Autistic Headcanons - Hunter/The Golden Guard (The Owl House)

  • This had a lot of research, watching the show, and my own thoughts as someone in the autistic community involved in the making and my phone kept running out of storage so that’s why it took so long to release this. And there’s a lot of spelling errors so ignore them. Anyway I think I’m the first person to make a headcanon video about Hunter from TOH so I hope you enjoy!

    Ik I should have posted this comment weeks ago but for those of you who think Hunter's autistic traits come from his PTSD and his upbringing, there's some things part of his personality that trauma can't explain but autism can such as his hyperfiaxtion and infodumping. I would also like to mention that his traits of PTSD and Autism could overlap, and Dana Terrace did say once that neurodiversity was written into the show and who the characters are intentionally, which means that its a good possibility that Hunter Is autistic and PTSD coded!

    Flapjack to me comes across almost as a service or emotional support animal! He helps Hunter navigate the world and clearly tries to comfort him when he’s upset, which isn’t something other palismen have been shown to do. Also, as a fellow autistic person, I’ve always had a special connection with animals and find them much easier to deal with than people because their behavior is consistent and easy to read. (Also they have nice textures.) I think that’s pretty common for autistic people, and Hunter seems to fall into that category as well! Great video, I was hoping to find a compilation of all his autistic traits somewhere :-)

    Bro i just noticed, maybe the fact he uses gloves all the time is a hint too, y'know, like Sheldon did when he was young while saying grace at the dinner table with his family bc the doesn't like direct contact (Big Bang Theory/Young Sheldon)
    And with the social cues, some of the va or producers said on a ig live they deleted a scene on Clouds on the Horizon where Hunter didn't understand to ''give them privacy/room to talk" to Luz and Amity while rescuing her while the others where like "hey give them room to talk" and he was like "wym? Why?" and the others were like "you'll understand when you're older" and he was like "but i am older than you, wym older?" and Flapjack starts talking w him about it so he remains still waiting for Luz/Amity

      Unfortunately Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory is a bad example to use for this because even though he seems to be written very clearly autistic the writers and creators have stated before that he is not and they can't help how people read him but he wasn't meant to be written that way. Just thought I'd share, as an autistic person I think you might find Entrapta from She-Ra to be a better example as she also wears the big gloves.

    • @kalenkotalik
      @kalenkotalik  Před 2 lety +10

      Sorry for the late reply but the fact that Hunter was 1. pushing boundaries 2. misunderstanding their intentions by needing to be kept back and pretty much restrained because of his curiosity and instincts 3. having a fit because he can't go up with Luz and being confused 4. needing flapjack to come in to talk to him about what was going on and calm him down and help him understand, all this in just one scene just SCREAMS autism. So, Hunter is probably on the spectrum.

    • @kalenkotalik
      @kalenkotalik  Před rokem +7

      and btw in season 3 Thanks To Them, he doesn't have gloves on at all (not counting the scene when he got possessed btw cuz his body was being mutated) and he didn't have any scars so it was probably sensory issues!

    As an autistic person I’m not sure I agree with this quite yet, though it would certainly explain why I like him so much. I would like to note that impulsivity is an Adhd thing and not an Autism thing. Like, we might be unpredictable to people, but that’s because those people are under informed and don’t know us that well. My family can tell when I’m about to have a meltdown, and they understand my billion quirks and what they mean to me. And even with Adhd, I’m not very impulsive, because new things are scary. Autism is a spectrum disorder tho, so some people are more impulsive than others. It’s just not really an Autism thing

    While I do like this head-cannon I think that these behaviors can be explained through Hunter’s relationships with Belos. He was socially isolated in the castle, having never spoken to teens his own age. This, to me, explains why he is socially inept. Also, Belos has been shown to be physically abusive to Hunter. This is probably the main reason why he does not like physical contact. I do agree with the consensus that Flapjack is his emotional support animal, but I think it’s to deal with his general anxiety.

    “Fun” fact: people who’ve experienced trauma can display what people read as signs of autism when in reality they’re trauma responses, (such as misunderstanding social cues, retreating into themself or lashing out when overwhelmed, etc.) so anyone who’s considering an autism diagnosis who’s experienced trauma is required to undergo a certain amount of therapy before they can diagnose *anything.*
    [ Also, I myself am autistic, and as much as I love good autistic representation, I looked into this sort of thing when people were saying that Mafuyu Satō (from Given) was autistic. ]

      It's true, but I have to say just in case someone read it and misintreprest it : this fact is often used to invalidate someone's autism ("you're not autistic, it's just trauma"), when most of autistic people have actually experienced traumas, so this disclaimer is needed : someone having trauma responses doesn't mean they're not autistic (from an autistic person with traumas)

Although, if he had time to process said trauma, and went through X amount of therapy, and still acted similarly, *then* I’d say “yeah, he’s probably autistic”.

    Ok I’m gonna say it because I’ve seen a lot of comments about this on any media that suggests hunter is autistic
    YES TRAUMA CAN CAUSE MANY OF THESE BEHAVIOURS
    No, that doesn’t mean he’s not also autistic.
    I myself am autistic but I also have trauma somewhat similar to hunter and let me just say. If someone is so “autistic” due to trauma, then just accept that. It doesn’t actually matter what specific problems are causing the behaviour as long as the person or people around them understand it.
    But more importantly, people often have multiple struggles.
    I’m autistic and have trauma. I’m also a queer, trans person. I’m adopted but have family issues unrelated to that fact, and much more. Life is complicated, and hunter can be autistic and have cptsd.
    If you personally feel it can all be explained away with just one of those? Great, go ahead, but stop acting like him having trauma makes him immune (for lack of a better word) from also being autistic

    Since when is impulsively coming up with stuff an autistic trait?isn't it usually the opposite, needing an exact plan to function properly?

    • @mint7442
      @mint7442 Před 3 měsíci

      Autism is a spectrum disorder. Some autistic folk are paralysed by the idea of not having things planned out, some aren’t. It just depends if that stuff causes you enough stress to freeze or maybe only enough to freak out and have to act impulsively
      I probably didn’t explain it well sorry

  • @alexjewett7455
    @alexjewett7455 Před rokem

    Honestly, I'm not really convinced. Your evidence is a little shaky and some of it could be explained by him growing up sheltered in a controlling and cutthroat environment with an abusive parental figure. Also, the reason he was so upset about the meeting being rescheduled is because it was supposed to be his first time in charge. Just an important bit of context you seem to have ignored.

      I’m currently working on an analysis about it and how him having ptsd doesn’t make him any less likely to be autistic, and you do realize Dana writes neurodivergence in the owl house intentionally
