    My dad died listening to this song. It was his birthday and cancer had snuck up on him. He knew he was going and had slipped into a coma. I got him this CD that day. I'd listened to this album growing up and I knew he could hear us. I put the CD on and he looked up at smiled at me and started to cross himself-- I helped him finish the crossing. He died listening to this song. Rock on in peace Dad! Wherever he is, he's got music!

    Watched a lot of these , figured I’d add my two cents.. read a lot of comments also.....born in 1964 grew up listening to the Statlers loved them from the time I was 6 or 7. While Jimmy is no Lew, Lew was also definitely no Jimmy they are alike but have there own deferences..(in my opinion). And let’s remember the Statlers probably never would have found Jimmy if not for Lew, so Lew know what was there before anyone and suggested Jimmy to the Statler Brothers! Also see a lot of comparisons to the Oak Ridge Boys. excellent group love them too!!! But again in my opinion, there’s simply no comparison in my mind, THE STATLER BROTHERS were definitely better, quite possibly The BEST - ALL TIME. If your a Statler fan check out “THE FOURTH MAN” it’s an oldie you may not have seen

    • @kevinswinyer3176
      @kevinswinyer3176 Před rokem +1

      @Justjab, Lew actually personally picked Jimmy over all the other Tenors that auditioned to take his place on a temporary 6 month Stint. At the end of the 6 months, Lew tried to return to full time touring, and recording with the Statlers, but his health would not allow him to, so he reached out to both Harold, and Don, and advised them that he would not be able to return, and that they should hire Jimmy as his permanent replacement, and they took Lew's advice, and with Jimmy now in as Lew's permanent replacement, he brought with him some new songs that he had penned, and at least 2 of Jimmy's songs, if not more, became instant hits for the group. They had Lew for 18 years, and Jimmy stayed with them for 21 years right up until their very last Show on October 26th, 2002, which was held at the Salem Civic Center, in Salem, Virginia, just 90 miles from their Hometown in Staunton, Virginia. They picked Salem for their last Show because with it being just 90 miles from home, they were all able to get home that night after the Show.

    My wife and I want to a Statler/Mandrel concert in Shreveport, La. when I was about 27. She wanted an autograph after it was over and gave me a piece of notepaper. Sigh, I joined the crush of teenagers rushing the stage (they all had purchased photos to be signed). I was being crushed and had made it to about row three. Phil looked up, saw this older guy with just a piece of paper, reached out as far as he could over the others, took it to the others and Barbara and got it signed and brought it back.
    Thanks Phil. You have been my favorite since that day.

      I was at a concert shortly before I got married. At the end of the concert I gave Harold a note requesting sheet music to one of their songs for my wedding. A week later I not only got the had written sheet music from the composer Harlen Howard, but a hand written note signed by Harold. Yes it was his signature, I have it from previous concerts. These guys are the best and I have been a faithful fan since early 70's. Wow, I'm old, but devoted.

    I loved these guys when I was a kid, and still do. My dad "introduced" me to them when I was about 5 or 6 years old. This was/is my favorite song.
    Something strange happened to me a few minutes ago. I was thinking about this song and the Family Feud hosts after Richard Dawson left. Even though this song is about the Statler Brothers and their "contribution to the cause", it somehow fits. They were different but were glad to have had a chance to "bring something to the table". Even though they were no Richard Dawson, they had something that made the fans tune in and watch.
    The Statler Brothers (with Jimmy Fortune) were even on The Family Feud at one time, but with Ray Combs. They had Brenda Lee playing with them. I think they were playing against The Mandrell Family, but I'm not sure.

I had the great experience to see them live before they retired. They appeared at our county fair & they were sensational! After that, Jimmy Fortune appeared at the fair. He was sensational. I actually got to meet him & his wife & I have an autographed picture. I bought his album (I don't remember now what the title was) & he signed that too. I also have a DVD. I had a great time. Kathleen Cook Actually, Jimmy did not write Thank You World at all. Don, Harold, and Lew wrote it together, long before Jimmy even came into the Picture, and was part of the Statler Brothers Group. Jimmy did however, re write the very last verse of the Song, after Lew's Passing. Listen to Lew's last Verse from many years ago, and then listen to Jimmy's version of that last verse from their farewell Concert, and you notice, that the lyrics are slightly different between the 2 versions.

    I'm very sorry to see people arguing about Lew versus Jimmy. They are two very distinct kinds of voices, and some people like one and some like the other. The thing we have to remember is that Lew started them out with Flowers, but Jimmy extended their career even longer than Lew was there with more songs and more top hits. And he today in his solo career never fails to give Lew credit for recommending him. Keep in mind that Jimmy was with them for over 20 years of award-winning music. If they had not found him, we probably would have lost the Brothers. As Jimmy often notes, "It was a God thing" for him AND for them.

    The Statlers were a pleasant anomaly...they patterned themselves after a typical southern gospel quartet, yet they did not sing the normal parts of a typical southern gospel quartet. Harold was a baritone covering a higher-than-normal bass range; both Phil and Lew sang tenor, and with Don singing lead, there was no true baritone in the group.
    If it hadn't been for the characteristics of their voices and their incredibly smooth blend, it probably wouldn't have worked. But for them, it did.

    The Oak Ridge Boys were (are) a very good group. BUT in no way will they every be remembered as good as the Statler Brothers. the Statlers paved the way for groups like them and Alabama to have great careers. Have the Oaks retired from touring yet?

      They just announced that they are retiring in 2024. They are on their final tour now.

    I agree the Statlers helped "pave the way" for groups like them but whether or not the oaks will be remebered as good as the statlers is up to the individual thinking about their careers! Don't get me wrong, I love the statlers music but to say the oaks are conventional is just being under educated about the oaks music. I have a LARGE music collection by both groups. But if you want to get into multiple sounds, styles, etc of both groups, the oaks, no doubt, have more versatility!

    There is nothing "conventional" about the Oaks. They may be the most diverse singing group ever!

      @TimothyCow, Harold passed away in April of 2020, but Don, Phil, and Jimmy are still alive. Jimmy has a Solo Career now in Nashville, while Don is an accomplished Author of several books, and Phil still sings with their Church Choir.
