, but not hardcore one.
Alfa and Audi are in the same price class, VW and Lamborghini aren't
I have driven one (petrol 4 cyl), and it feels very much like a normal car, no need to be mad, and it does not FORCE you to drive fast, like BMW does, nor is it jerky like 3 series i4. You will simply not notice you are going over the speed limit
The A4 looks like an old Camry next to the Alfa.

Not really. As fidgety as Audi's reliability can be, Alfa's is far worse. We also don't know how well the Alfa would hold it's price. Another thing is that the "honeymoon" period of the Giulia is coming to an end. Where as half a year ago everyone was saying how it's the best thing ever, now people are starting to say "Well, there's this and that that isn't great".
The Audi is a proven daily. The Alfa, as good looking and as sporty as it is, is still a wild card since Alfa have been out of the class for so long.
Not really.I would buy the qv any day,if i could afford it,but here i would rather have the audi.

this is the only reasonable comment I've found in the ocean of audi fanboys
Giulietta in Uk has proven to be a fairly reliable car (88% of cars pass their MoT), why should Giulia be less?
Alfa (FIAT) are trying to get back into the American market after being kicked out for 20 years for being unreliable shit boxes. When Autoline Network tried to test a press car over a one week period it broke down 3 times and they couldn't actually complete the test. And I think it's bling bling ugly as well.

Meanwhile Fiat is 7th from top: www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/picturegalleries/9816454/Engine-reliability-the-top-10-brands.html?frame=2457919

I wish you would mention the cost of servicing which can sometimes be ridiculously expensive. A three year comparison would be ideal including service plans and non service plans. I recently payed £500 for a second service on a BMW (I didn't have the service plan). They classed it as a major service although they only changed the oil and a few filters.

is there a manual gearbox option for the Giulia? and is it as good/fun driving as th auto?
I test-drove US version of Giulia sport package (2.0 petrol), as well as Ausi A6 2.0 petrol 3 years ago. And I have been driving a BMW 328 2.0 petrol for 3 years before the lease ended.
Giulia looks absolutely stunning in-person. In the cabin it is nice, too. Sport trim with alcantara is not all that luxurious, the steering wheel looks a little funny, I am sure the luxury version with leather fixes all of this. The screen is smallish. The drive is interesting, not as silky-smooth as a Japanese V6, but quite engaging. You can go fast without realizing it. It does not spin up fast like BMW, but does not need it either. Acceleration is smooth and competent. Steering is good, with good precision although not as precise as direct steering in my old 525i BMW. Transmission is well refined, the whole powertrain is well integrated. Absorbs bumps well
The A6 felt very nice in the cabin, good materials, accelerates competently. Nothing special in the drive. Had a feeling the 2.0 petrol will not be strong enough for the highway at speed. Need S6 with supercharged V6 for that. Audi us great for initial quality of electronics. Engine needs fanatical maintenance
The 328i transmission is very jerky at low speed. If you release the accelerator suddenly, it gives you a whiplash. There is erratic upshifting when going downhill in traffic. Engine revs up well, is almost silent at slow speeds, good fuel economy. Steering is awful, easily the worst in this group. There is no feel for the car, not in control Seats are super-spartan, and suspension makes you feel every bump, plus rattle from the road. 2.0 petrol often lacks power when going uphill on the freeway. Cabin is nothing special. Exterior looks good, but generic BMW
Giulia does not have the problems of BMW. Surprisingly for the sport car heritage it shifts very smoothly, has power on lower end, as well as reserve for the high end, absorbs bumps well enough, no rattle, seats are much better, plenty of power, would not tell it is a 2.0 liter. Much better steering feel
As far as initial quality, being a new car, it will be worse than Audi or BMW. Need a competent service dept. Audi and BMW achieved good initial quality. Audi will likely not last much more than 3 years, 50k miles. BMW questionable. Giulia same thing. None of these are good to own, and equally practical to lease. Giulia is good to lease if you are willing to work out initial problems, and have a good mechanic handy
Come on, confess, you would buy the Giulia for yourself :)

Hey Matt, when are you going to do a review on the New Insignia Grand sport??
The Alfa, face it, is new. The first real contender they've put up, and she's pretty, and a good performer. Not as polished as the competition, but fresh. And you don't see one on every corner. That's a big appeal to a lot of people.
Driving is the part of the day where my inner child awakes. With the A4 that never happens
The reviewer is dead on about not every car needing to be exciting. Even more true when one can afford a week end car for fun driving. Good review.
Well, all I can say is that I'm in love with the Guilia. Had a chance to buy a brand new one for 36.000€. The problem was that it had next to no extras and it had the smallest gasoline engine, 2.000cc and 200CV. Instead of getting the Guilia, I ended up getting myself a sweet Audi S6 C7 for 40.000€. This particular unit has 119.000km on the clock and its full equipped without the B&O speakers and the Head-up display, everything else, I've got it! Coming from a BMW fan!
People need to realise that some of us actually love Audi for its simplicity.
Saddo 😄
Giulia looks awesome! Beautiful, sporty, classy, with a strong personality. Unique in its class. When you look at this car you think "Wow! This car has a soul!".
Its handling, its performance, its pleasure of driving and its technical refinement makes this car out of the A4 range.
A4 is an ordinary car if compared to Giulia.
Giulia is the new benchmark in driving pleasure, has a strong personality, can be as comfortable at the same way of Audi...
Alfa Romeo is a car for men with blood in their veins, while Audi is the car for the people liking understatement and connectivity.
Check your medicin. Talking awkward bullshit like a teen groupie on Justin Bieber concert. Absolutly not objective.
I got myself the Giulia Ti Sport here in the States (aka Veloce model) and it is an absolute dream. The Giulia is the most well-balanced sports sedan there is. Between its sublime handling, wonderful looks and quick engine (2.0L 280-bhp) it crushes the comparable competitor models. I've taken her on long distance trips and she handles perfectly smoothly, almost sedate. But when you give it some throttle there is that instant Italian satisfaction and soul.
Is to comfortable? What would you rate the comfort 1-10? Is it reliable?
I agree with another post. I hate those pop-up or add-on screens on German cars. It's like an afterthought with little or no imagination. You find these stick-on screens on the cheapest cars on the planet. Unlike the Alfa which has a true driver's cockpit with an integrated screen much like other exotics such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Lambos. And like any special or unique boutique car, Alfa doesn't bombard you with hypnotic ads and mind-bending marketing slogans. Alfas are purebred sports cars with an enviable racing history and all class. No wonder petrolheads love them.
The Alfa is a lot more exciting, but the Audi is so much easier to live with and I don't think you could go wrong with either. Buy either and you'd wonder how nice it would have been to get the other car.
Finally some sensible comment. Other are just throwing shit at each other without realising that different people have different tastes and needs.

I just got a Giulia in the USA and all I can say is wow, what a car. Most comfortable ride I've ever experienced. Very fast! Plus, when you look at the audi compared to the alfa from the outside, there's really no competition.
Not a single shot of the A4 from the back where I can see the exhausts. Good job Carwow....
Alfa all day every day
The Alfa is a car with soul, a car with character like basically all Alfas.
Like Jeremy Clarkson said only true pertolheads will ever understand the magic these cars have to offer. This Audi on the other hand is just a dull, boring sedan.
Picked the Audi S3 over the Giulia. No regrets. Softer suspension. Still exciting. Incredibly comfortable and high quality interiors for long drives and still enough back seat space...for comparable price. IDC if my car isn't drop dead sexy outside like the Giulia. I'm going to be spending most of my time inside the car driving it, not outside looking at it.
I can't believe it. The guy is happy that Alfa comes with automatic as standard...
Most reviewer said that they preferred the automatic one because the manual isn't that good, but the automatic one is perfect.
All i can say Duncan is go and drive an alfa with that gearbox, it's absolutely incredible, instant gearchanges make the driving experience very fun and nothing beats playing with those paddles like a ferrari
Cause it's top notch gearbox, same as the one used in BMW 5 series
Although the Giulia hasn't quite beat it's German rivals just yet, it's a good indication of what Alfa CAN become. If the Stelvio can be a success (it already is on looks in my opinion), the company can finally pull itself up by the boot straps and start making phenomenal cars again. I think the car to look out for will be the successor to the Giulia in a few years time. I think by that point, they might finally be on the same level as their competitors.
Performances , chassis tenue de route , design , interieur c 'est déjà loin devant !

Audi design in A4 is a disaster,
the deep ribbing on the side of the car body is probably from the 80's, then you have round lines of the general shape from the previous A6 (3 generations back) and angular headlight and sharp front, nothing matches - the bad styling. Alfa design is proportional, a bit outdated, but still very good.
you can't go wrong with these cars
*You can't go wrong with the A4.
kiva mies - The Audi here is wrong-wheel-drive to begin with, merely a Passat in a suit. Golf R is a much better machine for the same money.

A friend of mine once said: Imagine choosing between a good pasta dish or stuff yourself full with boiled potatoes. Choice is yours...
I'd buy the A4
No joke, attack me.
You have no soul 😂
Why are we comparing a Skoda to the Alfa ?
I might be very criticized for this..
I don't like how new car makers, especially Mercedes, just attach the screen on dashboard. It looks ugly to me, like they are to lazy to finish design of interior.
But then I saw what Alfa did with screen and I love it, even though it might be a bit more blurry or slower than it's competition. Currently I drive Alfa 156 SW and I'm super pleased with it and I never had any problems. I hope one day I might be able to buy Giulia.
If it's top of the range performance package
Alpha would be my choice every single time..
It's the best looking in its class by far..
The Alfa is solid all-фентб; have to say that the Audi is likewise competent, yet without the personality and soul level found in the Italian sedan.
Alfa wins in my book; boss car that John Gotti would have driven - may he rest in peace. Handled like Donald Trump ... gangster.
Alfa Romeo the Best.
does anyone know the reason behind manufacturers making rear windows not go all the way down?
Maybe for children safety.
Have a 2005 Audi TT manual and a 2017 Giulia 280hp (US). So I like both brands. Giulia compared with A4 has a less interesting interior though excels with its carbon fiber drive shaft, rear wheel bias, delightful turbo sounds and incredibly direct steering. At 80 mph, no traffic in front of you and miles to go, the Giulia is a real treat. At 47k miles and still going strong.
Funny enough im picking between a mk3 audi TT S (2017) and Alfa Romeo Gulia Ti sport (2018) similar power / weight. Only thing is the Gulia is slightly more affordable where im at.
I already know that audi would win even before watching
win what? catagory for the dullest and boring....
Finally the A4 is getting the credit it deserves, only if you used a sharper looking diesel model.
Head vs Heart = Audi vs Alfa
For eg:-
A4 vs Giulia
TT vs 4c
Successful businessman vs Successful Rockstar
Alfa Romeo 159 2.4 JTDm Sportwagon owner here.
Alfa Romeo is Love❤️
Having both I like my guilia better... but in city & traffic I like my A4
Audi! Whaaaahahahaha..... it could kill you; you’ll get bored to death!
A few years ago,VAG had the 20 engine(TSI or/and FSI) that consumed a lot of motoroil. It was a production/factory fail. Repair was more than €6000,- So "reliable" ? Yes in the past. I trust more the Alfa and like the looks much more.
Well i do have a 156 and im happy with it can only imagine then what the gulia would do for me
Alfa , no dout
For those who are rational and need a car to get around with the family, a VW Passat is even better choice than the Audi.
For those who like cars, like to drive and crave "good memories" to tell at the end of life, well, choice Alfa Romeo, always!
The Alfa would've been a clear win if it had:
-A manual gearbox
-An AWD option
-A more practical boot (I've used my Audi since '05 because of the roominess, low maintenance and the comfortable ride)
I consider the Alfa to be a car meant for attracting the younger crowd, the ones who would like a more sporty car. On the other side you have family people who want a reliable car that has a loot of room and is comfortable. If you ask me, it's all about preferance here...
I had the choice between the A5 and Giulia. So fucking happy I chose the Giulia, it turns heads everywhere it goes, and driving it is a dream. There's so much soul in this car that it makes my daily commutes to work a blast.
