  • The third version of one of the world’s most popular race shoes, the Alphafly 3, sees several updates. That includes a wider carbon plate to increase stability, a new midsole design that features fully connected ZoomX foam for a smoother ride, and a revamped AtomKnit upper for better lockdown as well as breathability.
Adidas’s long-distance race shoe, the Adios Pro 3, has Energyrods 2.0 running the full length of the shoe. These work alongside two layers of Lightsrike Pro midsole foam to deliver a stiff ride that has a high level of energy return.
Tom and Nick compare the two super shoes to see which they'd pick for race day.

The AP3 is superb; it has a wide base, so it's good for heel or forefoot strikers, and the toe-off is amazing. Plus it's comfortable to run in at any pace.

You can’t go wrong with either. I have both. The AlphaFly 3 is -for me-a superior performance shoe in every way. But, the Adios Pro 3 is far more durable and way more accessible (in terms of price, availability, and general compatibility). Both are super cars, but one is meant for Formula 1 race courses while the other is great for countless hours on the Autobahn.

For recreational runners a shoe that lasts longer and a shoe that you can train with and get familiar with it with no fear of "ruining the shoe' is more valuable than a shoe that costs more and is far less durable.

exactly, and that was one of my main reasons why I went for the AP3, and the price of course. I wonder what they are going to do with the next version on this remarkable shoe..

I'd like to hear opinion of 50 y.o. +, that's who can tell me more about comfort and foot condition after say 5-10 miles.. 20-30 y.o can run barefoot and no problem, so they can tell very little about effect on the foot.. IMHO.. Dude runs sub 4 per km.. Cannot tell me anything as these has no body weight and no age to feel any difference.. IMHO.

AF V3 is the best shoe I have ever worn, it's also the most comfortable....which is CRAZY. The weight reduction, and new midsole setup makes it soooooo smooth. Running at marathon, half marathon and even 10k pace feels effortless. I liked the AF V1, but the drop made my calves suffer in the last 5km of the marathon, and I didn't feel fast enough at 3:30hr. The AF V2 was a great shoe, but it felt heavy and bulky at the end of the marathon. I keep running workouts in the V1, V2 and V3, and the V3 just gives consistently lower HR and RPE over similar/same workouts. I keep doubting the data....but I'm about ready to just accept the AF V3 is the perfect shoe for me.

Not to mention the great heel lock I get on the AF line, which Adidas and Saucony still can't seem to get right (for me). I can only hope you've found the perfect shoe for you!

Adios Pro 3 is a great shoe, you can pick up 2 x pairs for the cost of a newer super shoe, and useful for tempo and long runs. I keep going back to mine, for lower distances I can match my pb race times and nothing in it with EP3 and RX2.

I love the AF3, the feel, the fit and the speed, my favourite super shoe yet and it has excellent grip in the wet in relation to other supershoes. Bought a pair of Adios Pro 3's (thankfully on a big discount) and I do not like them, really hard to get a heel lock and the upper on the toe box rubs my toes. I imagine I'll be selling them soon as they just don't feel good on foot for me, too firm and the fit is never right.

I have both shoes and the AF 3 is just a better, more comfortable shoe. AF3 will be as durable as any other super shoe I have (almost all of them). Hoping to give sub 3 a shot in the AF3 in the fall at Chicago.

I haven't tried the af3 yet, but their verdict captures my feelings on the af1 vs ap3, which are both, by far, the two greatest shoes I've tried. Nothing is close for me.
Purely in regards to performance, the af1 is the better shoe. However, when factoring in versatility (i use my ap3 as a daily trainer and sometimes easy day shoe), durability (my alphaflys have died around 300mi whereas i have an ap3 with over 500 miles thats still going strong), price and ultimately value, the ap3 is the better all around shoe.

Not sure how you guys get sales that have these as low as £60. Definitely haven't seen anything close to that in Canada. I like my Boston 12, I don't like an 8mm drop and I'm not a fast runner so if I end up with a race shoe for my first marathon in a few months it will be the AP3.

I would never pick up the pro 3 for any kind of race
But there again I like soft bouncy shoes
The pro 3 is okay but it doesn’t feel like a supershoe (make you feel faster , propulsive ) in my opinion
It just feels like a soild shoe and some people probably prefer that
You will be disappointed if you want something like the alphafly
Vapourfly 2 or 3 are great options that don’t cost £285

As a heavier runner (85kg) don't think I'd risk the lower front stack caused by the 8mm drop on the alphafly 3. Even with zoom in the forefoot, the stack is the same as the Vaporfly next% and that was only good for me to 10k. Vaporfly 1 has an additional 3mm on the forefoot. Plus they look like kitten heels and gaf 😂👍

They are bearable for the benefit up to half marathon distance. But not for marathons.

No one can feel the difference of 20g between shoes. I don't care what they think they feel.
I run in shoes from 170g to over 300g and there's nothing noticeable that you could quantify to say otherwise. By the time you've added some dirt and sweat/water they go up in weight anyway.
Tom would pick a plimsoll as the best shoe if it had a nike badge on it. 😂

Adios pro 3 are so overrated. Force you to run different to your natural biomechanics as most other super shoes. Not tried alpha 3’s yet but will for the mass colourway release. Saucony endorphin pro 3’s let you run more natural(not the fastest feeling but consistent) just got the endo pro 4’s.

Makes you run on the outside of your foot...which is perfect for me, any shoe that forces you to run flat is a disaster for my stride and causes over pronation.

@tono1665 Please share your impression of the Endo Pro 4 compared to the 3’s. I ran a big PR in the Endo 3’s last Apr. but was offered a pair of AF3 to consider for this year (from my running store). I’m somewhat averse to risking since they’re the only Nike shoe I’ve liked at all and very different from the Endo Pro 3. V4 is getting very mixed comparisons and it seems to depend on what kind of foot strike or biomechanics once has, which is preferred. I’ve only put one 14 mi LR on the AF3’s and was impressed but not sure they’re better for me (they’re returnable at least).
